About this cottage rental
High speed Wi-Fi added June 2023.
It’s mountain viewing and festival time in the Blue Ridge Mountains! Sycamore Shade is located on the banks of the Piney River in Roseland, Virginia. A short drive from Charlottesville, Lexington, Lynchburg and Staunton.
Our cottage is a great place to relax on the deck or read in the hammock. Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river. There are fishing tackle, snorkel masks and inner tubes for enjoying the river. The house is nestled between the Cardinal and the Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Religious Range. The George Washington National Forest adjoins the property.
Excursions can include hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail, four-wheeling up the Shoe Creek jeep trail, or mountain- biking the gravel roads that follow the river. Wintergreen ski resort is a short 25 minute drive. There are numerous wineries, breweries and orchards nearby, and to check for festivals and tastings at these go to The Nelson County visitor’s website.
The trilliums laurel and jack-in-the-pulpits bloom in spring. Summer is just fun because the water is warm enough (but still mountain spring fed cool) to tube or swim. Fall is spectacular because the trees are ablaze with autumn color, and the brookies can be seen spawning from the deck. Watching a movie from the extensive library of DVDs with a fire going in the woodstove is the way to relax in winter after an afternoon of skiing at Wintergreen.
It is always about 10 degrees cooler at Sycamore Shade than it is in the city, and the river makes a tranquil sound splashing over the rocks any time of year. Regardless of the season, when you pull into the driveway at Sycamore Shade, you will decompress and feel the peace and calm that that this home by a running stream always produces.
This is a truly relaxing off the grid experience allowing vacationers totally unwind.

The section of the Piney River this home sits on is amazing. Walking out the back door to the sound of the river and sitting on the deck with the tranquil views instantly put me into a trance.
I will return.

This was our second stay at this house. It was just as beautiful as we remembered it. It is the perfect location to disconnect and relax. The kids loved exploring the river and the adults took advantage of the deck. The owner is very responsive and accommodating. Couldn't ask for a better spot.

What a picturesque spot! We spent much of our time outside on the deck of this wonderful home! The house was welcoming, the beds comfortable and it had everything we needed for our long weekend.

Second visit-absolutely loved it and will definitely be back

Great kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms were perfect. Only two complaints: mosquitoes and it was a long way to the nearest grocery store and dumpster. Directions to the dumpster could have been much clearer.
Great deck and reasonably private.

We loved our stay. There were a few minor issues that the owner said would be fixed soon. We loved the stream and natural setting as well as all the extras we found to keep the kids entertained - inner tubes, foosball, etc.

The property is beautiful and we were very pleased that there were plenty of dishes, cookware linens etc. The owner was quick to respond to our questions and ensured that our visit was pleasant. The property is remote and is advertised as such. It was not an issue for us but I would suggest that you take this into consideration when planning your stay.

The property was stunning! Our family loved being together in such beautiful, natural surroundings. The house had lots of room for everyone and was clean and beautifully decorated. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances,, utensils, and staples. The host responded quickly to our questions. We would definitely want to come back!

The home was very cozy and warm. With the peacefulness of the creek near by washes all stress away. One bit of advice is to read the check in procedure as I missed the part on turning on the water well pump.

This was our second visit to this precious home and we hope to return again. We played games, completed a puzzle and enjoyed nice meals together. This home sits close to the river, with a fire pit on the bank, providing a perfect place to sit and enjoy nature. It is very relaxing and peaceful place to spend the weekend.

The location is lovely. The only challenge is the trash situation.

We visited during our children's Spring Break and loved our stay. The house was clean and cozy! The kids (human and four-legged)could not get enough of playing outside and though the water was still cold in early April they could not resist jumping in the river! The owner gave very clear opening and closing instructions and was very responsive to inquiries. The house had everything we needed to enjoy a wonderful family getaway. After the first few hours we forgot about our phones/internet and enjoyed some disconnected time hiking, playing games, reading, napping, and watching movies from the DVD collection at the house. It was perfect and we will definitely be back!

Spring break getaway for our family of four and some of our kids’ friends. My husband fished, I ran and took photos, and the kids found plenty to do to amuse themselves. The location is beautiful, relaxing, comfortable, clean, and with a well-stocked kitchen. The beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of space for everyone. Would definitely recommend.

