About this house rental
This property is suitable for families with children and related mature groups, but not for groups of younger adults who might bring many vehicles, drink or party or stay up late. The beds (2 Kings, 1 Queen etc) are best suited to families. Please do not ask to book if you are a group of unrelated adults.
This 2800-square-foot, split level architectural house inspired by the artist who commissioned it in the 1970s. From the sidewalk where you will park, there is a spectacular downhill view of the ocean 0.4 miles away. From several rooms and the rear deck there are scattered glimpses of ocean between an overgrowth of trees, bushes and plants. The living room, dining room, kitchen and master bedroom all have high or very high open-beam ceilings. Some other rooms have low ceilings. Decorated with a mix of the traditional (marble floors, 5 chandeliers, 25 hanging pendant lights, antique furniture and lights), artistic (silver nickel bathtub, track spotlights illuminate original art) and eclectic items, the property invites you to breathe, rest, dream, laugh and play. It is not the standard in-style manicured hotel with neatly mowed short lawns, and not a property newly furnished for rent only. There is fast internet, and you could stream from your own satellite or cable service to two smaller TVs, but the seating is not set up for TV viewing. Please do NOT ask to stay if the house does not match your preferences.
The pool is 3 - 6 feet deep and heated all year, but neither the pool nor spar can be used after 8pm, and also because of noise restrictions, there can be no music heard or played outside at any time. Kids playing is not a problem.
The two full suites are upstairs, each with a small ocean view between trees, and private full baths. The master suite has a king bed, a fold out full sofa-bed suitable for a child, lots room for an air-mattress (we may or may not have any since they do not last long - please ask), private balcony and a marble floor in its private bathroom. The guest suite also has a king bed and twin pull down Murphy bed. A smaller bedroom downstairs has one queen bed, and French doors to its own small private patio. A ladder loft at the top of the house, with four twin beds, serves as a fourth play/sleeping area for kids. There is also a twin bed in the large study room.
It is easy for large groups to spread out in the house. You can cook and feast in the oversized old kitchen, equipped with a six-burner, two-oven Wolf commercial-style range, large prep island. The kitchen table can seat 8, and the island has 3 stools. The dining room is bright and its table seats 10. The big living room has 2 couches, a marbled floor and tall double French doors leading to the pool and its adjacent elevated deck. Or you can retreat upstairs to one of the very private suites.
There are two areas to gather outside, on either side of the house. There is a French style white wooden dining table and BBQ in the kitchen garden, on a tiled area adjoining the kitchen. There is a small "lawn" like area of tall local grasses and natural wild plants and weeds that are adapted to the shade under the huge tree - very little will grow in the shade.
In the rear, you can sit on the deck to talk, in shade if you like, or splash in the lap pool, and soaking in the attached spa, but not after 8pm. We do not have a sun lounger - the frequent overnight ocean fog and day time sun destroy many materials. You can eat by the pool on a Balinese teak dining table, … and if you ever decide to venture off the property, Del Mar's best beaches, parks, shopping, race track, fair grounds and dining are all down the hill.
My house is near the top of a steep hill facing the ocean, about 0.4 miles straight downhill to the beach, so you may hear waves at night, but there is a steep cliff there so you must head either North or South to get to one of two beaches. You can walk to the south beach via roads or a wilderness trail but almost everyone would drive because you will want to have towels, water, cooler box, snacks, clothes etc. and it is a steep hill to come back up.
It is 1 mile from house to either of two popular beaches; one North is just north of the shops and high end restaurants of Olde Del Mar on Camino Del Mar from 11th to 15th St. The very north tip of this beach is for dogs. Torrey Pines State Beach to the south is much more beautiful and is accessed via the coast road with the best views in the county. You can park right by beside beach if you pick your timing and walk over the large breakwater rocks, of pay for two large parking lots with restrooms, but not shops. The amount of exposed sand varies by year and from tide to tide, but we prefer to go at low tide.
Although you may occasionally hear waves at night, this is usually a very quiet neighborhood; hence when outside, no shouting, screaming, and never any music or radios. Do not open gates to neighbors’ houses and do not knock on their doors. Make sure all people arriving know the house number. No events, parties, receptions etc. You must never drink alcohol to point where judgement or actions are impaired, or people become noisy. No people on property other than the guests specified at time of booking. Do not use the spa or pool after 8 pm.
This is the house I live in when not rented. It contains my personal property including clothes. It is NOT a hotel. If you are looking for convention, and all new decorations please stay in one of the 8 excellent nearby hotels including two very high ends ones. You have responsibilities and duties similar to those of any homeowner (strip beds you used and begin one cycle of washing, wash and put away dishes, put trash bins out on Sunday, clean up and put away things you moved, leaving house as you found it...). Only when you help in this way can we complete the cleaning in a few hours before the next group arrives.
You can park directly in front of the house on the street, from where there is a 50 foot path with three 4 inch steps down to the house. There is unlimited free parking downhill from the house, but NO parking uphill, in front of mailboxes or in the alley. There is room from one car or truck (but not RV) on loose stones in the rear. The garage is not part of the rental.
Please make sure everyone in your group is aware of the house rules. Your deposit will not be returned if anyone complains about a violation of a house rule. We have not had trouble with kids playing; it is always adults who cause problems.

