About this hotel
This property will no longer be managed by Stay Charlottesville as of the end of November 2024.
The Faulkner Room blends modern touches with the atmosphere of a more romantic era. Staying here is like settling into a private sitting room filled with literary ramblings and evening plans.
The Townsman is the newest concept in hotel accommodations. Instead of charging you for things you’ll never use, we’ve pared ourselves down to the essentials. Incredible locations. Beautiful rooms. Great prices. Once you book with us, we’ll give you a code that grants you access to the hotel and your room. After that, all you have to do is show up. No check-in. No hassles. Just a boutique hotel, steps from the places you most want to be.
Where are you located exactly?
We’re at 211 West Main Street, right on Charlottesville’s historic Downtown Mall. The location can't be beat in the middle of the downtown action! We like to note to future guests that this is a popular area (especially on the weekends) and the noise level on the Downtown Mall may be higher particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Where do Townsman guests park?
Parking: Parking for guests is located at 300 Preston Ave. in Charlottesville. There is one spot for each room located directly to the left of the main sign for the parking lot. Each Spot has signage that has "The Townsman" and the corresponding name of the room on them. Please only park in the spot designated for your room.
How does the code work?
Our front door and the door to your room will feature a keypad into which you’ll enter your personal code. The code we give you when you book is given to no one else and only works for the duration of your stay.
What services do you offer?
What we offer is a room you’ll love in a downtown location that can’t be beat. To keep our prices where you want them, we don’t have an onsite staff, front desk, room service or amenities you may not need; but we do have Charlottesville’s downtown walking mall, restaurants, coffee shops, a movie theater, and local boutique shopping just steps away.
Do you have Internet access?
Yes! The Wi-Fi code will be in your room.
Will there be a phone in my room?
We do not have phone service but the building does have good cell service, so bring your phone and stay connected.
On the second-floor landing you’ll find:

Loved The simplicity of the room and decor the colors. The bathroom was wonderful and pretty bonus was being able to go to the common house, which is really really lovely and being so close to everything and going to the movie theater right across the street. It was very quaint very nice.

It was a lovely quick little stay in this quant room. Love the Ralph Lauren style and would definitely stay there again.

Great location, great value and great amenities, including reserved parking on the Downtown Mall. The room is well furnished. Check-in process was seamless. Highly recommend.

We stayed in this "unhotel" for UVA graduation weekend. The room was perfect and we loved being right on The Mall. We grabbed breakfast at Mudhouse Coffee every morning and enjoyed the easy access to the places on The Mall. The parking spot is very convenient as well. The room was very nice and clean. We would definitely stay here again.

Such a cute, clean and convenient spot in downtown Charlottesville. It was to everything, we walked everywhere and parking was included, which was a bonus. Will definitely stay again!

We so loved our stay in Charlottesville. Our room was lovely as well as comfortable. The location was perfect. Our host was helpful and very quick to respond when we had a question. We look forward to going back.

We loved it all and would return. Somehow we missed the information on the condo being up three flights of stairs. A workout with suitcases.

Centrally located and very clean room. Will definitely stay again.

This property is a gem! Very reasonably priced for an excellent location. The door to the hotel is right on the downtown mall, next to Mudhouse coffee. Parking is included which is also huge! You also get access to the Common House working/social club next door, which we took advantage of. Would absolutely stay again!

Overall the property was as described. However it was up two stories and others may not have been able to navigate the stairs. Also, there were sugar ants in the bathroom. The location was exactly where we wanted to be!

We stayed here after two nights of camping in the Shenandoah. It was the perfect place the relax and unwind and we really enjoyed breakfast at Common House. Will definitely stay here again

Perfect location for graduation weekend. Beautiful room. We had a light breakfast at the Commonwealth House, which is also lovely.

+ nice, very clean room
+ central, best possible location
+: good communication, reached person on phone firectly when needed
-: wifi is very slow, this really needs improvement
-: the number code to open the room did not work, I received a working replacement code durectly, though, with a quick phone call
- a water boiler would have been nice, just a coffee machine provided
- another possible improvement: provide at least plastic cutlery and one-way plates and bowls in the shared area at the fridge

Nice rental in central location and good value when comparing like properties. Comfortable bed and nice linens. Love the bath products! We’ve stayed here before and plan to return. It can be noisy at night later in the week if you go to bed early. There is a live band at a neighboring property. Management does point that out.

My husband and I wanted to spend some time in Charlottesville, to visit a couple wineries ona. Quick Saturday and Sunday tip. We also knew we wanted to be downtown area to have a great Saturday night out, and not have to worry about Ubering back-and-forth to a hotel. I was also looking for affordability as many of the chain hotels were a bit pricey to stay close to downtown. The Townsman “un hotel” concept was perfect! We had a slight issue when we got there with our door code not working, it was 5 o’clock on Saturday and I got an immediate answer with quick action. Unfortunately, around 8 o’clock we had the issue with the back up code as well, and again we had Immediate response and a new code that worked perfectly rest of the time. The water in the little community fridge was always stocked and ready. The only thing I would say is keep your eyes peeled when you walk up, if you blink you’ll miss the entrance!

