About this cottage rental
E komo mai!
LA CAPANNA welcomes you to historic Volcano Village and Volcanoes National Park, designated an International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site.
The Giacometti family has a great history of hosting family, friends, and visitors through a variety of outreach and rental platforms since its beginnings in Hawaii. Our community's proximity to the Volcanoes National Park is an ideal place for those wishing to explore the uniqueness of Hawaii Island. It's a wonderful place for lovers of nature and all things creative! Hiking, cultural events, farmers markets, a winery, art galleries, shops, restaurants, and other attractions are close providing lots of memory making choices.
The owner’s grandfather, an Italian chemist who immigrated to Hawaii to work for the local sugar company, purchased the property in 1920 as a weekend retreat away from the heat of Hilo. He promptly dubbed it “La Capanna” which is Italian for “the cabin”. He immediately began hosting friends and other visitors who came to see Madame Pele’s home – Halemaumau crater on Kilauea.
The third generation now enjoys and assumes kuleana (responsibility) for the care and use of the cabin. It has been improved with modern amenities over the years, but every effort is made to maintain its old Hawaii atmosphere. For your reading enjoyment, copies of early guest books are available on site containing firsthand observations of many historical events. Please see examples in our photos!
You will find La Capanna conveniently located less than an hour from Hilo just off Hwy 11 along the central road leading through our quaint little town of Volcano Village. It is within walking distance or short drive to many local restaurants and attractions. The private semi-circle drive is accessible from two sides of the property and leads to the porte-cochere that still shelters the front entry. There is also a large carport adjacent to the house, so larger groups have covered parking for up to three vehicles. Two steps up lead to the double front doors that allow for the easy loading and unloading of luggage and supplies.
The interior reflects traditional Hawaiian sugar era style with natural wood interior walls and vaulted beamed ceiling in the main room. Large sliding windows throughout help to keep the interior bright and allow the trade winds to cool the interior on warm days. For our cool evenings, cozy up to the wood burning stove [wood provided] with a cup of coffee or cocoa and popcorn and enjoy a relaxing family evening. Furnishings reflect the generations that have lived here - a mixture of family pieces, modern mission oak, old family photos and artwork. The spacious main room comfortably seats six and has a Smart TV with Roku streaming and basic cable – you can access your own Netflix or Prime if you like. Free Wifi is also available for your use. The large oak dining table seats six. It’s a great space for family meals or game night. Cozy up on the built-in window seats to read - we keep small collections of both adult and children’s books, periodicals, cards, games, puzzles on hand.
The kitchen is furnished with full size appliances and microwave, as well as enough tableware, cookware, and bakeware to prepare complete meals. We provide basic towels and soaps, salt, pepper, plastic wrap, and foil. The breakfast table seats four and rounds out the space nicely for those who like to hang out with a glass of wine (Hawaiian Sun for the kiddies!) and cook together. Don’t forget to plan a barbeque to take advantage of the local foods from one of our many area farmers markets - the large, covered lanai is right outside the kitchen door and is set up with a picnic table, lawn chairs, and charcoal grill. Kids and dogs can run off steam in the fenced yard while adults check out the unique Hawaiian plants, trees, and birds. And don’t forget to make time for star gazing – the number of stars and view of the milky way are amazing!
The queen bedroom with the main bath and the twin bedrooms with Jack and Jill bath are located at the opposite ends of the main area for privacy. Snuggle into beds furnished with quality linens, blankets, and Hawaiian quilts. Extra blankets and pillows for each bed, as well as Turkish towels, soap, and basic bath supplies are provided. Nightlights light your way throughout our home during the night as our community is dark and quiet. Relax and sleep late before exploring the park (early birds sneak out to see the sunrise over the crater).
Please ask the manager about military and Kama’aina rates.
LA CAPANNA is a fully permitted and insured home with a 24-hour contact. We follow all state and local short-term vacation rental laws including the collection of transient accommodation and general excise taxes.
Disclosure: We have a full security system in place with one exterior camera for the purposes of discouraging trespassers/burglars. We do not monitor our guests.

