A one-of-a-kind Ryokan with kind owners and in a great location. Lots of wonderful restaurants nearby. Bus stop for Nagano Station is near the entrance. Hangout in the lobby or sit on the sidewalk bench in front of the building to experience the culture of the Zenkoji pilgrams and Nagano's city life.
All meet my expectation and I'm very glad we had the opportunity to stay here. Consider this property is a 100+ year old building and your room is not on the ground floor, expect stairs. If you need an elevator or prefer modern hotel rooms, there are plenty of options near Nagano station.

Lovely old ryokan, right on the main street to Zenkoji...couldn't ask for anything more for a quintessential Japanese experience. Sweetest old Japanese couple who run the place, who speak no (god-forsaken) English and were there at every turn to make sure we were being looked after, tiny stairs going all over the place, ofuro/spa of perfect size and temperature...we were even greeted in the morning by a festival procession and dragon, right outside the window!! Surreal. Bringing tears to my eyes...
Nothing. Nothing sucks. Beyond that, if you want a high-dollar, all-inclusive, full-luxury experience, where you get to shit in your own room...go somewhere else ;-)

This is the best imaginable place to stay in Nagano. Perfectly located between the train station and the famous Zenkoji. Japanese style rooms in a authentic hotel, with a common hot bath. Travelling as a family with a 1-year-old, we were very happy that the charming owners gave us one of the baths for family use. Next time we will eat dinner there, too!

Very traditional kind of stay. The couple that runs this place is super lovely, they always greeted us at the entrance and as we were leaving. It's super close to the temple and on the prettiest street of Nagano. The room is very spacious and you get fresh green tea in a clay pot every day. Futon beds were surprisingly comfortable.
Our room faced the street and it was a bit loud and bright. Probably Japanese houses have thin walls. The onsen didn't make the cleanest expression. The owners don't speak much English so prepare a translator if you have questions.

Very nice old Ryokan, very traditional.
The couple who earned this place are so kind and so helpful, even if they don't speak English.

The family's owned bussiness were very friendly and helpful best they could locations right next to the temple and the rooms felt very authentic
Sleeping on the floor isn't for everyone.
We lacked japanese so we struggled with communication a little the building is a real mismatch doesn't feel tok quint instead it's fairly industrial for a ryokan with extensions of the years but I think this is still correct on what a ryokan is the onsens are filtered

The interior and atmosphere is very nostalgic and relaxing, and the Ryokan's owners, an elderly couple, are very friendly. They are always there to welcome me when I come back and see me off when I leave, which it's very heart warming. They are also happy to chat with me and share the stories of the Ryokan.
I have only tried the breakfast at the Ryokan. The breakfast is delicious and served with local pickled vegetables.
The location is excellent, sitting on the main street before Zenkoji Temple alongside with many traditional & beautiful shops, cafes & restaurants.
Although I love the architecture and interior of the Ryokan, it is not quite convenient to the travelers who are carrying heavy luggage as there is no elevator and the stairs are quite steep.

The proprietors were extremely helpful and kind! They allowed us a late check-in and even waited until we had returned from dinner to ask if they could close the bath. We were also provided with robes, a hot water kettle, tea, and some snacks in the room, so we felt very welcome. Additionally, although the room did not have a private bathroom, it had a sink and a mirror, which suited our needs perfectly.
Although this was not an issue for us, please be aware that the steps to the next levels might be steep for some people.

Noisy roadside. Lobby area stifling hot.

This is one of the best places I have ever stayed in. The service provided by the owners way above and beyond; the aesthetic design of my room, gorgeous. The onsen and the breakfast, fabulous. They carried my big case up and down the stairs and were so very helpful and kind. It's a 500m walk from Zenkō-ji temple so the perfect place to stay for the early morning service.

We had a wonderful stay Shimizuya Ryokan. The couple are so, so kind and thoughtful, and we loved the traditional style building. It is close to Zenkoji Temple and many cute restaurants and shops. We hope to return one day soon!

We did our research before booking this property. We knew it would be a traditional place; exactly what we were looking for.
The ryokan is run by a lovely couple who make you feel like family. We felt well cared for. We ordered breakfast and dinner and let them know of our special meal request ahead of time-no meat. The food they prepared was delicious and the right amount. Also, very Japanese-pickled vegetables, small bowls of different salads to try, green tea, miso soup, sashimi, fried fish. See photo for the “spread”
There is a shared toilet and you shower in the area containing the onsen (hot bath).
This is not a hotel- it is traditional- the stairs are steep and creaky-the walls are thin-the building is old and drafty- this is what we wanted.
With realistic expectations, you will have a 5 star experience!! Highly recommended for those with an adventurous spirit.

Everything was so nice. An old couple that met us. The personnel. The house which is about 150 years old, the room with perfect traditional design . Tokonoma with an old painting. The old traditional tea cups. We experienced wearing traditional home dress as well. The location close to the Zencoji temple where we attended a colourful festival was very fitting. We liked the hot onsen in the evening and breakfast in the morning. This is a greatest place for the amateurs of traditional japanese culture.
