Nearby we have a great dining option at the Talbingo Country Club (500 m walk). There is also a supermarket (500 m walk) where you can buy everything you need for your stay. Supermarkets and shops at Tumut are only 45 km drive (30 minutes).
Talbingo offers a lot for visitors apart from the snow regions. There is fishing and water sports, swimming, golf, tennis and bush walking tracks as well as 4WD tracks through Kosciusko National Park and Bargo State Forest. If you feel like kicking back and relaxing with a round of golf, the Talbingo Country Club has a 9-hole course.
Talbingo is at the centre of the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme one of the great engineering feats in the world, and the Tumut 3 Power Station which is the largest power station in the Snowy Mountains Scheme and the largest hydro-electric power station in Australia.
The town is the birthplace of award winning author Miles Franklin. Ken Warby currently holds the water speed record for motorboat racing on Blowering Dam (511 km/ph).
If you are in the mood for sightseeing, Talbingo is an easy drive from many of our popular tourist attractions. The Selwyn Snowfields are just under an hour drive through national park. This is the premier learn to ski and family snow recreation area in NSW. Located in the beautiful Kosciusko National Park, you will love learning how to ski, snowboard, snow tube or toboggan. Snow gear can be hired at Talbingo goPLAYoutside.
On your way, make sure you visit Yarrangobilly Caves, one of the most wonderful limestone cave systems in Australia. You can either take a self-guided tour through the South Glory Cave or join a guided tour of the Jersey Cave or Jillabenan Cave. There are a number of other bush walks at Yarrangobilly Caves, including the Thermal Pool Walk where you'll find a natural spring permanently heated to 27 degrees this is an amazing experience in winter where you can laze back in the warm water while snow is blanketing the ground around you. Great photo shoot. The whole Yarrangobilly area is a haven for photographers and artists so make sure you check out the River Walk and the Bluff Lookout as well as the caves.
Another favourite is the Buddong Falls, just a 50 km drive away, crossing the Blowering Reserve and through the Buddong State Forest. Alternatively, you can follow the Blowering Reserve into Tumut and then back down in the Buddong State Forest. Here you will find an easy 400 metre return walk from the picnic area to the top falls, and a steeper 1.6 km return walk to the bottom falls.
For longer walks, there is the Hume and Hovell Walking Track which you can trek parts of the track. This drive is suitable for 4WD only.
The entry into Landers Creek Falls is a short 15-minute drive from us here at Pether Cottage. This is a fairly decent walk so we definitely recommend setting aside a few hours for this one. The falls are a 10 km return walk from the 2WD car park or a 1.6 km return walk from the 4WD car park (closed in winter) along the Cumberland trail. This is a great place for photos at the end of the trail you will have views that stretch across the escarpment and plunging into the valley below, as well as the clear blue Talbingo Reservoir. At the Talbingo Lookout, you will get a great view of Landers Creek Falls emerging from the cliff.
There are some other fantastic walks and places to visit in the area. Some of our favourites (apart from those we've mentioned) include Coolamine Homestead accessed off Long Plain Road along the Blue Waterholes Fire Trail; Blue Waterholes Campground; Clarke Gorge Walking Track; Nichols Gorge Walking Track; and the Kiandra Heritage Track.
If you feel like taking a break from all the walking and hiking in the area, fishing, water sports and swimming are popular with many tourists and locals. You can fish all year round for rainbow trout, brown trout and redfin in Lakes Talbingo, Blowering and Tantangara, while Murray Cod is often caught in Blowering Dam. Fishing supplies can be hired from goPlayoutside, or purchased at the service station and supermarket.
With so many waterways available for use, you can water ski, sail, canoe, kayak and swim on Talbingo and Blowering Lakes during the warmer weather. There are also many local creeks and swimming holes around including Jounama Creek.
We highly recommend goPlayoutside for your snow and leisure equipment hire including cycling, hiking, water sports and snow sports gear. You'll be out exploring the local area quicker and be hitting the slopes sooner. You'll also find a four-day weather forecast, snow report and road conditions posted on the shop window each day.
There are some great towns and villages to visit if you feel like exploring the local area. WE RECOMMEND TRIPS TO:
► Kiandra - historic ghost town and walk
► Adelong - historic mining town
► Tumut - the gateway to the Snowy Mountains
► Gundagai - home to Australian folklore, the Dog on the Tuckerbox
► Batlow - famous for cold climate fruit including the popular Batlow apples
► Cabramurra - the highest permanently inhabited town in Australia
► Adaminaby - in long periods of dry weather, you may be able to spot remnants of the old town under Lake Eucumbene
► Cooma - home to the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre Surrounded by some of the most sensational scenery.
There is so much to see and do in the Snowy Mountains area, and you can experience it all from Pether Cottage.