Our family of 5 (2 college sons and their Aunt) and a Springer spaniel had a great visit to this Piney River home. It was perfect setting for a post-holiday wind down and easy access to the national forest where we hiked and fished. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Our family of 5 (3 young adult children) enjoyed a warm & cozy Thanksgiving in this charming cottage in the woods. The kitchen was surprisingly well stocked to accommodate all the food we prepared. We loved the fire pit right on Piney River and sat out there 2 of our 3 evenings. There is no cell service- which was a delightful gift-- we enjoyed card games, walks, & working on a group puzzle. We took some lovely hikes and even spotted a bald eagle. Highly recommend for a quiet stay in nature of rest, rejuvenation, and connection!

This property is a real gem! From the moment you walk in, you not only feel the serenity of the gorgeous location, but you can sense the good times that have been shared with family and friends in this cozy and welcoming space. This is clearly not a typical rental property - it is a wonderful home that the owners share with others.
The amenities are too numerous to detail. We felt like we were visiting a friend with books and games and artwork and all of the knick knacks that make a home feel warm and welcoming.
The kitchen has everything needed for preparing a dinner to be enjoyed in the family dining room, or a snack to be shared on the expansive deck by the river.
The furnishings are delightful. The bed is heavenly, the shower is wonderful, and the laundry is very convenient.
30 minutes up the scenic mountain road that goes by the home is great parking to access to the Appalachian Trail to enjoy some truly epic day hikes.
If you are looking for a place to unplug, unwind, and recharge - this is it!

We had the most wonderful time during our stay. It was by far the most relaxing trip we've ever been on. The house had absolutely everything . The view and sounds from the river were so peaceful . We made so many memories without even having to leave the property. We will definitely book again in the future.

Everyone in the family enjoyed their time there. Relaxing along the Piney River, quiet & beautiful. The accommodation were great too.

The setting of this house right next to the Piney River is what really makes it! The Adirondack chairs on the deck were perfect for enjoying the sights and sounds of the bubbling water, and there were many butterflies to see while we were there.
The kitchen had pots, utensils, plates, and glasses, and we made all our meals with the food we'd brought which was a good thing since
the two closest general stores were closed. We were able to get cell service with 15-20 minute-drives from the house (to check on aging parents).
The HVAC is turned off when guests leave at this time of year so the house smelled quite musty when we arrived. It took almost 24 hours to get most of the mustiness cleared.
The listing reported a calling card would be by the local-calls-only phone but it was not there. Without cell service, we couldn't have contacted the owners if we'd needed them (their contact numbers were an area code different than the house's landline.) Perhaps specific instructions on where to drive for cell service would have eased our minds.
We would definitely consider this destination again if the HVAC was left on between guest visits.

My family and I absolutely love this property. We have been going at least once a year for the last three years. It truly feels like home every time we walk in the door. The owner is incredible and so easy to work with. The only thing I have ever had an issue with in this home is the cleanliness. The cleaning person could pay a little more attention to detail but all in all it is a fabulous place and I will definitely stay there again.

We enjoyed this cabin immensely. Beds were comfortable and the amenities were plentiful. This cabin does not have wifi or cell service so be prepared. We were delighted to be "unplugged" for a few days, but just make sure you come prepared with directions for things to do and the sites you want to see. The owners have provided some in their instructions binder. The small babbling river was an awesome treat to relax to, although the water is mountain cold which was refreshing. We had a blast and would choose this cozy place again!!

There was something for everyone here! My nephews, 8 and 6, loved the river and fished all day! We were nearby to other trails and blue mountain barrel house for outings, though there was no reason to leave this little slice of heaven.
The sleeping arrangements were perfect and the yard was well kept. We really enjoyed the river, a fire and games! We will definitely be coming back here for family gatherings!

This is a gorgeous property right on the river. The break from electronics was much needed and appreciated. The home had everything we needed. Even when the power unexpectedly went out, the generator kicked on which meant disruption to power. We will be sure to return!

Peaceful Escape
Spent nearly a week at this magical peaceful place and quite honestly would have been perfectly happy to never leave. Actually enjoyed being "unplugged" for a bit and just enjoyed time with family and nature. Home is absolutely charming, comfortable, and well equipped. Highly recommend and hope to visit again!!

Serene Mountain House on River
Our group enjoyed the stay! Lots of space inside for a group, spacious deck, and amazing to have the river steps away! Loved the sound of the rushing river! No mobile service or WiFi meant we were able to relax. Subtracted 1 star because the house was dirty inside (bed sheets were clearly not washed and floor was dirty; we ended up washing all sheets and vacuuming).
