About this house rental
Set in an olive grove at the foot of Mount Pelion over-looking the sea, Oliver’s Cottage offers a taste of Greece as it used to be. On the ground floor a large living room with sitting area, with two traditional Pelion size 'box' sofas which can be used as twin single beds or a double bed
Dining area, with wood-burning stove, fitted kitchen and shower room.
On the first floor, large bedroom with 2 single beds and one double bed. En suite shower room. Double doors opening onto huge balcony with spectacular sea views. 2 Further folding beds or a child's cot can be added on request.
Outside – patios to front in full sun with sea views and rear in the shade of the olive trees. Barbecue.
Ano Gatzea is a picturesque Greek village a stone’s throw from the sea. Cobbled paths lead down through the olive groves to the beaches or up the mountain where you can walk all day past tumbling waterfalls, through forests and historic villages, meeting only the occasional farmer on a mule.
Ano Gatzea is the only “station stop” on the heritage Pelion mountain railway (there are lots of other stops for goats and tortoises on the line!) Built in 1895 using muscle power and the odd stick of dynamite, this extraordinary railway line winds its way up the mountain from the sea to the mountain village of Milies. Trains run once a day in summer and at weekends in spring and autumn.
The nearest beach is Gripsana, 30 minutes’ walk through the olive groves. Nearby (3 km) is the low key resort of Kala Nera (which means “fine waters”) and The Rivera Club which offers drinks on loungers by the sea and a selection of watery sports to try. The Pagasitic Gulf, almost entirely surrounded by land is almost swimming pool still in summer and remains warm enough for swimming throughout the winter. With the ski resort of Chania only 40 minutes’ drive away. locals boast that you can “ski in the morning, swim in the afternoon”.
Mainland Greece, less developed and less visited than the islands, is a walker’s paradise. Cobbled paths link the villages and a huge network of forest trails make for superb mountain biking, taking you high onto the mountain, or even coast to coast across the peninsula from the Pagasitic Gulf to the Aegean Sea.
Thick forests of beech and chestnut are home to wild boar, martens, nightingales and jet black squirrels. The high mountain remains snow-capped until early summer, while below in the valleys fast-flowing streams and waterfalls run though olive groves full of flowers.
We provide a series of GPS-compatible self-guided walks, from gentle strolls taking under half an hour, to full-day hikes, all of which can be done from the house. These are graded from “A Piece of Cake” to “Tough”, enabling you to choose something that fits your mood and energy levels. Choose which walk you fancy doing from the photographic guide and then follow the fully described walk plan, with inset map, GPS references and photos of difficult bits.
The city of Volos, reputed to be the most beautiful in Greece, is 17 km away. A lively, airy city, Volos has a cinema, superbowl and theater as well as lots of sea front restaurants and tspouradika (ouzo restaurants) for which the area is famous (just don’t think about driving afterwards!). For more peaceful dining, try for a real taste of Greece Georgos’ café where the home-made wine will give you something to talk about.

The cottage itself was amazing with stunning views and a traditional vibe. Cottage Manager Evie is an amazing lady. She guided me well with all the details of getting to the cottage. She even helped us with our luggage, suggested all the places to go to nearby and also guided us on our onward journey. She is extremely helpful and very friendly!
However, you need to be prepared for a tricky drive up the mountains and through a railway track. My first day, I was really scared about the drive but it was all a very good experience and something we’ll never forget! The facilities in the cottage were decent. The only problem we had was that the water flow in the bathroom was very low and we couldn’t use the overhead shower, which was a bit of a pain.

A beautiful house in a beautiful location. It was wonderful to be able to walk through the quiet neighborhood and hear the church bells at night. Clean house and perfect for a small group of ladies. We loved going to the local grocery stores and everyone was so hospitable. The 1 hour drive from the beaches of Pelion was wonderful.

