About this chalet rental
Chalet Pic Rouge is a traditional Alpine chalet rental in a quiet and scenic site at the foot of Mt. Blanc in the Chamonix Valley. Located in the resort town of Les Houches, the chalet is an hour's drive from Geneva Airport, a three-minute walk from the Le Tourchet beginners' ski lift and 1.2 km from Bellevue cable car and the main Les Houches ski area.
The chalet is a five-minute walk from shops, restaurants and ski rental. It is the end chalet in a terrace of 4 adjoining properties with private parking. It is away from the main road in a peaceful area, where local families live year round. It offers a traditional Savoyarde atmosphere with access to 5 top ski areas in winter and hundreds of hiking & biking trails in summer.
CHALET DETAILS:
The chalet can accommodate 6 guests but in winter 4 or 5 is a more comfortable number. In summer the veranda offers extra outdoor dining and seating space.
Guests bring their own bed linen and towels but if you would like to hire them the price is £20 for the double bed and £15 for each single bed. Please ask when you make your reservation. Y
GROUND FLOOR:
The ground floor has a lounge / dining room, a separate kitchen and a bedroom with standard double bed and bathroom with shower and wc.
LOFT:
The loft space is under the eaves with a sloping roof and a very low ceiling. There is one bedroom with 2 single beds (+ folding bed) and a further 2 single beds on the mezzanine. Note the sloping loft ceiling height is a maximum 166 cm (5ft 4ins) - this is ok for children but not really comfortable for adults, who must stoop upstairs. Access to the upper floor is by a spiral staircase and the mezzanine sleeping area has a balcony open to the lounge. There is a separate bathroom with small bath tub and wc.
CHALET EQUIPMENT
All beds have duvets and pillows. The house is generously equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, TV (only for use with dvd player), free wifi and Bose Soundtouch speaker to connect your own music from your phone or tablet.
The kitchen is very well equipped with plenty of quality pans, plates, bowls, glassware and cooking utensils. It has an under the counter fridge with freezer compartment, a dishwasher, microwave, liquidiser, electric mixer, stove-top expresso machine, French press coffee maker, toaster, electric kettle, fondue set and raclette set.
The lounge has a dining table seating 6, a comfortable 3-seater corner sofa and a couple of soft chairs. Books, maps and a selection of DVDs are for guests' use. There are also a few games for children and adults.
GARDEN
The fenced and gated private garden has shrubs, flower beds and tubs and is mostly laid to gravel. There is outdoor seating and dining and in summer the chalet gets sun during the morning, afternoon and evening. The timber-decked veranda gets morning sun and fabulous sunset mountain views and there is a seating area at the front of the house to enjoy the evening sun.
WHO STAYS AT CHALET PIC ROUGE?
The chalet is perfect for couples and families. Guests appreciate the convenience of private parking, the beautiful garden and views, as well as proximity to local attractions, hiking trails, ski slopes, shops and other local amenities.
GETTING THERE & GETTING AROUND
A car is useful, especially for families with young children, but not essential as all guests have free use of the Chamonix Valley buses and trains. Several companies offer door-to-door transfers from Geneva Airport - please ask for details. Between 1st November and 31st March by law all vehicles must carry snow chains to fit the two driving wheels when needed or be fitted with winter snow tyres on all four wheels.
LES HOUCHES
Les Houches is an attractive town with traditional architecture and has two well-stocked supermarkets (10 minutes walk away), an organic food shop, bakery, bank, post office, tourist office, chemist, cycle hire and launderette and there are numerous ski and snowboard shops and rental outlets - the nearest is 150 m from the chalet. There are bars, including the Solerey brew-pub 5 minutes walk from the chalet, restaurants and take-away pizzas. An evening bus runs in the winter high season between Les Houches and Chamonix for more choice of night life.
THE SKIING
The Chamonix Valley offers skiing and snowboarding for all levels from beginner to expert. Les Houches has 60 km of pistes rising to 1969 m, and is especially appreciated for its long tree-lined runs, snowpark and World Cup black run, La Verte. The Le Tourchet beginners' slopes are 3 minutes walk from the chalet (open high season only) while the Bellevue cable car is 1.2 km, but easily accessed on the free ski bus, which stops at the bottom of the Le Tourchet lift. The Prarion gondola is a little further on, while the Brevent and Aiguille du Midi cable cars are a 15 minute drive or bus ride away. Beyond Chamonix, the Flegère and La Balme slopes offer fabulously scenic above the tree-line runs, while the Grands Montets is a high-altitude snow-haven where off-piste legends are made. Further away you'll find the resorts of St. Gervais, Les Contamines, Megève, Verbier and through the Mont Blanc tunnel you have access to Courmayeur in Italy. A ski hire shop is a 5 minute walk from the chalet.
SUMMER HOLIDAYS
In summer the Chamonix Valley is famous for mountaineering, hiking, adventure sports and family activities. Walkers will find many trails starting from Les Houches, including the famous Tour du Mont Blanc trail. Several walks start from near the chalet but by using the free buses and trains, you have access to all the amazing hiking terrain of the Chamonix Valley and beyond. With its panoramic views of Mt. Blanc, the Grand Balcon Sud is a favourite. From June to September, the ski lifts take you up to 2000 metres and higher in a matter of minutes, from where you can contour around the flank of the mountains to get the best of the views with minimum effort! Mountain bikers have plenty of choice of route and the chalet offers the convenience of a large veranda for parking bikes undercover. With a top location at the foot of Mont Blanc Les Houches also appeals to those content to gaze up at the shimmering glaciers and jagged peaks. With its sunny garden, great views and veranda with comfortable seating, Chalet Pic Rouge is perfect for relaxing.

