About this villa rental
CIN: HSR24-000170
Villa Tripoli is located three kilometers from the medieval walled village of Porano and only 15 minutes away from Orvieto. Villa Tripoli’s spacious, century-old country home and cottage have been carefully restored with quality materials, attention to detail and an artistic eye. The buildings and large private swimming pool are set on four acres surrounded by rolling agricultural and forest land that yield lovely vistas and complete privacy. Visitors have exclusive use of the property during their stay at Villa Tripoli. What sets Villa Tripoli apart is its embracing peace and tranquility. Nestled into a pastoral countryside, yet close to the historic, artistic and cultural sites of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio, Villa Tripoli offers the best of all worlds.
HOUSE
The stone house retains original features characteristic of an old Umbrian country home (wood beamed ceilings, stone fireplaces, terra-cotta floors), yet has unusually large and spacious rooms, is flooded with light and is fully equipped with modern conveniences (wifi, cable TV, DVD/CD player, iPod docking station). The house is furnished with a harmonious mix of Italian and Asian antiques, ethnic art, and contemporary furnishings.
The very large living room is distinguished by a triple vault ceiling, magnificent stone fireplace, quarter-grand piano, huge windows that afford sweeping views over the surrounding landscape, and French doors opening onto a portico, or covered terrace. The large dining room has a table and chairs for ten and a working fireplace. The modern kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line appliances - large refrigerator, double sink, oven, microwave and stove. A full bathroom and utility room are also located on the ground floor. The portico, accessed from both the dining room and living room, offers delightful dining al fresco from spring through mid-autumn.
Four bedrooms and three full baths are located upstairs. The large master bedroom (queen sized bed) and another bedroom (queen-sized bed that can be made into twin beds) are located at the east end of the house. They share a closet-lined hall and a large bathroom with a shower, separate bathtub, double sink and toilet. A set of doors provides these rooms extra privacy. The third bedroom (with a king-sized bed that can be made into large twin beds) is located in the middle of the house. Its en-suite bathroom has a shower, two sinks, toilet and a charming oval window. The fourth bedroom (with a queen-sized bed that can be made into twin beds) is located at the west end of the house. The room and its adjoining private bathroom (with a shower, separate bathtub, sink and toilet) are also set off from the main hallway by a set of doors for privacy.
COTTAGE
The stone cottage, located between the house and pool, is an enchanting, self-contained living space. The open-plan ground floor contains a living room, dining room and kitchen dishwasher). A full bathroom (with shower) is located off of this room. With one wall essentially of glass, the cottage is suffused with light. It has a working fireplace and is equipped with wifi, a television and CD/DVD player. A graceful cantilevered stone staircase ascends to a large sleeping loft with a queen-sized bed.
POOL AND GROUNDS
The large pool (14.5 x 4.5 m) has wide open views of the surrounding rural landscape but has complete privacy. A stone terrace and built-in stone benches running along one side of the pool, make for a perfect place to spend a day off from sightseeing or to watch the sun set over the hills with a glass of prosecco in hand. Cushions for the benches and lawn chairs are provided for guests’ use. A patio in front of the cottage and in front of the pool, set up with an umbrella, table and chairs, makes another pleasant spot for outdoor meals. The grounds of the property have expansive and lush lawns, flower beds and perennial borders, an herb garden, and olive and fruit orchards. The walls of the house and cottage are covered with fragrant climbing roses, jasmine and clematis.

The property is beautiful, overlooking the Italian countryside. The stone villa, pool, flowers, herb garden, olive grove and fruit trees gave the perfect setting. We had 10 friends and family, 7 of our kids in their early 20s, and the rest of us old friends. We loved having the space to cook huge family meals and dine in the lovely villa or in the outdoor spaces. We bought fresh pasta from the pasta shop in Orvieto that was recommended by the host and also went to the Saturday morning farmers market to buy produce and all made the meals more special. We loved the recommendations by the host that really enhanced our experience. Especially the four hour lunch at La Locanda di Colle Ombroso, Janis. It was amazing! We also loved the wine, cheese and charcuterie tasting a the winery Madonna Dei Latte, and goat cheese tasting at Fattoria Il Secondo. We went to the Porano Pizzeria Claudio, several times and loved the waiter, Francesco and all their staff. The little town of Porano cannot be more charming, there was a music festival while we were there on June 27th-30th. It was so much fun. The people could not be more friendly. We did even have a friend come into town on the train late at night and was able to take a taxi to the villa! We were not sure this would work, but it is good to know it is an option. Many of our kids extended their stay with us because they loved it so much. This place was magical for us all and not a bad moment. It was nice to be able to relax

