About this cabin rental
Reserve your Nature Sabbatical! This vintage and charming 2 bedroom, 2 bath, plus bunk room cabin (sleeps 5-6) is the perfect place to unplug from the craziness of the world and reconnect with yourself, your loved ones, and the life you were meant to live. Science now confirms what the "Ancients" have always known, time in nature is essential to our health and well being. Take a break from screens and devices as pat of your renewal time. Wander our many trails which offer both seclusion and stunning views.
University of Earth is a "Sanctuary of Sobriety" and intoxicants of any kind are not allowed on the land. At the Lost Sierra Retreat Center nature is the intoxicant, come drink in the "moonshine." Leave the cannabis, psychedelics and alcohol spirits at home. Come imbibe on the Spirits of Nature, you will be amazed at the clarity this can offer.
This delightful cabin was built in the 1920’s and has a peaceful nostalgic ambiance; truly a taste of a bygone era! We have named this cabin "Eureka Peak" after one of the local peaks, and is one of a cluster of five cabins that were part of the Penman Peak Lumber Company established in 1925, which was a small working lumber mill until the mid 1940’s.
The cabins are part of University of Earth and the Lost Sierra Retreat Center. All the cabins are within walking distance of the National Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Feather River, which winds through our 40 acres. Stellar views of the Feather River, along with Sierra sunsets and moonlit nights, can be seen from the private back deck and riverside bedroom, along with many wonderful places to view the mountain peaks, Feather River and the local wildlife.
Located along scenic Highway 70, the Retreat Center and land is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land and to add a nostalgic reminder of our industrial age in transition, and to the delight of many of our guests, the Western Pacific railway snakes along the river the length of the property.
Wander our many trails which offer both seclusion and stunning views. Swim in the healing waters of the "Medicine River." Our enchanting riverside sitting areas and hammocks make our retreat center just what the doctor ordered.
Our Nature Sabbaticals offer a unique opportunity in a truly magical setting for our guests to unplug and let nature become the healer and teacher. If you can, our suggested stay is three nights or longer in order to truly allow nature to have its way with you. For those so inclined, each of the cabins have suggested nature immersion activities and ecotherapy practices scientifically validated to promote healing, wholeness and enhanced creativity. Examples are walking barefoot on the delightful riverside sands and enjoying the health benefits of grounding while forest bathing.
Make this your base for exploring the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, Plumas Eureka State Park, and the surrounding areas. The Lost Sierra is a wonderland for hiking, swimming, and personal retreat.
The Lost Sierra Retreat Center offers indoor lodging for up to 30 in our charming and delightfully appointed historic cabins. Our two "Glamping" Yurts provide additional indoor lodging for up to 4. Our serene riverside primitive campsites offer an opportunity for deep nature connection and privacy. Host your workshop here!
There can be an occasional train; there is no set schedule. Most guests enjoy it!
We have a "No Shoe" rule at the cabins. So, rock your sox - or slippers!!
We live on the property so are available to assist if needed, along with our staff.
Also to note: Cell service can be spotty at our rural mountain location. High Speed internet, if needed, is just a short drive away.

A very pleasant stay
We really enjoyed this place. These cabins are spacious and well laid out, the bedrooms are comfortable and the views are quite lovely. I understand it is going off the rental market for a bit, but I would definitely stay there again if and when the opportunity arises.

A Perfect Getaway
Just spent a wonderful weekend in the Eureka Peak cabin. The house is immaculate, while remaining comfortable and welcoming. Everything is thoughtfully designed and organized. They even left special towels, sheets, and doggie waste bags for our puppy. The kitchen is fully stocked. Whether you are need cast iron skillets for blueberry pancakes or nice wine glasses, you are covered. We loved being so close to the river and to beautiful (snowy) hikes. Janet was incredibly responsive, providing us with dinner recommendations, allowing us to use the fire pit for marshmallow roasting, and extending our checkout time.

Magical Fairy Spot
Staying at Eureka cabin was so lovely! We were looking for a peaceful place for a romantic meditative retreat and this spot was everything we imagined and more. Beautiful space, magical tunnel to riverside trails and views, warm fire at night, and beautiful community yurt sacred space. The hosts were so welcoming and kind during our stay. We will definitely be returning.

Wonderful quiet retreat!
The property was very nice - really clean and well taken care of, super spacious, and an excellent value for the price! A quiet neighbor to Tahoe, we really enjoyed getting away from the city and unplugging for the weekend! Will look to come back for a longer weekend away!

It was a nice silent place that had a great view of the river. Had a great vibe and the cabin owner was quick at responding. I loved my stay and will be staying there again.

Delightful vacation cabins
This was my husband's and my second stay at this lovely place on the Feather River: first in cozy LIttle Feather (cabin 6) and this time in larger Eureka Peak (cabin 3). The units are 1920s cabins that have been modernized to be both comfortable and retain the charm and interest of their origins. The property is on a bluff overlooking the Feather River. The owners have made a wonderful trail to and along the river that includes beautiful seating areas every 100 feet or so. Eureka Peak cabin has a spacious back porch with a beautiful river view. Though the 2 cabins are well-furnished, they do not have dishwashers, TVs, or WiFi. (Cell-phone reception is good, so we used our cell-phone "hot spot" for Internet access.) The owner is very responsive and welcoming. We highly recommend these cabins for folks who want to relax in comfortable, private accommodations while enjoying spectacular natural scenery.

