Über diese cottageUnterkunft
“Canary Cottage”—aptly named for its cheery yellow exterior color—is nestled on a quiet dirt road just steps away from acres of conservation land. So private, yet close to everything! A perfect location for hiking and biking right outside the door! You can walk to stony Ducktrap Beach or drive two minutes to sandy Lincolnville Beach! A variety of birds will serenade you (including eagles and osprey circling overhead as they fish the nearby Ducktrap River).
Skylights in the center vaulted ceiling and large windows allow sunshine to pour in throughout. And on a foggy day you’ll hear the charming call of the foghorn as the ferry travels between Lincolnville Beach and the island of Islesboro.
This 1500 sq ft home is perfect for a couple, and there is a guest room for company.
You will be halfway between Camden and Belfast, with all the restaurants, shops, and galleries they have to offer. But you only have to hop 2 minutes down to the beach for waterside dining, pizza takeout, shops, a gourmet market, and coffee roaster.
Nearby Camden Hills State Park boasts numerous hiking trails and an auto road to the top of Mt Battie for a stunning view of Penobscot Bay. There are many opportunities for kayaking/canoeing in salt or fresh water. Day sails are offered from Belfast, Camden, Rockport, and Rockland harbors. For a longer adventure, you are just two hours away from Acadia National Park.
Whether you are an artist looking for inspiration or an art collector, this area has much to offer. For art-lovers, there is a wealth of galleries to choose from! Art Walks are held in Camden every third Thursday of the month, Rockland holds theirs on first Friday, and Belfast on the fourth Friday. The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland is world-reknown, particularly for their Wyeth collection.
Farmers markets featuring local produce and goods are found in Camden, Rockland, and Belfast (which has two!), and numerous vegetable and flower farmstands run by independent farmers dot the roadways.
And the restaurants! Blueberry pancakes and lobster rolls? Check! A restaurant serving fine cuisine recognized by a James Beard award? Check! Or somewhere delicious in the middle? Check! There are wonderful dining options for every taste and budget.
A notebook listing our favorite activities and restaurants will help you to make plans.
The updated kitchen is small but very well-equipped. Dine at the intimate round table or set a more formal table in the dining area. Stretch out on the living room sofa to watch tv or enjoy a book or gaze at the garden from the comfy armchairs in the sunroom. Puzzles and games await for rainy days. If you happen to have a cool day, there is a gas fireplace that operates with a remote to cozy up the living room.
Two rooms have window air-conditioning units in case of a heat wave (rare). We often get a lovely sea breeze from the Bay.
Free fiber optic internet and two Roku smart tvs will keep you connected. There is a dedicated office space. And, an elliptical trainer if you need an indoor workout.
A well-behaved dog is welcome (upon approval) and will enjoy the large backyard. Grill your dinner on the back patio while you toss a frisbee to your dog and enjoy sitting around the portable fire pit or in front of the outdoor woodstove. There is even an outdoor ping pong table for added fun!
This cozy cottage has the best of both worlds: it is a peaceful sunny haven in the woods, yet close to all of the action and activities that Midcoast Maine is known and loved for. If you want to be near the action—but have a quiet place to roost—this is for you.
The quirks: While our driveway is paved, the cottage is located .8 mile up a dirt road and it does get bumpy in between maintenance. Our (Verizon) cell coverage is usually pretty good, but you can enable wifi calling or use the landline (for local calls). Our washer/dryer is an all-in-one ductless unit. The bedrooms don’t have ceilings, they are open to the vaulted ceiling.
