About this cottage rental
Welcome to 'Fair Oaks' in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Here is your chance to stay in an authentic, historical, yet updated cottage. Step back in time and come home to a true quintessential Carmel experience.
Filled with whimsy, our 3-bedroom, 2-bath home (with an additional detached guest bedroom and bath) was built in the 1930’s and extensively remodeled several years ago. We made it more comfortable, livable, and a tiny bit more spacious. At times we sacrificed a little convenience and practicality in favor of charm and character. Here, quirky and enchanting often trump logic and perfection. But it is perfect in its own way. Great efforts were made so that when staying at this home, people could experience a little slice of “old Carmel”.
Located just outside the Golden Rectangle, Fair Oaks is 6 blocks from Ocean Avenue and downtown Carmel and 10 short blocks from the beach. You are within walking distance to many restaurants, shops, galleries and local attractions such as the beautiful Carmel Mission and Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch Restaurant and Inn. The trailhead to the Mission Trails Nature Preserve, with its forested hiking trails alongside a creek, is one block away.
The garden is lush, private, fully fenced and gated. Meandering paths surround the 18 magnificent oaks for which Fair Oaks is named. A lovely Carmel-stone patio is accessible from the living room, dining room and master bedroom. An upstairs private balcony overlooks the garden.
The cozy and comfortable living room has ample seating, built-in cabinets and shelves, an original Carmel-stone gas fireplace and an enormous pitched ceiling with unique antique chandeliers and wall sconces. A charming dining area, with its wall of french doors that lead out to the front garden and stone patio, is adjacent to the living room.
The original cabinets and hutch still exist in the sweet kitchen. New appliances and wood counters have been installed, along with antique Hungarian shelves to store the dishes and glassware. It is beautifully outfitted with Sur la Table and Anthropologie items. A small French folk art table at the window just begs for someone to sit there and enjoy their morning coffee!
A large laundry room with a Miele washer and dryer and cabinets which house extra kitchen supplies is adjacent to the kitchen. A french door leads out to the small back patio, garden and BBQ area.
The terra cotta-colored walls of the master bedroom add to its coziness and charm. A large picture window looks out to the garden and a dutch door opens to the stone patio. It is decorated with antique furniture, lighting and accessories.
Two darling bedrooms and a spacious bathroom are located on the second floor at the top of the curved staircase. The first guest room has a queen bed and 2 balconies. One balcony overlooks the living room and the other balcony overlooks the front garden. The colorful second guest room has two twin beds and a unique charm of its own.
The fourth bedroom and third bathroom is detached from the house. It has a queen bed, a table and chairs and an antique dresser/cabinet. This bedroom suite is nestled alongside the garden paths and is a refuge which provides guests with privacy from the rest the guests residing in the main house.
If you are looking for a vacation home with his-and-her bathroom sinks and a Jacuzzi tub, desire a giant chef's kitchen with a work island, or need state-of-the-art technology throughout, then keep looking….Fair Oaks is not the place for you. However, if you wish to come home to a little slice of paradise each day and appreciate vacationing in a quintessential Carmel cottage loaded with character and charm, then please consider renting this magical and unique home.

Fair Oaks is a special property with a magical garden and old world charm. We had a wonderful stay enjoying the comforts of this home. The bed a nd pillows and provided robes were wonderful luxuries. We enjoyed chilly nights by the fire doing puzzles. Kim was very attentive and quickly got back to us with any inquiries. Highly recommend this property which we look forward to returning to again

From the moment we walked thru the gate of Fair Oaks, we knew this would be special, and it was. It has a storybook feel with all the charm you expect from the pictures and description of this home. This property has been loved and well cared for which you can see at every turn. The property manager, Kim, is so professional, helpful and easy to reach. Thank you for sharing this special home with us. We hope to stay here again in the near future.

We absolutely loved our stay at Fair Oaks! The home was charming, quaint and the absolute perfect way to spend our November. The home exceeded our expectations from the moment we walked through the front gate into the gardens and patios which just took our breath away. The bedrooms/beds were comfortable and the living areas were just delightful. We especially enjoyed the fireplace on the rainy nights. The decor was so fun, whimsical and tastefully curated. Getting into town and to the beach was just a quick walk which we enjoyed every day. The property manager, Kim, was incredibly helpful, attentive and just overall very kind and amazing. We feel so blessed to have found this wonderful little gem and plan to return!

From the moment we walked in the front gate of Fair Oaks, we new it was a very special place. The grounds are beautifully landscaped giving the property, as our friends said, a “park like setting.” The house is perfectly Carmel with a large open living room, beamed ceiling, and a beautiful fireplace. Really liked the master bedroom being on the main floor, and the guest rooms upstairs. All of the beds have really comfortable mattresses with nice sheets and duvets. As you settle into the house you will continue to discover unique and wonderful decorating touches the owners have placed, which makes the house even more special. The guest house was very popular with our friends with its cozy feel and large bathroom.
As they say in real estate, location location location, and Fair Oaks has it. Easy walk to the beach, and into town. Kim is a wonderful host. We really enjoyed working with her and appreciated her availability when we had questions and special needs. We look forward to our return to Fair Oaks and creating more special memories.

Great location to town and beach. Roomy for our family. Would be 5 stars except for very small kitchen, with minimal counter space.

My husband and I stayed the month of December in Carmel. We have been here many times, but this house was by far the best house we have ever rented. It is located just a short distance to town and the beach. We walked to both many times, enjoying coffee and looking at all the cute houses.
The house is cozy and cute, with lots of personal touches to make you feel at home. The bed we slept in was super comfy. Having a fire at night in the living room, playing games and watching tv, was so relaxing.
Kim the manager was so easy to work with and very accommodating. The house is equipped with everything you need for a memorable stay in Carmel. Wouldn’t hesitate to rent again.