Great location! Family oriented. Very very clean.

The home is exactly as portrayed - it’s a throwback to a simpler time! Wood paneling, cozy furnishings, and an abundance of doilies that might make you think of a grandparent’s home. My teenage girls didn’t love the aesthetic, but it suited me just fine. Beds were comfy and kitchen and laundry access were big helps.

Beautiful, classic Hawaiian style plantation house! Roomy, spotless, supremely comfortable. It felt timelessand made us feel connected to the place and its history. The grounds are beautiful. The location could not be better for access to the town of Volcano and Volcanoes National Park. This is a wonderful find!

It is charming in a rustic way. It was smaller than we thought and the only heat in the living room and kitchen was a wood burning stove so we spent a lot of time and energy trying to stay warm. The first 2 days there was no live TV but a new spectrum box was brought in. Theresa, the property manager was very accommodating.

La Capanna is a lovely old house surrounded by vegetation but accessible to all the things to do in the Volcano area. We were two couples traveling together, so it was great to have the bedrooms and baths separated by the living area.
Taressa was immediately responsive, when we contacted her about a couple of questions we had.
The kitchen is beautifully equipped with pots & pans and dishes. Guests do need to bring most cooking basics like olive oil etc.
The wood-burning fireplace is lovely, and it made for warm and cozy evenings. The main part of the house is chilly though, so warm clothes are required when the fire isn't lit.
We all had a wonderful stay and we highly recommend this property!

The property was beautiful and Taressa was great at communicating with us before and during our stay! We had a lovely time in Volcano and it was very close to the National Park - which was great as we went many times over our 3 days there. The space was lovely and it was so convenient to park the car right at the door with covered parking and haul our stuff in and out as it was rainy most days! Only downside was building my own fire, as we had mostly chilly days. But I figured it out pretty quick and the property had all the necessary supplies to get it going. There are space heaters in every bedroom that we ran, but for the main living room we had a fire going most days. Lovely trip and would definitely come back and stay here again!

I would live in this home forever if I could. What a relaxing, wonderful place to get away in. Thank you for everything!

A gorgeous space. Mahalo!

Everything was as expected. We arrived in the evening and the check In was easy.
The house is really beautiful, a lot of wood, it is clean and you will find fire wood for the evening..
A good experience.

Perfect location for multi day Volcano NP experience. House as described. Perfect for our family.
4.9
The house had a nice rustic feeling. The fireplace with wood was available for us to use. The kitchen had everything we wanted. It is very close to Volcano National Park and one can even come back during day to rest for couple of hours and head back. There couple of nice restaurants/ Thai food truck nearby. The house is close to street but off the highway. So there is some vehicle noise during day but very peaceful at night. This was not a bother as we were out for most of day time.
Taressa was very good at communicating throughout.

Great house, Great location. The living room was a little cool in the morning, but we have been to Volcano before and knew what to expect (they do get snow once in a while). We love the area, and La Capanna has really good energy.

We really enjoyed our stay in this cozy cabin. It was very clean and had everything we needed. There are a few great restaurants close by and it's really close to Volcano National Park, so perfect for night time visits.

Our party included a couple ladies in their 70's, and they LOVED this cottage, comparing it to Jack London's cottage in Glen Ellen, California. Proximity to the National Park was wonderful, and we've always enjoyed our stays in Volcano.

The stay was pleasant . We also got lucky and had nice weather.

LaCapanna was a welcoming home for our first visit to Hawai'i.
Enough room for 4 adults to hang out together and retire to separate quarters, as desired. The rustic cedarwood walls throughout the home made our stay so inviting. The kitchen is fully stocked with essentials (i.e., pots, pans, plates, mugs, basic cooking condiments, etc.), the bathrooms have plenty of fresh towels (under the sink), and the bedrooms have plenty of blankets to keep cozy at night.
We also made use of the woodburning stove which warmed the whole house and helped offset the electricity pull of the individual room heaters. Having access to a laundry was icing on the cake!
PROTIP: Shower in the secondary bedroom suite sprays warmer/hotter water when the dial lever is closer to the C than the H.
Excellent location for entry into the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to coming back the next time we are on the Big Island.

