Historical
These vacation rental apartments are in Jerome Wheeler’s carriage house built in 1888.
A second cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jerome Byron Wheeler served during the Civil War, surviving to marry Harriet Macy Valentine (whose family founded Macy’s department store) in 1870. By 1879 he had become the president and a major shareholder of R. H. Macy and Company after the deaths of both its male heirs.
In 1882, Wheeler and his wife visited Colorado, seeking relief for Harriet’s severe bronchitis. They visited Manitou Springs, as it was famous for its mineral waters. In 1883, they built a summer home here, naming it ‘Windemere.’ This sat where the Post Office is currently located.
Soon, Wheeler began hearing reports of silver strikes in Aspen, and he purchased interests in promising mines. Although his time at New York City's most prosperous department store produced years of record sales and profits, Jerome Wheeler’s ambitions were shifting toward Colorado. Wheeler left his position and sold his shares in Macy’s in 1888.
Wheeler became involved in numerous mining ventures in Leadville and Aspen. He organized the Aspen Smelting Company, and built a mountain tramway to bring ore down the mountain to the smelter. He was president of the Croseus Gold Mining and Milling Company, as well as the Rock Hill Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company in Leadville. He was a partner in a marble quarry, and was president of the Grand River Coal and Coke Company. Before long, he was phenomenally wealthy.
He built two of downtown Aspen's landmarks; the Wheeler Opera House and the Hotel Jerome, putting nearly one million dollars in each. These are both thriving today. He built the first bank in Aspen, as well as a large residence, but never lived in the home. Known as the Wheeler-Stallard House, it currently serves as home to the Aspen Historical Society.
All told, he invested nearly $6 million into developing Aspen, and is remembered fondly as an icon there as a result.
Jerome Wheeler became a director of the Colorado Midland Railroad when it was organized in 1885, and brought rail connections to both Aspen and Manitou Springs. He and Colorado Springs railroad tycoon James John Hagerman invested over $100,000 in the extension of the Colorado Midland Railroad to the western slope, the first standard gauge railroad to cross the Continental Divide. Some of the rail beds and tunnels for this railroad can still be seen in various places around town and along US-24 west of Manitou Springs.
He started the Manitou Mineral Water Company, which was very popular back east and was even served at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
He invested in the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, a cog railway that still transports passengers to the top of Pikes Peak.
As he had in Aspen, Wheeler also built the first bank in Manitou Springs, the Wheeler Bank. This yellow brick building sits at the east end of downtown.
Downtown sits a triangle of land with the clock donated by Wheeler to the town. His wife had been intrigued by a similar clock in Italy, so he spent $3600 to provide one for Manitou Springs.
In 1892, Wheeler became embroiled in the first of a series of lengthy and costly lawsuits over one of his silver mines. The combination of the judgments and the Panic of 1893, resulting in the crash of the value of silver, cost Jerome Wheeler nearly his entire fortune.
Wheeler's mining company laid off all its employees. His banks failed and closed for two years, but Wheeler paid his depositors every dollar and they lost nothing.
Manitou Springs continued to benefit from Wheeler’s largess, even after his fortunes had dwindled. He contributed $50,000 toward the construction of Manitou Avenue and outfitted a volunteer fire company. In 1913, after a devastating flood, he gave $10,000 to the city for emergency repairs.
Jerome Wheeler spent most of his remaining years at Windemere until his death on December 1, 1918.
New York. Aspen. Manitou Springs.
Jerome Wheeler was successful wherever he went, and he and Harriet certainly could have lived wherever they desired. But ultimately, they chose Manitou Springs as their home. Come to Manitou Springs and see what they discovered. This is a great place to be.
History of Windemere
Jerome Wheeler’s Windemere estate in Manitou Springs included an elaborate conservatory, this carriage house, billiard rooms and two bowling alleys. Roses for the Cliff House Hotel were grown in the conservatory and placed on guest's pillows each night.
After the death of the Wheelers (Harriet died in 1916), the estate was sold off, and the Wheeler residence was demolished for a hotel. The post office was built on the site in 1940.
The carriage house was divided into seven apartments over100 years ago. The building fell vacant in the 1980's. We purchased the building in 1993 with the intention of developing it into a bed and breakfast. Ultimately, due to the constraints of time, money, full-time jobs, and kids to raise, the bed and breakfast was never realized. As they say, "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans."
Come see why this property has now reached its highest and best use, over 135 years in the making. We think Jerome Wheeler would be pleased with what has become of his carriage house.

