Birthday celebration along the spectacular Smith River. For the last 50 years I try to make it there to rejuvenate in the water and redwoods. Such a slice of heaven.
Love staying in this home and have done so several times. House is very comfortable, laid out great, so clean and brand new kitchen! River is out the back door

Oh my goodness, this home was the absolute favorite of all the places we stayed in our 3 week road trip! I told my husband we found out the perfect place for our retirement home!( I wish) From the moment we walked into the home was like stepping back into time. It was built in the 40’s but has all the modern amenities. Kitchen was a dream kitchen and eating outside on the deck in the morning and evening was our favorite place to spend time. It’s even better than the photos!

My family and I stayed for a visit to the redwoods. The home is beautiful and comfortable. The kitchen had everything needed for cooking meals. The beds were comfortable. We would stay again.

Great location between river and sea. We live nearby so the location and lifestyle fit like a glove. The house is comfortable, well decorated with cool vintage style furniture, and includes all the modern amenities. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you need to make a tasty meal...then you get to eat it on the back deck while you watch the river flow past toward the setting sun
Owner was communicative, friendly and available if you have any questions.
Book it, pack the things you need to enjoy time on the river, shed your work skin and Go!

This property was amazing and our family had a wonderful stay. We enjoyed the sound of the river behind the house. The house was fully equipped with everything you could need and the beds were so comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

This home was BY FAR THE BEST rental we have had. Perfectly appointed. Such a relaxing atmosphere! The deck with the river babbling softly, the birds singing. The kitchen is a chefs dream. Would definitely recommend 10/10.

Gasquet is a magical place and the Smith River is holy ground for me and my husband. Being the only completely wild river, we just love seeing nature unmanaged by humans. We even saw an otter swimming from the deck. The beds are super comfy and the deck is gorgeous. You can't really beat the river view. It may not be the best place if you have a toddler - because of the deck being on a bluff above the river, but otherwise, it is fantastic.

My sisters and I traveled to Northern California mid June and were looking for a place to relax and be able to do a little hiking and fishing. This house did not disappoint!! We stayed 3 nights to have a “home base” to relax and come and go. They had everything we needed! The Smith River was right off the deck and the sound of it flowing was just what we needed. Coffee every morning on the deck was awesome! There were plenty of linens, a lot of space and we felt safe and did NOT want to leave! The essentials were well stocked and even had wood for the fireplace and grill. There are some reviewers with “issues”, but I find hard to believe… those people probably aren’t happy anywhere. We would give this place a higher rating than 10 if we could!! Would definitely go back again! Thank you for making our trip comfortable.

It's rare to find a stay where the house is actually BETTER than the listing but this one does just that. I contemplated just staying forever. The river view is unreal, with crystal blue waters surrounded by verdant forest. The house is very well appointed in a mid-century style, with comfortable rooms, plentiful towels, and a working fireplace for cozy nights. It was clearly decorated by someone who cared, not your typical rental bare-minimum. Yes the place is a bit of a drive from town, but more than worth it. I would argue that's ideal. I may have found my new favorite place to stay.

The six of us friends absolutely adored this place. It was so cute, so clean, and had a lovely fireplace where we spent the evenings chatting and listening to the river. Loved it so much! My only note is that I would say this place does not have safe and direct access to the river from the back of the house like I thought it may in the photos. That misunderstanding of mine was a slight hiccup for me when arriving so wanted to call that out in case anyone else may think it’s directly out back too. But there are SO many beautiful river access spots and very close to this house. One we loved was just four minutes away. We absolutely loved staying here and I highly recommend! :)

We four older hikers loved this beautiful, well appointed home. The layout was pleasing, the kitchen exceptionally well stocked, the beds comfortable, the common areas inviting, and the home’s setting private. The river behind the (also great & stocked) deck is amazing. We hope to return.

We loved our stay at the Smith River Home. Location great for exploring the Redwoods, walking on local beaches in Crescent City and Brookings, and shopping. It was so fun to sit on the deck and enjoy the sounds of the river as it flowed past the house. The kitchen was well stocked, nice sitting area in living room and the dining area and kitchen also provided great views of the River. We enjoyed our morning walks in the quiet neighborhood. Blue ice in freezer was handy. A cooler for picnic food and perishable groceries would be handy. Bathrooms well stocked, however, instead of bar soap maybe body wash with a pump bottle. Bedrooms well furnished. Maybe a mirror in bedroom with twin beds and collapsable luggage racks in non master bedrooms. We felt area rugs in high traffic areas were a possible tripping issue. Thank you Dean for responding quickly to my questions during our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at your Smith River home.

The River House is an exquisite property in an exceptional location. The casual, understated elegance of every detail and the soothing sound of the Smith River just off the deck help you leave the world behind. Light streams in from two sides through tall windows, highlighting the openness of the dining area, and inviting living room, and well-equipped kitchen. The bedrooms are positioned for privacy. Things were easy to figure out, and every communication we had with the host was clear, helpful, and prompt. We could not have asked for a better stay and feel blessed to have made memories at The River House.