Cozy stay, comfortable beds, nice pool. I would say it’s a sizable deposit in addition to the nightly fee and a bit strict on the rules by the owner due to it being a home the owner lives in… that said it was a nice stay.
8.0 / 10.0
Great location but way too many placards telling us how to do or use something. There was a laminated sheet in almost every room of the house. I can understand the noise issues as the pool is 5 feet from the neighbors house. The futon is only suitable for a child of 100 lbs and the loft is very difficult for any child over 12. The study bed is also very soft and not meant for anyone over 100 lbs. great stay but know that there are plenty of rules and the home needs some upgrades to command the price but then again the owner lives in it part time.

The home is large enough to accomodate families, we had 5 adults and 5 children aged 15 down to 4; and the pool and spa were great for kids. The only drawback was the heavy traffic out front. Del Mar beach park is a grest place to take kids but very hard to find parking.

Our three-generation extended family of ten had a most wonderful time at this home in Del Mar. The owner responded immediately by text to all our questions. He was most helpful in informing us about the various restaurants and shops in the area. Our teenage granddaughters enjoyed the lap pool every day. We didn’t cook any dinners at the house, but the kitchen was well-supplied. Because of the spaciousness, each of us also enjoyed solo time for reading or online activities. The house may be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues, but otherwise, suitable for large families. Given the opportunity, we would definitely hold our family reunion there again. Thank you, David!

We had a wonderful stay! Beautiful house very close to many fabulous attractions. Within walking distance to ocean, Del Mar Village, restaurants, grocery store, and other amenities. For some, Torrey Pines Natural Reserve is walking distance from the house, but we drove. Also nearby are La Jolla and UCSD.
The house was perfect for our needs. Three bedrooms, each with its own full bathroom. After walking 5 miles at Torrey Pines (which was spectacular!), it was nice to take a dip in the pool and relax in the spa.

This is our 3rd stay at this home. It is well maintained and close to both the beach and stores. We bbq while there and the grill is clean and ready to go. We enjoy the hot tub and pool. The layout is perfect for multiple families so you still have some privacy. We will definitely be back!

Everything was wonderful. Unique property with plenty of rooms/sleeping capacity. Hit tub and pool are also great!

The property is in a beautiful neighborhood and close to the Main Street which was great. There were a lot of rules which did stress me out a bit hoping we did enough to get the damage fee back. I’m sure the owner has had some unruly guests before and needs to be strict but it did kinda keep me on edge a bit. Overall amazing place with lots of beautiful character.

The home is very relaxing and was a great location, too. It’s easy to access the freeway but so close yo yhe beautiful town of Del Mar.

The house was great. Owner was responsive and flexible. The only nit is about the coffee maker. It was tiny. Maybe enough for 1 or 2 people at a time. Also, no hand towels or face towels to be found. Pool and spa were great.

We (my 80 yr old mom, son and husband) loved the house but the location was absolutely perfect! Close to beaches, airport, grocery store, sea world. View was spectacular from master bedroom. Pool was warm and hot tub was great! Host was quick with responses. Had a really lovely time.

The house is very nice and had the things you’d hope like detergent and trash bags. The pool and hot tub are wonderful.
There is a complete lack of places for you to unpack if you are looking to get settled in - no dresser or closet in the master, and similar challenges with other rooms. Similar challenge with any room to unpack groceries in the kitchen.
Be very cautious - apparently there have been problems with neighbors and any complaints could cost you your very hefty security deposit. All of this led us to feel on edge and unable to really relax.
For all of these reasons we would not return or recommend.

The architecture of the house is unusual but we really liked it. The house is roomy and fit our party of seven well. The location is great. We had a pretty easy walk down to town and the beach. The walk back was challenging due to the hill but we managed. Del Mar is beautiful!

David’s home is unique and spacious. It was ideal for our large family group. Smaller family units each had their own rooms/areas in the house, and the kitchen, living room, and pool offered welcoming spaces for everyone to spend time together. We had a great stay!

Lots of space for a large group. The kids (age 3,4 &5) liked the loft. Lots of stairs so a little nerve-wracking watching the toddlers. Laminated cards around the house (not a complaint) to explain how to operate things or explain some of the rules. Overall, I was happy with the place.

A nice, older, split level home.
PROS
Convenient drive to downtown restaurants and Torrey Pines State Beach.
We had plenty of room for our family of seven adults (three couples) and two infants.
Enjoyed the pool and hot tub on site as well as a day at the beach.
Plenty of room at the kitchen table as well as at the separate dining room.
Lots of indoor and outdoor seating.
No TV in the main area to encourage visitors to park in front of.
Good WiFi.
CONS
Could use some measuring spoons.
Need a knife sharpener.

This was our second time staying at this home. It is just what we wanted. The location is perfect for the beach, grocery stores, coffee…just getting away and being able to slow down and relax.
We hope to stay again next year!