Our extended family of 8 seniors rented all three apartment units and had a wonderful stay. The apartments were very beautifully and comfortably furnished with well stocked and equipped kitchens. Avoiding stairs for two of the three apartments was very helpful with our group. The location, just off Manitou Avenue and in front of the park was idyllic and convenient. Our hosts, Kris & Tim, were outstanding and responsive and made the whole experience fabulous!

Me, my husband, my mom and her husband, mom’s sister, brother and cousin just returned from a wonderful stay in manitou springs. The house was perfect for our crew! The location allowed us to walk to everything and check in and out was seamless. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area.

My husband and I have stayed here twice before. When planning an extended family vacation, we knew the house would be perfect for this. We were able to rent all 3 units and have access to the entire house and patio/porch’s. It was a perfect location for our parents (in their 70’s) to have privacy within their own unit, or join the rest of us, when they felt like it. The location was perfect for the younger cousins (12-14 y/o) to play in the park while the parents enjoyed the front porch. It is also the perfect location to visit all of the local shops and arcade, but return back to the house whenever we wanted. Third time was a charm and it won’t be the last (from Wichita, Ks and Richmond, Va)

Thanksgiving in Manitou
The house was perfect for us! We loved how we could easily walk the main street of town right from the front door. Same for the shuttle stops.. I don't think we could have stayed any closer to all of our activities. Our families did the cave dwellings, Incline, Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Cave of the Winds, Cog to Pikes Peak, Olympic Museum, and Seven Falls. The farthest we had to drive was about 20 minutes. Kris answered all of my questions during our stay. Everyone loved the home and Manitou Springs.

We rented all three apartments in the house for our family get together. Each family had our own space yet the apartments are laid out so we could open our doors to the interior hallway and have social time together. The units are extremely well equipped and immaculate. With three generations to entertain, the location is perfect for access to the many activities in the area.

This is a beautiful historic home in the heart of Manitou Springs. It is fully equipped with everything you could possibly want. The owners decorated with crepe paper and balloons for my eleven year old granddaughter’s birthday; thanks so much, Kris! My granddaughter loved it! I think it must be the most beautiful property in Manitou Springs. We loved staying there!

Thanks so much, Kris and Tim! Our family reunion was made even better at your location! We had everything we needed and then some. We had only one issue (the dish tv box went out) and yet you had it fixed on a holiday within a very short period of time! Thanks also for the kids goodies and wine !!!

Here for a wedding
This property is perfect for traveling to Manitou with family or friends. We used all three apartments and were able to meet up in the larger downstairs apartment. Our only disappointment was that we didn’t have more time to hang out on the patio. The bottles of wine as a welcome gift was a nice touch. Kris and Tim are great hosts and Manitou Springs is a special place. We were able to walk to just about everywhere we needed to go.

Perfect for family reunion!
Lovely property with a great location. Tim and Kris are very engaged and answer questions promptly. We rented the entire house for a cousin reunion with 6 of us staying at the VRBO and the rest at The Cliff House. Perfect gathering place. Very clean with many amenities most VRBOs do not have (e.g., detergent and 3 washer/dryer units). Inquire about the A/C if you are prone to hot flashes :-) Overall just a perfect spot with very accommodating owners!!

Perfect Family Getaway
This property was amazing. We have family in Manitou and wanted something within walking distance. We rented the entire home and it worked perfectly for the 6 adults and 1 child. It offered a gathering place on the main floor and gave our 2 children and their spouses privacy on the second floor. The location was perfect! Our granddaughter loved the park right across the street. We were able to sit out on the patio and enjoy the wonderful weather. Would highly recommend this home to anyone wanting to stay right in the heart of Manitou!

Great Home, Great Location
My family has been participating in the Emma Crawford Coffin Races for the last ten years. We normally stay at the Cliff House, but this year we decided to make a change. The Carriage House was perfect! The home was gorgeous and the proximity to Manitou Avenue was ideal. Tim and Kris were wonderful hosts. We will definitely be back.

A beautiful home with space and privacy for everyone.
We rented all three units for our family and it was a perfect set up. We gathered together for dinners and games downstairs and could retreat to our own beautiful apartments later.
The location is perfect! Great shopping, restaurants and attractions are within walking distance or a short drive.
The owners are a lovely couple who will take care of any needs you may have or answer any questions.
We look forward to going back.

