Magical little cottage in a great location.

This unit is best suited for those under 5'-10". The ceilings are 7' and doorways between rooms about 72". It's as quaint and cozy as it gets. Comfortable bed, cozy living room, tiny kitchen and no dining area (TV trays in the closet). With all its shortcomings we loved it!

We had such an incredible stay at the Half House -- it couldn't have been better! Bill was an excellent host, both with communication beforehand and with the amenities and condition of the property. The house itself is so charming and well catered for. We were two adults and one young child, and the set-up was perfect. We were able to sit outside one evening with warm temperatures and have a wonderfully cosy the next chillier night. The amenities were spot on and we didn't even use everything on offer, as everything and more was catered for. I would highly recommend this charming house for a wonderful getaway.

We thoroughly enjoyed our brief two night stay. Property was clean, considerately stocked with everything a family might need… bandaids, Benadryl, toms of pots and pans, various kitchen appliances, beach towels, lifejackets, coolers, etc. It was very clear that this host had thought long and hard about what was needed to make his guests feel welcomed and comfortable. This is obviously an incredibly unique home, location was ideal, close walking distance to the beach and downtown. Felt like a celebrity with so many people stopping by to view the home… but everyone was respectful of the property and our privacy. Five stars, thanks so much Bill!

The half house has always been a place l have wanted to stay since I was a kid. We have rented a few of the Earl Young houses on Park Avenue. The location of this one with the view and the charm offered a magical week in Charlevoix the beautiful, we had a full range of weather, allowing us to enjoy some cozy fires in the fireplace. With John Cross fish nearby, Thursdays farmers market downtown, That French place, and Hardwood, we had some incredible meals. So many fabulous walks from this great location, Beautiful sunsets and amazing swims down at the beach. There is always the flow of mushroom house tours, though this does not bother me as I understand the charm and interest in these magnificent structures. This tiny quaint little gem of a cottage had all the amenities and we had a divine time with our stay. Thank you.

We loved the house nice and cozy. Not far from beach or downtown. House was exactly like the host said. No surprises when we arrived.

My parents loved staying here and learning all about the area and Earl Young homes! Both said it was amazing which is awesome because they rarely agree on much. Thanks so much highly recommended to anyone else interested in architecture and history in Charlevoix

Staying at the Half House feels like being in a fairy tale. We enjoyed all the vintage touches, cozy feel, and location—the nearby lake and historic neighborhood were all we needed to unwind. This little place is truly a welcome break from the bland sameness of hotels.

I lived in Charlevoix for one summer during college, a few blocks away from Park Avenue and always loved going by the Hobbit houses. I came back to MI after living in CA for many years to show off this beautiful part of the state and this wonderful town to my husband and daughters. I was not disappointed. Staying in the Half House topped off the experience! Despite its tiny size, it is well furnished with everything you might need - with whimsical knick knacks scattered throughout adding to its charm. Previous reviews prepared me for the tour buses going by and the trick to finding the second bedroom (behind a closet door!). One caveat, the attic bedroom was a little cramped for my 2 adult daughters, but the setting and proximity to the Lake and town was worth it. And being able to leave without doing a million things to get it ready for housekeepers was a bonus, especially since checkout is at 10am. That would be the only thing I would change - to 11am. Even so, I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Very nice place to stay and interesting history to experience. Although the house is small it had all the amenities to make your stay perfect. Hope to return soon.

Our little family of three (my partner, myself, and our 2.5 year old child) thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We used a pack-and-play upstairs and our child slept beautifully.
We appreciated the many amenities and, honestly, you won't find a better location than this. Walk down the hill and you're at a playground and the beach. Or walk 5 minutes and you're in the heart of downtown Charlevoix.
Note for the really tall people out there: the ceilings are lower than average, so if you're over 6' 2" it might feel cramped.
We were thoroughly charmed by the place and look forward to staying here again in the future. It was great!

Weekend trip with my daughter. We loved the downtown location and could walk to shops and restaurants. The house had such charm and we got a kick out of seeing the house we were in on the front cover of several mushroom house books in the local stores.

Everything about the stay was excellent. From the check in process to the location and the overall stay.

My family and I had a wonderful time in the Half Hobbit House! It was the perfect size for a family of 3 (two adults and a 2.5 year old). It was only three blocks from downtown Charlevoix and a block from the beach. We enjoyed the evenings watching the sunset from the unobstructed view. Don’t miss out on this home!

Architectural wonder was Half House. Low ceilings, narrow hallway & a secret bedroom that relieved us thinking we’d be sharing the bed. The pathway to the house is challenging for those with mobility issues . The view of Lake Michigan sunsets were spectacular! A GREAT location in Charlivoix

The coziness of this fairytale home is without compare. Perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, this hobbit house is within walking distance of all downtown Charlevoix has to offer along with easy access to parks and beaches. I adored staying here and look forward to the opportunity to do so again.

