Location is probably the only good thing about this place, But honestly most hostel/hotels are good location in Santa Elena, so just pay a few more dollars and get something Way bettter
So we arrived at 13.00 and online it says check-in is 13.00, But apparently they have changed it to 14.00. Normally this is fine, but we were the only two guests in the entire place and every room was cleaned and ready. He even let us put our bags in our room, but could not “check in”.
The entire family stayed in the “common area” (It’s just a couch) and where cooking and having a little gathering, so we felt super unwelcomed and like we were intruding. His friend and him were also just sitting in the kitchen, watching videos on the phone, so we also felt weird for making food there.
As other people says there’s a lot of rules, which didn’t bother us, but were overall weird.
We had also booked breakfast which we were told only was for the first morning?? Anywho. The morning came and while he the night before said pancakes, we got 2 slices of untoasted bread each, half a banana and half and apple. We also got a cup of coffeee but there was dried dishwashing soap in my cup, so I did absolutely not touch it. There were also bugs on our toast after 1 minute of staying on the table, so we simply just left and got breakfast somewhere else.
The guy was living at the hostel, so we shared bathroom with him. There was no soap to be seen, and on the second day he had been shaving, cus there was beard-hair all over the sink, and in the toilet. We were so disgusted by the bathroom that we didn’t even shower.
It was such a bad experience, and we usually travel very cheaply, but nothing compare to this place.
I don’t know if you can see the photos, but I have tried to attach the soap in the cup + the breakfast

Quiet place, close to the town and they help you with reservations for activities, totally incredible, simple breakfast but with the option of free coffee and tea always

balcony was nice, free breakfast on first night is good.
summary: cockroaches, no hot running water, uncomfortable pillows, noisy street, thin curtains block no light, even from street lamps, no cooking facilities, rudest staff I’ve ever dealt with, speak no English, towels are $3.
continuation:
The staff were very rude. the showers in the dorm were freezing, and it gets cold here at night, so other dorm people said to use the big shower as it’s at least lukewarm.
the employee told me that using that shower wasn’t ok as it was for private room owners (fair enough, but I was never told this, the bathroom isn’t connected to a room, it’s only a shower, the alternative was freezing, and no one was in the privates anyway).
because I sat on another bed to my own to sort my bag, the worker said I had used 2 beds and ‘abused’ them; which I believe was a faint attempt to get me to pay double.
eventually I thought it best I leave for somewhere else, so I asked for my 5k deposit back for the key and apologised for disrespecting the property in her eyes. she refused, saying I checked out late. I did, but listen, the reason was because l said I was staying another night, but after being basically told off by staff for breaking rules I didn’t even know existed, I wanted to leave. the check out time on the board above reception said the wrong time also, which made it confusing (we argued on whether it said 9 or 10 for some time).
I’ve stayed in some bad places but this really takes the cake.

Vivian is the best! the hostel is in a great location, it’s spotlessly clean and comfortable. Vivian makes a great breakfast and even washed my bag and took over my cooking when she saw it wasn’t going well! there are also lots of tours you can book via Vivian. I would recommend everyone to stay here:)

It was clean and Natalie was very friendly and chatty!
There are a lot of unusual rules and a strange attitude towards the guests. You can’t stay more than 2 nights which meant I had to change hostels and waste a morning. The breakfast is only included on your first morning, it’s $4 on the second (although they did give me breakfast both mornings after I politely pointed out it’s a little deceptive). They ran out of toilet paper overnight and when asked if they could top it up, said a guest must’ve stolen it. They don’t like you to stay in the hostel during the day because you will use the electricity and water. The shower is FREEZING.

Location close to shops and restaurants.
First room offered was upstairs but neither of us could stand up in it. Second room was a double bunk bed but due to the position under the light it was very dark. Key to front door didn't work and it was deadlocked but luckily we only found out on the last day. Breakfast available for less than an hour in the morning. Check out by 9am in the morning. Thin walls between rooms, noisy road. Towels not provided but could be rented from reception. kitchen only had an electric pan available. Wish we had seen the rooms before paying as we would have gone elsewhere.

