Review of “South of Broad” House, Charleston
We are a retired couple traveling from Florida to upstate NY after a month in Florida. Our stay was short, but very pleasant, in this historic house. Judy and Philip provided all the necessary items for a stress-free stay and went out of their way to be accommodating. The house was set in a perfect location “south of Broad” e.g., in the most desirable and historic part of Charleston’s French Quarter, near all the houses and sites most people visiting Charleston come to see. The parking was secure and off-street, and the house itself was set back behind the street and the main house, and so was quite quiet. We enjoyed a cocktail on the small seclude cobblestone courtyard next to the house, and you can too!

We loved the location and the history. Great courtyard to enjoy the bottle of wine left for us by the host. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a wonderful stay at 86 Church St.The location is ideal, easy walking everywhere and plenty of restaurants on Broad St. The beds were clean and comfortable. The bathrooms were new and clean. The cottage is comfortable and loaded with charm but it needs a deep clean and the kitchen needs updating.

The owners/managers are on site and very welcoming and helpful. The location is great for spending time in historic Charleston and being able to walk and/or take the free bus. There is also space to park a vehicle in case you are driving.

Location was spectacular, able to walk to most everything we wanted to do in Charleston. This property could use a refresh, particularly where furniture is concerned, twin beds, living room and lighting in particular.

It was our kids’ (7&9) first trip to Charleston and this property provided the perfect place to give them the full experience. It was very convenient to walk to all the historical sites, market and restaurants we wanted to visit and the home itself is a real piece of history. The hosts are terrific and really went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay.

Kitchen could use some updating. Very comfortable and enjoyed experiencing the history.

We loved staying here. A delightful detached period cottage in the heart of historic Charleston. Beautifully furnished, well equipped, and we liked the fact that there was separate air conditioning for each floor. The owners had kindly left milk, cookies and wine to welcome us. Also the ability to park a car was invaluable. The second bathroom is downstairs off the kitchen, but this wasn't a problem for us, in fact it worked well. Comfortable lounge and comfortable beds.
Met up with the owners briefly, mainly due to our late arrival. They were charming. and communication was very good.
A perfect location for exploring Charleston. Look no further!!

Hosts were gracious and welcoming and provided great recommendations based on the type of group we had. All the little extras were taken care of and we could not have enjoyed our stay more!

The title says it all! We loved everything about the home and the warm, lovely hosts. The location couldn't be better. Thank you for helping us have such a special week end! Booking was easy and communication helpful.
Side note- the main floor half bath now has a shower rather than laundry. We can't recommend this home enough! Thank you again!

The carriage house had two bedrooms upstairs, with very comfortable beds, and an updated bathroom. The stairs were steep and uneven but my mother, who has difficulty with steps, was able to manage just fine.
The downstairs bathroom was also updated recently. We had four women staying together, and there was plenty of hot water for everyone.
The location was great and we were able to walk or catch the Carta bus to many of the places we wanted to see as we did not rent a car.
The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed chatting with them.
All in all, it was a lovely place to stay which enhanced the ambience of our first trip to Charleston.

The perfect location for a retreat to Charleston. We were able to walk to everything in the heart of the historical district. Accommodations were very comfortable, classy, and quiet.

This kitchen house on Church gives you an understanding of the formerly walled center of Charleston. You can walk everywhere—to the harbor for a boat tour, to city hall for the fabulous two sisters walking tour, to more wonderful restaurants than you could ever dine at— and then come “home” for a cool quiet drink in the garden.

We so enjoyed our stay in this historic building. Our hosts were friendly and inviting!

Staying in this home is like stepping back into the history of Charleston. It is in the middle of the historic district surrounded by elegant homes, and has a private patio away from the street as well as parking. The owners live in a home right in front of this one; they greet you in person upon arrival and communicating with them is as easy as knocking on their door. They had wine, milk, muffins, and coffee in the home upon arrival.
A few specific notes to keep in mind. The listing--at least when we booked the property--states that there is a washer/dryer and 1.5 bathrooms, and the photo of the bathroom shows a tub. It seems like perhaps there have been some renovations and the listing needs updating. There is no washer/dryer and there are now two full baths, both with only showers.
As others have stated, the wifi can be spotty in the home. We found that the living room was the most reliable for wifi and that we needed to limit users to 1-2 at a time.

What a beautiful historic home to stay in! Quiet, peaceful and within walking distance of everything. While the others slept in the mornings , I enjoyed the gas fireplace with hot tea. Although the home has lots of historic features, the bathrooms are new. The beds were all very comfortable and I can only imagine how beautiful the courtyard is to enjoy in the Charleston Spring and Summers! The wooden stairs were a bit awkward to navigate with luggage, but we had a wonderful visit!! Parking is provided which is a plus! Would very much stay again!

Beautiful property right in the heart of Charleston. Close to all the wedding events that we were attending.

I highly recommend this property. The location is perfect for walking to museums, historic homes, restaurants, and King Street shopping. The historicity of the VRBO really helped your “sense of place” and enhanced the Charleston trip in every way. The outdoor patio and indoor seating were perfect for our “friend trip” and the kitchen was well stocked. Excellent hosts!

We had a great time! Easy walking distance to most of the restaurants, historic buildings, etc. George Washington stayed across the street in 1791! Our guided walking tour of the city included this block. Wonderful hosts. The Middletons were very responsive to our needs and requests.

Overall great experience
Definitely a great location - max 15-20 minutes walking distance from all restaurants/sights we chose to visit - and a lot of history clearly evident in the cottage. Parking was convenient - a driveway was provided and if other guests were also in the single lane driveway and needed to get out, the owner would move the guest's cars for them. However, it did feel that the endeavor to preserve the historical nature of the cottage has resulted in it some areas for improvement: some of the cottage appeared to be in need of repair, one of the bathroom outlets did not work, and we did see one cockroach upstairs during our stay, which was unexpected.

Charming, clean and close to town, shops and restaurants
We had a wonderful stay! Loved the history and charming house. It was so nice to be greeted by the owners and given a tour of the house. It was a unique experience for our family to not be in a modern hotel or house and feel the vintage vibes.
