About this house rental
This property will no longer be managed by Stay Charlottesville as of the end of November 2024.
A black-and-white color scheme with bronze accents gives the Poe room an urban sensibility touched with a mid-century chic. It’s perfect for those who dream by day.
The Townsman is the newest concept in hotel accommodations. Instead of charging you for things you’ll never use, we’ve pared ourselves down to the essentials. Incredible locations. Beautiful rooms. Great prices. Once you book with us, we’ll give you a code that grants you access to the hotel and your room. After that, all you have to do is show up. No check-in. No hassles. Just a boutique hotel, steps from the places you most want to be.
Where are you located exactly?
We’re at 211 West Main Street, right on Charlottesville’s historic Downtown Mall. The location can't be beat in the middle of the downtown action! We like to note to future guests that this is a popular area (especially on the weekends) and the noise level on the Downtown Mall may be higher particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Where do Townsman guests park?
Parking: Parking for guests is located at 300 Preston Ave. in Charlottesville. There is one spot for each room located directly to the left of the main sign for the parking lot. Each Spot has signage that has "The Townsman" and the corresponding name of the room on them. Please only park in the spot designated for your room.
How does the code work?
Our front door and the door to your room will feature a keypad into which you’ll enter your personal code. The code we give you when you book is given to no one else and only works for the duration of your stay.
What services do you offer?
What we offer is a room you’ll love in a downtown location that can’t be beat. To keep our prices where you want them, we don’t have an onsite staff, front desk, room service or amenities you may not need; but we do have Charlottesville’s downtown walking mall, restaurants, coffee shops, a movie theater, and local boutique shopping just steps away.
Do you have Internet access?
Yes! And it’s fast, so bring all your devices. The Wi-Fi code will be in your room.
Will there be a phone in my room?
We do not have phone service but the building does have good cell service, so bring your phone and stay connected.
On the second-floor landing you’ll find:
A refrigerator available to all guests
Complimentary bottles of water & coffee
Is there an elevator?
Like most of downtown Charlottesville’s most charming buildings, we are not equipped with an elevator. All of our rooms are walk-ups, accessed by the stairs.
All guests of Stay Charlottesville receive exclusive access to Common House during your stay. Common House is a local membership based social club that offers a unique space to work, dine, and engage. There is a co-work space available during weekdays, a full service restaurant offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a roof-top terrace with sweeping views of Charlottesville.

Room is comfortable. When I arrived it smelt a little smoky, maybe moldy not sure. I got used to it quickly, there’s nothing you can do because the windows do not open. It was a good night sleep and the accommodations are very worthy.
4.7
Convenient location. Room was small. Bed was hard. Shower had good pressure. Homeless people outside the building were noisy.
4.7
The room is very convenient, and the parking spot is very helpful and also convenient.
The room is plenty big and was clean.
With the location being on the mall there is a slight noise that is rather constant, it’s not overly loud and did not keep me awake. The widow curtains could be larger to allow for better privacy at night.
I will mention the downtown mall is an interesting place with a large homeless population, and the crowds at night were different than during the day. There was a shooting outside the room around 1230am, this is certainly not the hosts fault but something to consider when staying in the area.

In town for a concert at the Jefferson, price was right, location is perfect and the property was clean, nice and had everything we needed for a wonderful stay. 10/10

Loved staying here. A little issue with the AC but management was very responsive and cordial. Definitely a place to stay.

We had a great time.

Spent two nights on the mall in C-ville to attend a concert at Ting Pavilion. I will definitely return. Lovely accommodations in a beautiful area.

As a former Cville resident, it was so fun to visit and stay on the downtown mall. Access to the property/ room was easy, just a quick walk from parking, and close to coffee, food, farmers market, and entertainment. The room was nicely decorated, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was a great size with great finishes. One thing to note is there is no mini fridge/microwave in the room as noted in the listing, not a big deal, just something to plan for, and no ice available on site. Again, just something to plan for. I definitely recommend and will 100% be staying here again.

