Great place to stay. Would recommend anyone to stay here amongst the locals.

The house is beautiful but there is a house being built next to it on the property with all the attending noise and bad smells. The neighborhood is also quite noisy. The house was not very well supplied. The owner is on site and very friendly.
Maui is magical no matter what, and we all had a great time.

Perfect spot on the island to get around. The owner was very attentive and kind. Highly recommend.

Great property. Walking distance to historic Makawao. Beautiful view of the mountains and bay from the deck and dining area, great sunsets. Full kitchen. Laundry access is a plus! Comfy beds. Overall it was nice staying in a neighborhood. Only downside is the noise of the neighborhood: rosters crowing a lot of the night, dogs barking, etc. So just bring ear plugs.

Thank-you Mark for making our stay so enjoyable. Your offer of a late check-out when our flight was delayed was so generous. We will stay again!

It was a fantastic stay here in Makawa. My friends and I are here celebrating a big birthday and home was just perfect for us. The views are incredible. The weather in Makawao is so cool. In the evenings you just never need an air conditioning.
We met Mark the owner, who was super nice and accommodating. I will come back here with my family again if it’s available.

Peaceful mountain views
was a great place to come back and relax after our day of adventuring. Was centrally located to do all the things we wanted to do. The dinner table was spacious and we played board games there every night with the games we brought.

Highly Recommended
The house was fantastic with glorious views and located in a quiet area. Its proximity to the heart of Makawao was an added bonus. The host was very professional, friendly, and very responsive to inquiries. The only constructive criticism I can offer is that the floors in the house should have been cleaned a bit better, especially for a property at this price point. Upon check-in, there was a bit of beach sand on the floors in the bathroom, kitchen, and sitting area. We quickly cleaned that up upon arrival, and otherwise, everything was wonderful. The host outsources the cleaning crews, so this certainly is not a reflection on him. He promotes this property so professionally and wants to provide a top-notch experience for his guests, I just feel that perhaps the cleaning service being used is not living up to his expectations. Overall, it was a fabulous experience, and we will definitely consider rebooking for a future visit to Maui!

Wonderful end to vacation
Mark was a wonderful host and very responsive. It was centrally located for all we wanted to see., clean and plenty of room. Lots of extras such as beach chairs, etc.
We wished there was a grill but the listing clearly stated there was not, we just missed it but was able to improvised.
Highly recommend this property.

Pookela Paradise 1
Views, location and layout are fabulous. Great TV. Terrific cat. Mark, the owner is a delight. But there are some issues that must be noted and resolved. In all, the property's condition and upkeep are overstated in the ad. Here are the basics.
One working smoke detector in the two-story structure. Three in a drawer, inoperable. One battery in that drawer that expired 8-2020. The other two detectors are dangling from the ceilings without batteries. First night I tried to make dinner and eb=very pot or pan I grabbed was greasy coming out of the drawers. Same with utensils. Someone needs to pay a lot better attention to details or drop the price by 50%. The cookware is clearly very old and unmatched, often with lids missing and/or Teflon peeling off the pots. Also, the ad should indicate that this is NOT a stand alone house. It's the upper story of a two level duplex and the owner lives below.
Bottom line - either put some time and money back into this place to make it what the ad claims it is or change the ad to factually reflect what the renter is getting. Good experience with notable dissappointments in the property itself.

Not able to stay but still had to pay
Upon arrival the cleanliness of the house was so bad my 12-year-old son frantically started looking for cleaning supplies to wipe the stickiness off the counters and recommended we needed to wash all the dishes because there was food residue on them. My older son who is highly allergic to cats, started having a panic attack as his throat started closing. When I spoke to management of the property they indicated the person who had stayed there before had been there for 40 days and likely let the cat into the house. There was no way we were able to stay at this location. So the first day of our vacation I spent trying to find a hotel for us to stay in. Mark, the property manager, did pay for a cleaning the next day but my kids were terrified to come back to this property. In addition, many of the drawers where you would consider putting clothes in the bedroom were filled with CDs and junk making them not able to be used. One room had no place to put any clothes at all. After a long day of travel not the situation you want to walk into. We still paid for the entire week as neither VRBO nor the property manager offered even a discount for our inconvenience.

