About this house rental
Originally built in 1880 and later expanded to its present four bedrooms, living room, and dining room, this two story house retains its historic dignity, but has been embellished over the years with certain structural eccentricities that give it antique charm. That quality - a crooked window here, a slightly unusual door there - prompted the owners' daughter on her first visit, to remark about it: 'This looks like a house Dr. Seuss could live in.' And thus it immediately was dubbed 'Dr. Seuss,' the designation on a plaque on the front porch and in a Dr. Seuss print just inside the front door.
Just a few blocks from Lexington's beautiful and historic central district, Dr. Seuss sits immediately next to Lexington city hall, adjacent to Washington & Lee University fraternity houses, and the Lexington visitor's center. Dr. Seuss is steps away from a variety of engaging retail shops, an abundance of excellent restaurants, carriage rides, history walks, movies, and other entertainment.
The historic and beautiful campuses of Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute are within easy walking distance, as are parks, gardens, and walking trails.
Visitors to Dr. Seuss can relax on the front porch and watch the world pass by, or grill and picnic in the backyard. The house features a spacious living room, a dining room with reading nook, and a fully equipped kitchen.
There is one large bedroom and bathroom with shower on the first floor, as well as a laundry room with washer and dryer. The second floor features two large bedrooms and one smaller bedroom, all with queen size beds and dressers. The second floor bath has a shower/tub combination. It's perfect for housing guests for W&L or VMI graduations, weddings, or family gatherings and treks through the Virginia countryside or events at the Virginia Horse Center. Please note that large parties are NOT permitted.
Dr. Seuss doesn't have granite countertops. It doesn't have designer wallpaper. There's no wide-screen tv or plush embroidered bathrobes in the closets. It lacks a wine cellar (but there is a cellar). What is does have is a happy, unassuming nature, a relaxing ambience, and a great location from which as many as eight people can visit this most beautiful Virginia town.

Great spot for a group trip to Lexington.

A group of old high school friends was in town for a wedding and this place was so perfect for us! It was clean, exactly as pictured, and close to the very cute Lexington downtown. Lots of space and great AC for an older house, very appreciated on the hot June weekend. Check in was easy and gosh communication was quick. Would recommend for any groups!

Really nice house and for being 140+ years old it has been restored and maintained to keep the true character while being very comfortable.

Great house that is close to town and W&L!

Lovable old home with all the quirks and touches one would expect. Walkable to downtown locations and the W&L campus. We celebrated our daughter’s graduation from W&L Law, and the Dr. Seuss House made our visit that much better.

Couldn't have had a better place to stay during our son's graduation.

It was our second stay at Dr. Seuss House and we still love it. It’s clean, comfortable, in a great neighborhood in Lexington walkable to town—and has the most cool and eccentric taste in decorating. Great collection and presentation of wall art and so many books! The beds are comfortable and the coffee pods are much appreciated. It’s an old house with old house quirks and it’s awesome. A lot of history there. Communication with host was great and we would absolutely stay again!

This was a great place in a great location. Very close to Main Street Leximgton. Very easy to walk anywhere we wanted. This is an old qwerky house; but even so, there was plenty of space, comfortably bedrooms and nice bathrooms. As you would expect in an old house the kitchen is not the most modern and a little tight for more than one or two to work at the same time, but it was fully stocked with all of what we needed and we were able to prepare and cook big meals. We came to visit our son at VMI and coooked him and his roommates dinner without any problems. We also brought our dog and the fenced part of the backyard was perfect for him. The house is located next to the police station, so we didn't worry about any funmy business in the neighborhood. I would highly recommend the Dr. Seuss house.

This house is just as advertised. It’s very quirky but is clean and comfortable and in a great location. There was plenty of space for my husband and I, my in laws, their golden retriever, and my infant son. The kitchen would be hard to cook in, but there are so many restaurants walking distance it didn’t matter.

Worked out perfectly for our family. Fun house.

perfect location for w&l - walking distance to everything! quirky home that was a great fit for our group!

The house is very old with very few upgrades but beds are comfortable and it has all the basics you need. Location is good…blocks from downtown and Main St. Property Manager wasn’t the friendliest and was not available when we accidentally locked ourselves out of the house. Communication was not great. But overall, good for a big group to stay.

Very comfy beds and even cable tv!! Walking distance to downtown Lexington. Perfect to visit your kids at VMI or W&L.

We enjoyed our stay. The house is fun and quirky. It has everything you need. The place is clean and the location is so close to the Main Street, but not in th e middle of things. I highly recommend.

Very comfortable crooked old house. Nary a straight line to be found. And I mean that in a good way. Very clean and well appointed. Stayed 3 nights and never ate out. Owner graciously replaced the grill that failed and we cooked all meals in the well appointed kitchen or on the grill. 100% recommend this place. For tall people like me, watch your head!

It did not take us long to understand why this was called the Dr. Suess house. It is full of it's own charm and is well apportioned for a stay with a family.

Plenty of room for six adults. Loved the location and loved this unique house. It certainly lived up to how it was advertised. I had to laugh every time I went from the dining room to the kitchen to the bedroom. Only one bedroom had a tv which forced us to get together in the living room to watch TV together and also play cards on large dining room table. Even though there was Wi-Fi I’m pretty sure we didn’t use our cell phones as much. We hardly used the kitchen because of all the great restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance but there were some hills to navigate. If we are ever in the area again we will certainly try to stay at this house.

The house is exactly as advertised. The location is super convenient walking distance from downtown Lexington, and an easy drive to the horse center. We stayed for a week long horse show, and Dr. Seuss suited us perfectly. We hope to visit again.

Clean, comfortable, and close to restaurants/shops downtown. Perfect spot for a few days in Lexington.

As advertised, the house is quirky (floors uneven, some low doorways, but location is great and worked perfectly for our group. Three rooms upstairs share a bath, one BR downstairs with a bath.

As the description says, very quirky house built in the 1800's, but boy was it fun. Beds very comfortable, an easy walk to restaurants and downtown Lexington, VMI (my Reunion) etc. All that was needed was there as far a kitchen supplies, bedding, etc. Would stay again.

This was a great house for an informal gathering with family. We were very relaxed here and grateful for the fenced area for the dog.

We had a wonderful time this past weekend with family and friends. The house was adequate for everyone's needs. Although a little quirky, we all enjoyed the fun theme for the home. The neighborhood was very quiet as was the house. Would definitely stay again.

My family and I were in town for a memorial service in Goshen. Staying at the charming Dr.Seuss house was just right for us. The proximity to downtown Lexington was a bonus. The property manager and her team were very responsive to our needs.

We had a nice stay at the Dr Seuss house for our VMI reunion weekend! With 5 adults and 2 kids there was plenty of space for all of us to be comfortable. The AC was wonderful downstairs keeping it nice and cool. The upstairs had a harder time cooling down. Would surely stay again! Thank you!