I love the concept of this staffless hotel. It's actually quicker and easier not having to check in at a staffed front desk. The property was spotless, the location is prime, and the included free parking was greatly appreciated. There are only 3 minor criticisms: 1) the lack of an elevator makes carrying luggage upstairs a chore and the disabled cannot stay there; 2) the rooms aren't stocked with facial tissue; 3) there was no notification that the water in the common are beverage cooler was for guests. We afraid to take any thinking it belonged to someone - until cleaning staff advised us it was for guests as we checked out.

Was a very nice literary themed room in downtown overlooking the pedestrian mall.

great location for our itinerary.

We were in town for 1 night for a concert. The Poe room was very clean and welcoming! I would highly recommend! Very convenient to many places.
4.7
Super clean and great location!

Had a problem with code but was helped by the management , Great view of the mall. Very clean , great shower. The only down side is parking and getting luggage up the steep stairs after your trek up the street with it . Also , as in most little cities , they also have a homelessness issue. No major issues with it and I felt safe.

We went to a concert in Ting Pavilion at the end of the Mall so this was a great location. It was clean and comfortable. Owner was very quick to reply when having trouble with the check-in instructions.

A little hard to find but worth the search! N/a

A step away from the Sprint Pavillion! Great expect the one comment above!
4.7
Easy access to downtown

Everything was great. I only have a few comments.
1. The Toilet Paper holder was loose and needs to properly re installed
2. The sink (Poe Room) does not drain properly. After having the water on for 30 seconds the vessel was almost full.
3. I believe the deck from the room above my own is placed above the bed. When the tenants above returned from a night of drinking it was very loud for an hour. Don't know what you can do about it but thought you should be aware.
4.7
Everything was great. Nice room and clean. In the middle of everything. I'm definitely going to be back soon for a few days to explore some more. They were there to guide us to the parking lot because we were very lost.
Very efficient.

First and foremost I would stay at this property again. However, I would want to try a different room than Poe. The room itself was very nice and clean (with the exception of some cobwebs hanging down from the lights and a few stray hairs that weren't mine in the bed. In terms of location, it can't be beat--parking was about two blocks away and is right on the mall where you have bars, restaurants, and shops right as soon as you walk out and the other stretch of restaurants is only about half a mile away. On a Thursday night the noise level from outside was not noticeable. However, during the hours that the coffee shop was open, you could definitely hear the din of conversation through the wall. It wasn't loud but it was audible and in some instance you could make out what was being said, which is why I'd want to try a different room to see if that could be avoided. It was great having water bottles available (and beer and coffee, too, but I didn't partake in that). Overall it's a great property in terms of location and price. My initial question via chat was addressed very quickly.
4.7
Great location in that it is close to everything on the mall, and a quick ride to just about everything else in Charlottesville. The bathroom was roomy and beautiful. Had everything we needed. The bed was extremely comfortable. the sound machine was a nice touch, because the only drawback is the noise from the mall and surrounding buildings. We didn't notice the noise too much at night (because we were out late) but there was loud music in the morning that the noise machine valiantly tried to drum out. The lobby/landing area with coffee, water and glasses was clean and stocked. Overall it is a beautiful property in a great location. The ladies who helped me book the room were very friendly, and helpful. Was an easy process and they even called to make sure we got checked in and everything was good. Amazing customer service.

I loved The Townsman! It's a unique concept and that is the reason I wanted to stay there. The location is great and I really enjoyed using the codes and not worrying about checking in and out. The directions were very clear! I loved my modern room and bed and television. The bathroom was lovely. I so enjoyed being right on the Downtown Mall and the parking was great. Keep those prices down... it's a great place to stay and a great getaway in a funky setting. I plan to stay there again and recommend it to others. Thanks for an enjoyable stay! Loved the tea and water bar. I like the late check out as well... Very smart! I thought it was the easiest check in ever. I actually really liked the parking... Directions were super clear.

It was good and fast response but electric code door lock broke and was locked in the room for 1 hour waiting for repairman and then waited another hour for the door to be fixed. Ended up taking most of the afternoon on Sunday. Maybe give out keys in addition to the code in the future? everyone was professional, nice and quick response. great job!

Nice room with central location. Team member helped us verify we were parked in the correct lot.
4.7
No tissues in room - about 1/4 roll of toilet paper. Ran out of toilet paper and had to call main number. They came to hotel to find there was none in stock room either. Our friend had the room upstairs from us and he also had 1/4 roll of toilet paper... Bathroom sink drain was clogged. Toothpaste or soap on the wall of the bathroom. Basically, housekeeping was a little lacking. Loved location/view/simplicity.

