On the positive side the hotel is located directly on the beach (Playa de Muro). Also, the lifeguard at the pool was friendly as was another staff member who helped to get a towel when there were none available at the pool or the reception desk (this shouldn’t happen but she did do her best and finally got a towel).
Rarely do I write reviews and if so, positive ones.
But at Iberostar Selection Playa de Muro the experience was truly a bad one that I would like to share.
Branded as 5 stars and advertised as one of Iberostar's best properties on the island of Mallorca with a price tag to match, you can expect a certain standard from the hotel.
But this standard simply is never met, the facilities are lacking and service quality is poor.
On check-in the room key (a wristband) couldn't be programmed due to a computer error. You had to ask someone to open the door of your room. This can happen.
But what should never happen is that when you are supposed to check out at 11.00 (early for such a property) the front desk calls you at 11.10 to tell you if you don't show up before 12.00 for check-out you will be charged a fine of 45 euros (mind you, not a late check-out fee but a fine). Such a policy and treatment of a customer is unacceptable.
Then there are details that greatly subtract from what is supposed to be a luxury experience.
There is an indoor pool which doesn't have enough loungers or chairs. You are advised to put your towel on the floor.
The room isn't cleaned properly, furniture is scoffed, the sofa is stained badly. This is true for other parts of the hotel as well.
Isolation of the room is bad, you hear every step in the hallway.
Breakfast (while of good quality and at a nice beachfront location) is only served until 10.30.
You are given a towel card to exchange for a towel on check-in which is ridiculous given the supposed standard of the hotel and the price tag. For check-out you carry a used towel to the reception desk.
On logging in to the Internet they try to upsell you a faster connection. The faster connection should come as standard.
The view of the standard suite is against the wall of the gym and indoor pool area.
After check-out the staff at the reception desk did little to try to find an item that had presumably been lost...

Everything needed was catered for.
Clean and fresh generally. Even the paving around the village was cleaned daily.
A good selection of seating areas.
Good selection of places to eat.
Great variety of food each day and all freshly prepared.
Staff were super efficient and helpful.
Both pools were maintained to a high standard.
A minor niggle: No shower cap in the bathroom.
Major drawback: Mosquitoes! Being next to protected conservation marshland, the mosquitoes became a real issue. Kids and adults were smothered in bites. For eg: 4-6 bites along the edge of grandson’s ear. It seemed that everyone I saw had upwards of dozens of bites. There seemed no safe place to get away from them. Sprays and repellents didn’t seem to work.

The breakfast was good. The beach is lovely. The best bit about the hotel stay was that there was no mad rush for sun-beds around the pool, which was refreshing.
The swimming pool is very deep (1.6m) which is not safe for children who are not confident swimmers, it meant we couldn’t relax. When I brought this up with the hotel, they suggested we use the pool in the 4* sister hotel next door.
The air conditioning was not affective, the room was very warm. I appreciate for sustainability you stop using miniature body and hair care, however in this case you need to ensure the large sized bottles are full. We ran out of conditioner, which was a problem.
If you chose not to be an all inclusive guest then you are very limited should you chose to eat at the hotel, for example the restaurants are ‘all or nothing’, no A La Carte options. Other than the burger bar, but that is a fast food diner.
Finally, we were informed that the main pool/ beach restaurant can only be used by AI guests for breakfast, which seemed unfair.

I have all the praise for the employees, everyone is friendly, from the reception, to the cleaning staff to the staff in the restaurants. Breakfast and dinner are phenomenal and I really think it's impossible to find fault.
I don't like that the furniture in the rooms is quite old and the rooms are small.
The biggest complaints are about the beach, which is extremely small and modest, considering that it can't even accommodate 100 people for such a big hotel.
I think all the recommendations are for couples with small children because almost all the daytime and evening content is made exclusively for small children.
For older people as well as young couples, this hotel is not a good solution
all employees of the hotel are exceptional - kind, thoughtful and always friendly to help

The rooms were a great size. The children’s entertainment was very good.
If you book a family basic room be aware that you will be placed on the main road. This was not expected and the location although on the beach is also on a busy road.
There was also no al a carte restaurants within the hotel which was not expected from the description on the website. Buffet food was good but I would prefer the option as buffer is not very relaxing.
The main pool area was also always busy but there is another pool which we found which was much better.
Very limited lunch options in the hotel. Only a burger bar which was not great.