Great location with amazing Mountain View’s. Easy access to Chamonix plus further afield through the tunnel or over the pass to Switzerland. Well equipped house, all we needed. Wi-Fi not great. Would stay again but not mid May as in between season & many local restaurants in Les Houches not open.

This was our third time in Les Houches, and Cathy's house, the Pic Rouge, was a great place to stay. It is not very large, but extremely well organised and equipped with absolutely everything you might need. Also, good planning has gone into making life easy for lodgers - if I at times wondered how things worked (stove, recycling, etc), I would find instructions either in an instruction folder or close to the appliance (both in English and French) telling me exactly how to proceed. After many years' experience with (at times not very pedagogical) holiday accommodation, this was absolutely splendid.
A 5-minute walk away lie Les Houches boulangerie and Carrefour for supplies. Another source of supplies was Cathy's generous offer to help ourselves to vegetables, berries and herbs from her little garden, which we gratefully did. All meals were taken on the patio where
an added bonus was the comfortable leather sofa - a great place to sit, gazing up at the shifting cloud formations and light variatons on the Mont Blanc range (or, if one gets it to oneself, a little power nap).
The Chamonix valley has fantastic opportunities for hiking and Cathy's instruction folder gives a wealth of tips for easier and more strenous hikes. We also played tennis, there are courts in Les Houches at the far end of the village, and if you want to go swimming, Lac du Passy is a short drive away.
We had a splendid week in Pic Rouge, and would love to come back.

Property was perfect for the two of us, really well equipped kitchen.
Lovely garden with stunning views and plenty of seating, just the place to relax after a day out.

Perfect location, quiet, well appointed, accurately described with an efficient and friendly host.
We have never stayed at a location with so much information provided by the host. Maps, books, leaflets etc but by far the best was the free train and bus tickets. I would recommend the trip to Vallorcine for walks. The journey by train is worth it on its own.
A wonderful holiday. Many thanks for sharing this fantastic cabin.
Don't be put off by the lack of headroom on the first floor. Children will love it, ours did, and she is 40!

A lovely place to stay with everything you need and fantastic views over the French Alpes.

I can fully recommend it!

Chalet pic Rouge is excellent in every way! We loved the location, the chalet itself and how Cathy had everything labeled for ease of use. Pluses: clear instructions on how to use everything, great shower in renovated bath, outdoor deck with lounge sofa, chair and dining table, cleanliness of everything, guest book details and suggestions, convenient, quiet location, convenience of recycle and trash recepticals. Upstairs is a challenge, even to do the laundry, but that was fully disclosed. Not recommended for anyone over 5' 3"! Overall, a great experience!

