Know the hotel well, love the staff.

Only downside to the establishment is the very limited on site parking. Public pay and display car park very accessible but don't forget to renew your ticket the following morning.

Room on first floor as requested. Excellent shower. Good menu choices for breakfast and dinner.

Having grown up here and coming back to visit family I was amazed at the renovations and how smart the place is. I loved the decor in the room and the great approval to breakfast- choose what you want for a menu rather than paying over the odds for a massive buffet you don’t eat. Good quality food.

The heating was so high it felt like an old people’s home. I managed to turn the heating off in the bedroom but the bathroom was like the tropics. I led in bed in December with windows open. In an age where people are trying to conserve energy and save money, they need to turn the heat down. I would have said this to the team at check out but no one asked me how my stay was. There was no one at the desk and I handed my keys into a lady who seemed overworked in the bar/ kitchen and totally disinterested.

the decor

The staff were accomodating right from the start. Rooms were excellently furnished and comfortable. The breakfast was cooked to perfection and waiting staff couldn't do enough for you. On departing quick check out and called us a taxi.

There was nothing that I didn't like about the experience.

Check inn - very unfriendly, told wrong way to room, charged twice for stay, trying to chase hotel for explanation and refund of overpayment very difficult!! no one will take responsibility for the error!! spoke to 4 different staff all giving me different excuses but no resolvent! Still chasing my refund for overpayment 2 days later!!!!!! Not good at all. Actually spoke to the GM today (Weds pm) who tells me not to worry and the transaction has been canx - she guarantees that I will not be charged. They don't seem to grasp the fact that although I have paid the bill in full at time of checking in, they still have charged me another £90.00 it may be pending but its still money from my account that I cannot use, and won't properly get back till after the Christmas holidays! No apologies for this fact whatsoever... just treated with blatant contempt from the hotels GM. Terrible & unacceptable treatment towards their clients. Room very small, nicely decorated and comfortable bed/ pillows, good TV but the room was far to small to enjoy. Bathroom was the size of a broom cupboard, again nicely appointed fittings but so, so small!! No shelves to place toiletries on! large wall radiator but as the room was so small you kept touching and burning yourself so had to turn off. Windows did not open so room was stuffy with no fresh air. Breakfast was presented looking fab - unfortunately it looked better than it tasted - hash browns very mushy, sausage was horrible and inedible, eggs hard & bacon quite fatty. However breakfast staff & service very friendly - made a difference. Although at 8.00am I was the only one in the dining room - which is unusual for a hotel that I was told was fully booked. Hotel looks and advertises everything very well, but the reality is that it just fails to live up to expectations.

The hotel had such a lovely atmosphere. Rooms were first class and the meal we had on arrival was superb and excellent value for money. We cannot wait to return.

Parking could have been easier, but understand that is located centrally and therefore limited parking.

The refurbishment is to an excellent standard, great location, friendly staff and beautiful room!

I chose this hotel because of its historic connections with Peter the Great and because I had dined there successfully many years ago. I knew I would have sumptuous accommodation and delicious food, and I was absolutely right! The Victoria and Albert suite was spacious and luxurious without being over-priced. My roast chicken lunch on the Sunday was delicious and I retired to the Czar Lounge for a drink afterwards in beautiful surroundings. The hotel is well-sited on the high street for all of Godalming's amenities such as shops, pubs, church and park.

The gravy was a little thin and tasteless, which I reported to the serving staff and they promised to mention it to the chef, but the rest of the meal was so good, ultimately I did not mind too much. The people on the next-door table at lunch were a little over-enthusiastic in celebrating a birthday, but this was hardly the hotel's fault and it was easy for me to move to the lounge with my drink.
