Description and History:
174 Saint Philip Street, Unit B – The Alexander Wilson

The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by Dr. Samuel Wilson in 1819. The property was part of the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. One month after purchasing the property he deeded it to his son Alexander B Wilson. Wilson, listed as a planter, built this house in 1820 and occupied the property until his death on November 20, 1840.

Designed in the distinctive “Charleston Single House” style, this home boasts a variety of unique and charming architectural characteristics that have contributed to its widespread popularity. The structure is one room wide and extends several rooms deep, with the narrow side facing the street. Full length piazzas provide ample outdoor living space and shade to keep the house cool. The home is characterized by tall ceilings and large, symmetrically arranged windows on the facades. It also features steep gabled standing seam roofs and entrance door on the piazza side.

This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated “dependency” or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, standing seam copper roof, copper guttering, original moldings, plasterwork, old glass windows, and solid panel doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. It's the real deal!

Saint Philip Square:
Saint Philip Square is an award-Winning collection of historic buildings meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston, and this property is one of seventeen unique rentals. The grounds feature five special outdoor garden areas with amenities such as fountains, dining

Study the area map and you will see our property shares a common border with Charleston’s famous King Street, renowned for shopping, dining, and nightlife. You are as close as it gets to King Street. With a large, landscaped lot you can rest assured your vehicle is nearby.

This impressive selection doesn't even count the gourmet sandwich shops, coffee bars, pizza spots, oyster bars, wine bars, bakeries, ice creameries, or vibrant entertainment and music venues.

Charleston, like Rome, is unique in its rich historical and cultural offerings, and both are extremely walkable cities. All within a leisurely stroll, you'll discover the historic Charleston Battery, Broad and East Bay Street, Waterfront Park, the Four Corners of Law, historic churches and private homes, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Charleston Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Charleston Children's Museum, the Charleston Visitors Bureau, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). This property is laid out very strangely with two queen beds in one room and a double bed in another. We were traveling with another couple and they could not stay with us because of the layout. There also was a small issue with construction beginning upstairs in another unit at 7:00 am 2 out of our 3 mornings. They proceeded to loudly talk on the veranda outside our windows for about an hour. They also had a man wash our windows WHILE we were there without consulting us. It was an interesting way to treat paying guests.

Beautifully decorated, amenities were provided, very clean. Enjoyed our outdoor space on the piazza. We could hear the street noise, but it didn’t wake us up.

My 4 friends and I stayed here for a long weekend. The house was beautiful and clean. The linens and towels were great, tons of awesome small details (nice soap in bathrooms, sound machines in each room, etc). Jamie and her staff were super friendly and very accommodating, we saw them around the property often. Outside street was a little noisy, especially on Saturday night, but as mentioned above, sound machines in each room definitely helped and it’s a trade-off that I’m more than ok with for the great location and awesome place.

Nice place but the noise from the street was almost 24 hours a day. Construction on the property directly next door started before 8 am combined with the street noise it was almost unbearable! There is also a fire station around the corner! We heard fire trucks probably 5 or 6 times at all times of the day in the 3 days we were there. This property currently is not suitable for guests due to the constant noise. We were very disappointed.

We absolutely loved this property! It was spacious, beautifully decorated, well stocked and very clean. The location was perfect -- easy to get downtown, easy to get to Mt. Pleasant and elsewhere -- and the area felt very safe and walkable. Plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby. We couldn't recommend it more highly!

St Philip’s Square is a cozy oasis in the head of the city. This is our second stay and as usual The accommodations included anything and everything you could need for a home away from home. The property is beautiful with a long porch and walking distance to all restaurants, shopping and attractions. Thank you for such a wonderful visit