Six of us -- all seasoned global travelers -- had a memorable holiday at Villa Tripoli. Everything was absolutely perfect, ranging from setting to bedding to pool to art to, well, you name it. Fantastic experience.

Spent two fabulous weeks at Villa Tripoli. Beautiful villa, amazing grounds, very peaceful and close to many places to visit. Would highly recommend and definitely plan to go back!

It was perfect for our family trip that included 8 of us from 3 years old to 75. Tons to do in the area. The Villa is perfect for relaxation whether around the pool or in the shade of the portico. Even my gourmet cooking brother in law found everything he needed in the kitchen.

Villa Tripoli was everything we had hoped for in an Italian villa vacation. The main house, cottage, pool, and grounds are gorgeous inside and out and are all impeccably cared for. Architecture, decor, and artwork from around the world distinguish the villa, while furnishings and old-world finishes make it comfy and cozy. The setting is idyllic, tucked amongst the beautiful rolling Umbrian hills planted with olive trees and hazelnut orchards (which were being harvested during our stay in September). Magnificent Orvieto is a short drive from Villa Tripoli, and we made fun day trips from there to see Civita, Bolsena, Montepulciano and Siena. Susan has outfitted her property with every amenity and all the comforts of home. Her packet of notes was full of invaluable information for logistics, activities, dining, and planning for all of our outings. Shout outs to friendly local Trattoria da Claudio in Porano, Chef Lorenzo’s cooking class in Baschi (amazing and such fun), Dario’s Contrada tour in Siena, and Palazzone wine tasting in Orvieto. Emanuela made us feel very welcome upon arrival at Villa Tripoli, and had our stay been a bit longer, we would definitely have arranged a tour and wine-tasting adventure with her. We will highly recommend Villa Tripoli to family and friends for future travel to Italy!

We had the most amazing week at villa Tripoli as a multi generational family who all loved it! The villa is huge and beautifully designed with a separate guest house by the pool. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped and the house very comfortable. The property manager Emanuela was also very friendly and helpful.
The owner Susan put us in touch with a local chef called Giulia who came to the house and cooked us a lovely meal I would highly recommend.
The high points were definitely the grounds, the house, the pool and the incredible views.
The only things to note is the access is a little tricky as it’s down a very bumpy track but this does make it very remote and peaceful. And also we didn’t need to use the pool house to sleep in as we had enough bedrooms in the house but there are no blinds or curtains in there so if you are sleeping there maybe bring some eye masks!
We will definitely return!

A lovely villa in a gorgeous setting
We had an absolutely wonderful vacation at Villa Tripoli. The villa is what everyone hopes an Italian vacation villa will be. The house has all the Italian architectural charm for which one could wish, but also modern utilities. We were delighted to have 5 full bathrooms and modern kitchen appliances. The house is roomy and extremely comfortable. The surrounding countryside is truly lovely.
We stayed for 5 weeks and we wish we could have stayed longer. Various family members and friends came and went, and each one arrived with the same initial comment: "Wow! This place is amazing!" There are so many wonderful places to see and things to do in the areas near the villa. We loved Orvieto, Todi, Speleto, Bolsena, Pitigliono, and the smaller, less-touristy hill towns. Susan's "Notes on Villa Tripoli" proved invaluable with recommendations for restaurants, activities, and shopping. We especially liked the family restaurant in Porano, Trattoria and Pizzeria da Claudio, where we dined often and always enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and the good food. We also liked the Trattoria del Conte on the road to Lake Bolsena. We also had catering done by Simona for several dinners, and those dinners were just terrific.
Emanuela, the House Manager when Susan was away, was terrific. She is so friendly and did everything she could to make us feel welcome and comfortable. She is a Certified Tour Guide, and she gave us a great tour of Orvieto and also of Bolsena. She also arranged for other colleagues to give us tours of Palazzo Farnese, Villa Lante, Todi, and Montefalco. All the guides were wonderful.
I realize that I am running out of superlatives as I am writing, but I just can't say enough about this very special place. Thank you, Susan and Emanuela! We hope we can be back soon.

