Melanie's guest unit was perfect for my stay with my two children. Close to the lake, beautiful/quiet neighborhood. Everything we hoped for. We'll be back!

Thank you so much Melanie.......the place was beautiful and perfect for us. We visited so many cool shops and restaurants, the lake, the Washington Green, etc.
We even enjoyed the rain because we don't get to experience it much in Vegas. :)
Again, thank you for making our stay memorable.

Melanie and Gary are lovely hosts! Their place is a special little gem in the woods near New Preston. And they have some friendly pups and delicious chocolate chip cookies! :)

This charming 2-bedroom New Preston apartment was the perfect escape! Cozy rooms welcomed us with peace and comfort, melting away city stress. Host Melanie's warm smile and delicious homemade cookies added a personal touch that made our stay truly heartwarming.
Reconnecting with nature was easy - breathtaking scenery, quiet streets, and a nearby lake offered peaceful beauty. This wasn't just a place to stay, it was an experience we'll treasure.
Highly recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
P.S. too bad I forgot Ask Melanie for the cookie recipe, were delicious!

The Artist Annex was just what I was looking for: a perfect little getaway to recharge my batteries for a few days. Melanie and Gary (as well as their adorable dogs) were gracious and accommodating hosts, and the space was bright and airy with a perfect deck for coffee in the a.m. and wine in the evening (chipmunk visitors aplenty)! The complimentary bottle of wine and delish chocolate chip cookies were a perfect touch! Great places nearby for hiking, and plenty of sights to explore. Definitely check out The Smithy Cafe at 9 Main, The Owl Wine Bar and White Horse Pub. All of the locals I met along the way were so friendly and New Preston itself was quaint and picturesque. Would come back in a heartbeat!

Loved our stay at Chagall's retreat. We were in town over Memorial Day weekend for a friend's birthday and luckily found Melanie's guesthouse nearby. Convenient location, walking distance to the lake, beautiful surroundings, extremely comfortable and very clean and quiet. Loved the adjacent patio surrounded by nature. Easy access and parking. The home-made cookies were an unexpected bonus. Melanie was welcoming and friendly, and had great recommendations for restaurants etc. 100% would stay again next time in the area!

A charming apartment close to Lake Waramug and
the tiny village of New Preston.
The space is light and airy. From the piles of sumptuous towels to the fabulous homemade cookies it's perfect spot for a long weekend (or more),
The kitchen is small but quite serviceable.
there is no living room per se but there is a lovely deck which was even better.
Melanie could not have been a more warm and gracious host.
We hope to be back.

Nice get away spot
My wife, two children and I stayed for a long weekend. It was great! It was minutes from the town boat launch and we had blast boating on the lake. We also went to Kent falls, it was about a 15 minute drive. The area is so quiet and peaceful. We will be going back soon!

We had an amazing long girls weekend! We visited lots of local wineries, hiked, and went to a Drive-In across the NY border. The property was great and we had everything we needed!

Nice quiet location with everything we needed for a weekend getaway. Appreciated the homemade cookies and bottle of wine that Melanie left for us. Everything was clean & comfortable.

a beautiful respite
We loved the cottage and the owners were very responsive to any of our questions. Only concern was that the skylights let in light and I'm sensitive to light so woke up earlier than I wanted to in the morning. On the other hand it was great to be up when the rest of the world was quiet. We got to see a bear!

A wonderful stay!
My wife and I had a great few days at this cozy suite. Very quiet and comfy, with lots of natural light and a patio for meals. Easy access to the Lake Waramaug beach; the towns of New Preston, Washington, and Kent; and hiking and biking. We even went over to the Storm King Art Center for one morning - an easy drive. Melanie, the owner, was incredibly responsive. Highly recommend it.