Our stay was excellent, starting with the convenience of free parking and continuing to just going to and leaving our room without having to go through a check in or check out procedure. The design of the room was very comfortable and the cleaning staff excellent. Where did you buy your drapes? The area was great with a good selection of restaurants and shops. I loved the shaded outdoor tables and seating along the entire pedestrian mall, perfect for strolling then just sitting while enjoying a bite to eat and watching people. Registration was easy and the Stay Charlottesville information sent to me through the Townsman was helpful. The team works well and made everything so easy.
4.7
Same comments as above. The room was beautiful, we loved the washroom, the view and the proximity to restaurants, shopping and other attractions, but the lack of sleep due to noise seriously affected our view of the property. I appreciated the assistance of the team prior to the visit. They were professional and helpful.
4.7
Seems like we needed a few more coffee pods and maybe a jug of water to add to the Keurig.
Loved staying at the site---will return
4.7
Stay was fantastic. Only small downfall was constantly hearing the people above up walking or stomping or jumping of some sort. Additionally, some noise from the walking mall was distracting, but I was informed of that before renting the room. We really appreciated the noise maker. Kate was AMAZING!
4.7
The bathroom door doesn’t close entirely (Poe) and it came off it’s tracks easily. It was easily put back on, but it seemed unstable.
4.7
The hotel was beautiful- Just stunning. The walkability was great as well. We were in the Poe Room, and perhaps being on the mall side made this worse, but it was unbelievably loud. It seemed evident there was no sound proofing done at all. In addition, I could clearly hear other guests walk up and down and in and out of the hotel. Footsteps, word for word conversations, everything. We heard walking (that sounded like pounding)at night from the room above us as well. We didn't get much sleep. While it was beautiful and the overall concept neat, we would not stay again.
4.7
The Poe Room is a very comfortable, beautifully-designed accommodation: comfortable bed, good reading lights, beautiful bathroom, convenient device charging. The property is so convenient to downtown mall amenities. We especially enjoyed the complimentary guest membership at Common House. Brief but pleasant interaction with housekeeper; good email communications

There were no housewares at this property, so that question was N/A.
The Townsman was perfectly situated over the Downtown Mall, yet it was quiet and peaceful, even on a Friday night. Obviously, we could walk anywhere and when we needed a cab, it was seconds to have them pick us up at the corner near the Violet Crown theater. We loved having a dedicated parking spot so that we did not have to search and pay the high cost of Charlottesville Downtown parking. Huge thanks for this!
The room was like staying in an elegant friends guest room. Beautiful furnishings, classy decor and a really fun shower - it was unique, and had excellent water pressure.
It was a fantastic treat to be able to access The Common House as a benefit of our Townsman reservation. Brunch capped off a perfect weekend Downtown! Easy to work with. A few suggestions for this location, the Poe Room in the Townsman:
The luggage rack still had stickers on it, making it look a bit cheap and out of place in this classy room. The toilet paper roll holder was minimally functional -- it seemed like it was loose, so the roll kept falling out.
4.7
This hotel was a perfect fit for our group of friends split between three of the rooms. I loved how close it was to everything and how easy it was to get in and out of the hotel. I will recommend to all my friends staying in charlottesville! The cleaning staff did a great job turning over the room each day and refreshing towels. Much appreciated!
4.7
This was a great place to stay - right on pedestrian mall and near other attractions. The room was lovely and had everything I needed. It can be a bit noisy at night until folks leave the pedestrian mall and some guests were not very quiet coming in at night, but it was not too bad. Parking was very convenient - I would suggest putting the name of the parking lot on your map - as there are several lots and it was a little confusing, but I called and a nice person confirmed I was in the right place. My last morning I noted the desk chair was broken and emailed to let you know, and again received a prompt follow up. Everyone was great and the communications were clear and friendly. I had to adjust my reservation dates and you were most helpful and accommodating. Thank you.
4.7
We enjoyed access to the Common House. It would be more convenient to be able to make a one-day reservation for the Townsman via online rather than calling.