We like this house! Very eclectic but good proximity to beach. David is very responsive and easy to communicate with. It is on a busy street but we get used to it. Jacuzzi is nice after being in ocean.

The heights of location and quiet. Relaxing and peaceful location for us. Host was responsive and made recommendations on wineries and we had a great time!

Mini family reunion was wonderful. We had 12 total and made it work for the beds. Tip: bring house shoes. A week of walking on granite made my feet hurt. The house is quaint and having the pool and hottub was great. People have complained about all of the rules, but we all felt they were reasonable. And there were great instructions for everything. If theres a rule, it's bc someone renting was a jerk. The owners live here, be respectful. Not hard to do. Anyways, the family made great memories and the house was full of love. Thanks again David!

Fantastic home, beautifully appointed with a space big enough to accommodate our friends and family! David was prompt with answers to our questions and made our stay a bump free experience.

No towels in bathrooms. Hot tub not heated as stated. We were accused of putting water into air mattress that we never used. Plus the trash cans were moved to the street before we could empty, but we carried to the street.
2.0 / 10.0
There are too many rules to follow in order to get deposit back. Made stay very stressful and uncomfortable. Property is not like pictures. Pictures need to be updated immediately. The yard needs to be cleaned up. House is on a very busy street with no view of the ocean as stated.

This was a great family friendly experience. Although we were situated close to neighbors and a main street, it was quiet and comfortable. We played while cooking and in the pool with no problem. Nice to have finctional laundry because we used lots of towels for pool.
Had a great walk to the ocean and beach. Glad they have an outdoor shower to rinse sand off the children before reentering home.
Don't recommend walking with children to neach. Better to drive.
Appreciated the hosts accessibility and responsiveness.

David was very nice and accommodating. Plenty of space in the home, kids loved the attic space bedroom. Many books to read and friendly for children and pets. Thank you, David!

The vibe in this Del Mar house is authentic 70s Southern California. Looking over the big room that lets out onto the pool, the architecture conjures up vinyl-miniskirted partygoers with Burt Bacharach on the stereo. The place is well equipped, has interesting books and better than average artwork. But as the listing says, it’s not a hotel room, it’s a place where people actually live. If that is suitable to one’s tastes, one can have a nice time here re-living the first Jerry Brown administration.

The house was absolutely beautiful and clean!! ^O^y The pool and hot tub were pretty nice! ^__^ Loved the floor plan—especially the remodeled/furnished attic—kids loved it so much!! :D The location and neighborhood were great!

This Del Mar home is huge. Lots of private tucked away areas within the house. Kids stayed in the loft area. Beds are comfortable and 3 different bathrooms. Soap, shampoo, etc are provided. Backyard pool and jacuzzi are well kept and easy to work. The home is well stocked with kitchen items, plates, cups, pots and pans, etc. Towels are abundant; face cloths and hand towels are not. The home is clean and in a great location. Parking is available mainly on Del Mar Heights, with one parking space available in the back of the house (garage is not part of the rental). The pergola off of the kitchen is no longer there. We mainly kept to the kitchen and backyard. Owner is friendly and makes himself readily available.

Lots of rules at least 8 pages. There is no off the kitchen courtyard like it looks in the picture there’s no grass and no lattice Patio furniture was covered. You park on a major St. then you go in from the street to the courtyard which is a very messy definitely not kept up. Two that corn yard that does not exist with the covered patio in the pretty furniture Pool is on a timer and only heats in the morning and by afternoon. It’s freezing cold Jacuzzi was nice. It’s been two weeks now and I’m still waiting to hear about my deposit.

6.0 / 10.0
The location of the house was great! Just a 5-10 min. Drive to downtown restaurants etc. The only downside to our stay was the long list of rules the owner had for our stay. Not separating the trash, parking in ‘undesignated areas’, moving furniture and any noise complaints were among a very long list of rules that threatened the return of our very large damage deposit. This made our stay a bit stressful. There wasn’t a clear view of the ocean from the back yard pool area due to overgrowth of the surrounding trees

We had a wonderful time at this house in Del Mar. Everyone enjoyed how eclectic it was and a fun floor plan to explore. Pool and jacuzzi were great for the kids to play in while adults made meals. Loft for kids was really fun. Ladder up to a small door made it a cool spot just for them to enjoy. TV and sound system could do with an upgrade as some others have mentioned. Very short drive to downtown Del Mar and the beach which we did everyday. We would definitely stay here again.

Del Mar Getaway
We loved our stay in Del Mar. Everything was super clean and the location was perfect. There were a few minor items that would have improved our stay. The kids loft area could use an uplift and could be made more accessible. In addition, the AV component could use an update to allow for music streaming. Overall, we had a great time and would book again in the future. Thanks David!

The perfect place for our family
We loved David's property. We came down to Del Mar to relax and chill as a family. Everyone had a wonderful time. There were great beds for all of us and plenty of space so everyone could have their down time. We spent mornings at the beach and afternoons and evenings in the pool and hot tub. David's library is amazing. There was something for everyone and we all found books that peaked our interests and shared them with each other. All in all the perfect getaway for our family and we would definitely stay here again.