Romantic Studio with Nature At the Front Door
Each night of our stay the moon shined brightly and could be seen through the sky lights that adorned the ceiling of Melanie's and Gary's quaint and romantic space, a former artist studio. The space had plenty of room for me, my spouse, and Piper, our beloved family pet, and we greatly appreciated the complimentary bottle of wine and flowers that welcomed us to the studio. The hosts provided us with plenty of privacy and space to enjoy their lovely studio which connected to their beautiful home. The hosts were accessible via text and Melanie responded instantly in response to questions or requests for restaurant and hiking suggestions.
We learned that nature in the form of numerous conservation areas were abundant and within an easy drive of the property. Our favorite was the Hidden Valley Preserve where we hiked several of the trails which spanned from easy to moderate difficulty and traversed along the river and rose to elevations that allowed spectacular views of the surrounding valley.
We look forward to returning to the area and will definitely book Melanie's and Gary's wonderful space again.

Lovely little place
I think this is a great single person getaway spot. It being summer sleeping with the doors open was fantastic. If the light wakes you up be prepared, this space has a lot of natural light. It was lovely and exactly what I needed.

Beautiful property, excellent location & lovely property owners
The Annex is lovely, really well maintained with beautiful art, quilts & lots of natural light. It's surrounded by mature trees, so you sort of feel like you are in a treehouse. It's very close to Lake Waramoug, and the owners provide a guest pass to the local beach on the lake.
The owners are extremely gracious and communicative. Their house is on the same property and semi-attached to the loft. They even left a welcome bottle of wine in the fridge for us. This was my family's best VRBO/ Airbnb experience in a long time especially as traveling with children and a puppy can be stressful.
Note, to access the loft requires going up a set of exterior stairs on either side, so is best suited for people & pets w/out any mobility issues. Also, it was worked for us, but if you need a very dark room to sleep through the night, be aware not all the large windows have shades especially the larger of the two bedrooms.
But we were so glad we stay at the annex and to re-visit the Lake Waramoug area.

Lovely escape on Lake Waramaug!
My wife, 10 year old son, our dog and I enjoyed a lovely stay here. We walked to the beach to swim in Lake Waramaug, enjoyed the great hiking within 10 minutes driving, explored the quaint towns and restaurants nearby and appreciated being in this idyllic setting in the woods. The hosts were extremely hospitable and accommodating. The house was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The hosts left us a bottle of rose in the refrigerator as well as amazing homemade cookies upon our arrival. Would highly recommend this getaway!

Perfect location for a quiet getaway
Easy access to the lake, wineries, hiking, and shopping in the charming little towns of New Preston and Washington. The cottage is clean inside and we had a bottle of wine and cookies waiting for us. However the small outside area is semi overgrown and there was tree debris on the back patio that the dogs kept tracking inside. Renters should be aware that there is a stove top, grill and microwave, but no oven. There are no provisions except salt and pepper. The large bedroom is very bright with skylights, but the folding table and mismatched chairs in the bedroom aren't exactly comfortable for dining or hanging out on rainy days.

It could not have been a more lovely experience :-).
It would be hard to express how sweet, idyllic, lush, and lovely this wonderful stay was for both me and my teenage son. We had rented this property as a base for a week of dad/son outings, but it was so much more than a place to just rest our heads -- it was a place that we looked forward to returning to every day to put up our feet, enjoy a good meal on the deck, recount our adventures while listening to nature, and sleep in the cozy and peace that Melanie, the owner, has created.
The owners have not only appointed this haven with everything that one needs, but have gone the extra mile with thoughtful art, interesting books, warm lighting, a sweet little kitchen, and other little touches that make all the difference. When you meet them this won't come as a surprise at all, as they are warm, welcoming, and as kind (with two dogs who are just as adorable) as they get.
The location is also ideal, completely idyllic but with numerous restaurants/shops just a few minutes drive away, and a beach within walking distance.
We are already looking forward to our return. It can't come soon enough!