We were six close friends coming to Italy for a 50th college reunion where we all met. Before heading to Roma we wanted to relax a bit at a Villa in Umbria. Villa Tripoli exceeded our expectations!! The owner graciously kept the pool open for us, even though it was October! Her numerous recommendations for travel ideas, shopping, in home chefs were excellent. If you rent this villa, take the time to read Susan's Notes on Villa Tripoli. Hopefully we will return!!

This place is a dream come true
We were a group of 10 with family and friends, age range from 24 to 76. We all loved this place. The house is most beautiful, with extraordinary pieces of art and attention paid to all details from kitchen to bedrooms, and from inside the house to the outside landscape, pool, olive trees and garden. It really has everything you need.
We enjoyed barbeques at the veranda, and luckily had musicians around who could play the piano in the living room.
No doubt in the August warm weather our favourite place was the stunning pool. The pool water is just right for refreshing, and the pool area is perfect for lazy sun bathing or playing games or even doing some training and stretching by some early birds.
We visited many places around from Bolsena lake to wine tasting in Montepulcano and of course visited old Orivieto and Bagnoregio...etc... there are so many beautiful places to see nearby. Yet we were always eager to drive back to the house and take a dip in the pool and just relax and enjoy the beautiful landscape.
In summary: this was a dream come true. The place is just amazing. We could not have had better holidays. Big thanks to Susan the owner, she has a true eye for beauty, style and art.

We loved this house!
We were a 2 family party including (older) teens.
The house is stunning. Simple with modern facilities, but original features and interesting art work. It is spacious, immaculate and characterful.
The gardens and pool are stunning too. Beautifully kept, with lawns, lavender, agapanthus. Plenty of shady (or sunny) spots to sit and read...or snooze...or just enjoy. With views across rolling hills.
We didn’t travel far. Enjoying Porano and Orvieto, long lunches, fantastic local wines, the gardens and a lot of quiet and not so quiet fun in the pool.
We hope to be back! Thank you Susan and Emanuela.

Villa Tripoli
Upon arriving at the gate to Villa Tripoli I felt I had just stepped into the past. Upon entering the front door, I felt I had just stepped into the pages of Architectural Digest. This gorgeous stone home began life as a country farmhouse near Orvieto, Italy, in 1912. It, and the adjoining stone barn, was acquired by its current owner over ten years ago in a state of near ruin and lovingly restored into the masterpiece it is today.
The owner lived in Rome for 40 years and traveled extensively worldwide, including Africa and Asia. The house is filled with museum quality art, furniture, rugs and ceramics beautifully displayed on custom built shelves. The main house has four spacious bedrooms and three and a half baths. The barn is now a separate guest accommodation with its own living room, bath and kitchenette looking out on the swimming pool and patio.
Our party of 10 spent two weeks in this paradise enjoying the surrounding countryside, the nearby village of Parano and the Town of Orvieto, one of the most historic and lovely towns in Italy. We did most of our cooking in the generously equipped kitchen and enjoyed nightly dinners in the spacious dining room. The large living room even has a piano, and several of our party played, so we had our own music.
Prior to our visit we received on-line a 40 page document giving detailed information about every aspect of the home, how various things worked, contact information, and best of all, recommendations for all the wonderful nearby places to visit and people to meet. Without any effort, we became “in the know” locals able to set up a cheese tasting at a nearby goat farm, a wine tasting at a family owned winery built atop ancient Etruscan tunnels, a guided tour to an Etruscan tomb complete with original frescoes, a cooking lesson at the farm of a talented local chef, etc. Without this information we could never have experienced Italy in this way.
Villa Tripoli is a dream destination. I will cherish it in my memory.

