The property was plenty big for our party of eight. There were spots for all of us to have time to ourselves after a day of sightseeing or spending time at the beach. Though it is far from the Kona sights, we didn't mind. There is plenty to see and do in Hilo. Volcanoes National Park is only about an hour away as is Hapuna Beach for snorkeling. The zoo in Hilo is well-kept, beautiful, and free! We had a wonderful time celebrating college graduations on this beautiful property.

Hale hamakua was a nice place to stay during the Merrie Monarch week. It's a lengthy drive but worth the drive. Home is clean, maintained and like the solitude away from town. Definitely stay again.

This property is quite out of the way, far from the bustle of Hilo but close enough to make trips into town easy. We found it to be a good home base for seeing all that the Big Island has to offer. The property’s outdoor spaces are absolutely wonderful! We loved watching birds, whales, and chickens while our young boys ran around the back yard. We like to cook and the kitchen had just enough to enable us to make whatever we wanted. Everything was clean and functional, and the supply of beach chairs, snorkels, flippers, boogie board, and cooler were much appreciated for our family trips to the beach. We would stay again for sure.

A very spacious house that accommodated 9 of us. We chose this location for a family gathering because we live on opposite sides of the world; coming from the Midwest in the U.S. to Japan. Peaceful view on a bluff with a nice outdoor deck. Quiet setting. Lots of outdoor beauty to explore. Volcanos, waterfalls, incredible ocean shores and even an area with hot pools. About 20 minutes to Hilo.

We enjoyed our stay at Hale Hamakua. The view and grounds were beautiful. We loved the birds and geckos. We had two couples and the two beds we used were comfortable, and we appreciated the beach towels, chairs, and ice chest (although we could have used a smaller one...). The labeled light switches were a nice touch. The kitchen had everything we needed as far as cookware and dinnerware although it would have been nice to have a few spices available. The main road was close, but the road noise was minimal. We would stay here again!

Our family of 6--4 adults and 2 teenagers--enjoyed staying at this house in early July 2023. Our stay was delightful. The house was clean, well equipped, and ideal for our needs. It was so nice being able to look out at any time of day and seeing the ocean and beautiful clouds in a deep blue sky. It was fun watching geckos on the outside of the house. We used the television only once, to watch videos we had captured while snorkeling with green sea turtles. There is very limited access to groceries nearby, but Hilo was close enough that we could pick up anything we needed, usually while traveling to our many destinations on the island. It was nice having access to a washer and dryer. The kitchen contained all the tools we needed to prepare our meals, so we ate very well (probably too well). When I asked how everyone like the house, they all said it was ideal and they would like to return someday. I fully agree.

The property was clean, if a bit too well-used. Views were wonderful and ocean-oriented. Rooms were airy and bright. Geckos, frogs, and birds were an added gift!

Perfect for our family vacation!
This house was such a lovely welcome for us on our first trip to Hawaii! The house was spotless (our most important criteria) and provided everything we needed for a fantastic week, including beach towels and a cooler. Plus, the view from the back deck is breathtaking! I could have stayed out there all week except that there are so many things to do on the big island. Mahalo for an unforgettable vacation!

We loved the location of this house. It's close to Hilo, but still only a short drive to some great snorkeling locations on the Kona side. There are some great hikes just a few minutes away. The house is well maintained and clean, and the beds are comfy. We loved the privacy of the property! Great Hosts! Mahalo!

This is a nice home with a great view of the ocean. We enjoyed sitting on the deck, feeling the ocean breeze, and watching the ocean. It's not too far from Hilo, but far enough that you feel you're out in the countryside. There is a general store close by if you need to pick up a few things, otherwise Hilo is about 20 minutes away with nice local restaurants and big box stores. We really enjoyed they stay here. The owners/managers of the property are very nice and very accommodating.

Secluded Oasis
This property is exactly as it's described. It is outside of town (Hilo) by a bit but we knew this going in. The views are spectacular and if you love the sounds of nature this place is for you. The directions are spot on and check in was very easy. The house is perfectly appointed and we loved having the use of beach chairs, boogie boards and the beach umbrella. I would highly recommend this place for groups and families!

Beautiful getaway on Haumakua coast
This house was exactly as advertised. A beautiful 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home with a large lanai spanning the entire back of the house with amazing ocean views from the bluff. It is about 30 minutes from Hilo so it is a perfect midpoint to see the entire Hilo side of the island, about 1 hour to Volcanoes National Park and about 1.5 hours to the Kohala Coast. The island manager Jeanna was excellent and answered all of our questions. It felt like we were actually living in Hawaii as it was a house in a small cul-de-sac. However, we never heard our neighbors and because of the vegetation, you can't see them. The only neighbors we could see were the wildlife--the adorable geckos, birds (with the occasional chickens) and the coqui frogs (some people complain about them because they whistle at night, honestly not much louder that crickets that we hear in the summer).

Great Place, clean, quiet and a great value
Nice large house with very nice large back deck. Wide open view of the Pacific ocean. Large Kitchen. Dated but adequate bathrooms. Would easily accommodate 6 people for only three of us it provided lots of living space.
The property is very quiet, did not hear anything from our two neighbors.
Only about 20 minutes or so to Hilo. Good "base of operations" for our explorations of the big island.
Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful experience at this property. We were there with our three adult children and their partners for a total of eight adults. The kitchen was well equipped, there was an extra table so that the eight of us could all sit down to dinner together. The property was beautiful and well maintained, the house was clean and nicely decorated. The lanai was amazing and the sunrise was worth getting up early!
The only complaint was that the 4th bedroom was only a single room and no air conditioning and no screen, so one of the couples had to sleep on the pull out in the tv room. Not a big inconvenience as the pull out was comfortable but it’s important to know that the fourth bedroom is not set up for a couple.
Overall, an excellent experience that we would highly recommend!

