About this house rental
Castle Crag is a place to relax from the bustle of cities and freeways, yet is still within a short driving distance to the finest experiences offered in California. On a protected hillside behind Jenner, this home offers incredible views of the river and the ocean. Excellent stargazing can be viewed from the upper deck (bring binoculars and/or telescope). A short walk to the ocean reveals resplendent wildlife including a seal rookery, blue herons, pelicans, seagulls, cormorants, sandpipers, ospreys, snowy egrets, hummingbirds, and many more.
This beach house offers 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The master bedroom features a Queen bed and en- suite bathroom. The second bedroom offers a Queen bed and the third offers a Queen bed. These bedrooms share a bathroom. The fourth bedroom offers 2 Twin beds, and has a shared bathroom down the hall. If needed, a double futon is in the sunroom. Two decks provide space for a barbecue and a large hot tub. The main living area on the upper floor is a spacious sunny area with connecting living room, sunroom (family room) and fully equipped kitchen. All of these rooms offer incredible views of the Russian River estuary.
Located in the quiet and quaint village of Jenner, Castle Crag is less than two hours north of San Francisco. It has magnificent views of the river valley, estuary and river's entrance to the ocean. As the village is somewhat sheltered from ocean breezes, pleasantly warm weather is the typical climate for most of the year, with occasional sea mists. For those interested in visiting wine county, this home is only a 30 minute beautiful drive along the river to the Korbel Champagne vineyards and many other world class wineries. There are excellent restaurants all along the river and the coastline between Bodega and Jenner. Swimming, surfing and sailing are 15 minutes south at Salmon Creek and Bodega (made famous in the Hitchcock movie The Birds.) Excellent hiking trails and horseback riding are only minutes away, as well as canoeing and rafting on the Russian River.

Good home. Great view. Enjoyable time.

We had a wonderful stay at castle crag. The proximity to the trails is fantastic and so beautiful. The house was spacious and comfortable and outstanding views. We were disappointed that the hot tub was not functional.

We loved this well laid out and spacious house. The views were spectacular and well worth the early rise to see the sunrise.

Sweet place to stay with an amazing view of the river and beach. Plenty of rooms and lounge areas. Enjoyed watching the pelicans riding the thermals from the deck. Only issue we had was one of the downstairs bedrooms had a bug issue, from a hole at the base of the door. Other than that, it was lovely.

Dazzling views all around, many rooms, but a bit of unique downstairs rooming layout. An incredible new deck and nice hot tub. A bit warn but a good value.

My group of friends LOVED staying at Castle Crag for a long New Year's weekend. My husband had some initial concerns after reading some other reviews here, but he wrote to Russian River Vacation Homes to ask about things like the safety of the deck, and he got a comprehensive response within a couple of hours - we were blown away by the customer service. I'm happy to say the house was clean, cozy, and perfectly safe. The hot tub and the view from the deck and sunroom are the two most awesome features here - pics don't quite give you a sense of how lovely the view over the Russian River is! The location is great too - you can walk down the hill to a convenience store/gas station and the charming Cafe Aquatica. Depending on your fitness and mobility level, you might be able to walk to beaches from here, but when a friend and I attempted it with her two dogs we wound up turning back after enjoying a beach view at one of the turnouts high up on a cliff - the narrow highway was a little too dicey for us to continue. All in all this was a fantastic stay. I'd love to return and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!

The house was difficult to get in and out of because you had to use stairs everywhere, and the stairs weren’t very safe for example no railings on the initial steps to get into the house. The carpets in the house were filthy, and I felt like I had to wash everything in the kitchen before I used it. The hot tub was lukewarm so as adults could not use it. Overall it was a bad experience and I would not recommend this place.

Dirty and dilapidated
We were very disappointed by the quality of the accommodations at Castle Crag. The property is overgrown with ivy, the deck scary wobbly, the window and door screens torn and missing. The carpet was filthy, covered in large puddle stains and disgusting. The downstairs smelled like mold. All of the the windows were cobwebby. and the skylights were filled with webs and dead bugs. The toilet seat was broken in the upstairs bathroom and the trash was filled to capacity prior to our arrival. All of the bed covers look like they are from the 80's, worn out and need replacing. When we expressed our disappointment to the management we were offered a $100 discount - this was insulting. The house is in a serious state of disrepair and neglect. The only redeeming quality was the stunning view from the main level. Oh, and the cushions in the main sitting room need replacing. Very disappointing.

