About this house rental
We are happy for travellers to contact us for shorter stays, pricing options, particularly outside the peak summer season.
LATEST : optional MICHELIN STAR CHEF available for cooking and service on site.
Set on 25 acres of luscious rolling countryside with its centennial oaks, streams, ponds, and just 3 miles from the Atlantic Ocean's beaches, originally a family holiday house, this property boasts a tennis court and wild/ fresh water swimming for the sportsmen, lazy afternoons playing the Steinway or perusing one of the thousand volumes in the great panelled library for the reflective. It is furnished with the owner's collection of art and furniture that spans 4 centuries of French master craftsmen's work.
The current house is said to have been settled in the 14th century. All that remains of the older house is the part that is the kitchen today: wattle walls on a stone foundation sunken by the passing years. Extended mainly in the 19th and 20th century, the last 30 years of restoration and extension have yielded what you can see and enjoy today.
Supplementary guests...: Guest cottage is a supplementary option.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
The main house has 6 bedrooms and can sleep 12. 10 adults in 5 double bedrooms. 2 children in single beds in a small (but charming we think) attic bedroom with 2 single beds. The optional (and supplementary) cottage has 2 bedrooms which can sleep 3 or 4 with an air mattress on the floor. Overall, it is important for us to know what guests require at the time of the reservation or well in advance of arrival.
The rates above are standard rates only, not high season/ Christmas/ NYE rates.
In order to keep the Croix Rompue affordable, our rates depend on occupancy, bedrooms used and services required.

We had a great stay in spite of some logistical issues that we shared with Anthony. We also received great suggestions from Anthony ahead of our arrival. His knowledge of the region was greatly appreciated.

We really enjoyed the experience of staying in the Manor House. It is in a beautiful peaceful setting with the large lake, black swan, ducks and coypus. There are also several nice beaches nearby and interesting towns and villages to visit.

A Restful Retreat
A charming house with shabby chic and unique features that make this a relaxing place to stay. We stayed with a party of 13 adults and teens plus 5 lively dogs and EVERYONE had fun - swimming in lakes, walking the grounds, eating and drinking French food and wine and hanging out in a grand old French house. The owner was so helpful and his housekeeper was in hand to provide help and support when needed. A truely magical place. Local beaches and shops sbd restaurants were also not far and well worth a visit.

Just Wonderful
We stayed for a week at the manor and enjoyed it immensely. Our group consisted of three generations, and everyone loved it. It’s in the middle of the beautiful countryside, but grocery stores and other amenities are not too far by car. There are markets in one town or another most days of the week. There is good wifi in one part of the house (the library- which is a great place to hang out), but otherwise you’re offline, which we actually really liked. We spent a lot of time outside and ate most of our meals by the pond, watching the swan and the ducks and the coypu. My favorite time was at dusk, looking out at the pond from the window and listening to the birds and the frogs. Anthony is the most welcoming, friendly, and helpful host I’ve ever had in many years of renting vacation homes, and Virginie the housekeeper was also super responsive and helpful. We would definitely come back if we are ever back in the area.

Great Stay in Besneville
A great stay at la Croix Rompue! The house was lovely with plenty of room - full of character and charm. We loved the library in particular - a great place to unwind and relax. The grounds were beautiful and the tennis court much enjoyed. Anthony was responsive and easy to coordinate and check in went smoothly. Would definitely recommend!

Most of this house has been rebuilt but it feels authentic. Lots of rooms to discover and plenty of bathrooms. The grounds are great to enjoy on lazy days. Looking out over the pond it was amazing and amusing to watch the local wildlife.

A lot of history lives in this wonderful house. A journey of discovery across time opens up in every room - nature, tranquility and good energy make you forget time and space. We are deeply grateful that the amiable landlord has given us the chance to rent his precious property. We will be back for sure!

