About this house rental
This 1800 Sq. foot home is located in the historic mill town of Fries, VA. The beautiful New River flows by our small village on it's way up north. 'The New River Trail' follows the river from Fries to Pulaski for over fifty miles. It is a 'Rails to Trails' project for bikers, hikers and horses. There is very little incline or decent and you will find trestles, a tunnel, beautiful wild flowers, shoals and lots of cool shade in mostly secluded deep woodlands. The fishing is great along with canoeing, tubing and kayaking.
Blue Grass Music is plentiful with The Galax Fiddlers Convention and Fries Fiddlers Convention the second and third weeks in August.
The house is only 14 miles from the most visited National Park, 'The Blue Ridge Parkway' and the Blue Ridge Music Center.
For those of you with wonderlust there are lots of narrow dirt and paved roads with pastures, mountains, creeks and valleys to explore.

We had a wonderful stay at Nanas place in Fries. The house is lovely and a great place to relax after a long day of riding. We also enjoyed the proximity to live music as we were able to experience the Thursday night Jam at the Theater in Fries and a wonderful concert at the Blue Ridge Music Center on the Parkway. Will definitely consider staying at Nanas Place again!

We stayed at "Nana's place" for a couple of nights so that we could ride a portion of the New River State Park trail on our bikes. The house was exactly as pictured with lots of homey touches and comfortable furniture. The hosts have done a great job anticipating guests' needs and planning for them. We loved sitting out on the front porch swing in the cool of the evening listening to the night noises. We were fortunate to be able to park right in front of the house but in the event on-street parking is not available there is convenient parking behind the house via a paved lane. We stayed in the upstairs queen bedroom which was very comfortable. The house was conveniently located close to one of the entrances to the bike trail. In addition to our bike ride we learned about a Thursday acoustic music night at the historic Fries Theatre from the host's information notebook. We were glad we attended; if you are in Fries on a Thursday night and like acoustic music it is a must-attend event. Thanks to Rachel and Richard for everything, especially the Oreos! :-)

This was the perfect place to stay. The owners were so nice. The house is well appointed with everything you need! My 2 Sisters and I stayed here and we all had plenty of space. The neighborhood was quiet and it was so relaxing. We played cards, watched movies and just sit out on the porch and talked. What a great time we had!

The property was amazing. The house was just
like we expected. Tim was raised in the neighborhood and we were very excited to stay there again. The house was well supplied and in excellent shape.

The house was in a nice location on a quiet street. Walking distance to a beautiful park along the river. Very close to the New River Trail (though temporary closures forced us to access the trail in other locations). Check the state park website for updates if you’re biking. As others have said, the upstairs bathroom was pretty tight, but the bedrooms and living areas were spacious. We enjoyed the porches and pretty backyard.

Great place for our annual sibling retreat. All the rooms are very inviting. We especially enjoyed the front porch and dining room for gathering and playing card games. Kitchen is well equipped with plenty of dishes, glasses, cups, flatware and other cooking needs. We appreciated the parking space behind the house. The stairs to the upstairs bedrooms has a handrail on the lower section but not from the landing to the top. It’s the only thing we older folk wished for in this house. Communication with the owners was good. Richard stopped by shortly after we arrived to welcome us and make sure we had what we needed. Would recommend Nana’s Place to others.

Above all my expectations for cleanliness, location and amenities. All agreed this is a wonderful property.

Owner is accommodating with check in etc . Although I have stayed at two properties with them , he has come banging on the doors both times which is quite disturbing..
This property is not for anyone with disabilities or handicap due to the steep steps and tiny bathrooms.. there is a major safety hazard on the back deck as there is a step down and the deck flooring is all one color and in darkness or whatever you will not notice.
The parking is behind the house with no gravel driveway or anything so it was sopping wet when we were trying to load.
Kitchen was well equipped and bed downstairs was comfortable .

This home was exactly as pictured! The neighborhood was quiet and close to the river. Our only problem, no cell service at best spotty. The owners provide a land line which made us more comfortable in case a family member would need us. We would definitely return to this home.

