About this house rental
Welcome to the cozy, wonderful Cottage of River Winds, a unique and wonderful all-heart redwood cottage designed by early California architect Julia Morgan! This 103-year-old cottage is the heart of our family's memories for 3 generations--and soon to be yours, too. Step back in time in this wonderfully preserved, immaculate home, truly a historic gem of old Carmel. Open beams, all-heart redwood walls, many original features, a stone fireplace, large sunny patio, antique furniture and original oil paintings of the area.
We are happy to share this family treasure with you. Our cottage stands amid a large garden on Carmel Point, just two blocks from Carmel Beach and three from Carmel River Beach. It is close to everything--just one mile to Carmel Village, about 1/2 mile to the Carmel Mission, and easy access to Hwy 1.
We have 3 bedrooms: 2 with queen beds that share a full bath (tub/shower) down a small hallway. The third bedroom is quite small and has 1 full bed with private access to a tiny full bathroom (with shower) in the main part of the house.
Fully supplied kitchen; all linens provided; cable TV, DVD player, iPod player, secure wireless internet, and everything you need for a comfortable stay.
We mostly rent by week or month; shorter stays in wintertime. If the simple peacefulness of bygone times speaks to your heart, you will fall in love with the Cottage of River Winds.

Loved the cabin! Much better than expected–pictures did not due it justice. Location, just two blocks from the miles-long Carmel boardwalk overlooking the coastline. Can walk downtown and to Carmel and Carmel River beaches. Super easy parking.

Walking through the tranquil garden to the colorful entry set the theme for our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed this warm, relaxing cottage during our cool spring getaway. This well loved and preserved home had everything we needed....including beach chairs upon request. Situated in a quiet, charming neighborhood, we enjoyed our walks to the village, beach, and Mission Ranch. Finally, the owner, Krys, was prompt, wonderful and accommodating to our inquiries. We'll definitely return to Carmel, Big Sur...and this sweet cottage!

We stayed for a month and wish we could have stayed longer. The property is just as described, a historic house with modern amenities. Both the property manager and the owner were proactive in reaching out to us during the storm and ensured we had everything we needed. Hope to stay here again soon.

We loved the close proximity to the ocean and walked to the water a couple times each day. The garden on this property is also a standout.
We enjoyed sitting on the sunny patio early in the day and having a glass of wine in the evening. The kitchen was well equipped to meet our meal prep and grilling needs.
Lastly, we enjoyed great food, beautiful drives, golf, and hiking in the gorgeous Carmel area.

Great location for walking to beaches. We were easily able to walk into town. The surrounding neighborhood is beautiful. Interior design of the house is sweet. The artwork on the walls is very enjoyable.

This is about three guys, met in high school, in 1962-1963, and since 2004 we golf for a week every year and the last 2 years Carmel has been our 'home away from home'. We hope to make it for year 3.

Lovely, well appointed, quiet family cottage within short walking distance to Carmel beach. The cottage has a beautiful, mature landscape/garden. Easy 5 minute drive to the Barnyard shopping center for groceries, dining, and almost anything else. Also , 5 minute drive to downtown Carmel for shopping, fine dining, et al). Mission ranch is just a few block away. We enjoyed a successful Monterey bay whale watching cruise and saw over 20 humpback whales and hundreds of dolphins. Visited point lobos, and cruised moss landings’ elkhorn slough. Wonderful escape to beautiful Carmel!

Fabulous historic property designed by Julia Morgan. High beam heart redwood construction with polished wood floors - a classic. We followed the owner's desire to avoid a fire in the fireplace just to respectful. Krys was easy to communicate with and left us a personalized welcome letter to greet us. We couldn't get over the beauty of the gardens and the natural stone walkways and entry. We felt privileged to be able to stay in this home. Location was a short walk to both Carmel Beach and the River Beach. Best value in Carmel Point. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to come back again!

We were blown away by the location and the gardens.
This his a charming cottage, perfect for us on our 20th wedding anniversary. You feel like you have gone back in time. I wish I could live there for the rest of my life :)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Highlights: Gorgeous gardens, proximity to a beautiful beach, comfortable cottage near Hwy 1 & town of Carmel.
The kitchen is small but adequate, as are the rooms, we prepared a few light meals in house. The bathroom I had was small, and I would have appreciated a handheld shower, tho was ok.
The furniture is antique, it is lovely.
If you enjoy a modern hotel this is probably not for you.
Good experience eating and exploring through Carmel. We walked to the raw beauty of the beach each morning.
Check out: La Biciccleta, Mission Ranch, Detjen’s.
Our host, Krys, was great! Thank you Krys.
The cottage was designed by the architect who also designed Hearst Castle.
We would love to return on our next visit.

We loved our stay in March. The propery was charming, clean, quiet and had everything one would need and located close to town and close to the beach. The cottage garden was absolutely beautiful. During our stay we where hit by 2 storms and power outages (for the whole town) and the property manager and the owner where very accomodating. Thank you to both.

This historical gem is a well preserved treasure and the gardens are magical.
Our family had such a great time here and this is a very special place that is so unique and great,
I am a little worried about sharing our review, in case too many people know about it and its just booked up forever.
You won't be disappointed in your stay and the owner and caretaker are top notch and very responsive.

This 1914 property is very well kept and has a lovely garden. It has a vintage feel, but is comfortable and warm. Walking distance to the Carmel Scenic Drive and (a longer walk) to downtown. It offered a very pleasant stay for three generations (80-year-old grandparents, late thirties parents, and a year-old baby). Highly recommended!

This house is just as advertised if not better. Plenty of room, comfortable beds, fantastic location, super clean! The kitchen is small but we cooked a number of large meals and it worked great. Can’t wait to come back.

The location, the garden, the history the furnishings -- this place has it all.
And it was much larger than I expected. If I return to this area, I wouldn't even consider staying anywhere else.

Lovely Stay in Carmel
We've stayed twice now in this home and both stays have been great. The beach is 3 blocks away and the town is about 8 blocks away. Easy walking to anywhere you want to go.
The beds are very comfortable, the kitchen stocked and there's plenty of room for a family. We had our 2 adult children with us and they each had their own room. The gardens are lovely and well maintained.
We'll be back again next year!

This historic cottage sits in an ideal
location to enjoy the beach and the village of Carmel. The neighborhood is quiet and the cottage had everything we needed for a week with our family. Even the WiFi was strong enough to do some work video conferencing. Krys the owner was a delight to work with. We are looking forward to our return soon!

Magical
We had a delightful time at this precious home. Better than the photos. Quiet, private and comfortable and also very walkable to both beaches, town, the mission, Misson Ranch, etc. The setup was perfect for our group with 3 very equal bedrooms. The patio out front was absolutely lovely to sit and have coffee or meals. We will be back.

This home is full of charm and gives a wonderful sense of historic seaside Carmel. The cottage has been beautifully and lovingly maintained and the garden was an unexpected treat. A walk out the front door in any direction was captivating. We enjoyed daily walks to the beach, the estuary and just wandering the streets of the neighborhood.

I grew up in coastal CA and this house just says "original California" to me. The furnishings and layout are simple but thoughtful and there is tended garden out every window. It is just peaceful and lovely here. Doug the caretaker was always ready to help, and everything was clean and tidy. Loved it