Wonderful cabin, wonderful location, peaceful
What a wonderful setting! The cabin is cozy, spacious and well appointed. The washer/dryer were a big plus for our extended stay (12 days). The view of the river and mountains from the back deck was magical and the many spots by the river to sit and swim are great. We were typically the only folks down by the river and it was so peaceful. Janet was great with communication and really quick about getting back to us. Check in and out were flawless. And the hiking in Lakes Basin can't be beat! Can't say enough good things about our stay!

Fantastic getaway
This is a well decorated but old fashioned cabin. It is a perfect place to relax and unplug from the Internet and TV and “camp” without camping. The big bonus is that there is a short walk down to the Feather River and it is wonderful place to relax and listen to the running water. Another bonus is that it close to all sorts of activities in the Graeagle and Basin Lakes area. The owners run a great set of cabins and I highly recommend staying here.

Peaceful Setting/Charming Cabin
From the moment we walked through the door, we felt at home. It was a hot day and Janet had the fans set up throughout the cabin and there were fresh flowers in vases. The cabin was very tidy and clean. Plenty of room for us three. The charming kitchen was well equipped. The living room furniture was very comfortable for lounging around and reading. We enjoyed the breathtaking and relaxing view of the mountain peaks and river from the deck in the morning as it was in full shade. Beds & bedding were all comfortable. My daughter especially loved seeing the stars from her bed at night. Would definitely go again!

Peaceful Paradise
Our recent family vacation was nothing short of amazing! The tranquility of the Feather River canyon and the hospitality of the property owners was only surpassed by the obvious care and attention that has been put in to the restoration and maintenance of this very special place. My husband and I lived in this cabin community 40 years ago. I'm not sure how the property owners managed to thoroughly update the property while maintaining its charm, but they did. Thank you Janet!
As my daughter said, this place is magical! We can't wait to come back!

Peaceful Easy Feeling.
This property was great. Close to Graeagle but far enough away for tranquility. The river sitting areas were welcoming with firewood and chairs. The cabin was spotless and it had everything we needed. The train did come by once in a while but it is far enough away that it was not a bother. Working with the owner was a breeze. Thank you Janet.

A Lovely Cabin
We so enjoyed our week-long stay in the Eureka Peak cabin. It was perfectly charming, clean, and comfortable. The kitchen was well-equipped. We enjoyed dinner each night on the sunny river-view deck and several times had fun counting the cars on passing freight trains. (But not so frequently that it was intrusive.)
We spent time exploring the property, and it was so lovely up on the bluff as well as down by the river. The cabin was a great home base for exploring the many hiking opportunities in the area.
We'd love to return to Eureka Peak in the future!

Graeagle Get Away
In Graeagle for a wedding. This cabin and property is so comfortable, rustic and beautiful surroundings. The trail down to the river was so much fun and marked very well! Hearing the rushing water daily was so calming. Thanks for a great stay.

Great property and location
This was our second time there and we loved it! Property owners are great and do what they can to make your stay the best. There are several hiking trails on the property and several more biking/hiking trails nearby. We sat on the back porch one night and just marveled at the stars! Will return!

Such a beautiful setting and a cozy cabin
This cabin is one of several on the property yet very private. The deck had a beautiful view of the river below. We ate dinner out there every night. Beds were super comfy and great quilts on the beds. Kitchen well appointed (could use a baking pan). loved the old fashioned cabinets. There is a modern second bathroom (needs a mirror) and a Jack n Jill bathroom between two bedrooms. Great windows all around (no screens so mosquitos feel welcome!). The path down to the river is beautiful and so well maintained. Birds were nesting right outside our windows. I can’t wait to go back. Those Adirondack chairs are calling...Janet was super responsive.

Super relaxing vacation cabin
In my experience, cabins range from shacks to fine homes. This cabin was solidly built and well maintained and historical -- I would be more than comfortable living there year round. Eureka Peak cabin has a gorgeous view of the river canyon from inside -- and even more from the back deck. It is well furnished with comfortable chairs and a sofa. The queen bed was comfy -- slept in it four nights. The property is below the highway, and with the trees, the sound from the road is almost unnoticeable. Trains occasionally come through the valley, but for us that heightened the historic appeal rather than subtracting from the peacefulness. There are plenty of places to sit outside, either overlooking the river on the bluff, along the trail to the river, and by the river itself. Graeagle is a couple miles away, Portola is about 10. The cabin has two bathrooms, one more historic with a claw-foot tub, and one modern. The kitchen was well stocked. We forgot a thermometer, and Janet had one to lend us. She is a delightful person, easy to get hold of, and quick to respond. A super relaxing vacation.