Beautiful views, birdsong, peaceful garden surroundings and very clean. Spent many hours in serenity and was able to unwind. Was a very interesting road to find the property and learned much about respecting and enjoying the little train that travelled in the area

The journey to the cottage qas confusing and not for the faint hearted. We arrived late which made things tricky. However, we loved the cottage. Beautifully and thoughtfully renovated. Views were amazing and we loved being visited by the local cats and puppies in the morning.
We went on the Pelion train (a must)
We visited lots of beautiful places and made some lovely friends. Including at the ouzeria only open on Sunday. Definitely want to come back. We even left our beach umbrella behind to ensure a return visit! Thank you x

Enjoyed our time there. However, initially had trouble finding it and as my husband has some mobilìty issues it took him a few days to feel comfortable managing the terrain/stairs. Overall it was a delightful place to stay.

What a place!
We so enjoyed being at Oliver’s Cottage in Ano Gratzea! The house was beautiful and tucked away in the hills. Truly great views. Very nice stay!! Highly recommend. And the area it’s situated in is wonderful. Two hours from Meteora. Three hours from Philippi and Thessaloniki. 5-10 Great beaches within 5-60 minutes!

Beautiful view, but on the terrace and balcony no shade.
Hard to reach, not easy to explore the pilion or to go to the beach.
Fit for wanderers in spring and autumn.
When we arrived there was no one to let us in, no key in the door. We waited almost two hours, hope it was a misunderstanding...

Charming Greek mountain house
Lovely house, splendid views, wonderful olive grove location. Richard provided excellent directions which were very helpful, as well as other tips for things to do locally. The drive to the house is rather hair raising the first time but you soon get used to it! It's lovely for either relaxing at home or exploring the Pelion peninsula. Of the west coast villages, Kato Gatzea - the nearest and one of the smallest - was our favourite. We'd be happy to stay here again if we come back to the Pelion and would love to come back at a cooler time of the year when we could do more walking.

Remote cottage in a beautiful area
Quite challenging access for this property, not for faint-hearted drivers. Property very well-maintained and clean, easy to live in. Good walking direct from the cottage, and well placed for the majority of the peninsula. No welcome basket or gift which is unusual for Greece (especially as we arrived on a Sunday evening); not a very friendly village either - which is also most unusual.

My son and I spend 14 wonderful days here in Juli. We enjoyed the beautiful cottage and the tranquility of the village. The owner, Richard Dawson, is friendly and helpful and knows the area well.
The Pelion peninsula is excellent for hiking. If hiking is your main reason for coming here, you should consider going in spring or fall, as the summer is too hot for longer walks. I would certainly recommend that you hire a car, because you will want to drive to various beaches and villages and when you need to get supplies for the fridge. If you are a timid driver, the last, steep drive up into the village might be a little intimidating.
Some of our favorite restaurants in the area were: Maria and Yorgos' cafe in the village, Paris' in Kala Nera and the restaurant at Sakia Camping next to Kala Gatzea.
We were not disappointed- the cottage is lovely and the whole area quite spectacular.

Truly wonderful views
We stayed at Oliver's Cottage for a few days this September. It could not have been more perfect. Charlotte and Richard are extremely welcoming hosts. I could sit all day and look at the view across the olive groves to Trikeri island and the far shores of the Pagasetic. The cottage is absolutely charming and the village of Ano Gazea is great fun. We had some wonderful walks; the cobbled paths make it a walkers' paradise (provided you have stout footwear) The sea in that area is wonderful - beautifully clear, lots of fish, and significantly warmer than on the Aegean side of the Pelion. We also took the opportunity to take a day trip on their beautiful classic yacht, which I thoroughly recommend; we even saw dolphins. All in all, an excellent find. We shall return.

Hikers Paradise
Thank you Charlotte and Richard . We had a great stay in Ano Gatzea . What an experience ! It was like going back in time . Your cottage with its modern comforts fits perfectly in the beautiful old village . Ano Gatzea is stunning ! We loved walking the narrow cobbled stone paths around the village , up into the hills or through the olive groves down to the water . The views are everywhere , the food was amazing and the local people were very friendly . We were so lucky to find your beautiful part of Greece and we treasure our stay there .