Comfortable enough ; garden with grapes, plums, & a peahen (& her chicks), make the stay unusual ; location is good . . near the Talbingo Golf Club, where the Chinese Restaurant has a good list of dishes .
The Tumut 3 Dam & the artificial beach, yatching & swimming area are worth visiting .

We were comfortable with 4 people but I think it would be very crowded with 10. Very little space for eating as a group. We squeezed 7 around a table at the back door - after moving items and sweeping. It would have been impossible indoors. Inside was clean but outdoor areas definitely needed attention.

Our family enjoyed our stay at Pether Cottage as a good base to explore the Snowy Mountains. The house itself is an older style with basic styling but has everything you need.

Charming stay
Pether cottage was a great, quiet cottage where you can take a big breath of fresh air. It was clean and had everything we required for our short stay. Talbingo is such a beautiful little town.
I will add that the shop in Talbingo does not have everything you need, especially if you have dietary requirements so best to stock up before getting to Talbingo. And that the fence on one side of the property is knee high so if you have curious/ energetic dogs it is very easy for them to jump it.
Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay!

Tranquil little cottage
We love Talbingo and go regularly, and our stay this time in this little retro cottage was great. It's not fancy but more importantly it was clean and tidy, and the linen on the beds was nice and crisp. The kitchen was equipped with lots of new pots and pans which was nice, and the bathroom looks like its had a bit of a makeover compared to the photos online. We loved how well the backyard was enclosed and our dogs loved running around in the grass. The BBQ was dirty when we went to use it, but we gave it a good clean and enjoyed having some cook ups for brekkie and dinner... we did clean it afterwards too for the next people. Eating at the outside table was a bonus, its so peaceful and no humidity. The check in process was made super easy by David and Hilary. Netflix was a bonus for the evenings. We're glad that we got to stay at Pether Cottage and would love to stay again.

The manager was quick to respond, which was fantastic. He lives in Queensland so I guess he has little control over how clean the property was. But my family and I were not at all impressed Obviously dogs have been sleeping on the beds. Bedding was very hairy, sheets not changed from last guests Floors not swept or mopped Extremely little bath products in bathroom, face washer and towels as thin as ragsI would not recommend this property unless you had dogs that you wanted to keep inside and don't mind it not being clean

We love Talbingo
We stayed here with three kids & our dog & we fell in love with Talbingo! The house was perfect, and also had wifi so I could also work while being away. A great place to go and enjoy nature and each others company!

Beautiful location - comfy home
Talbingo is a beautiful town, this was my first visit and we loved every minute of our stay.
The house is comfortable and fairly clean.
Some of the kitchen utensils were overused and may need to be replaced.
Our dog enjoyed the big fenced backyard. There is also a place to have a campfire in the backyard which is perfect for the chilly months.
All is all, a wonderful place!

