Visiting for my Brother’s 60th birthday we were upgraded to a suite which was a lovely surprise

Excellent location, breakfast and staff. Very old, cozy hotel with amazing history!

I love staying at the red lion , but last night was very noisy until 4 am , room overlooking courtyard and people shouting and laughing loudly until 4 am
2.0
Friendly staff, large room and comfortable bed.

The receptionist was most unhelpful when we enquired about parking. We were advised to park (illegally) in the loading zone at the entrance, then later told to go to the hotel carpark, which we found locked and full. Then tried public car parks which were full, and finally returned to the illegal park at the front of the hotel. Eventually, after we had dined, we found space in a public car park - just as well I don't drink! All the other staff we encountered were wonderful.

Unhelpful reception staff on arrival, room was tired and old, cooked breakfast buffet was cold.
Over priced MASSIVELY

I booked this hotel due to its attractive exterior and the claim on your website that parking was available. Upon arrival, I discovered that parking was “not available”. Additionally, the room assigned to me was on a steep incline, even causing the bed to tilt. I can provide photos if desired. The carpet was stained with dark spots, and the window overlooked a very dirty, small inner courtyard.
While the exterior is undeniably beautiful, the interior is certainly not worth the 245,75 euros I paid. I believe a more appropriate price would be around 120,00 euros.

Great location dating back to the early 1200s, and with room layout and motif matching its historical timeframe as much as possible, while still having modern conveniences.

Location, and thirteen century theme

It was a superb hotel in an amazing part of Salisbury!

I stayed for one night.
The weather was warm but not hot, however the room temp was ridiculous. There is no air con in the room (not a surprise given the age of the property) and only a fan to cool the room down. I had to have the window open all night which lead to lots of noise and made it terrible to sleep.
On top of that the key card didn't work on my room, not once, twice. The staff said "oh yeah we know there's issues with that door" as he worked away at the lock with a screwdriver. Clearly the management don't actually care, otherwise they would get the lock fixed given the staff know about the lock issue for ages.
Then at breakfast they ran out of coffee and I had to wait 20mins to get a cup full of bits, horrible. There were the normal silver platters out for breakfast but they were empty. No-one told me the servers took your order. So I waited for 25mins (minus any coffee) waiting for someone to take my order. It then took another 10mins to get my breakfast which was incredibly salty.
Overall, a terrible experience.

Nice location, room large, I only marked it down due to the net curtains shabby and ripped

I very much liked my stay at the Red Lion, however I was a little disappointed about my room, from the photos it seemed quite modern but it wasn’t, however there was good food options for breakfast as well as dinner. There was a very good bar as well and very friendly staff.

The hotel did not notify me(no emails no messages on Expedia) that there was a wedding hosted in the hotel, the staff kept saying nothing they will do at the moment. Loud music continued until 12am.
Not very clean but worth the price….
Staff at the concierge was friendly.
The garden was nice.

A great location, our room was a little dated and in need of some tlc. But on the whole it’s fine.

Very unique property - - the oldest hotel in continuous use in Europe (800 years old). Very friendly staff, especially at reception. Nice breakfast. Limited parking, so that can be a challenge.

The staff were lovely and helpful. The sink was dirty and the shower didn't work at all. I didn't report this as I was attending a funeral in the morning and didn't want to deal with reporting any problems, etc., so that part is on me. The towels were clean though and the room was refreshed with soaps, etc.

The bathroom was filthy no fridge . Sockets faltering no bulb in desk lamp. Not replaced even after being asked for.. only 1 tea bag 2 coffee
Never again

The hotel is nicely located in the middle of the town and it looks very cozy. The receptionist was also very friendly. Our room was also quite cozy to look at but it was crazy hot under the roof and we were not able to open the window. Even with fans I think it was around 35 degrees all night which was horrible.

Lovely pub/hotel and the staff are excellent. The site has limited parking so book ahead if you wish to reserve a space. In a great location within the centre of Salisbury, close to the Cathedral, shops and restaurants. Can be a little noisy at night, but worth it for the convenience.

Hotel claims to be a 4 star hotel yet they have failed on main criteria for a 1 star hotel which is cleanliness. The hotel is dated, a bit run down and at the same time has so much potential. The light curtains in our room were ripped and had holes in them. The top of the headboard was dusty, we pulled the bed off the headboard as wanted to connect the 2 single beds so we don't slide around and the floor was also very dusty, it was evident that it has not been vacuumed in a very long time. The bathroom was very poor, the taps and shower head had rust and limescale and the shower curtain was mouldy.
Very disappointing stay overall as looking at the website pictures it did not live up to those expectations. The courtyard is lovely with all the flowers and plants growing around the building but that's about it. I worked at a 4star hotel before and this was not to the standard of what 4 star hotel should be like. Would not stay there again.