Privileged to stay in such a warm and welcoming grand French manor!
As you drive up to La Croix, you are immediately impressed by this magnificent and grand house, set in idyllic and tranquil countryside. Open the door and you are welcomed into a warm and comfortable home. La Croix truly has a soul: relaxed, welcoming and gracious. You can feel the history and grandeur of the old building, whilst the new addition, perfectly blends to provide you with the modern convenience and comfort.
The main rooms have underfloor heating, so you always feel warm and cozy. The bedrooms are very comfortable. Everything is clean but also relaxed enough so you don’t feel the need to tiptoe around.
Our Christmas Day was perfect, with dinner served in the main dining room, lit by the soft glow from the candles in the chandelier. So special.
Anthony could not have been a better host. His communication before and after our stay was impeccable. You also realise that he truly has opened up his home to you. We felt like trusted family guests rather than paying customers. The check in and support from the local house manager, Dan, was also excellent. He helped us with the ordering of our Christmas dinner and checked to make sure everything was ok. The check in and out was easy.
The house is only one part of the story of La Croix. The grounds and local area are also stars. Countryside to meander and get lost in, but local supermarkets and village markets are only 15 minutes away.
We’re recommending staying at La Croix to all our friends and happy to do so to you too!

This isn't the review I expected to write, if I'm being honest. First: the house was immaculate, in a great location for our adventures, and truly the best part of our trip. The property is breathtaking and serene at the same time. A+. Unfortunately, we had a health emergency for one of our family members while there. Anthony, Dan and Agathe could not have been more helpful and caring. Their support and aid during what could've been an awful time were incredible. We'll forever be grateful to them for that. So, for you reading this, I hope you don't have the same experience we did, but if you do for some reason, you'll be in good hands.

Gorgeous Property
A magnificent property that exceeded all our expectation. The garden was just as beautiful as the Manor. The swans and two little ducks we named Lucy and Ricky were quite entertaining. And most importantly Anthony and staff at the Manor were all a joy to communicate with. I hope we all get to return some day soon!

Fantastic, remotely located large property
This property is well laid out and the communal areas are nice and spacious, with an excellent dining room and study area. The grounds are fantastic, although none of us ventured into the outdoor swimming pond. The house gave everyone enough space, but there was a large variance in the quality of the bedrooms. During our stay, the communication of the property manager, Dan, and the property owner, Anthony, was excellent. The whole time we felt well looked after and problems were dealt with quickly. We briefly lost power to a few of the bedrooms and Dan came around and dealt with it swiftly. Additionally, Dan made a lot of effort to accommodate our requests. In the future, we would consider returning to this property. The property was well connected to reach the main sites we planned to visit.

Uniquely Beautiful and Historic
We were an extended family group of 10 of very diverse ages, interests and locations. We rented La Croix Rompue for a week in early July and were greatly impressed with its rural charm and its easy access to many of the beauties of Normandy. From the D-Day beaches, museums and cemeteries, to the wonder of Mt. Saint Michel, and from the Bayeaux Tapestries, to the restaurants and shops of Barneville-Carteret, there was always much to do and places to go. Another week in the area would still not have been enough time. Most impressive, however, was the house itself and the grounds. Besides the history of the house , it was immaculately kept. There was room for everyone and many places to relax and read, or to join others for meals and conversation. The two story library was a great favorite and was sufficiently large that it frequently held several different activities at once. Another favorite was the large terrace overlooking the lake and the swimming pond. It was a frequent location for meals and to watch the swans and ducks, all of which we named. Both from the inside and the outside, this is one of the most attractive properties we have seen anywhere. We hope to return in the near future, since there is much more we want to do in the area and we feel this is the best possible home from which to do it.

Magical!
A secluded oasis for 14 of our friends and family to gather and spend a relaxing week together. The grounds are breathtaking and the layout of the home is perfect for everyone to be together, but to still have privacy since there are several different areas of the house. We loved having dinners together in the large dining room, relaxing together in the spacious but cozy study and we all loved walking around on the grounds...the kids had so much room to roam and play. We visited many of the local sites - Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, etc and loved coming back to the house each afternoon/night to relax together. We hope to visit again soon!