House was very nice, clean and quiet. Enjoyed the stay very much. Plenty of room for the family. Parking was ample in the back. Would have liked to try a little fishing but, ran out of time.
The only upgrade I have would be to install house numbers. Good thing I had the listing with the picture.

Great house in the mountains
This has become one of our favorite places to stay. Spacious, great attention to detail, and such a nice front porch.

Great house by the river
This is a super rental. Clean, very well stocked kitchen and the owners provided many personal care items (if you forgot anything, most likely it’s there). There is lots of space for a large group and the front porch is a great place to hang out. There is a full backyard with a deck, gas grill and outdoor furniture. It’s a short walk to a riverfront municipal park and the bike trail. We’ll come again! (If I was looking for a negative, it would be that the living space is broken up - not open concept , and the bathrooms are a little small. But I’m happy to trade that for the charm of an old house with a cozy front porch in a beautiful area.).

Girls getaway
My friends and I rented this listing for a short girls escape. We were in search of rest and relaxation and I believe that was achieved here. Unfortunately, I was not able to stay but my friends indicated the space was incredibly clean and inviting.
The only comment they mentioned was that due to the layout of this house, it felt cramped in certain areas -mainly the upstairs bathroom. But this is common in older homes. This property has been well maintained and cared for and the front porch is delightful- especially great for watching storms roll in!

A quaint home on a quiet street with great access to the New River Trail!
We loved the location, truly stated, it's very close to the trail as well as walking distance to the dam. Galax is a short drive away if you'd like to eat out.
The owners are very responsive. A bonus was that the neighbors were so friendly and helpful! We so enjoyed sitting on the front porch, chatting with neighbors and taking in the view.
Everything was very clean and well stocked with all that you could need for cooking or baking and plenty of linens were provided. Beds were comfy. The hosts provided several snack options and even spare toiletries in case you forgot something as well as games and books. The only drawback was that the bathrooms, especially the upstairs one, were pretty small which may present difficulty for someone of a larger frame.
Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay and we would definitely stay again!

Perfect for riding the New River Trail
All great - porch sitting, neighbors, new River trail access very close by, clean as a whistle. Had snacks! Only draw back was no shower in downstairs bath and so all of us had to share upstairs bath - tiny bathrooms.

Lovely 3BR house was roomy enough for all of us. A short walk to the New River Trail and a short drive to Comers Rock and the Iron Mt. Trail made for a fun outdoors weekend! We also enjoyed a meal and a beer in Galax, just a few miles down the road.

Staying in this house was like stepping into an idyllic scene in a Norman Rockwell painting. The whole street that this home is located on are all well kept 1920's homes that have been lovingly kept up. Most every house has a gigantic welcoming front porch complete with pretty gardens and topped off with American Flags. I may be a bit impartial, but to me, the garden & front porch of this home is the prettiest. Inside are quaint rooms decorated with warmth and obvious care. This is a 100 year old house, so there are a few sticky doors and such. Kind of like how you love & appreciate all the lines on your Granma's face, you will also love this house. Anyone can build and live in a white box. This is so much more. It's 100 years of history. So when we weren't sipping a tall cool one on the front porch, watching the world lazily go by, we spent our time riding our bikes on the New River Trail, which is literally a block away. One day we even rode 45 miles to Foster Falls & back. The trails were beautiful wide ribbons of falling leaves. After riding each day we'd go back to the house to shower & eat & then settle in for some good music & a game. Their TV room has a big coffee table filled with games & puzzles. Long review but I wanted to give this special place the review it deserves.

Great getaway
We enjoyed our stay at this Fries VA property. It is a beautiful, comfortable well-appointed older home with everything we needed. House was very clean. Scenic area close by rail to trail entrance for biking and hiking, Blue Ridge Parkway entrance, Galax dining and shopping, etc. Enjoyed this area! Both bathrooms are very small, which could be a challenge for some. Hosts were quickly responsive with any communications and very pleasant.