Wonderful getaway!
My fiance, dog and I wanted to find a place to decompress/get away from our normal four walls in the city without having to travel that far. The minute I saw this property, I loved the clean, crisp look of it as well as the private location in the woods.
Melanie and Gary were the best hosts and made us feel comfortable straight away. The Chagall Retreat was nicely appointed and tucked privately at the top of a hill. The space is wonderfully decorated and there is an outdoor patio with a grill which was a great place to read, have dinner or enjoy a nice beverage.
Our dog Shadow loved the property too and enjoyed the company of his new canine friends Dexter and Lulu.
Melanie left yummy cookies and wine for us which was super thoughtful. She continually checked in to make sure we were all set right until the day we left.
There is lots to do in the area whether it is hiking, going to the small beach, checking out nice restaurants or relaxing at the spa - which are all close by. Highly recommend and we will certainly be back!

Quaint and cozy, lovely property to relax and unwind
My GF and I stayed at the property for a week to get away from the hustle and bustle. The location was very nice and quiet and the artist studio was beautifully adorned to create an inspiring mood. I was able to write as well as prepare for some presentations and attend meetings while I tell worked. The kitchen was a little small but we ate our meals mostly outside, which had a very nice and large picnic table to dine. The smaller adjacent bedroom was nice to have for guests, but we found that it would have benefit d to have a comfortable sofa and sitting area to spread out and relax. Overall it was a great place and we would recommend it to anyone who wants to relax as we did.

Cozy charming CT apartment
From the moment I found this listing from our exit of the driveway Melanie and her husband added to our wonderful weekend. We were visiting the area for a graduation but came early to enjoy the area and we did just that. This apartment felt like home with everything we needed. Hoping for better weather next time to enjoy the fabulous outdoor patio!! Plenty of room for my husband and I and two adult children. We can’t wait to return for more of this charming CT listing.

A place to stay, relax and have fun!
My wife Claudia, our dog Pepper and I really enjoyed staying on this property for 4 nights. We were looking to have a few days of relaxation and adventure, and were not disappointed. Melanie and Gary are excellent hosts, very friendly, easy going and always attentive to our needs while respecting our space and privacy. They provided excellent recommendations on nearby places to visit and fantastic local restaurants. Their dogs, Lulu and Dexter, are friendly and playful. The studio is very comfortable, private and functional. We are very pleased with the complete experience and look forward to visiting again in the future.

Great place. Very comfortable. Bed was fantastic. The deck off the main room made for a very private space with a fabulous "curtain" of trees. Lots of great hiking spots nearby. Host was very communicative and always available.

Had a break of 5 days with my wife and 2 kids. The place is well decorated and charming. It is surrounded by trees. Everything in the house was of great quality and hand picked by Melanie. Melanie was also very responsive and has a great sense of hospitality. Would definitively go back to enjoy Fall colors. Many hiking places around the area.

Everything about my our stay was a delight. Melanie was responsive and helpful (and is very dog friendly). Check-in was seamless. The place was immaculately clean, in good function well taken care of, and truly serene. I would just say that the place isn't a great fit for four adults. It may be a bit tight, because of the layout. The area/region is absolutely perfect. Lakes. Boating. Nature preserves. Bicycling. Hiking. Produce farms. Even driving around the area was gorgeous. Highly recommend. Thanks Melanie!

Perfect Weekend Getaway
We found the annex after our reservation at another VRBO got canceled at the last minute. Melanie saved the day and took our reservation the day before our trip was scheduled to begin. We were glad we ended up staying here. There was so much to do nearby (hiking, the beach at Lake Waramaug, restaurants, etc.). The annex was bright, airy, & clean, and Melanie & Gary were great hosts.

My family enjoyed everything about our stay! Chagall's Retreat is wonderful place to unplug!
This is location is perfect for enjoying the amazing outdoors in Litchfi County, Connecticut. Melanie and Gary are absolutely great hosts.
The space was perfect for our 3 year old daughter and dog. We were within in minutes of Lake Waramaug, tons of hiking trails, farms, and really great local food options. Our daughter enjoyed swimming at the lake, hiking the Story Book Trail at Macricostas Preserve and walks along the river at Hidden Valley Perserve.
We had a great time gathering local produce and grilling in the evenings.
The property is quiet, tranquil, and a great place to unplug for a week of vacation.