In a good location. As advertised.

We loved this little spot right on the mall. Perfect for a quick night away. The in room espresso and balcony made it next level!

We very much enjoyed out stay at the Townsman Hotel in North Downtown. The parking was about a 2-block walk and slightly uphill, but not inconvenient. The unit was well-appointed and extremely quiet. The Faulkner unit is on the third floor, so it was a bit hard to bring my heavy suitcase up the three flights of stairs, but no big deal. I was initially concerned after reading some reviewers comments about the homeless population near that location. We did see a few, but they did not bother us, nor did we feel threatened in any way. I would stay here again.

The hotel is very centrally located. The parking space is a short block away, and noise could be an issue at certain times, and is noted in their own write-up. There are quite a few steps which could be an issue for some people. It was a nice room, comfortable bed, and nice products in the bathroom! I’ll bring my own pillow next time.

Overall, the room was very nice and was just as described and pictured. However, I arrived late at night and it was very unclear where I was supposed to park. It turned out that my designated parking space was in a poorly lit parking lot belonging to a community organization about a block and a half away. It was extremely difficult to locate my designated spot out of about 60 or 80 spots in the parking lot. It was only marked with a small, 8 by 11 inch sign. I had to walk all around the lot alone in the dark, shining the light from my cell phone, trying to find my spot (it turned out to be marked only by a small, 8 by 11 inch sign). Then, when I arrived at the building and went to enter my room, the door code I had been given (in lieu of a key) didn't work. I was very nervous. I called the phone number associated with this property. Luckily, I was able to reach someone, who gave me a "backup code." Fortunately, the "backup code" worked, although my own personalized code that I had been given never did work over the 16 or so hours I was there. This indicated to me that I wasn't using an individualized code, but instead one that might have been used by a number of people (the person I spoke with said that "this was a backup code she usually used"), so I didn't feel too secure. Also, the woman I reached on the phone said that I was "lucky" to have reached anyone at all by phone, because there was a different number I should have called. That didn't reassure me. This place prides itself on keeping prices low by offering few perks, but being able to check in with a secure, individualized door code is a very low bar, and they did not meet this bar.

Great location! Everything was great about the accommodations.

Great location. Parking is a plus. While the alley is not a great view, the mountains in the background are nice. All correspondence were helpful and timely.

Great location - we walked everywhere.
Great location - we walked everywhere. The free parking was a plus and we always found a spot when we did drive. The free pass to The Common House was a plus too; we really enjoyed going there for a couple of drinks. We liked being on the third floor because we read some reviews about noise from people above. we did our best to maintain a sense of quiet for those below us. we liked the quiet location and the outdoor patio too. Question #4 does not really apply since there are not any housewares in the unit.
we loved the decor of the room and the bed was very comfortable too! Outstanding. I had to call two times because i didn't read the instructions very well! i was steered to the parking lot - as i tried to input the hotel name into google maps. I had to call about having an empty box of Kleenex in the room when we checked in. I was told that since it was after hours, we would have the kleenex brought the next day. they forgot to bring a box so i had to call again. housekeeping brought it right away. customer service was great.

Great walk score to the downtown mall! We loved it!

I gave #4 a 2/12 because I didn't receive a washcloth.
I gave #4 a 2/12 because I didn't receive a washcloth. I would have skipped my room being cleaned on the second day if I would have had a washcloth. My room was cleaned and new towels however still no washcloth.

I had a great stay, the room was clean and comfortable, the location could not have been better, the coffee machine was a great perk.
4.7
Loved the location, design, ease of the process (except having to call to book a one-night stay) Friendly and efficient

Love, love, love this concept. Wonderful room for much less than the nicer hotels would charge. We definitely did not miss any of staffed features a typical hotel would have. In fact this was all around much easier. Loved the furnishings. Also we enjoyed the balcony - the view wasn't the best, but it didn't matter. Very convenient to parking, and perfect for enjoying the downtown mall on foot. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Charlottesville. Very pleasant and helpful.

Lovely place to stay- close to everything.
Lovely place to stay- close to everything. Excellent team- responded to me quickly and were very friendly.

My husband and I enjoyed our two-night stay in The Townsman Hotel. It's location on the walking zone is ideal for folks who want to visit nearby shops, restaurants, and performing arts venues. We made all our arrangements online and the logistics went smoothly. The free parking lot is a short walk from the hotel. Using key codes to get into the hotel and guest room was easy. There's a free coffee and bottled water bar on the second floor. Our third-floor room (Faulkner) is clean and modern. We especially appreciated the comfortable bed, lovely tiled shower, sitting area with leather couch, natural light, big-screen TV with Netflix, and lots of power outlets for charging our electronics. Best of all was free entrance to the nearby Common House -- a private social club -- where we enjoyed breakfast in the morning and dinner by a wood fire in the evening. We highly recommend.the Townsman Hotel and hope to stay there again. Booking online was easy. We made one phone call to request a parking pass (that had been misdirected into our spam file). The team member was very polite and immediately responded to our request.