A perfect New Year!
With a group of friends we had a wonderful time around New Year in La Croix Rompue. Arriving after Christmas we came to this peaceful place to spend a few days away from noise and work.
We found a beautiful estate, well equipped and decorated with charme and taste. We feld like beeing in a castle. We stayed nearly all evenings in the house, cooking and sitting next to the huge fireplaces.
The garden is a dream with the big lake and the swimming pond.
We could imagine how it would be in summer.
The owner, Anthony, was extremely kind and generous, the property manager, Daniel, was really helpful whenever we had questions.
A New Year to remember!

superb home and vacation
As for our 40th wedding anniversay, we rented this manoir for a goup of 5 couples; I can not say enough good things about this beautiful place. While we were there the weather was perfect; we had daily excursion to various sites (all within 1-2 hr drive, normandy beach, Mont. St. Michell, Bayeux tapestry, etc); we gathered each evening by the pond with grogeous sunset, black swans in the water; our group was made of great cooks /foodies, so we cooked our dinners at the house. The kitchen is somewhat small but it was cozy, full of charm, and was well equipped with all cooking necessaries. The dining room and the living room were absolute joy to gather in at nights. The library is extremely well stocked with all manner of books. The steinway piano was a special treat given one member of our group was able to provide nightly music. Overall, I would go back to this manoir in a heart beat. The owner, Anthony, was so kind and helpful awnsering all our questions before our trip. The manager, Daniel, was resourceful in helping us arrange an overnight trip to Sark and providing useful informations such as various local towns' open market days. While all bedrooms were so charmingly and comfortably decorated; the tower master bedroom was exceptional with it luxurious tub and shower. Thank you Anthoy for opneing your home to us.

A Bit of Paradise in Normandy
A wonderful place to bring together friends and family
If relaxed yet graceful living is your thing, then this is the place for you.
La Croix Rompue is a medium-sized estate in Lower Normandy, within easy reach of Cherbourg, the D Day Landing Sites and Mont Saint Michel.
The original structure which is over 400 years old been sympathetically modernized and extended over the last ten years to make a large graceful home with ample space for large gatherings. The house can comfortably accommodate 16 people between bedrooms in the main house and an adjoining guest cottage
The main structure has a well-equipped kitchen, which will suit the more adventurous cooks; modern appliances including a Nespresso machine that proved tremendously useful. Many companies in France have produced more economical capsules so this becomes an economical way to make great coffee, a godsend in the mornings. There are large living and dining rooms in the main house both with fully functional fireplaces, in particular the main living room is double height with a library at the balcony level. The bedrooms are comfortable, and furnished in period style. The many bedrooms windows afford wonderful views over the countryside. The bathrooms were clean and functional and also have great views.
The house is surrounded by a beautifully tended garden with large swimming ponds. To one side of the garden the owner has recently added an Astroturf tennis court; this was in active use during our stay. Beyond the formal gardens are surrounding pasturelands that are used by local farmers, this adds to the bucolic setting of the estate.
Within 10 to 15 minutes drive of the house all necessary services are to be found, this includes supermarkets and the weekly Saturday market in Barneville. There are also great local beaches, and at least one trip to the cliffs at Cap de Carteret, preferably at sunset, is mandatory during a stay.
Despite the beauty of the surroundings countryside, and we had planned to visit many more of the local attractions; we spent most our time in quiet seclusion enjoying the wonderful local setting of the house and it’s fabulous gardens, swimming ponds and tennis court. It was hard to pull ourselves away on the day of departure. All the more reason to look forward to future stays at La Croix Rompue.

magnifique

An Enchanting Holiday
Beautiful, grand, elegantly furnished manor house in tranquil setting - lake with swimming area, large garden, tennis court, all surrounded by fields, sweeping horizons and close to lovely villages and stupendous beaches. This place is luxurious and spacious, yet relaxed and comfortable. It is also very private - a perfect escape from urban life! Lots of activities - we listened to music, played the Steinway, enjoyed parlour games, read books from the library, played tennis, swam, cooked, lounged by the lake or explored the Normandy beaches and excellent local restaurants and markets. A superb treat!

Beautiful, unique, luxurious, secluded, dream home
Le manoir is an absolute gem of a place to stay, we all felt so lucky to have found it, it is like the home we always dreamt of having! A glorious setting, completely private, it really feelt like we had discovered a hidden treasure. The charming Carteret and Barnville are near by with all the shops/food/cafes we needed and lovely walks along the cliffs as well. We were there in September and felt very fortunate to have a couple of days of sunshine, but to be honest we were just as happy next to the roaring open fire.