Fair Oaks is a very very special place that needs to be experienced to be believed! I’ll admit we are spoiled and lucky enough to have stayed at the best.. We were not disappointed! There is attention to detail at every turn: top quality furniture, bedding, cooking gear, etc; warm and comfortable robes and the softest throw blankets ever; unique, whimsical decor that surprises you from the day you arrive to the day you leave! Don’t get me started on the private, amazing and gorgeous garden… You will feel like you’re living in a fairytale and you will not want to leave.

The month spent at Fair Oaks was magical and a magical time of year. We enjoyed cold weather, minimal crowds, and the delightful residents of the city. The location was convenient for a walk to town or beach and the enclosed front yard delighted by an 18-month-old granddaughter to no end. The decor is cozy and whimsical with small hidden collections of ceramic owls or metal mice etc. The stairs are originally small and steep. So my only alert would be if you had frail guests this may be a problem for you. Kim and the staff were great. Recommend.

We had a wonderful stay at Fair Oaks. The gates front garden is zen-like and so peaceful. The beds were super comfortable. It was cold at the beach so it was wonderful to come back and light a fire in the fireplace. We didn’t really cook much because the kitchen is kind of small (although well stocked). But who wants to cook on vacation anyhow??!! Definitely highly recommend Fair Oaks!!

Can’t say enough about this Cottage. It was so perfect. The privacy, the comfy beds, cute kitchen with everything you need. The whimsical things you find everywhere you look. Clean and cozy and quiet. Walked every day to the beach and downtown. Enjoyed the private yard and cozy fireplace. Loved it.

Fair Oaks was a perfect multi-generational family Carmel getaway. Thumbs up on all counts! The house is spacious and wonderfully cozy, with delightful quirky details everywhere that make you feel instantly at home -- not like you're camping in someone else's home or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, like you're staying in a hotel, the way some rental houses feel. The house opens beautifully into the charming oak-filled garden (which is entirely hidden from the street), encouraging you to eat your meals outside and laze around reading on sunny days, and sit inside by the fire and watch the rain dripping off the oaks on rainy days. And the detached studio was a perfect bedroom for our teenage son, giving him a little space from the rest of the family. Cooking was also a pleasure at Fair Oaks: the kitchen is extraordinarily well-equipped (even plenty of cookie sheets and pie plates), and we never once found ourselves lacking for anything we needed, or trying to plan our meals around what equipment we had available. It's not a huge kitchen, but it's sizable enough to make cooking Thanksgiving dinner the usual fun for multiple cooks. In fact, the house was notably well-equipped in most ways: plenty of throw blankets for curling up on the couch, plenty of beach towels, plenty of flashlights, plenty of hangers in the closets, etc.
It's also a great house if you want to leave the car at home on your vacation. In a very quiet location, but just 7 short, easy blocks walk to both of Carmel's markets (Nielsen's & Bruno's) and to lots of Carmel's terrific restaurants. The quieter (southern) end of wonderful Carmel Beach is also a short, pleasant walk downhill from the house.
We definitely hope we'll be back at Fair Oaks the next time we spend time in Carmel!

This is our fourth visit to Fair Oaks over the last two years. We obviously like Fair Oaks very much, otherwise, we wouldn't keep coming back. One of the things that we like best is that the owners have done a great job of retaining the old charm of the home while still offering all of the modern necessities. The home is always neat and clean, well appointed and the gardens beautifully maintained. Fair Oaks is close (walking distance) to Ocean Street and the beach yet the property itself is wonderfully private. The front patio and gardens offer the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day of taking in all that Carmel has to offer. The guest cottage is perfect for those in a group that would appreciate a little extra privacy. Patty (the owner) and Kim (the manager) are great to work with and very attentive and responsive to any issue that arises. Overall, just a wonderful home away from home. We expect to continue our trips to Carmel and our stays at Fair Oaks.

Fair Oaks is a comfortable, quant, and well appointed home. The property manage, Kim, was outstanding as she inquired if everything was as I wished and if there was anything she could do. She was quick to respond with the few questions I had. She was always pleasant and professional. The house was immaculate. The home is well equipped and it is clear someone put a lot of effort to ensure that every conceivable need is accommodated. All the beds are very comfortable. There is a high quality foldout sofa bed in the guest cottage that is like a regular bed when opened, and not your typical sofa bed. I'm glad the owner went the expense to provide such an upscale sofa. The rooms and guest cottage are a good size and allow guest privacy and well furnished enough for them to be separated from the group for 'alone' time. The three bathrooms are modern and well equipped with soap products, towels and paper products. They are also a nice size. The bathrobes in each bedroom are a nice touch. The great room easily accommodates eight people for watching TV and/or conversation. The home is furnished with attractive antiques that provide very good eating, closet and draw space. The wall decorations are eclectic and charming with each day you notice something new and interesting. The garden is large, beautifully landscaped, and has several areas to sit outside to enjoy it. The large trees and paths make the area enchanting. I am very glad to have stayed here for a month would have stayed another month if I could. Great place.

We had an absolutely wonderful time staying here. The cottage is even more charming than it looks in the pictures, and every detail is attended to--lush bathrobes, wine and treats waiting upon arrival. The garden is beautiful, and a lovely place to sit for a morning coffee. We were three couples with two three year olds in tow and it worked perfectly. (I would note that all of the thoughtful, whimsical decorations are a perfect temptation for little ones, delighting them and keeping us parents on our toes). The guest house was so nicely furnished that it was the most coveted room! Kim did a great job coordinating and making sure we were comfortable. We enjoyed walking to town and the beach (few sidewalks, but also few cars so a kind of country feel) as well as riding bikes along the nearby 17 mile drive. I really can't say enough about how special this place is--we can't wait to go back!