Italian Paradise
Villa Tripoli is paradise on earth & Susan, the Villa owner & hostess, has brought heaven here piecemeal from her years of travel around the world. Upon arrival, I was stunned by the beautifully appointed, renovated farmhouse & guesthouse. It felt decadent to experience this much luxury in the midst of secluded countryside, rosemary & lavender bushes & olive groves, but that's what makes the villa unique. It's beautiful, zen-like pool, multiple patios, walnut trees, spacious 5-star bedrooms & bathrooms, enormous arching windows letting in radiant sunsets, fully stocked chef's kitchen, indoor & outdoor banquet tables.... this is the perfect place to come in the mood for celebration with family or friends, or just to splurge & give yourself & your romantic partner a full-on, unforgettable Italian pleasure experience.

This villa really is a delight and nothing disappoints, if anything the lovely pictures can't do it justice. If we were just two, I'd have been very happy with the "cottage" in the garden! The house itself is a handsome property, sitting comfortably in its surroundings, with an impressive double height hallway and lovely vaulted ceiling in the sitting room. We had one bedroom more than we needed and every room was so nice, we ended up not using what was supposed to be the "master bedroom". The views are stunning and it was a treat to wake up early and open the shutters, to soak up the view from bed. The gardens and swimming pool area are lovely, well tended with rustic charm and delicious smells from the rosemary hedges. The trees provide plenty of shade all day and the stone benches make a lovely spot to read and relax. Susan, the owner, has thought of everything and the household cupboards have all that you could possibly need - all neatly marked up in labelled boxes for easy searching. The house was scrupulously clean, with nice touches of toiletries and a generous welcome hamper. Susan has put together a comprehensive "dossier", again with everything that you need. From excellent restaurant recommendations, to places to see and hidden gems like a fresh pasta shop that you'd never find on your own. Complete with opening times, so you can navigate the seemingly random nature of an Italian shopping experience! Orvieto and the surrounding area is stunning. Assisi was well worth the drive (c. 90 mins), as was the Parco di Mostri in Bomazo (c.50 mins), a 16th century garden with wonderful and bizarre stone sculptures. What an amazing villa and a thoughtful host, I would thoroughly recommend and we will definitely return.

Everything good you can imagine in an Umbrian Villa ... and then some..
We rented Villa Tripoli for a family reunion centered around our niece's participation in a music festival nearby. Six older generation and two millenials all fit perfectly comfortably in the spacious, well-appointed rooms and comfortable beds. High points: THE POOL! (We were there in a heat wave and the pool and the thick stone walls more than made up for lack of central AC). We quickly mastered the timing of opening and closing the Villa's windows and doors to beat the heat. It became a pleasant practice in the day's gentle routine and merged us into the moods of the countryside. THE KITCHEN! beautifully appointed with some gadgets I'd never seen before. A great, open, welcoming space for all-hands-on-deck cooking and food prep. THE PORTICO! Evening meals and relaxing under the outdoor dining area. Virtually no bugs, (thanks to the many small friendly lizards on the Villa walls) and just the place to relax, talk, drink wine after dinner, before an evening swim. EMANUELA! , who greeted us and showed us around initially, was also very available and quick to help with a minor glitch with the wifi. CATERED DINNERS BY SIMONA! Simona and her staff were professional, cheerful, fun and made two fantastic meals. ORVIETO CLASSICO! Took six bottles back in my luggage.
The location is both wonderfully secluded and yet easy to strike out from for groceries in Orvieto and small towns nearby. This place met and exceeded all of our expectations. Thanks to Suey and everyone involved.