Clean, neat, tidy, well-appointed, comfortable holiday home.
We had a great time during our stay at this property. The booking process was easy and there was good communication through emails and text messages. Any questions asked were promptly responded to.
The property itself provided a very comfortable stay, an added bonus being that we could have our dogs with us. There was a large-ish fenced back yard where they could have a run, although not a high fence so we didn't leave them alone out there. There was also an undercover verandah area with a table and chairs where we could sit and have a drink. The cottage itself was very clean and neat with a great heater. Well-appointed kitchen. Good washing machine and dryer. Foxtel was an added bonus! Easy walking distance to the shops, which catered for all the basics. The location was great too, close proximity to the lake and park and easy driving distance up the mountain to the snow-fields.
An over-all positive experience and great holiday home, highly recommended, good value-for-money!

Cosy little cottage
We enjoyed staying at Pether Cottage. The bedrooms are very warm with Daikin heaters. The hot water from shower/bath came instantly which made bathing little children very easy. Talbingo is a lovely town to stay and only short drive to Mt Selwyn snowfield. Pether Cottage is very close to the Country Club and the restaurant there serves very good Chinese food too!

Convenient dog friendly cottage
Many thanks for another comfortable stay at Pether. Although very cold outside and snow on hills, house was comfortably warm. A nice touch to have house preheated for my arrival. Great backyard for my Collie dog although one frosty morning he had to share it with several kangaroos. Wild horses galore in high country foraging for grass in the deep snow. Tough creatures. Until next time.

Nice comfy cottage. Plenty of room for all of us. Backyard great to hang out in. The house has everything you need. So great we could take our dog. Plenty of wildlife about which we loved. Close to snowfields and great walks close by as well.We were lucky to catch the markets whilst we were there. A lovely time of year to visit.

Great place to stay!
Thank you so much for our stay. It was a Dads weekend with our two eldest daughters (6 of us in total) and we had a ball. Stunning drive into Talbingo and what a beautiful part of Australia. Lovely drive to Mt Selwyn, we even saw wild brumbies each day.
Well worth staying at if you are thinking of a snow trip!

Beautiful homely cottage
Thank you for our stay at Pethers cottage. It was a warm fun house for our family and it was beautiful to be able to bring our furry friend with us to. There was plenty of space to hang snow gear and the kitchen was full of so much appliances which made cooking easy. The nature was beautiful with Kangaroos and Rosellas surrounding. The house was very clean on arrival. Thank you again so much, we can't wait for our next snow holiday x

Could have been enjoyable
We would have enjoyedvour stay if the property was cleaned. It's was evident the floors had not been done, the stove top not even wiped over as also the microwave . The toilet seat had hair all over it as did the vanity in the bathroom and it wasn't hair from the head . The bedding provided smelt and was well overdue for washing. The tv in the second bedroom was stuck on 1 chanel due to the set top box not working. There was also a dead bird on the varanda rail. The owners had been very informative of the area since booking and were great to deal with. Unfortunately the laziness of the cleaner made this stay disappointing. The house is old but if cleaned propley the stay would have been comfortable and enjoyable, we decided to leave late in the afternoon the next day instead of staying our last night to avoid having to cleaning everything like the bathroom before we used it . It's still a great property to book but I would recommend receiving confrontation that it had actually been cleaned before arrival

Great place to stay
Cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable and fun stay in Talbingo! What a beautiful little place.
Nice and close to Selwyn which was so much fun with the kids and the dog was very happy to be able to come along for our little holiday.
We will hopefully be back before the end of the snow season !

Great place to stay
We stayed as a group of 5 and a medium size dog for 3 nights and found the property perfect for us. It was clean and tidy with everything we needed at a good price. The fences are a bit low if you have anything other than a small dog but plenty of spots to tie up. Would

Have stayed at Pether Cottage many times over the years and always enjoyed the experience. This time was visited by the peacock and several kangaroos on front lawn. Despite the frigid conditions outside the cottage is always warm, cosy and comfortable. My Collie dog loves lying round big backyard and never jumps the fences. Great value for money.

Great location and setup for families including the fur baby. Great heating and fantastic water pressure. Fences were too low for our spoodle to be left in the yard.