August 2015 at the Manoir
On the practical side of things, we were disappointed to learn of a charge for linen and towels a few days before the start of our stay, although this charge was later waived. The housekeeper forgot to bring the towels and had to be reminded about these. We had arranged with the housekeeper to ring her on arrival, which we did, but did not receive a response to various messages for over 3 hours, therefore there was no one to meet us at the house, although it was unlocked and she arrived about an hour after we did, after a further call. We were without hot water in the Tower bedroom for almost 4 days. We were surprised that we had to clean the fridge on arrival, and thought the kitchen was not the cleanest generally, although the rest of the house was fine. We found the cooking and dining equipment quite limited, and there were only 6 of us. We also had to dry all the soft furnishings for the outside furniture on arrival as these had been left out in the rain. In the children's attic bedroom there were quite a few misplaced wooden slats on one of the beds. The CD player was broken in the dining room.
It was inconvenient only having one house key, which operated all all the downstairs doors. We did ask for another one, but were told that the area was quite safe, so the house could be left unlocked.
The house arrival notes stated the housekeeper was meant to come every other day to clear away from the night before and generally tidy up downstairs. However the housekeeper only came once more during our 8 night stay to attempt to fix the hot water issues.
It would have been useful to have a 'house book' detailing where things like fuse boxes and boiler switches might be located (apparently these things are vulnerable in bad weather), and how to operate the TV, DVD, etc?
The Manoir is, however, a lovely place to stay, even though it unfortunately poured with rain a lot of the time! We made full use of the quality tennis court and fishing on the small lake [which we found out is mainly good for carp fishing], and the wonderful piano. We even tried swimming in the pond, which was not as bad as you might think. The Manoir is situated in a very large enclosed garden, the rest of the estate being farmland. There is another farm-type house very close to the Manoir.

Luxurious, welcoming chateau in a gorgeous setting
We were stunned to drive through the gates of the property. The swimming hole, the pond with two white swans and a blue heron, cows placidly gazing at us from across the fence. Upon entering, the dramatic, capacious library was immediately inviting and a walk through room after room confirmed that the photographs did not do the house or property justice, a rarity in our experience. The well equipped, old fashioned kitchen was practical and had up to date top shelf appliances. The wood burning barbecue delivered fabulous tasting steaks. Cool weather meant an excuse for a roaring fire in the library fireplace the better to play scrabble by and of course, perfect sleeping conditions! The beach and cliffs just a 10 minute drive away were spectacular. There were also wonderful restaurants for a leisurely lunch (or dinner) with amazing quality in terms of views, service and importantly, exquisitely prepared fresh seafood. Tony was extremely knowledgeable about the area and helpful in every regard. We can't wait to go back!

One of a kind!!
This is simply an amazing property, very well maintained with top amenities. Furnitures have been chosen with tremendous taste and no expenses were spared to make every room very comfortable. We organized a family reunion with 13 people and everybody had a fantastic time. The grounds are very well kept and we enjoyed playing tennis, swimming in the pond and fishing in the lake. The property is also 30 minutes from St Mere L'eglise and Utah Beach, making it an ideal home base to visit D-Day museums and monuments.
Anthony is very responsive to any question and has been a great host.
Bottom line is that we cannot wait to be back in this magnificent property!

Le Manoir was the perfect setting for the get-together of our extended family, from teenagers up to Granny (who was able to be accommodated in an improvised bedroom downstairs).
It is spacious, beautiful, tranquil, and has everything you need for total relaxation and enjoyment. We made extensive use of the Steinway, the tennis court and table tennis table, as well as the swimming pond, but the highlight was probably the meals out on the terrace, sipping wine and soaking up the lovely surroundings - and trying to track and identify the mysterious aquatic creatures in the lake. Otter, beaver, coypu? We weren't sure.
The wifi wasn't working while we were there, but the adults in the party weren't too disappointed about this, and there was so much else to enjoy for the children that it really didn't matter. We variously went to local markets, swam in the sea at Carteret, visited Utah and other Landing sites, but the house and gardens were so gorgeous that actually we were perfectly happy just being there. A very special place.

