Our stay was very peaceful and quiet. The kids enjoyed paddle boats, kayaks and jumping off the floating dock, They also enjoyed feeding the swans that live on the lake.
We had a great time in game room playing pool, ping pong, foosball and darts. If you want off the grind vacation this is the place to go..

My family just spent a week at Polar Lake Lodge and it was one of the best vacations that we have been on! We wanted to spend some quality time together and let the kids experience some time away from their electronics and the lodge was perfect. I booked the lodge through VRBO, and within 15 minutes of booking, I received a call from Charlie, the owner. He introduced himself and we chatted about the property and what I was looking for in a vacation. Charlie was waiting for us when we arrived and thoroughly explained everything before leaving us to explore for ourselves. The weather was not the greatest throughout the week, but we enjoyed both inside and outside activities. Mt 4-year-old granddaughter was in charge of feeding the swans and she caught a fish her very first time trying! My son-in-law hooked a musky that got away after a long struggle and he had a very large pike that slipped through his net. My family enjoyed using the kayaks, paddle boards and boats. On the 4th of July we went to Gladstone and experienced a small-town parade and festival which was very enjoyable. Evenings were spent having bonfires on the beach or playing games at the large kitchen table. We have vacationed in the U.P. before so we were prepared for the bugs with plenty of bug spray. Most of all we were able to spend quality time with each other in solitude which is exactly what we wanted. We are already discussing when we would like to return! Thanks Charlie!

We didn’t find out until we fot there that everything runs off solar power or propane. There is a generator if power dips too low. Propane lights throughout the house, but weren't bright enough for evening reading.
Truly though, the only disappointment was not catching any fish, and someone was out every day. Didn't even get any bites. Be sure to bring lots of mosquito spray, as there are tons of them in the morning and evenings. The owner touched base a couple times during our stay, to see if everything was ok, which was very nice. He was very quick to respond to any questions we had. If you don't mind the lack of real electricity and being 2.5 miles off the road into the woods, a definite place to check out. Overall, we had a great stay. Very peaceful, and plenty of things for the kids to do between the water toys and game room.

Charlie, was kind enough to accommodate my special request. It was absolutely perfect, we had a lovey Christmas in the woods and the kids had a fantastic time playing in the snow. We had a cozy fire every day and spent the holidays enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The lodge was ideal for our special trip.

We had a fantastic week at Poplar Lake Lodge. Charlie was a great host and filled us in on all the nuances of lake life. We were looking for a private escape out in nature with great fishing and that is exactly what we got. The inside is spacious and equipped with everything we needed, and the inside simply paled in comparison, to what the outdoors offered when you walk down to the lake. We’ve been to many lake houses, and this is the first lake house that had a sandy beach for children, a total game changer. Also, kiddy kingdom was very helpful for our grandchildren as they sometimes get bored with the adults focused on fishing.
Thanks Charlie! We will be back.

Vacationed at Charlie's Lodge in July with my husband and four children ages 9, 8, 6, & 4. Everything was wonderful. If you're looking for a remote and peaceful get-away-from-it-all vacation, this place is for you! We only left the property once to get some groceries. There was so much to do! Charlie was very attentive and helpful. We definitely plan to come back!

We spent a week at this property, enjoying each others company, cooking, playing games, fishing, reading, playing pool, bad mitten, ping pong, campfires and all sorts of sand and water activities. It was a great removal of all distractions and all about being together. If your plan is to just relax, this is the place for you. The bugs were not our friends but Charlie had well prepared us for that and Off Deep Woods bug spray kept them at bay. Charlie does a great job of making sure you understand everything and is available at any time. Great vacation!

This was the perfect place for our annual UP trip!
Cabin is roomy and the view of the lake is awesome. Everything you need to cook with is in the perfectly stocked kitchen! We caught some blue bill and bass off the pier. The fire pits are great and having the outdoor chairs by the lake was perfect. The cabin was clean and functional all around. The wood stove was perfect for the chilly last night we were there. We loved the two track to get to the cabin. We will definitely be back!

Our group likes to be as remote in the wilderness as possible, but as we get older, we also like to be comfortable as well. This place is huge, very well kept and clean. It's the perfect combination of privacy and solitude with a fantastic enjoyable modern home on a private lake. Looking forward to multiple return visits.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Lodge. There was so much to do on the lake and plenty of room inside to spread out. The only thing all future renters should know is that is a 45 minute ride to the nearest store to get anything you forgot. We never left the place after the first day.

The location was as described, very secluded. We had the lake to ourselves. Charlie was awesome! Great communicator and always willing to help! Plenty of things to do inside and outside. Bring bug spray if you plan on going for a walk. I've never seen so many humming birds in one place (right outside the front of the house)!