Great place to stay while visiting Manitou Springs
This was our 2nd time to stay at The Carriage House, both times over Thanksgiving. We enjoyed our stay this time as much as the first time. We rented a one bedroom unit on the 2nd floor as well as the two bedroom unit on the first floor. There was plenty of room between the two units and we had everything we needed to cook a nice thanksgiving dinner. The property is very well maintained, and the descriptions and pictures are right on. We loved staying here. Kris and Tim are wonderful to work with. The Carriage House is right across a small park from the Main Street where there are many cute shops and restaurants. We love walking around town. The first time we came it snowed and this time we had beautiful sunny days. We would definitely stay here again if we get back to a Manitou Springs.

USAFA Parent's Weekend - Awesome!
Our family had a wonderful weekend stay in Manitou Springs - this historic carriage house has been beautifully renovated. It was spacious and our favorite part was sitting on the deck overlooking the creek and town of Manitou Springs. It couldn't have been more convenient. We will return!

The Carriage House was the perfect spot to be for parents weekend. It had everything we needed. The town was walkable and enjoyable. My son was able to just relax and sleep the days away which is what we wanted for him. Kris and Tim were beyond friendly and welcoming, they even had a bottle of wine for us on check in. We liked the Carriage House so much we booked it for next year, 2018.

Perfect place, perfect location - a rare combination.
This is a wonderful home for all. We booked the entire Carriage House while visiting for my niece's wedding. The layout and attention to detail in each unit was perfect for our extended family. We never closed or locked the inner doors and each unit allowed both together and private time. Having keyless locks that allow the same code also made it easy and convenient. It was super clean, spacious (having each unit self contained with washer/dryer, kitchen and bathroom is a major bonus) and comfortable. The location can't be beat. The proximity to everything you want/need in Manitou is right there. The owners were helpful, responsive and accommodating. As frequent visitors to Colorado, we will definitely be back and recommend this home to all.

Phenomenal location, Beautiful and clean accommodations
My family of five (two adults, three kiddos 7, 5, and 6mo) stayed in one of the one bedroom apartments and it worked out great. Kris and Tim were fantastic hosts, the apartment was super clean and the location was phenomenal. The older kiddos had a pull-out couch to sleep on in the living room while there was a little closet nook in the bedroom that fit a pack-n-play for the baby. The balcony out front looked over the park and we were seriously only steps away from all the shops and restaurants in town. The kitchen was stocked with all items you'd need to cook meals although we didn't with our short two day stay. The washer a dryer looked to be brand new and worked great and they provided laundry pods to use. One thing to note is that there are not blackout shades in the bedroom (and this is not a criticism, just something that parents might find helpful in a review if their baby likes complete darkness to sleep like mine!) We had a great stay and would most definitely book again if we find ourselves back in Manitou Springs!

Our family of five arrived very late; Tim and Kris were still there waiting to great us and help us unload. They were so friendly and helpful! The house is charming and fit us all perfectly, including our 2 dogs! We were so delighted with our stay that we can't wait to go back!

We had a wonderful time visiting Manitou Springs. The house was as beautiful and comfortable as the description makes it sound! Tim and Kris were so welcoming. They made sure we knew exactly where we were headed, and came to greet us when we arrived with a quick tour of the house. They even upgraded us to the two bedroom unit since no one had booked it for that night! Hope to come back again someday, and explore Manitou Springs further.

Kris and Tim were thoughtful and gracious hosts. Everything was just as advertised. Nicely decorated, comfortable and all the appliances were in excellent condition. There is a park across the street which is great for dog playing and walking. Just past the park is a street and neighborhood with restaurants, shops, pubs. A very pleasant place all around and we will be going back when we are in the area. I would recommend this property to a friend, a relative and anyone looking for a place in Manitou Springs. It is also very quick and easy to get into Colorado Springs from here, if you have business there.

My husband and I, really enjoyed our stay at the carriage house. It was equipped with everything from a fully functional kitchen, satellite TV, WiFi, washer and dryer, and a very comfortable bed; all super clean. We felt safe, as you are provided a code to enter the building and your rental. Additionally , there is a park right next to the carriage house, making it convenient to take your dog out to do their business. The location is perfect, walking distance to restaurants and shops. We definitely will stay at the carriage again, and highly recommend it to others to stay here.