This house really is a treasure. We stayed there in August with 12 people for a week and though there was a lot of rain it was no problem since there is so much space!! We read in the well equipped library, cooked in the old fashioned kitchen or used the breaks of rain to play a bit tennis. The kids used to play a lot of old fashioned games as WLAN didn't work for a few days and they loved it. It's absolutely quiet and peaceful there. Anthony, the owner, doesn't live nearby but he nevertheless helped us when some problems with the shower occurred. Every morning Ann Marie delivered baguettes, croissants etc. and helped with the dishes. And our dog loved the lawns around the house!
If you stay here weather doesn't matter any more :D!

Peace and tranquility personified. The setting is stunning. A pond and gently falling lawns with a pastoral backdrop. Great to sit on the patio to see the sun rise and bask in golden colors at sunset (with a glass of wine). The manor is quite spacious with Library as the most stunning and comfortable room with a Steinway piano and great books in the gallery. With many bedrooms and bathrooms the Tower suite is most special. A real getaway! The negatives are few and manageable. The gallery in the Library has no rails which can bother people who have difficulty with heights. And there is a shortage of closets or armoires. The housekeeper Madame Hicher was a gem helping us to understand the house and solve problems.

We had a fantastic stay, the house was beautiful and the grounds were truly amazing. Great fun was had with the sports available (Tennis and Table tennis etc) keeping our family entertained for hours, along with fishing and looking at natures creatures around the property, frogs, ducks, birds and cows etc, which our 5 year old particularly liked.

a five star rating is unsatisfactory, make it ten!
equally inadequate are words to describe this treasure chest -
you have to go there to believe it - and to find the magic of the place -
"And this, our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything."

This holiday address seemed too good to be true when we first found it. And often that means that something is not as it is portrayed. However, Le Manoir de la Croix Rompue is every bit as beautiful (maybe even more) as it appears in the pictures. We were astonished when we arrived, and became more speechless after Anne Marie showed us room after room after room. We stayed with four couples, two of which with children. Each had their own 'wing' in the house which was perfect for the ones with children (who could share a bathroom). We enjoyed the comfort and luxury of the master bedroom with a perfect bed. Of all the things in the house, the comfortable bed is probably most difficult to forget and I will get the same one at home for sure.
We loved spending time both inside and outside the house. Seeing the kids and dogs running around on the grass, others playing tennis, while someone else was fishing. It was just perfect. Then sitting down for dinner at the big table, enjoying a meal made in the beautiful and fully equipped kitchen. We often stayed in the dining room until late at night.
Anthony (the owner) is truly wonderful. The email conversations prior to our departure haven been truly amazing. I can only assume he is a busy person, but he has taken time to inform us and answer any questions we had in the most delightful way. During our stay he could be reached at all times if we needed him.
I really don't have the words to describe how perfect this house and surrounding area are. One really needs to experience Le Manoir de la Croix Rompue. I recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy privacy, space, a deluxe accommodation in beautiful Normandy.

La Croix Rompue is a hidden treasure. Quite literally, because it's tucked away in a maze of small country roads that suffer from the general lack of French road signs. On the upside, that's really the only remark one could make of this gorgeous property in the Barneville Carteret region. We spend a week at the beginning of May 2011and it turned out to be a week to remember.
The house certainly makes an impact. Spacious, very well kept grounds, a tennis court, a private lake and terraces welcome you from the outside. Inside, you feel at home immediately. After an hour it's like you have come here forever; La Croix Rompue fits like a glove.
Everything, from the fireplaces to the library and from the Steinway to the bedrooms, displays a house that has been lovingly kept by its owners. This is the family house you'd like to have in France. How fortunate we felt that the family is willing to share it with visitors!
The owner, did his utmost to ensure we had a pleasant stay and the housekeeper was available for any questions we had. She also set the table for breakfast and made sure the fires were lit in the morning. That's the kind of welcome la Croix Rompue offers!
So if you're looking for a fantastic place to stay in France: stop looking!
