What a quaint, adorable hotel in the village of Appenzell!! We couldn't be happier! The hotel is right in the heart of town. It has an old feel to it, but the bathroom and everything is nicely updated. We had free breakfast with ours, which was much more than what I expected--nice spread of meats, appenzeller cheeses, granolas, breads, etc. They also have a restaurant with exceptional foods. We loved everything about our stay and will recommend it to everyone!!

The staff is so friendly and helpful. Especially the front dest. Never found a more helpful person. The breakfast was great. Normal for european hotels. the location was right is the middle of town next to all the shops and restaurants. Only short walk to the train station. Parking is in abundance all around the hotel. The room the clean and comfortable. The bath is very nice. My only comment is that is needs better pillows.

We stayed in 5 hotels in Switzerland during our visit ranging from 2-4.5 star, and this was our least favorite property. The pillows were barely pillows. No safe in the room. Also, the room description on Hotels.com is misleading/inaccurate. There is no minibar, no 42" TV, and no refrigerator in the room. (There is a refrigerator outside of the room where you can buy drinks, but not in the room.) But, the restaurant was very good and so was the breakfast. So that's something.

Amazing stay and amazing staff. We also enjoyed dinner as well and it was also very good. Great Place....would send all my friends and family here :-)

Our room had a beautiful view of the town square and the hills behind. Shopping and site seeing is all a very close walk away. Parking was very accessible and included with the hotel (a rarity in Switzerland). Spacious room with space to sit and look out the windows.

It was during Fasnacht. They automatically upgraded my room so I could have something quieter during the festivities. This is how they value their customers. The restaurant was wonderful with a good, hot breakfast. The staff were fun to get to know. Lovely people. There is a reason this hotel and restaurant are lauded in the Rick Steves guide. I will return! Thank you!!

Loved this place and the staff were fantastic. Couldn’t do enough for us. Met the owner and he was so abliging. If anyone wants to get off the beaten track, Appenzell is the place to go. Surrounding farmlands were stunning.

Excellent hotel with great restaurant. Good and competent service. Rooms are a little small but okay for a business trip (had a single room). Private parking for cars. St. Gallen is a short trip down the hill. Appenzell is a charming little town very much preserved in its original state.

Very quaint and comfortable hotel. Welcoming and accommodating staff! Warning: no air conditioning, but it’s hard to find AC in Switzerland.

The Hotel Appenzell is a lovely hotel in good location at a reasonable price. The room was large and modern. The staff is friendly and the host and hostess attentive. The hotel is elegant, with old world charm, yet it offers all the modern conveniences and amenities. The restaurant is wonderful and we ended up eating there twice during our stay.

I would not consider it a great value. Since we were there in late June with the temperature hotter than we expected , we had to keep the windows open. Since they opened inward into a small room it made the room even smaller having to be careful not to hit a window as you walked in your room. We did have to ask for a fan for the evening which had to be kept on most of the time. There were some hours in the night that it did cool down a little. We did not find the restaurant a pleasant experience. The meal was adequate but we could not get over the fact that there was a charge for tap water service since my wife did not want mineral water. For a average Swiss restaurant bill, this definitely fits into the- Really?- category. Two nights would have been better than 3. We found the Town had little to see for more than one day unless you plan to hike. A friend told us to stay at St.Gallen and visit Appenzell for the day. He was right! We should have listened? Clean, friendly, good restaurant. Strongly advise you not get room facing the square (front) due to outside noise and floodlites.

We arrived in Appenzell about 10:30 a.m. after overnight flight from Austin, TX via NYC. The staff watched our luggage while we walked around some until our room was ready - 30-45 minutes. We cleaned up and did some more walking in town until we returned to our room for a short nap, followed by a quiet dinner in the wonderful little hotel dining room. Breakfast was included and was great. The terrace was a great place for a beer and some bread & cheese after our walk-abouts. We enjoyed the town and our trip to Ebenalp. Bottom line, this is a great place to start one's tour of Switzerland. It was a great place to relax after the long trip from Texas.