Had a really good week at the chalet. It has everything you need, and nice outdoor space with mountain views. The kids loved the upstairs bit, which they described as a 'Hobbit home'! The weather wasn't overly kind to us, but the chalet was cosy and nice to relax in. Thanks Cathy.

We absolutely loved our stay in Chalet Pic Rouge. The kitchen was so very well equipped it allowed us to prepare and cook all our meals rather than eating out. The joining instructions were perfect and everything was as advertised in the initial description. As we are avid walkers we found the array of guide books and maps to be really useful and we used the "Carte d'hôte" virtually every day to take us to a new destination. The weather was excellent during our stay so we ate outside every day on the beautiful terrace. Thank you Cathy for opening up your home so generously. We will be back sure one day to tackle those walks we didn't get a chance to do this time!

This chalet is every bit as charming as it appears in the photographs and the location at the foot of the Mont Blanc range is simply stunning. It has the most amazing outside space - a real luxury in these parts to be able to enjoy the wraparound views in the utmost comfort. With an incredible selection of chairs, tables and even sofas to take in each aspect, the hardest part was choosing where to sit. In addition, it is located in one of the nicest parts of Les Houches and is within walking distance of two supermarkets and several smaller shops and restaurants.
Th interior is quite small - especially the upstairs which has limited headroom - but this is made clear on the property details. The property is furnished to a very high standard, with the kind of quality fixtures and fittings rarely found at this price. It really felt like staying in a much loved home rather than a holiday let. The lovely kitchen was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need - including masses of good quality crockery, cutlery and saucepans.
Praise also to the owner who provided the most comprehensive and honest information about the property and the area.

Chalet is superb - A real Home from Home - everything you need
Upstairs is like a little hobbit hole- low ceilings, but the kids loved it
own tv/dvd player
This resort is very unique and the slopes are pretty quiet..
Gandhi Indian restaurant was great value for money and great food.
Overall would defo recommend and go again.

We had a lovely week. The property is perfect , our children loved the upstairs so interesting and unusual just like the 'Heidi books'The views are amazing and a week was not long enough !
Cathy was so helpful and friendly. We will definitely be returning. Was one of our best holidays.

Thank you for a fabulous stay at your beautiful chalet. We can honestly say, it was the best equipped chalet we have ever stayed in, you have thought of everything one could need. The kitchen cupboards were well kitted out with lovely cutlery, cups, dishes for every dish you can think of to make, a raclette machine and even a fondu.
The space outside was brilliant for relaxing in the sun or sitting or lying down in the hammock on the veranda in the shade. Our very big dog enjoyed this too with the exception of the hammock! The BBQ was useful too.
We particularly enjoyed being in a residential area as opposed to a tourist area and all facilities i.e supermarket, post office and pharmacy are within walking distance. The description of the property and it's facilities, layout and location was accurate.
Cathy made the booking process very easy and was always in contact quickly.
We would recommend this chalet without hesitation to our friends.

Stayed in this Chalet in March 2013. The chalet is slightly up a hill; by the nursery slopes in Les Houches with awesome views from every window.
The chalet with very well equipped with everything you might need including DVD, flat screen TV, wifi, sound system, kitchen with all cooking utensils. The downstairs has a kitchen; dining room/lounge; double bedroom with ensuite shower room. Upstairs is a mezzanine with 2 beds and another twin room and bathroom with small bath. The whole of the upstairs has a sloping roof so adults cannot stand up fully; however this was made very clear at the beginning and the excellent price of the chalet reflects that. We did not find the sloping roof any issue at all and we were 4 adults.
The lady who owns this chalet is very easy to deal with and sends excellent instructions of what you need to do when you get there.
Overall, I would highly recommend this chalet & will definitely look to rent it again when I'm next in the area.

This Chalet was perfect for what my partner and I needed. it's right at the foot of the mountains so the view was amazing. it's in a quiet little villlage, giving you a real feel of a small town in france. the chalet was quite small but perfect for a couple or couple with small children. Cathy the owner was very helpful and easy to deal with.