So serene!
We had an amazing time at this property. Serene is just one word to describe this amazing place! Charlie is a very attentive host and was available to answer all the questions we had. I would highly recommend!

A week with the Swans
An epically secluded lodge in the UP of Michigan thats everything you need. We brought lots of bug spray, and all the food and clothes we need. We were set, no need to leave the house, unless of course you want to. We took one day to Munising and did the tourist thing of boat tours of the Pictured Rocks. Was an easy and relaxing drive up. Surrounding community is kind and welcoming. The most welcoming of all however is Charlie. Very helpful, responsive, and devoted to you having a good week.
I look forward to coming and staying another time, and my parents who came with my family of 6 thoroughly enjoyed it and also desire to come back.
Come with an attitude of adventure. And a thirst for relaxation and connecting with your loved ones and the bounty of nature.
Titled week with the Swans, for the gorgeous mated pair of trumpeter swans with the 5 egglets we so loved watching this week on the lake.

Home away from Home
We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay during our U.P. vacation. From the communication with Charlie to the fishing in the lake, it was just what we wanted. We ended up catching 7 different species of fish including the Northern Pike. There were multiple things for our family to enjoy and do. Many memories were made during our stay at the lodge. Thank you for sharing this lodge so we could enjoy it!

If you,re looking for remote this is it
The property is listed secluded, this may be an understatement, 30 minutes off the last main road. This was exactly what we were looking for.
Charlie is the most amazing host as he meets you at the lodge to go over all the unique features as this is a solar powered house. There were a couple small issues as we were the first quests for this summer, but Charlie quickly solved them and was very concerned about our experience.
Make sure you bring everything you need as it is about 45 minute drive for groceries. Mosquitoes are an issue but that's what you expect in the UP during the summer, just bring plenty of bug spray.
Nice beach with sandy bottom for the kids, fishing was good, though we were unable to catch any muskie.
Overall experience, without Charlie 4 1/2 stars, Charlie brings that up to 5 ++++ stars. Will be going back again.

Quiet, secluded, beautiful, off grid
This place is an absolute hidden gem. Quiet, secluded and exactly what we were looking for. We had 11 people-4 adults, 7 children. The lodge was clean and had everything we needed to cook all of our meals. We brought three big coolers full of food for the week and there was plenty of refrigerator/freezer space. The owner was super nice and down to earth. Communication was great prior to our arrival and on the day of as well. When we arrived, Charlie spent time going over everything about the lodge and property with my husband.
The weather was not in our favor most of the week, but we still had a fantastic time. There were plenty of indoor/outdoor activities to keep our kids entertained. The lake was absolutely gorgeous and so peaceful. Lots of fishing and bird watching. The little ones had fun playing on the beach, even though it was chilly. The big kids had a blast in the kayaks and paddle boats. The weather dried out and we were able to enjoy a bonfire the last couple of nights along with some beautiful sunsets. One of our favorite stays and we cannot wait to go back!

Very Remote, Just what I needed!
We had a great time, staying for a week during the peak of fall color. The views from the house were gorgeous. The property is kept nicely, and Charlie has gone to great lengths to make sure there are activities for everyone for both daytime and night time, good weather or bad. The property is centrally located to many different area attractions, not that you would even need to leave the property to have a good time. I would stay here again.

Ultimate relaxation
Everything was great! Beautiful scenery, lots of outdoor toys, fishing, and best of all - QUIET. Listening to the sound of water lapping the deck at night was so restful. Thanks for making our friend's getaway week so successful and fun!

This was our second year, Great time. Everything is as advertised, and maybe a bit better! Kids loved paddle boards and floating dock. Everyone enjoyed badminton and other games (provided). Fishing this year was great, group caught several large pike.

Fantastic place
The lodge was quite possibly the best vacation rental we have had. Charlie was always available whenever we had questions. There was so much to do we didn’t have to leave if we didn’t want to. The lake was calm and clean and the kids loved swimming and boating. Would book again if I’m in the UP.

Amazing secluded place
With our group size, 8 adults and 5 children, there was plenty of room in this huge spacious lodge. More than enough activities to keep everyone busy on a sunny or rainy day. (see listing) Being off the grid there are a few housekeeping items that needed to be attended to, but nothing that disrupted the time you want to spend enjoying the property. You will not be disappointed if seclusion and quiet are what you are looking for at Charlie's cabin, and he is a first rate communicator. Thanks from the whole crew Charlie!!

