Frequently asked questions

Where is Port Isaac?

A classic, picturesque fishing village on the northern Atlantic coast of Cornwall, Port Isaac is the most southwestern county of England. The village is mostly pedestrianized with steep and winding alleys, but there are two main parking lots on the way in. The next closest towns of Wadebridge and Camelford are each 10 miles away. Additionally, Newquay Cornwall Airport is 20 miles south and most conveniently accessed by car or bus.

What is Port Isaac known for?

A thriving port town from the Middle Ages during the 19th century with clear water and scenic views, the area of Port Isaac has more recently been the backdrop of various television productions — most notably Doc Martin. And thanks to the Doc Martin fans, the area has experienced a recent tourism boom. In the summer months, the 10-man a capella group locally known as Fisherman's Friends perform a weekly ritual of sea shanties and ballads every Friday evening near the harbour. The architecture of the historic village core dates back to the 18th century and is a designated conservation area.

A quick guide to Port Isaac

  • The Platt: A flat, open area that was previously used as the storage and meeting place for local fishermen has transformed into the village’s dining hub called The Platt, filled with pubs, restaurants, and cafes.
  • Postman’s Path: Postman’s Path’s is a beautiful, somewhat challenging, 6.5 mile coastal walking loop from the outskirts of Port Isaac to the cove of Port Quin, then back on an inland trail. The trail is one part of the larger 630-mile South West Coast Path, where you’ll get fantastic views of land and sea.
  • Port Gaverne: Down a hill east of Port Isaac, the little cove of Port Gaverne used to function as a port for shipping slate from a local quarry, but now offers a peaceful and small pebbly beach — one of the safest on this stretch of coastline.

Popular destinations near Port Isaac

  • Polzeath Beach: The best surfing spot in North Cornwall is six miles south of Port Isaac and offers wide and sandy beaches perfect for relaxing. At Polzeath Beach, there are many amenities including toilets, a coastal walking trail, places to eat, and plenty of parking.
  • Tintagel Castle: Treat yourself to a romantic and mysterious sight of ancient ruins on a 13th century clifftop castle, sitting along a windswept peninsula 10 miles north of Port Isaac. Tintagel Castle has been occupied since the Romans and is the supposed birthplace of King Arthur. You can also visit more ruins at the nearby island, or Merlin’s Cave below the cliffs by the water.

Best neighborhoods in Port Isaac

  • The Top of the Village: Trewetha Lane and New Lane form the main route through the village to Port Gaverne. Fore Street is the main street in the village, lined with galleries, tearooms, shops, and restaurants. At the bottom of Fore Street is the historic core of the village, including The Platt, where food and drink are the main attractions.
  • The Harbour: Roscarrock Hill forms the western boundary of this quaint harbour. Take in the sunset at The Harbour or watch the fishing boats return. Then when the tide is out, you can scramble around on the breakwater.