The ladies that work there are actually very nice when you get to know them a bit.
It's a quiet place, not a partyhostel, and I felt like the travellers were considerate
Breakfast is not included, but they give it more as a gift, and it was very tasty! a pancake with fresh fruits and coffee
They care a lot about keeping the place clean
Just come to check in after 1 pm, know that before that time you cannot leave your luggage, or use the spaces or bathroom

Nice bed
I had a booking, arrived early, but i was not allowed to stay in the lobby until check in time, and this with heavy rain. They try to charge you their booking commision, if you dont wanna pay they do a "now show" . Breakfast was until 08:20. I orderd my breakfast at 08:10, and i got told that im to late. They tell me i should happy if i get some fruit and a coffee. There just the money counts.

breakfast was pretty, I could be a little earlier so if someone takes a bus at 7:30 or go to the park with morning bus could use it
host charge you booking.com fee (so the amount you decided to book, tax (standard for Costa Rica) and booking fee) or propose to cancel reservation to save on the government tax. this is illegal both in front of customer, booking.com and country tax office - it is already reported to booking.com and tax agency. Caught red handed they they to explain that this is government tax. but it is both and this is a problem. tax is charged everywhere and booking fee is the owner duty to pay. so don’t fall in the trap.
if you start to ask to many questions you could be asked to leave property and they threaten with cancellation of your reservation. This is a problem because in the small town with very limited public busses there and not many last minute options and wether in afternoon is usually bad (heavy rains). I knew that I was being cheated but becomes of limited options I decided to ease situation and pay all - unfortunately.
in property they charge:
4$ - hot shower
3$ - towel.
if you want to pay in colons they will count 600 colons to 1 usd. if you want to pay deposit 1 usd is 500 colons (at that time bank rate was 550). so 10% for using national currency - nice!
there are so many rules in the property:
- no shower alert 9:00 PM - yes water is cut off
- no kitchen or bathroom or any common areas between 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM,
- forget to leave your backpack if you have afternoon bus
- cards with information everywhere what not to do, how to behave
- host siting and watching your every step in common area
the worst stay ever!

Its in the center and has good options for tours and information. The beds were clean. Its possible to see birds in front of the room.
For 2 nights in this hostel I experienced a lot of inconveniences.
My fresh food got thrown away with the explenation because it was open (which most of it was not) and I didnt get the whole refund which I expected.
You need to pay extra for a hot shower.
If you stay in the lower area you can‘t enter the kitchen area between 9 pm and 7.30 am, which is really annoying when you want to leave early in the day and can‘t eat something before/get your food.
It‘s not the worst hostel I‘ve stayed in but there is a lot to improve on. In my 4 months of travelling this was the most complicated hostel I‘ve stayed in.

One of the cheapest places in Monteverde
The room was extremely small and we could hear passing motorcycles like they were next to our heads all the time. Due to some situation with the staff we did not get neither a breakfast, nor a reimbruisement one of the mornings

The worst experience I’ve even encountered. Staff is so rude.
*PLEASE READ GOOGLE COMMENTS BEFORE BOOKING*
During our check in the elder woman working there had a lot of attitude and was openly discriminating against my Costa Rican partner saying “we don’t host Ticos” that made us eventually to leave and we had to find another accommodation.
Apparently this is common problem with them, hearing from people in our new accommodation and people in the city.

Really friendly staff! The young girl gave us a lot of good advices for activities to do in the area :) The location was also great, with agora walking distance to restaurants, supermarkets, atm etc.
The room was clean.
There were some strange rules that you can not use the bathrooms on the hostel between 9.30 am and 2 pm. It really did not bother us, since we were out doing activities during that time - but can be good to know.

Location was okay
Receptionist is extremely strict and condescending. Had a plaque that says something like, "keep your negative emotions and out of here," so that if you complain about any of the aweful rules, her attitude, etc, she can just dismiss it.
Reception rips you off using 1 dollar to 600 colones when taking deposit and then 1 dollar to 500 colone when paying back.
No one at the hostel had even been given a chance to try the 'free' breakfast because we all start the adventures early or take a bus early and the hostel won't bother making anything for you the day before or get up early for you.
She showed up late to take my key and give back my deposit and looked at me angrily when i mentioned that i was going to miss my bus while she was too busy doing nothing.
Pillows all had smears and stains. Mine had what looked like crusted boogers.
Not allowed to do laundry by hand.
Her dirty cat kept breaking into our dorm room (the door won't lock or even close) and the cat would jump on everyone's bed and bite and scratch if you tried to move it.
4$ just for a quick hot shower. So many strict rules, too many to list. Don't bother.

Location was close to everything in Santa Elena. Staff were especially nice and helpful. If there were any problems, they'd immediately come to help. If you wanted honest information, they gave you real recommendations, not the standard tourist-pitch.
They're overly fond of putting up hand-written posters with instructions that are not clear before hand, such as not being allowed into your room from 9.30 AM until 1 PM.