It was a charming stay in this historic home. The view of Lake Michigan was spectacular and not to be missed. We are hoping to return to this one of a kind house.

My friend and I stayed for a girls' weekend and it was the perfect, cozy space. It was very clean and comfortable - and very cute. We enjoyed all the provided entertainment, the views of Lake Michigan (right across the street!) and the easy walk into town (less than ten minutes). We would definitely stay here again.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Half House. Such a special place to stay and the view is incredible. We sat in the recliners and watched the beautiful sunset right from the living room. Had a sense of calm just being there. The only thing that I would critique is that we felt like the home needed a little TLC. It's such an incredible part of Michigan history and so unique but the inside needs a little spruce up and some fresh paint. Would it stop me from visiting again? Absolutely not.
Outside of the home itself, the owner Bill is one of the best hosts I've ever worked with. He always responded to my message quickly even if they weren't an "emergency" He was very kind and understanding. He worked with me to get the best stay possible even when some problems came up on my end. Long story short, treat yourself to a stay at this one of a kind home with an incredible host. It'll be an experience you never forget.

Our family of four had a wonderful stay at the Hobbit House! Such a great treat for our young children... the house was the stuff of dreams and it was within a block of the beach/park/library. We will be back as often as we can afford it! A special treat!

We loved the history of The Half house. It was a lovely neighborhood within a block of Lake Mi and a few blocks from downtown Charlevoix. We loved learning about Earl Young’s mushroom houses. Thank you for a delightful stay.😊

We loved our two-night stay in Half House, a lovely little mushroom house in Charlevoix. Our adult daughter enjoyed sleeping in the attic bedroom. The house has a beautiful view of Lake Michigan from the picture window of the living room. It's located very close to downtown Charlevoix, with easy access to drive up to Petoskey and Harbor Springs. We didn't make a fire, but the stone fireplace dominates the living room. The kitchen is well-equpped. The master bed is comfortable. We were very pleased.

Historical building. Great location. Beautiful view of Lake Michigan. Walking distance to restaurants.

I loved our stay. The view of the water from the front room is beautiful. It looks s such a cute house and very comfortable. It was chilly when we were there so we drove to town and around the historic neighborhood which we could have walked if warmer. My 6 foot tall husband fit in very well.

The Mushroom house is older, but I think that’s part of the charm! We had everything we needed for a cozy weekend stay. Our kids thought the house was the coolest house they’d ever seen and loved the little secret upstairs bedroom.

We were looking for a place with a wood burning fireplace close to hiking and a restaurant. WOW we found so much more! The history and reality of Earl Young’s mushroom houses was a wonderful surprise. This rental was comfy and cozy and clean. Definitely would recommend. Charlevoix is full of fine dining, we had many great meals. Fisherman Island State Park is an amazing place for outdoor adventure.

The property was beautiful and unique. Perfect for our Sister’s weekend. Great views of the Lake and just a lovely in the winter.

Such a cute, cozy Hobbit house . . . even when a couple days were blustery cold outside. On those days we watched the white-capped waves break on the shoreline through picture window from the living room. The theater, the restaurant, the grocery store were all in walking distance from the house. And four ski areas were only a short drive away. It definitely lived up to my expectations.

This is a charming little home with all the amenities one could need (minus a dining room). The wood burning fireplace was our favorite. Our experience was excellent from the easy check in process to the communication with the property owner/manager. We’ve put this home on top of the list for places to stay in Charlevoix and hope to visit again soon.

We just enjoyed our third or fourth visit to this property. In my experience, VRBO's are exactly as they appear in the pictures. In this case, the pictures do not do it justice. It's just so cute! It is very clean and has everything you could possibly need. The beach is right across the street and even though we were there in January, the lake is always beautiful. The location is perfect to walk to town to visit the shops and restaurants. Although we had hoped to ski, the lack of snow prevented that but we found many other things to do in the area. Do not hesitate to book this property!

We love this place. It’s charming and cozy with a wood burning fireplace, and the front window looks out on Lake Michigan. It’s our fall getaway. We have been going every year for about 7 years.

My husband and I stayed in the half house for our anniversary trip and it was perfect for us! Yes, it's small and cozy, but it was a great home base for short day trips. We loved coming back and relaxing in the cute living room and enjoying a fire. Loved the easy checkout process!

Such a cozy beautiful stay, but is a tourist attraction, I wish it had a one way screen for the front window where you can see out but the tourist cannot see you sitting there trying to enjoy the view, its offputting and uncomfortable.

This house is even more charming than the pictures show. It was a perfect place for a long weekend for two people. Although it was cold, rainy and snowy while we were there, the fireplace kept this sweet little cottage cozy. Everything you can think of that you might need is provided in this little space. We highly recommend taking the Mushroom House Tour in the GEM car with Edith and the Charlevoix Haunted History walking tour with Annie. Visit the Weathervane for dinner and Smoke on the Water for breakfast. We are hoping to return to the Half House sometime in the near future!