Beautiful View
Very beautiful and peaceful - a view where the river runs into the ocean. Wonderful family vacation.

Wonderful house for an unplugging vacation!
This is our second year booking this house in a similar time of year for a post-holiday recovery session. There were 6 of us total, although there were room for a couple more, plus one four-legged companion. We love that there are plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate us all easily, no uncomfortable sharing of rooms or careful planning of shower schedules. The dining/living areas also more than accommodate a group of 8-10 and are so comfortable for relaxing/chatting/reading/napping/relaxing. We definitely used the hot tub, and enjoyed time on the porches soaking up the views. Location is great, we went to the beach for sunset, did some shopping in nearby Duncan Mills, and headed into Healdsburg for some wine tasting--all were an easy drive away for quick day trips. The house is clean, comfortable, the kitchen is well stocked with tools, and we love that the check in and check out process is very simple, very customer friendly with easily accessible keys and an easy check out process. Last, but definitely not least, the booking process is easy, the house contacts very accessible and responsive, and great to work with. We will likely be back next year and for years to come!

My family enjoyed their stay. There were a few minor problems.
My advice is to bypass VRBO and contact Russian River Vacation Rentals directly.

Lovely vacation home with spectacular views!
Really lovely home with plenty of room! The great room has plenty of area to spread out and chat and the views from multiple locations are just awesome!

Beautiful setting! Outstanding views.
Very comfortable home. We lived the privacy and quiet. Driveway a bit trucky to maneuver, but once you get the hang of it, no problem. Shop before you get there as grocery shopping is very limited. Goat Rock beach is a must see--go on your first day because you WILL want to go back with a picnic lunch.

Beautiful river and ocean views- peaceful.
Spacious 4 bedroom home with a well appointed kitchen and three bathrooms. Jenner is a beautiful town, with outdoor river opportunities, and wonderful drives north and south to coastal destinations, and east to the wine country. Wonderful family get away!

Know what to expect and you'll have a great trip!
I've gone back and forth on this review. I had to go with 3 stars, even though we had a great time in this house, because it needs a lot of TLC from the owners and it's pretty clearly not on their priority list. The pots and pans are wharped and won't sit on the flat top stove. Tomales Bay is around the corner, but the only oyster shucker in the house is a contraption from the fifties that doesn't work. There are tons of flashlights though! The deck is kind of falling apart and the furniture is definitely falling apart. Don't plan on using the grill. Half of the grates are corroded. The other half are missing. For future renters, every bit of information you need is in the reviews and the description. Do not expect anything more. The driveway is indeed frightening (but if I can make it, anyone can!) The views are spectacular. The house is old. And well worn. I'm pretty sure the Golden Girls had some of the same furniture. We didn't have a problem with the wifi/satellite signal at the house, but there's no signal anywhere else in the area so download the maps you need before leaving the house. That is all part of the charm of this town, though. Jenner is a sleepy little town where everything is slow and behind by a few decades. If you can accept that, you'll enjoy your stay. We kayaked the Russian River. We hiked the redwoods at Armstrong. We ate fish and chips in Bodega Bay. We saw seals and fabulous sunsets. It is a beautiful area of California and we all appreciated our location.
The property managers are super easy to deal with and very responsive. I would highly suggest to them that they remove all of the nitpicky signs throughout the house. Telling me not to wear shoes on the thread bare and heavily stained blue carpet from the sixties only tells me that the owners don't want to put any money into the house, not that it needs to be maintained.

Gorgeous Views, Lots of Space
We had a party of 10 over New Year Weekend and we truly enjoyed Castle Craig. There was plenty of space to spread out, with enough room to find quiet space if one needed. The views from every room were breathtaking; we enjoyed sitting at the patio table on the deck in the mornings and having coffee. Waking up to the view of the sunrising over the river, from the lower bedroom, was a wonderful way to bring in the new year. We loved being able to use the hot tub. And we used the fireplace every night, which made the house warm and cozy. We'd definitely stay here again!