Nice staff, good advices and informations
It was the worst hostel we did in Costa Rica. The kitchen is very poorly equipped: no gas! Just an electric frying pan for everybody so it's very long and at 8:30 pm the kitchen closes and it's not possible to cook anymore so you have to start cooking at 6 pm if you want to have a chance to cook. Kitchen closed also between 10 am and 1 pm. Impossible to stay more than 2 nights. The breakfast was prepared at the window of our room from 7 am so not possible to sleep if you are tired. We were not able to recover the deposit of the keys, because nobody at the reception when we had to take the bus. Etc... very nice staff and good advice btw

I liked the downstairs area as there is a little balcony that overlooks plants and wildlife, the breakfast was good too. The lady at the front desk is very nice and friendly, she helps you book tours and buses to the local attractions and was generally very helpful.
I didn’t like one member of staff, she was unnecessarily rude to me. I was blamed for something I didn’t do by this staff member and she wasn’t friendly. Also there wasn’t enough toilet paper supplied in my room. On top of this I felt like there were a few too many rules, I wasn’t completely relaxed at this hostel.

We enjoyed our stay here ...the receptionist is very nice and welcoming, she help us a lot and was friendly. It s a small place, it does feel like being at home, where people stop by, have a chat, exchange experiences. The place itself is simple but has everything.. our room and the bathrooms were very clean. The kitchen doesn't have much, but is equipped enough to cook, was very clean and tidy too. Shower was nicely warm! We will come back.
We didn't manage to catch breakfast, apparently that s nice too!
Maybe a little noisy being next to the road.. also it was very windy outside and the windows are not exactly airtight.. but money/value It s probably one of the best in town!

Ran by great, hospitable, and helpful people. The homemade breakfast was delicious. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. A few steps away from a supermarket and close to everything else.

They staff was very kind!
The breakfast consisting of vegan pancakes and fruits was delicious.
The hostel itself was cosy and had all that was needed
We could book tours via the hostel and the staff helped us with busses to continue travels to San José / Puntarenas.
We had to leave the common room at 9 pm which was a bit early but actually good for those already in bed. Might be a good compromise so everyone can have a calm night.

Good 3 nights stay. Nathali and the owner were really nice and caring on my needs.
Kitchen equipped for easy making meals.
Pictures aren't really updated but rooms were very similar.
Valentino (the cat) will gladly join you for a sunbath in the downstairs garden. Doesn't mean he wants to be petted that much. (so I heard)
/!\ Card not accepted, just so you know.

Nothing
The clerk robbed me, first off charged me 7,000 colones extra an when I called her on it. She said that her calculator makes mistakes? However she wouldn't look me in the eye. And immediately gave back 5,000 colones. But used a very high exchange rate to explain the other 2,000. The room was freezing and only a sheet was given no blankets. The window in the dorm doesn't seal so it howled in the wind all night. Really bad vibes from the clerk, breakfast was kinda ok half a banana and a pancake vs my friends hostel which had scrambled eggs with tomatoes, fruit, pancakes ext... Save the hassle go somewhere else! This is the first negative review I have left. Normally if I'm not overly satisfied I just don't review.

Location is great, walking distance to town, good wifi, comfortable bed and good kitchen facilities. Included breakfast was nice and substantial.
There seemed to be an expectation to speak Spanish and came off as us being a bit unwelcome initially but another staff member was very nice and hospitable (makes a great brekky and homemade guava marmalade!!!)

Good price and breakfast, close to the town.
The owner tried to make us give up on our plans saying we didn’t choose well, to sell us their tours, she kept saying inappropriate things about other guests. The day I left I went to the reception on time to checkout and there was no one there, so I was organizing my food while waiting for the receptionist, the owner came to say I was late to checkout, she also reproached me for not taking the tours with her and doing it by myself, she said this is why hosts use to refuse Costa Rican guests which is not true, and to make it all worst, she said I had to pay for the microwave oven since I was the last one using it and it stopped working (I used in front of her a day before to warm up my tea and she was the one telling me to use it btw). She said I had to pay for the microwave, for a night and that she wasn’t giving me back the warranty I paid for the keys, that btw never worked, she even tried to retain me by stepping on the door. When I finally made it for get out, I gave her back the keys (ofc I didn’t get my money back) and I left while she was screaming on my back. The worst experience I’ve ever had, I didn’t want to post this tho but the checkout experience made me do it.