We've stayed at dozens Vrbo's rentals all over the USA, and this by far is our favorite. The host Mr. Dean was very responsive and easy to communicate with. What a beautiful deck over looking the river with the outdoor fireplace (plenty of firewood provided). The house has cool modern decor and the sun shines so brightly through the house. The king size bed was so comfortable with cozy linens and pillows. Nice towels and one of the only rentals that we have had Charmin provided. The kitchen was like being at home. Everything you need at your finger tips. The location was perfect . We visited Cresent City, Brookings OR, Trees of Mystery, Howland Hills Road and surrounding river access. We stayed 5 nights and wish we had a few more to enjoy this home. We felt so at home and welcomed. The worst part was having to leave.

Beautiful place to stay right on the river. Impeccably clean. Comfortable space for 2-6 people. Stayed with my husband and although it rained every day it was still charming.

What a lovely place! The River House was beautifully furnished, with the gorgeous Smith River below the house and always visible. The kitchen was a dream in both layout and equipment. The house is close to all of the redwood parks and the neighbors were very friendly. I highly recommend staying here!

This beautiful cabin overlooks the Smith river. Gorgeous midcentury modern decor with thoughtful touches and creative art pieces throughout the house. The newly renovated kitchen is wonderful to cook in and the deck brings inner peace as you listen to the river and watch the stars while listening to david bowies starman and black star. (Quietly so as not disturb the neighbors). Location is east of jedidiah smith redwoods and was a great place to visit redwood state and national parks from. Cabin is far enough from the coast to avoid coastal fog. If youre flying into medford hit the trader joes and stock up before heading out. Owners were very responsive. Our only regret was not staying longer.

Great location! Very quiet with a beautiful view of the Smith River. Upgrades were nice. We had a great time.

Just back from a sublime three-day sojourn at this captivating river cabin, nestled perfectly along the beautiful Smith River bank. The owners have put in praiseworthy efforts in keeping the surroundings immaculate, fostering an atmosphere of serene harmony with nature that I found profoundly soothing.
Stepping inside, the cabin evokes a palpable old-world charm blended seamlessly with modern amenities, striking a nostalgic and convenient balance. The architectural features resonate with rustic beauty, while the advanced facilities ensure you always feel in touch and comfortable.
A distinct highlight of my stay was the superb quality of the beds and bedding. Much meticulous thought has been invested in every detail, and the nights spent in peaceful slumber amplified the cabin's rejuvenating aura.
But the stay's defining aspect was its rich sensory experience. The soft murmur of the Smith River, the aromatic scent of the surrounding flora, incredible views of treelined mountains, and the cozy comfort of the cabin's interior awaken your senses.
The cabin offers an exceptional getaway experience, where you can enjoy nature's grandeur while ensconced in homely comfort. It's an idyllic haven where thoughtful design and natural beauty coalesce to create an unforgettable stay. This is more than just a cabin; it's a sensory journey, a retreat, and a place to rekindle your connection with nature. I highly recommend it and can't wait to return!

We had a really nice stay. We hung out on the beautiful deck for quite some time listening to the river rushing by. There were a couple of nice swimming holes that we visited, and the access to the redwoods was excellent.

We absolutely loved being able to sit above the smith river on the deck each day. The house was nicely furnished and the kitchen was well stocked with all that one might need. Our only issue was the outdoor security lighting that was positioned right above the master bedroom window which in turn flooded the bedroom with bright light that made impossible to sleep in that room. The light was set up through Wi-Fi and we could not turn it off ourselves. We were able to communicate with the owners and they had their house manager remotely turn it off on our second night stay. On the third night we waited patiently for the light to turn off so we could go to bed, but by 11:00 that night we realized it was never going to go off.
It was too late at that point to reach out to the owners again.

My overall impression of this property was great, although I thought there was river access from the house. My family and I enjoyed our stay and wished we could stay longer. We enjoyed all the upgrades and the cleanliness of the house. The views from the deck were amazing and we saw some wildlife while enjoying the scenery. The coast was only a 40 minute drive away so we got the best of both worlds, thank you we would love to come back again!