Really happy with the property. Was in a great location just 5 minutes from the national park. House itself was all we hoped for. Huge yard for kids to run around in. Inside was basic but comfortable with lots of extras like books for kids and kids dinnerware.
Would stay here again.

Can't beat the La Capanna location, minutes from HVNP. Wood fireplace & space heaters work well to handle the nighttime chill. Well stocked with kitchen supplies. Taressa responded quickly & well to a minor issue in kitchen. Hope to stay again!

We rented this property for my family (myself, husband, 5 year old, and grandparents). Due to covid, only parents made the trip. The property manager was fantastic, quick to respond and so understanding. My parents LOVED it there. I tried to rent again for the rescheduled part of our trip, but it was booked. I have recommended this property to others!

We enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and loved having the wood-burning stove to warm the place up. Very enjoyable.

Wonderful, old plantation house. Could not have been better.

We booked our stay at La Capanna months in advance and enjoyed researching the Big Island and the village of Volcano in anticipation for our trip. Taressa was very easy to communicate with and answered all questions, etc. We started in Kona, stayed in Volcano three nights, heading to Hilo to round out the island. Volcano and The National Park are very different from the beach towns. Quiet, with a few small stores, cafes, and restaurants (dinner reservations suggested). We spent two days at the park, including a long, worthwhile walk to see active lava at dusk. We loved this historic rental cottage, which felt very much like a cabin in our home state of Maine. La Capanna is neat as a pin and even more charming than the photos depict. All you need are a few groceries and your favorite beverages. We prepared breakfasts and one evening meal with ease. Mornings were chilly, so we used the space heaters until the wood stove took over. By noontime and into the evening the outside temps were balmy. A number of lifelong memories were made in Volcano.

A historic and charming place to stay. Extremely well stocked for cooking and comfort. The wood burning stove is a wonderful feature that we used every night. The property is perfectly located for exploring the Volcano National Park, the Puna district, and the East side of the Island. I can't say enough great things about this place. The host Teressa is awesome to work with.
4.9
Charming, comfortable, clean, and nicely appointed. Easy access to the National Park.

This was one of the best finds we've ever made on VRBO. Such a sweet little cabin perfect for our desire to stay near the volcano and Hilo, pass up the glitz and go for the charm. We say little cabin, but it was the perfect size for us and our 4 almost-grown teenagers. And a great price for 3 full bedrooms and 2 baths. If you're looking for a charming, cozy (wood stove was perfect every morning) getaway, this is it. And the place was immaculate!

Perfect place for the park visit
Wonderful location for constant enjoyment of the national park. Community has good food, areas to walk and friendly artist vibe. The house was cool when warm outside, property is lush with outdoor living options.

Our party of 6 senior adults very much enjoyed our stay at La Capanna. We all appreciated its unique historic character and furnishings. We arrived on a cool rainy night, having the woodstove was wonderful! The main living area is spacious, the beds are comfortable and the entire home was immaculately clean. The kitchen was well stocked/equipped for easy meals. The yard and patio area were lovely and relaxing.
The location is perfect for visiting Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. We especially enjoyed how easy it was to visit the park later at night to see the lava flows after the crowds had left.
Taressa was a welcoming host, easy to be in touch with and very responsive. We all recommend La Capanna if visiting the Volcano area!
Tip: Volcano Village is small, with one small market and a handful of eateries. Due to current staffing shortages, open hours are reduced. We had been staying elsewhere on the island so had some groceries with us. Others may want to make a stop before arriving.

Comfortable house. Easy to get to.
The only complaint is the coqui frogs. But you get them everywhere on this side of the island.

Our multi-generational group had an excellent stay at La Capanna. We enjoyed the feel of family history in the cottage, and the spacious design was perfect for the six of us. In late March it was cool in the evening but we did not feel we had to use the wood-burning stove. The cottage is great for those who appreciate lodgings with a historic character, quiet evenings, and being just minutes away from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