Villa Tripoli is a wonderful home set in the countryside just outside Orvieto. The Villa is immaculate and beautifully decorated and has everything you need for a magical holiday. The bedrooms are large and airy, the bathrooms the same. The kitchen is a pleasure to cook in and the lounge, with the piano, is a great place to sit and while away the hours. The outside spaces are also fantastic, with beautiful gardens, outdoor sitting and eating areas, and the pool house with its own kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The owner, Susan Braatz, has a wealth of information ready for her guests and we took full advantage of her recommendations. We arranged with Asunta to prepare two meals, which were made with much love and a pleasure to eat; we arranged with Simona of Sagraincasa to come and give us a cooking class in the villa, which was one of the highlights of the week; and we also arranged a tour of Orvieto with Emanuela, who was so knowledgeable and friendly. Emanuela was also Susan’s representative for the villa, and her help and local knowledge were very much appreciated. A truly exceptional place with lovely local people and in a great part of Italy.

Amazing days - magic place
We actually had one of our greatest, happiest and most wonderful weeks ever - celebrating my birthday with family and friends at Villa Tripoli. Whoever arrived at the house fell in love with it instantly and did not want to leave it anymore. The garden, the surrounding, the pool, the rooms, the interior design, the whole equipment of the house is just all you need to have a perfect time together with your loved ones. Thank you for maintaining this amazing and magic place, Susan, we will definitely come back!!

Fantastic week in Umbria with 2 families
Our stay in Susan's villa with a group of 10 (4 adults, 6 children) was outstanding from start to finish. Susan gave us a very warm welcome and a detailed tour of the house. Indoors, the house is very beautifully decorated, with an eye for detail. Outdoors, we really enjoyed the large pool and the quiet surroundings. All together, villa Tripoli is a unique setting in a beautiful landscape. A perfect place to relax, but also a perfect starting point to explore Umbria.

Wonderful stay at Villa Tripoli
We enjoyed a wonderful week at Villa Tripoli sharing the property with our parents and 4 children; The setting was beautiful and the surrounding countryside outstanding, making for a peaceful and undisturbed week. The Villa had absolutely everything we needed and Susan was the perfect host, greeting us on our first evening (after a late arrival) and arranging for a lovely dinner to be ready for us.
If you are looking for a relaxing week in wonderful surroundings then we would highly recommend Villa Tripoli; it is also within easy reach of shops (assuming you have a car) and local sights - we particularly enjoyed our day trip to Orvieto.

MAGICAL week in Umbria
As a 70th birthday celebration I invited my two sons and their families - including 4 grandsons ages 4 to 13 - for a week at Villa Tripoli. Of course we were excited by the photos but were not prepared for the exquisite beauty of the setting, the vibrant eclectic décor of the house, the perfect covered loggia where we eat nearly every meal and the sun-warned pool overlooking the rolling and just mowed hay fields.
Even the lack of air conditioning the last week of June was not a problem - I had just come from a week in Rome where the heat exhausted me - but the house stayed relatively cool and perfect for sleeping with the help of the large fans in every room. And anyone who suffered even the slightest immediately took a dip in the pool - before breakfast and after and at the end of the day.
The kitchen was fully stocked with everything a good chef needed to amaze us with wonderful meals - one of our group was just that person and although he had said he didn't want to cook during the trip he was so excited by the foods of Umbria and the kitchen that he cooked more often than not. Lucky us - and lucky us that the kitchen was so completely stocked.
Although we had intended to see more of the sites and did spend a wonderful morning in Orvieto with Emanuela, a great tour guide suggested by Susan, we found the beautiful silence combined with the intense buzzing of the bees in the lavender next to the guest house was so peaceful and rejuvenating that we stayed put more often than not.
It was with great sadness we all left for Venice on Saturday morning - Venice always beckons with its beauty and intrigue but this time its intensity was mitigated by the calm and intense beauty of Villa Tripoli we had just left.
Thank you Susan for restoring this wonderful place and sharing it! We hope to return.

Magical
Our stay in Villa Tripoli was truly amazing. We spent two weeks there together with our families and it was a huge hit both with the kids and the adults. The property is located in a very serene area and all of us just fell in love with it. Unlike many other villas we looked at renting, Villa Tripoli has a special vibe and a homey feeling (which made it very hard to leave). We also had the pleasure of hosting our wedding celebration at the villa together with both American and Swedish friends. All our guests were just blown away by the beauty of the place and Susan was so accommodating and nice. We are eternally grateful to her and her crew and we will surely carry this experience with us for the rest of our lives, and hope to return one day for more memories.