Beautiful area. Quiet & safe neighborhood. Lovely older home with updates. House layout worked well for us. We spent most of our time out & about the area. There was a bounty of things to see & do outdoors. We were happy to have this home to come back to after a long day of exploring. Most everything you could want was there for our use. We weren't able to appreciate the river deck as much as we would have liked. Because of the time of year & fire hazard, we couldn't use anything but the grill out there. We chose not to use the grill either. The Smith river was accessible by walking east down the street about a block. But we found many other access points all along the river that made for true adventure. We went to Jedediah Smith Redwood park & spent 2 days hiking around there. Crescent City isn't far. The yard itself is big enough that you can hang around there if you want or take the provided bikes for a ride. It was warm enough when we were there, we made use of the inner tube @ Panther Flats campground in the river. Hiking around the area was spectacular. One of my favorite spots was Stony Creek near the North Fork of Smith River. It was fairly late in the season, so we had a little trouble finding proper hiking trail maps as the facility in Gasquet & Houchi were out and cell reception made downloading any maps a non option. But we did take pics of what the Ranger Stations had in the building. The carport @ the house was great on the 2 days we had storms, & a couple of nights we even watched TV to wind down from our full days of exploring. Truly a great "get away"

We really enjoyed our stay at the Smith River House! I love the mid century decor in the house. It was very clean. Lovely peaceful deck by the river with comfortable places to sit and enjoy the river and wildlife. The kitchen was well equipped for a quality eating experience. Spacious living room, dining room and decks outside. Lovely eating areas inside and out. It was really fun that we saw an otter in the river!

This property is so serene! It is a great peaceful escape from a busy hectic life. We hung out on the back deck most of the time just enjoying the sounds of the river and the sights of the wildlife. We saw hummingbirds, duck, river otters, lots of deer, and even saw a black bear once. Loved our stay!

The home is wonderfully situated above the Smith River. The deck and fireplace area was gorgeous. The house was quite large for two people, but the price was the same as my crappy hotel room in I-5. And the best part was the comfy king sized bed in the front bedroom lended itself for a restful night's sleep.

Fly in the ointment
First off, I want to say that there is lots to like about this property. The deck is beautiful and the views of the river are simply stunning. I even saw two river otters make their way across the river on one of the mornings. The house is also decorated nicely, the kitchen is fully stocked, and the bedding was super comfortable. I would even say that this is one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in (although that could partly be due to my body being super tired after hiking each day). The bedroom, bathrooms, and living spaces seemed generally clean so I was happy with the overall cleanliness of the house.
However, I did notice a foul smell emanating from the kitchen area when we arrived, and we could not get rid of it even after personally cleaning the floor there. We also killed between 15-20 flies in the kitchen area when we arrived on the first night. We thought that would be the end of the fly problem, but we killed another 10-15 when we woke up the next morning and probably around 30 when we came back from hiking that day. We did not leave any doors or windows open, and we didn't leave any food out, so we had no idea how the flies were getting into the house or what was attracting them inside.
The flies never stopped appearing during our stay (always in the kitchen/dining space) and it became a daily part of our routine to kill them before preparing breakfast in the morning and after we came back from hiking and before preparing dinner at night. They provided us with two flyswatters so it became a friendly competition of who could kill more flies. However, my inlaws were not amused by this, especially when we achieved a kill count of 46 on one night before dinner was even started. These were big burly houseflies that were lethargic and were not interested in food or getting out of the way of our flyswatters. We were never able to find the source of the infestation, but it put a damper on our stay and I was pretty embarrassed because my in-laws were definitely not happy with the constant stream of flies. There was also a day when we got tired of removing all the dead flies and left them on the floor, but that was a big mistake because then an army of ants showed up to feast on their carcasses and we ended up having to deal with the ants too.
All in all, I would say that this house is lovely if it were not for the flies. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend it because the fly problem is just overwhelming.

Relaxing river view
Nice old house. No problems you wouldn't expect from an older property. Sitting on the deck watching the Smith River was very relaxing. Would stay there again.

Coming home again!
You can go home again! This was our 4th stay at our home away from home. This time our eldest son joined us. We come to visit our eldest daughter. We are an older family mid fifties kids and 70-80’s year old parents. The home is perfectly accessible for our limitations.
When we arrive we greet the home and when we leave we promise our return.
It is the the most comfortable, clean and well stocked home we have ever rented. We treasure this home.

Not what we expected
We arrived early so we drove by the home so we could locate residence. Once we could access the home we were shocked! The fridge was filthy! There was food patricals on several shelf's but the beef blood under the glass and the drawers was shocking. That is the first issue. There was a full trash can under the sink, some kind of debris in the sink, two dark hairs in hall bathroom, one in tub and on back seat of toilet. We also found two used bars of soap on in shower and one at bathroom sink. There was an abundance of flies, small flies and gnats so bad that we had fly swatters on the table so we could attempt to eat without getting a bug in our food. Also there was only one roll of toilet paper for 4 people between 2 bathrooms. Don't get me wrong there was enough toilet paper in each bathroom for use by one person for one time. We booked this house for two nights but chose to leave after first night because of the conditions. I do have pictures I have sent to the J Dean Loving. I would suggest to pass on this home. There where too many unclean areas especially during Covid. If you decide to stay bring Lyson spray and wipes as we did. Also keep in mind you will be paying for a cleaning fee in turn to clean before you settle in. The ask for you to wipe counters and take out all trash. We arrived to neither being done amongst other issues. Last thing I can say is you decide if you want to stay in this home.