Bachelorette Weekend
We stayed here for my bachelorette wine tasting weekend with 10 women. The view cannot be described--it's simply unbelievable! Pictures do not do it justice! There was more than enough room for all of us, both sleeping quarters and just lounging in the house. With three full bathrooms, there wasn't a problem with everyone getting ready; the number of communal spaces provided everyone to both be social and the rooms provided a retreat when we all needed a minute away. The hot tub was fun, though the temperature needed to be turned up when we got there. The kitchen is functional, and we enjoyed being able to cook breakfast and dinner here--we even brought in a private chef the first night! Clean and well laid out. There's no cell service, and even the WiFi is spotty; but we didn't miss it! Would highly recommend, and we all think this isn't the last time we will be back.

Everything we needed
This was the perfect house for our family Christmas. The location is amazing - beautiful views of the river, ocean, hills, and sunsets - and just a short drive to beaches and hikes along Route 1. The house came stocked with everything we needed and more, from books and games to firewood to a well stocked pantry. Russian River Vacation Homes provided great service and was quick to respond to all my questions, even the silly ones. Next time we'll have to stay more than three nights!

Breathtaking scenery, very clean, great space for all
More than enough room for 8 adults. We all enjoyed our stay. It was almost refreshing to not have phone service all the time (easily accessed down the road). The views town and scenery were enjoyed by all.

fantastic vacation!
We had a fantastic vacation/family re-union in Castle Crag. This house has exceeded all our expectations! First of all - its location is unbelievable. We knew it was supposed to be beautiful, but couldn't imagine how magnificent the views would be...The house is in excellent condition, it has everything one might need and on top of everything - we really liked the owners taste - the furniture and all house decorations are very stylish. There was no cell phone or internet reception in the house - but, believe it or not - nobody missed it.
I also have to mention how nice the ladies from Russian River Vacation Homes are. It was a pleasure to deal with them. They are very professional and friendly.
We've already told all our friends about this house and we will return to Castle Crag in the future.
Thank you!

Very relaxing ,great view, beautiful place to stay and get-away
My Husband, myself and three adult children enjoyed this get-away very much, The house was set up nice with everything one could ask for including the kitchen which was well stocked with everything we needed for cooking, which we did a lot, the view from the kitchen/family room was beautiful. We went Wine Tasting one day in Healdsburg, also enjoyed the town of Jenner and Bodega Bay. We will plan another trip next year.

Family Get-Together Before Holiday Celebrations Start
The views were exceptional from the Russian River to the Ocean. Deer were there to greet us at dusk all over the hillside. No fog the whole time we were there - weather was perfect - hardly a breeze and warm! The coffee house was just down the hill, five minute walk, and there were musicians and massage outside - I wanted to stay forever! Ranger station next to coffee house to gain lots of knowledge of the area. Beaches up and down Highway 1 makes for a short drive and fun for everyone. The house was immaculate and wall-to-wall windows to take in view. Perfect for large family of adults and children and dogs coming together to show their love and catch up before life becomes hectic with holiday responsibility. Some of the facilities were older, but we managed very easily.

Another great weekend at Castle Crag
A group of eight of us was back at Castle Crag for at least the fifth year in a row. Though generally modest, it has been nicely updated; it is clear the owners are taking good care of the property. We'll be back again next year.

Birthday Fun Getaway
We had an amazing time at Castle Crag. The views from the balcony and the living room were just like the picture. Just to be in the fresh air was wonderful. We rented this cabin for a weekend of fun to get out of the city and relax. It was nice to have a full kitchen so we could cook dinner every night and enjoy the view. A wonderful weekend away. Thanks again.

Stunning views
The house was a true delight, arrived in mist which was still there in the morning but cleared to the most wonderful view of the estuary and the sea. Could sit for hours just looking at the scenery. Very comfortable home, everything you need and really appreciated the sitting areas and terrace. Hot tub was fun and there is a gas barbecue. The area is wonderful, we enjoyed the red wood forest trail, canoeing down the river from the next town and the sea coast to Bodega bay with amazing sunsets. Truly relaxing haven would love to come again.