Enjoyed our stay!
This is a quiet, charming place. The weather here is quite chill compare to the west-south side of the island, great for family members who would like to stay away from the heat and noisy crowd. We saw rainbows every day! Mark is also a fantastic host, he kindly offered that we can stay as long as we have to on the checkout day. And here do have some nice food around. Would definitely book again next time come to Maui!

Makawao at its finest
Upcountry view that residents dream of. Walk to town real easy and in a very quiet neighborhood. The local cat is great of keeping the roosters at a perfect distance. :) Definitely planning on staying here again on our next visit.

Mark was a great host. We called the unit the "tree house" as it had great views. Wonderful week.

"Paradise" name is spot on
Our first trip to Maui, so I had no idea how beautiful the Makawao area would be -- nice coolish temps, away from the tourist craziness, and easy access to Mr. Haleakala and both directions around Hana Highway. Pookela Paradise is the perfect place to stay in Makawao -- spacious, light-filled, 2nd floor unit, with windows everywhere to maximize the exquisite views. The kitchen is beautifully equipped, all bedding and furnishings are comfortable and up to date, and the greatest treasure is the front deck, where we ate breakfast and had sunset cocktails overlooking ocean and west Maui mountain. We could not have been happier with our stay.

First visit to Makawao
We arrived after dark and did not know which door to go in, as none of them had a number. We finally found our room after going up a very dark stair case! I suggest room numbers on the doors and please leave the deck light on.
We had problems with one of the TV's and Mark said he would drop by but he didn't.
The place was great and we really enjoyed our stay. It looks like I inadvertently packed your Maui guide book. Please give me a mailing address and I will return it to you.
We will probably be back some day.
Thanks,
Jake & Shan

Dated but Cozy and Central to everything
The house in general was well located - central to everything. It was spacious, had beautiful views and equipped with everything one would need. We rated it 3-star only because it needed a good cleaning, there was no mention of additional units on the first floor with this unit up on the second floor and in general our good neighbors were loud at times.
The furniture was well worn and some items need replacing - ice maker not working, microwave missing the glass turn table and cushions could use some minor stitching repair and cleaning.
Further, our neighbors though very friendly, we’re pretty loud. From the immediate apartment below, the house on the same property and from across the road!
Regardless, we did enjoy our stay as it was near everything we planned to do.

Great place to stay in Makawao
This is a great rental. It has beautiful views and cool mountain air keeps this place nice and comfortable in the evening. The yard is large and the shrubs fill the air with amazing scents. Mark is a great host and was very accommodating to our needs. I would definitely recommend this place if you’re looking to stay in the area.

Gorgeous home, and the view??!! To die for!!!
Our only complaint about Pookela Paradise 2, was that our trip was too short! As former Upcountry Maui residents, this truly felt like "coming home." The house is absolutely beautiful there are stunning views in every direction! The owner, Mark, is truly filled with Aloha, and treated us like Ohana (family) We will DEFINITELY be back!! Mahalo Mark!! -The Londin Family

The way to stay in Maui
We could not be more pleased with this home! The location is so perfect for enjoying the whole island. It was so nice to go adventuring and come back to the cool weather in upcountry at the end of the day. You are away from the hustle & bustle of the resorts and can really experience the local lifestyle here. Whenever we told someone we were staying in Makawao they would be surprised and say “Wow! You guys must know what you’re doing, that’s the way to visit Maui”. They are right! This was our 2nd time to the island and are more in love with it now than we ever were! Mark is a great host and he really does have a slice of paradise here. Highly recommend (except when we want to come back) to anyone looking for an amazing time in Maui. This is the place.
