Large style beach resort. Very good dining and drink options across the 3 restaurants. Initially stayed in a room with a plunge pool which was too humid for our liking but had a half day's stay in another room upstairs without a pool and it was very nice with great views of the facility, pool and ocean.

Our third stay at the Fortress, it never disappoints. Beautiful hotel and grounds, food is amazing with full menu room service. Can sit on a sun lounge at high tide and watch turtles feeding in the ocean in front of you or release baby turtles from the hatchery on site. What sets it apart is the service, our son is 5 and was so well cared for by the staff.

Amazing property with infinity pool and great proximity to sea. Nice big rooms with great comfort and rustic interiors. Unique design of the room and bathroom within. While not of much beach area and not recommended for any sea sports. However the Welingama beach is a great beach and great for sea sports.

One of the best hotels in all of Sri Lanka! The facility is extremely intimate, personal and peaceful. The rooms and decor are beautiful and modern. The ocean water was crystal blue and extremely clean. The area of Koggala is very quiet and serene. I high recommened this hotel!

We stayed at this great hotel for four nights and received amazing service from our personal Butler, Janaka. Food and drink options were great - with both a la carte and different themed buffet options every evening. Our suite was huge and extremely well equipped - the nicest hotel room I have ever stayed in. The only problem is that the bar is now set too high for future hotel stays!! Highly recommended.

The hotel is certainly not up to the standard of a 5 star as well as the price they charge. Our room was supper dirty and we had to ask for a change. The next room was acceptable but still very dirty. The rooms look run down and not well maintained. We did the Tepaniaki experience and were charge 130 € which is a LOT in Sri Lanka and it was no where near a real Tepaniaky experience. I recommend you avoid it! Do not take a Tintin from any of the staff they are in on it with the one parked across the steel and will try to charge you 20 Us$ to go to Colombo and back when a one way should be in the range of 400/500 roupies... not good to try to steel from tourist on the pretext that they have money... overall I was very disappointed by this hotel!

This was the 5th stop on our tour - basically to relax. When we arrived, the tall front walls and entrance gates resembled a fortress. Beyond was a magnificent veranda and the sea! Reception staff were very attentive and greeted us while our room was readied. The room was on the ground floor, large, comfortable and included a plunge pool. Food options were many, including buffet options. The breakfast buffet was excellent, including Sri Lankan food. Staff fabulous. A lovely place to stay and relax. We will definitely stay there again.

We had a lovely time at The Fortress Resort and Spa. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The grounds and pool area ...very beautiful. The room was very comfortable. Thank you to all that made our stay very pleasant.

Perfect getaway. We came from dubai for 5 nights and enjoyed every moment of it. You can watch wild turtles in the sea from the poolside sun beds. 20 minute tuktuk ride in to Galle area (approx 800-1000LKR). 2.5hrs from CMB airport (approx 11600lkr in AC car with Colombo Airport Taxi)Definitely worth getting the sea view rooms. Waking up to and hearing the waves right outside the room was amazing. Don't book airport transfer or tuktuk's via the hotel as they are massively inflated prices.

very nice property built 2007 with great food & service. rooms with plunge pools a bit bizarre and smell damp, which we'd avoid.small site therefore no sports and only beach to walk on, which is fantastic! No water sports as rough seas, may be wrong time of year(march). Spa a bit dated & clinical.

Stayed at the most expensive suite, the residences. Coming from Dubai I would say the hotel was ok. Very overpriced for what it offers. The pool was good, very close proximity to the beach.

This is a nice property and quite well maintained. Nice pool, though smack in the middle of the property and right as you enter the property. Not a particularly kid friendly place. Put sheets on the sofa in the room for the kids to sleep on. Why not offer rooms with two double beds for people with kids? The children's play room is abysmal - it was locked in the middle of the day, suffice to say no one was in it at any point that we went in there. A TV, a couple of posters and some plastic toys. So much potential to offer something dramatically better. (Note to Mgmt - check out Sandos in Playa Del Carmen to get some ideas. Labour in SL is cheap - take advantage of it.) Beach is rocky and only a small area off to the side of the property that is suitable for taking children into the ocean. Spa treatments were priced at western prices, but spa services were mediocre at best. Staff does try really hard to please, but if you don't have a well trained masseuse, nothing the staff can do. Giving a free treatment after a bad experience is only going to lead to another bad experience because the person in the spa is not well-trained enough. Having the doorman pull out a price list for a tuk-tuk ride to Galle and say it's $25 for what can easily be had for 500 rupees ($3 to $4) doesn't somehow fit with the buddhist character of the country. Was hard to find who was in charge of the place. Seemed to be run by staff.

We had 10 days relaxing here after quite an exhausting 8 day sightseeing trip. The location right on the sea is perfect. The staff are all very friendly & mostly efficient in a laid back way, sometimes they had to be reminded of our requests. The food was very good although quite expensive, the breakfast buffet exceptional. The free wi-fi was good as well. We do like to go out to dinner to experience different restaurants but there was only one half decent within walking distance otherwise we had to get a taxi into Galle where there was not a lot of choice if you wanted wine with your meal.

Very comfortable two night stay with my family ..lovely location on beautiful Kogalla beach.Very helpful and courteous staff . Excellent breakfast buffet and lovely beachfront infinity pool.

As soon as our driver drove up to the front entrance you're greeted by the door man and he then rings a bell to let the staff know that we have arrived, and had all the staff greet us and help us to the lobby! We're welcomed with a cool and refreshing towel as well as a drink! As soon as you enter you're in awe of the pool and beach view! Beautiful hotel layout, room was superb and clean. The staff service was excellent, from the pool boys, to the waiters at the restaurant and the masseuses from the spa treatments. I will definitely be coming back with my friends and family! I already miss the place and I only left 2 days ago! Pure heaven!