R & R at Poplar Lodge
Charlie is the perfect host! Our family has had a very busy, hectic year and we all needed some time away to rest. The lodge was very clean and well organized. The kitchen was the best stocked kitchen in all of our VRBO stays. Charlie's directions to the lodge were spot on. A beautiful relaxing place to rejuvenate and recharge. Charlie went above and beyond to make our stay the best. Definitely will want to come back again!

Definitely recommend!
We loved our stay here! Definitely our favorite vacation we’ve taken with our children! The lodge is roomy and nice and has lots of things to do inside. The outside is of course very beautiful and the grounds are well maintained. Everything was organized and well kept. The lake is so pretty and clean! Our 3 and 5 year old spent hours playing in the sand and water, and they loved the playground too! Our 17 year old loved the beach and hammock. We all enjoyed the paddle boards, kayaks, paddle boats, and swimming off of the swimming dock. My husband, father in law, and myself all caught some big fish! We all caught a pike, my husband and myself caught a couple big bass, and I caught a small muskie. There were lots of other smaller fish caught - crappie, red ear, and yellow perch. The kids loved catching the smaller fish! There’s a large screened in porch that is perfect for relaxing and having coffee. As far as downsides, I was a little concerned about no washing machine but it wasn’t a problem, just pack plenty of clothes and towels! Also, the road leading in is kinda rough. We had no issues in our truck, but my in laws had a little trouble in their minivan. We went in early June and had to fight off biting black flies and mosquitos. The owner said the flies aren’t as bad after June. Just be sure to bring big repellant and hydrocortisone cream! And they have a bug zapper that is fun to use! I would definitely recommend this as a vacation spot to families as it’s one of the only places where you can have a large private lake in a very beautiful area! The kids put their life jackets on and had a nice beach area with water to play in. It beat going to a river or ocean where there’s the constant threat of current/waves. It was so nice to be able to relax while they played. One of a kind place and experience!

Absolutely fantastic vacation spot with the family!
We had all ages covered from littles as young as 2, teenagers, young adults, and us parents. We had no need to go elsewhere with all the outdoor and indoor activities provided with the lodge that kept everyone connected and entertained. Without their games systems at that. After arrival we soon realized we had completely over packed as quite a bit of what we brought was already there provided. Charlie was a fantastic host and super friendly… even offered a couple times to pick us up anything we may need from town. The lake was so peaceful as we had it all to ourselves. With the exception of the momma and daddy swans with their 5 babies. The sand area brought my teenagers/young adults back to building sand castle towns so that was a huge benefit even for them. At night the stars were astonishing. Nightly fires by the lake were fantastic. We definitely want to make this our annual family tradition!

Good Time!
Lodge had everything we needed. Nice family time for all ages Lots to do for everyone. Owner does a great job ensuring you are well informed and have everything you need. We had big group adults/kids, there was enough space and everyone kept busy. As stated the driveway is long and narrow, but manageable. It just takes longer than we expected to get in and out but nothing you can't plan for.. Hoping to go back

Solar powered get-away
Our extended family of 13 loved staying in Charlie's lodge. Each family unit had their own bedroom. On cooler nights, lighting a few of the gas lanterns found in each room not only provided cozy lighting, but a bit of additional warmth.
Memories were made by all from the adventure of the trek in after torrential rains, to the sandy little beach that was just right for the kids. The swimming raft further out was perfect for the young adults in our group, as well as the paddle boards, paddle boats, and kyaks. Something for everyone. The screened in porch was perfect for table games at night when bugs or rain would have been a problem outside.
Charlie answered all questions about the solar and generator power, making sure we had what we needed to make our stay comfortable, including the delivery of additional fans when the weather heated up.
Thank you, Charlie, for allowing us the use of your beautiful property. It was perfect for our group.

Another amazing UP vacation in the books!
Thank you Charlie for sharing your home with us! The views were absolutely beautiful! The first picture I snapped of the lake is my absolute favorite from vacation. Sitting on the deck and watching the sun rise in the morning was the best!! The kitchen has literally everything you could possibly need and more. Also more than enough beds and bathrooms. The direct tv and wifi was definitely a plus. We did have a couple rainy days so the kids took advantage of the pool table, foosball table and the insane amount of board games and movies. When the sun was shining my husband and kids really enjoyed fishing. They caught a lot of perch and panfish! The kids also loved the paddle boards, kayaks, and the floating raft. My favorite was definitely the paddle boards! They are just so relaxing. We vacation in the UP every summer and this is the first time that the owner was actually local and greeted us and answered any questions we had. The closest store is about 30 minutes away, so if Charlie was heading our way he called and asked if we needed anything. He seriously went above and beyond. We had any amazing time at the lodge.
Thanks again!