This place is an incredible gem. I can't be more serious when I say this place was an absolutely stunning find for such an affordable rate. I was coming into Salisbury to see nearby sites such as Stonehenge and Old Sarum and Salisbury Cathedral. The Red Lion is a historic, 800 year old inn located conveniently within a lovely short walk to the cathedral and a 2 minute walk to the bus station for all of the historic sites. Walking in to the ivy lined courtyard to the half timber building with the reception counter in it, I could already tell this place had been cared for very lovingly over the years. The counter staff were beyond helpful from check in onward for any requests, including allowing me to leave my luggage safely for four days and allowing me to extend my stay here not once but three times! The Red Lion has so much charm and character but is also impeccably kept up. I stayed in two different rooms while staying here and both were very clean, comfortable and spacious. I loved having a full size bathtub and also a shower option. I ate and drank in the restaurant for a few meals and the food was probably some of the best I've had at a hotel, and also reasonably priced, and the drinks were good portioned and well made. I hope to come back and stay here again. I hope this place sticks around for another 800 years!

Dirty room. I have a feeling no one had stayed in the room for some time

Doesn’t look like much from the street, but my room was very comfortable. I would recommend to anyone.

On the Saturday night, just as we turned off our bedroom lights, the DJ downstairs started up. Each song was clearly audible through the old building’s walls.
We learned the next morning that the hotel advertises itself as a party venue and even offers to provide a DJ with disco.
In my opinion, a party venue and a hotel offering a good night’s sleep are mutually incompatible.
2.5
Lovely hotel with loads of character in the city centre and with friendly and helpful staff
4.0
Very good location to stay near the town center and a short drive away from Stonehenge!
The only thing I wish was improved was the plumbing at the guestroom toilets. There was no sufficient water flow and you need to flush 10 times. Shower and sink worked great, though.

One does not go to this hotel looking for modern facilities. So, coming here means tolerating some quirks, such as uneven floors, weird faucets in the bathroom, and an occasional light bulb flickering. Still, the hotel has plenty of charm and we had a very comfortable stay. The staff was also helpful, although they seemed a bit overwhelmed with the influx of guests. They were kind enough to keep our luggage while we were exploring Stonehenge but it took us 15 minutes to retrieve our bags. The location is great, with many restaurants nearby. The one thing to keep in mind is that many of the rooms face an internal courtyard with a bar and, on a Saturday night, it was hard to sleep early given the noise. So, I would recommend this hotel to a friend but also alert the friend about what to expect.

Loved the historical aspect of the hotel. Very convenient to the center of town and the cathedral ..The staff was excellent. The dining was very good and the courtyard and its resident cat delightful. The only I didnt like was there is no lift to get to the upper rooms…the stairs were very narrow. Summer could be a bit hot as there is no AC but that is common in Europe and the Uk. Would definitely stay again.

Excellent stay in the oldest hotel in Europe! That being said you cannot expect a lift. Everything we needed in the room for a good nights sleep; clean, comfortable, nice bed & linens. Breakfast had a great selection of proteins for once. The history is amazing

Very small room. Bot the cleanest and some of my colleagues asked it to be recleaned. In my case, the drain the the shower was clogged. It was not the worst hotel but not the best either

Received a room facing the street. The noise from passing vehicles (day and night) were too much to sleep. No sound proofing. No hot water for one night. I had to come back to tell again that this problem again before it was fixed. No working radiator for two nights. I was told that there was no room available to move. Yet, when I searched the hotel, the hotel showed availability.

I really loved the Red Lion, the whole place is truly well kept, the furniture and the decorations including the lovely framed prints are all amazing and the whole atmosphere is very welcoming and cosy. My room was very clean and reasonably spacious. I could not recommend the Red Lion more watmly. Very happy customer. Many thanks to the corteous staff too!

I had a great stay. It was a bit chilly in the room, but there was a plug in heater so it was fine. Great staff, good food and comfy bed. Thank you!

We were in the annex to the hotel and upon entering it was cold and dark, the room was on the first floor and was also cold. There was only one tea cup, only decaf instant coffee sachets, no shower gel and the bedside lights didn’t all work. I saw reception and they couldn’t guarantee heating in that room so they moved us up a floor but not to a family room . Again central heating wasn’t on but had a freestanding electric one bedside lights didn’t all work. Pillows were like sandbags! Overall hotel is the n need of immediate renovation and has an air of decline. Staff ok.

Very nice hotel. Friendly staff. Good breakfast.

An old fashioned historic hotel. It is very close to the city centre. Staff were friendly and the breakfast was adequate. Bed was fairly comfortable but the rooms are dated. Lots of dark heavy furniture around.
