Best Neighborhoods in San Andres

  • San Andrés: San Andrés is the main town on the island with the airport, marina, main public beaches, and the bulk of accommodations, restaurants and shops. The town occupies about 20% of the entire island. North and west of the airport are many small hotels, whereas south and east of the airport consist of the main commercial area, resorts, and restaurants.
  • Rocky Cay: South of San Andrés on the east side is a small community around Rocky Cay Bay. Rocky Cay is a tiny islet that one can wade out to for snorkeling. Feast yourself on nice views of the island, where you can also see a shipwreck and grab drinks at a tiny beach bar. There are restaurants, accommodations, supermarkets, and a kitesurf school.
  • San Luis: South of Rocky Cay is San Luis, an area with more budget accommodation, less touristy beaches, and includes Playa San Luis and Jinny Bay.

Popular Destinations Near San Andres

  • Providencia: Providencia is a small, less developed island that’s a 20 minute plane flight or four hour boat ride from San Andrés. The island’s singular coastal road can be circumnavigated in less than one hour with a smaller island, Santa Catalina, connected by footbridge. Bahia Aguadulce is the main tourist area with a handful of small hotels and restaurants, while Isabel Village is the main area of town with a few food markets and shops. The island is on top of the world’s third largest barrier reefs and so the main attractions are scuba diving and snorkeling. It’s also surrounded by many other smaller, beautiful islands, so a boat tour is highly recommended.
  • Johnny Cay: Take a group ferry or charter a boat to Johnny Cay, a lovely beach on a nearby island and a 15 minute boat ride from San Andres town. The island is popular for diving and snorkeling and you’ll find one restaurant there as well.
  • Cartagena: Cartagena has a culturally rich history and is the closest city on mainland Colombia from San Andrés. The 500 year old walled city, Ciudad Amurallada, is a UNESCO World Heritage Sit, with some of the best preserved Spanish colonial buildings from that era, including the cathedral, plazas and the Palace of the Inquisition. The best accommodations in this neighborhood are renovated monasteries.

A Quick Guide to San Andres

  • Playa Splatt Bight: If you’re looking for a public, main beach in San Andrés with relatively clean white sand and clear turquoise waters, Playa Splatt Bight is where to go. It’s known as “The Sea of Seven Colors” because of the varying depths of water creating different blues. There is also a boardwalk lined with palm trees, shops, bars, and restaurants, with the beach facing Johnny Cay.
  • Eco Parque West View: Find your way to the swimming cove that is Eco Parque West View, equipped with a diving board on the cliff and a ladder to climb back out. With your entrance fee, you will receive bread to feed the fish, and there are also lockers for your belongings. It’s a popular spot to snorkel with many fish and there is also a small bar on-site for some added fun.
  • Playa de San Luis: A mile across the island from Eco Parque West View is Playa de San Luis. Clear water, white sand, and slightly off the beaten path — this beach is quieter and less populated, with the trade-off of less amenities. Accommodations are cheaper and dining options are more rustic.