Amazing view, perfect getaway!
We checked in late (about 9 PM) and it was dark, so we were so excited to see the views the next morning. We were not disappointed when we woke up! Amazing views in every direction!!! Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Hilo, this home is exactly as described - comfortable, peaceful and relaxing. This is a fully equipped house that has everything you need to enjoy your vacation so you don’t need to go shopping before you arrive. There is a resident chicken (who we named “Bart”) which we got a real kick out of seeing each day when we went outside. There are also resident geckos which again we got a real kick out of spending our vacation with!
The property manager is absolutely A++. We are kind of wimpy mainlanders and are used to AC so we did book this home because it had air-conditioning for sleeping (and for the views!). We discovered that the master bedroom air conditioner was not working when we arrived so we sent a text to the property manager Jeana. She got back to us within minutes and had it inspected and replaced literally within a few waking hours. It is clear the owners love this home and want to share it with their guests, and the property managers are the top notch.
Mahalo for an amazing vacation!

Our group of four adults found the house to be comfortable. We cooked most of our meals at the house and found that it had what we needed in regard to pots and pans etc. The main disappointment in that regard was the lack of a good gas BBQ (although there is a small grill).

Home is beautiful. The views are worth a million dollars. Nice quite area. The only thing we would recommend is air conditioning. There were three rooms with window air conditioners but living room an kitchen and 2 living room were very hot during daytime. Home is furnished with everything you need to make the stay more enjoyable. We will recommend this home to others. We gave 4 stars only because of no central air in the home.

Hale Hamakua is a beautiful home with well landscaped grounds. Although the home has limited AC, opening the windows to allow the cooler breezes in made it comfortable. The AC was in 3 of the 4 rooms and provided a comfortable nights sleep. We got in late and had no idea of the views until the following morning. Wow, views were amazing. Not only from the lanai, but from two bedrooms and main living space. Home was beautifully decorated and had beach gear for us to use. This home is in the country, so expect gekkos inside and outside the home. That’s country living. I would absolutely stay here again.

Hale Hamakua - Beautiful home and fantastic views.
This property exceeded my expectations. We got in late at night and I woke up before the sun came up so that I could watch the sunrise and get some pictures. The view was breathtaking and the grounds and landscape impeccable.
This home is in the country, please expect that you will see gekkos, inside and out. I quickly became fascinated by them and took a lot of pictures. Even pics of baby gekkos hanging out in the ti leaves. Also heard Kokee frogs in the evening.
The entire family enjoyed this home. Mahalo

Beautifully Private and Tranquil
We loved our stay in this home! The property and view is spectacular, we loved the chicken who visited us every morning and our many gecko roommates! We spent every morning outside enjoying the sunrise with our coffee and frequently woke up in the middle of the night to check out the amazing view of the stars! The property was stocked with everything you could want and then some; we were very impressed with everything in the kitchen! The location is a bit out of the way, so everything is at 20 minutes away, but we were always happy to come home in the evening after a day of being out and about to relax on the deck and enjoy the view. I think my only critique would be that while the a/c in the bedroom is effective, it's loud. Surprisingly it didn't keep us up, but we also couldn't hear all the birds and frogs while it was on, which was a bummer, but we appreciated the cool air! Overall we really loved our stay here and will miss it on our departure.

Location and View are the primary features of Hale Hamakua. We all enjoyed waking up to the sunrise and having that early morning cup of coffee or tea on the lanai. Hilo was an easy 20 minute ride away. I think the house could use a maintenance update. Several screen sliders need to be repaired or replaced. Some windows lacked screens and could not be opened. The covers to old A/C units are rusty and unsightly and should be removed. Some furniture could be updated. Kitchen seemed reasonably equipped. Representative from the property management company was accessible before we arrived in Hawaii and during our stay. This property has a lot of potential because of the view and I would stay there again if the condition of the property, but the condition of the property could be improved. I would recommend to a friend, based on the same criteria.

Difficult to find the road to the house, not well marked. Extremely difficult to identify the turn to the home at night or in inclement weather.Upon entering there was a musty smell. Turned on the ceiling fans to circulate the air. Only 2 were capable of multiple speeds the rest were stuck on low speed. Opened the first patio door and the screen door fell out. This happened with each patio door. Not all of the windows had screens and some were not able to open due to needed repairs orr replacement. Found excremental on the floors from geckos presumably. Found hair on all of the dish towels in the kitchen. Also found hairr on bath towels. When reaching into the closet to grab a towel in the master bath. My hand hit something. It was an outlet just hanging out. The master bath shower leaked water all over the floor, almost fell when getting out. The internet coverage cannot handle streaming and cell phone coverage is poor at best. While everything in the house worked. The house overall in my opinion needed lots of TLC. I would not recommend this location to anyone who enjoys their technology or for a family. It is better suited for adults who wish to unplug. Be aware you may have to haul away your own rubbish at the end of your stay. Also keep in mind this house is 20 miles from Hilo and about 26 miles from the Hilo Airport.