I liked the style of the buildings being 2 storeys and no lifts is always our preferred option. Close proximity to all the facilities. The room key is on a band around your wrist which at first I thought was going to be annoying but it was really great, and you don't need to look for your key each time you leave the room!
The hotel is located along the beach with amazing ambience and setting, one of the most disappoint aspects was the beachside bar for evening drinks, drinks in my option for a 5 star hotel could be presented better including a drinks mat and ice in soft drinks, at 30+ degrees you want something refreshing and that doest drip all over you.
Security, we didn't see anything to be concern about but the lack of security and easy access to the hotel should be addressed.

great location and generally family friendly, pools are great for kids.
Too many mosquitoes (I guess that is owed to the location), and much too noisy at night. Hard to pit young kids to bed if there are very loud shows until 10pm every evening!

The location was amazing right on the beach, the food was pretty good and staff were friendly
The bed in the room could have been better.

An direct access to the beach and see, room was spacious and well equipped. Very nice view from the restaurant at the beach. The sandy beach is great, perfect for kids.
There are few things. Firstly, it would be really useful to receive a sort of map of all hotel facilities at the check-in. Or it could be included in hotel’s app. It was simply not clear for example where the Kids Club, Gym or Gust restaurant are located. Secondly, it was really surprising to discover that the beach does not belong to the hotel and that you must pay for loungers (15 euro!!! per day). It should be communicated in advance. Not to mention they must be “reserved” very early in the morning, same at the pool. The stuff was friendly but not extremely helpful.
The pool is not heated so in the beginning of the season the water may be to cold, especially for kids.

The kids pool
The afternoon crepe station
Finding out you could eat the buffet in the restaurant by the beach
The hotel is no way a 5* resort. We were wrongly sold a room with ‘4single beds’ only to be told they don’t have that option so 2 people had to sleep on a sofa bed which was inadequate. The rooms are tiny and ill equipped. The wifi is terrible. We had ants in our room. Our balcony light was broken and never fixed despite our best efforts so had to sit in the dark every evening. I would struggle to call it a 4* resort tbh

great breakfast, great views , nice facilities pools, restaurants, quick access to Playa de Muro beach.
overall staff was friendly and welcoming everywhere.
I thought guest services or front desk knew about restaurants nearby but when I asked for recommendations Northwest ( Valdemossa, Soller) either they tried places which were already booked ( like Na Foradada which gets booked weeks in advance) , or they didnt know any restaurant. They knew more about Alcudia, Port of Alcudia and Pollensa but we wanted to explore the whole island. They tried to be helpful but ended up calling restaurants fully booked who didnt return the call. We were here in August, high season but still.
Also it wasn't clear to me that beach beds were extra on Playa del Muro, for 4 people it was 30Euros per days. considering we had 2 rooms, our stay was already pricey as it was.

Leaving.
I don't know why this hotel is rated 5 stars. Check in took forever. First you hand in documents then you have to fill in personal details yourself on a tablet. One of the rooms smelled so much of damp and sewage that I asked to be changed. The room was changed, no apology, no smiles. They made me feel like I was lying. Cute little note in the room offering complimentary coffee pods - no pods. Try to call the front desk to ask for some, the phone is broken. I walk to the front desk to tell them, and they tell me only the first 4 are included, then you have to pay. I said well I just told you there is no coffee and the phone is broken. No apology, no smile. The toilet is a nightmare. Yes it's in a separate room, but the door is open both underneath and above, so no privacy, and the door is a screen so if you turn on the light at night, the other wakes up. The shower was nice. Breakfast was average, the coffee really bad. You are handed a note for a beach/pool towel which you have to go get yourself somewhere by the pool. 5 star hotels usually have them in rooms and more available by the pool. Checked out 5 days ago and am still waiting for them to send the invoice.

Right on the sandy beach, food is great, lots of animation for kids and helpful reception.
Overall quality has dropped a lot since our last visit in 2017. Staff is not motivated and nice, service around the pools is really bad. Families with small children and babies are storming all over the place. Rooms are small and the the sofa bed in the family room is very very uncomfortable. And mosquitos are all over the place. If you visit Mallorca with bigger kids, go and rent a house.

Overall the property was excellent. There's not much else to say other than that.
Sound proofing between floors could be improved. I was on a ground floor and could constantly hear the person above walking around.

I had a long weekend as a solo traveller. Not the cheapest break but great view from my balcony. The buffet is to die for! Nip out onto the beach or chill in the spa. Very relaxing!
The taxes but can’t be helped. Need milk in the room for us brits and tea bags