One of the Best Villa Rentals in Italy
We just returned from a two-week stay at beautiful Villa Tripoli. What a special home in a magical, private setting! The house, gardens and pool are gorgeous, and maintained impeccably. The level grounds were perfect for the children to run around, while the hydrangeas and local mix of fragrant flowers and herbs, were such a treat to wake up to.
The kitchen is well-equipped with everything we needed to cook gourmet meals, and the indoor and outdoor dining spaces were perfect. The bedrooms are all large, beautifully-decorated and comfy, and the huge bathrooms are unique to the rental market in Italy. The showers and tubs are large, water pressure is great and the natural light is amazing. The guest house is another great feature, and has strong internet as well. And the pool/setting is perfect.
Orvieto, Lake Bolsena, Sacro Bosco, Civita, and many other popular sites are close by and easy to get to. Baraonda, Porano's bar, has delicious coffee and cornetti, and is only 10 mins or less away.
Susan has thought about every detail in her home. She is the best host we have ever had (after renting villas in Italy for the past seven years), and goes above and beyond to make her guests welcome. I highly recommend this piece of paradise that she has been kind enough to sharen with us. Thank you for everything Susan!!

Perfect
Villa Tripoli is simply perfect. It is not your average rustic villa . Villa Tripoli sits in it's own perfectly maintained grounds and enjoys beautiful views. Inside the kitchen is extremely well equipped and the bathrooms are stunning. It is beautifully decorated throughout. The pool is amazing while the separate cottage provides excellent separate accommodation. Susan is just the best host ever. She was responsive from our first enquiry and provided invaluable information and help throughout our stay. It was an honour to stay in such a uniquely beautiful house in a stunning area of Italy.

Perfection.
This was our second time staying in Villa Tripoli - it is an amazingly beautiful and tranquil place. My wife, 4 kids (aged, 3, 6, 9 and 11), my sister and her husband stayed for a week in the height of summer. Often second visits can be disappointing (we had been there four years earlier), but certainly not in this case. Susan takes great pride in making the house perfect for her guests and the garden is stunning. The kids basically lived in the pool (in between trying to catch lizards and our trips to little nearby villages and towns). Unquestionable the best holiday house we have stayed in.

Fantastico!
We stayed at Villa Tripoli for two weeks and it was amazing. The photos don't do the house justice. The grounds, the furnishings and everything are top notch. Susan is a great host and is a trove of knowledge about the area. The first night we went for dinner at a farm just down the street that she recommended, young couple, all organic, outside under the stars, it was amazing! The proximity of the house is great there are so many things to see and places to visit, just a short drive away, but, you might not want to leave the grounds! We had a lot of people and everybody did their own thing during the day and then we had big dinners together at night, it was really fantastic.

A wonderful holiday
My husband, children and extended family enjoyed a marvelous holiday at villa Tripoli. A stunning setting in a much loved house, that feels more like a home than a holiday rental. The pool and gardens are equally beautiful. My only note of caution is that its not suitable for small mobile children (eg aged 1-3) who are liable to break things, and the pool is not fenced. My nephew was 8 months and not crawling, and my children are 4,7,10 so fine - they loved the pool, chasing lizards and playing table tennis. My parents enjoyed cycling into Porano down the track rather than taking the car, and we all made use of the piano with varying degrees of expertise!

Treat yourself, friends and family to a beautiful stay in Umbria
Just spent a week here with family, including 2 teen grandchildren who stayed in the cottage by the pool. A great location for exploring hill towns of Umbria & Southern Tuscany and only 10 minutes to Orvieto train for commute to Rome for day trips. Rome hot in July…House had cool night breeze. House is wonderfully decorated and comfortable with beautifully maintained gardens and the kitchen is well stocked for all cooking needs. Have previously rented houses in Italy and France …The owner’s (Susan) pre-trip warm helpfulness plus activity and restaurant suggestions were by far the best and most detailed.
