About this cabin rental
Welcome to Bear Beach Maine!
If you are looking for a cozy yet spacious and extremely well-appointed home nestled peacefully in the woods and directly on a secluded, sandy beach this is your place!
From the moment you walk through the door you will feel warmly greeted by this log home designed to resemble an early American lodge. The open concept great room with its cathedral ceiling, large field-stone fireplace and comfy furnishings are equally favorable for both larger gatherings and intimate parties of two. The sunlight streams through the expansive windows in the afternoon. Enjoy a fire, a glass of wine or hot chocolate and a good book or movie on the Blu-ray/DVD player for a perfect day of relaxation.
There are two dining areas within the open concept, each with expandable leaves allowing plenty of room for meal time guests or family game nights. The hutch/book case contains enough games and puzzles to make even a rainy or snowy day enjoyable. Or head to the basement for a game of Foosball or pool. A wooden folding table next to the hutch can be set up as a "working vacation" desk...Sometimes its needed. We do have free wifi!
In the kitchen you will find nearly everything imaginable to make gourmet meals or heat up a frozen dinner. From spices to a lobster pot, cast iron cookware, electric griddle, both Keurig and regular coffee makers, microwave, toaster, crock pot, wine cooler with lots of beverage glasses! If something is missing, you probably just have not found it yet.
Sleep soundly in the master queen bed to the sound of the ocean or to a crackling fire in the master fireplace. But first, unwind in the warmth of the claw foot soaking tub in the connecting bathroom.
On the same level, in the other wing of the house, are two bedrooms and the second full bathroom. Both have queen beds, one also has an ocean view with sliding doors to the covered oceanfront deck where you can sip your morning coffee while listening to the sounds of sea birds and lobster boats.
The spacious loft with four twin beds overlooks the great room and has stunning views of the ocean and also the back yard.
We have installed a Generac Stand-by Generator so you should always have power even through occasional outages due to coastal storms. The log cabin construction is very cozy in inclement weather.
Arguably, the most fun part of the house is not even IN the house. The Bare Den is located in the back yard and houses the sauna with cool-down room (open all year) and also the out-door shower (open seasonally). Nothing is as refreshing as taking a warm shower in the open air while watching the ocean and an occasional bald eagle flying overhead. Its also great for rinsing off sandy feet or pets! And at the end of a day, relaxing every muscle in the heat of the sauna and cooling down with an icy beverage is simply magical.
Bear Beach Maine is located on Holmes Bay in the town of Cutler. Because the house faces West on the bay, it enjoys the most gorgeous sunsets over the ocean. Relax on the front deck with a glass of wine, chilled cocktail or cup of coffee and its hard not to reflect on the many blessings of the day as the sun falls below the horizon.
Head down the staircase in front of the house to the sandy beach. Enjoy long walks along the varying shoreline at lower tide, or have kayaks delivered to the house from Sunrise Canoe and Kayak to view the coast from a whole different perspective. Pack a picnic lunch and kayak over to Hog Island a 15-20 minute paddle from the front of the house. A short hike around the island will have you searching for the Indian rock carvings (petroglyphs) which were pecked into ledges hundreds of years ago by the Algonquin Indians. These unique carvings are located on the southwest side of the island and are engraved into the latent shale stone.
If you do find the need to leave the house (like to get lobsters) head just a few miles out to Little River Lobster in the town of Cutler and watch your dinner come straight from the ocean to your table! At the end of our road, stop by A to Z Variety and pick up some freshly-harvested clams right from Holmes Bay! Add to that an amazing selection of fine wine and beer from all over the world (and local varieties) at the French Cellar in Machias, and you will have a meal to remember!

Other fun suggestions:
Cutler Harbor is considered one of the prettiest little harbors in Maine. And there you will find The Bold Coast Charter Company where Captain Andy Patterson can take you to Machias Seal Island to view the largest puffin colony along the coast of Maine. His tours book up very fast, so book early!
A few miles further toward the town of Milbridge, Robertson Sea Tours offers a number of unique and very educational tours including a whale-watching tour. Captain Robertson was a teacher who followed his dream of owning a tour company and becoming a commercial fisherman. He knows how to impart his knowledge and love of the ocean area to others!
Bear Beach Maine is also only a few minutes drive from two of the most spectacular ocean-side hiking trails on the east coast, the Western Head Trail (located on the west side of Cutler harbor) and the Bold Coast Trail (located just to east of Cutler harbor). Both of these hikes expose area guests to some of Maine's most rugged and bold crashing-surf shorelines east of Acadia.
Guests can also visit scenic Lubec where West Quoddy Head light house is located and its wonderful coastal hiking trail. Don't forget to stop by Monica's Chocolates for a decadent selection of hand-made Peruvian chocolates (She gives free samples!) Just across the bridge from Lubec is Canada's Campobello Island and the location of President Theodore and Eleanor Roosevelt's summer home. This is probably the best free tour you will ever take especially if you are able to score tickets to the morning seating of "Tea With Eleanor"...Keep in mind that Campabello Island is in the Atlantic time zone when making plans.
Both Lubec and Campobello Island are only 30 minutes from Bear Beach Maine. Also, New Brunswick, Canada is only 1 hour and 15 minutes away, and Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are just 2 hours from the house. These destinations are easy day trips from the property.
The house is 2 hours from Bangor International Airport, 5 hours from the Portland Jetport, 7 hours from Boston and 11 hours from New York City.
Bear Beach Maine is available all year. There is a four-night minimum stay. The months of June through mid October are rented on a weekly basis only with Saturday as the "change over" day.
Both a 50% deposit and a signed rental agreement are required before your reservation is confirmed.
The balance of rental fees and a $500 refundable security/damage deposit is due 30 days prior to your arrival.
Your well-behaved dogs are welcome with no additional pet fee (We trust that that pet parents are responsible and will remove waste from the yard before departure...Should additional cleaning be required, it will be deducted from the security deposit)
Cats are not permitted due to severe allergies.
We have a strict "No Smoking" policy that is clearly addressed in the rental agreement. Smoking is not allowed inside the house or Bare Den.
We have two security cameras on the property. One is located on the front deck aimed at the driveway. The other is on the back deck and captures the entry door. We have absolutely no interior cameras (There are some things a mom does not want to know)
Rates subject to change anytime until booking & deposit

While our cancellation policy is 100% refund with more than 60 days notice from arrival day, the service fee to VRBO/Homeaway is non refundable.

This was our 5th stay at Bear Beach. We usually like to move around and try new places, but there simply is no place like it. It is a beautiful tradition we vow to repeat each year from our beach chairs. Maine at its wildest and most serene, with absolute privacy, epic days and glorious sunsets. We love to swim at high tide, dig for clams and clay at low tide and then rinse in the warm outdoor shower and relax in the sauna. Thank you Sue for sharing this with us!

Our stay at Bear Beach was spectacular! A bald eagle greeted us as we arrived (can't beat that). The house was perfect, and as many previous reviewers state, it had everything we needed and more. The beach was amazing, absolutely secluded, where you could just sit and read a book, take a snooze, or explore. One night we were visited by a porcupine at the beach, who didn't have a care in the world. We did a bit of exploring, visiting Roques Bluff, Jasper Beach, Campobello Island, and Monica's Chocolates, but other than that just relaxed at the house. I wish we were able to stay longer!

This is our fourth stay at Bear Beach and it has become like a beloved second home to us. It is the most amazing place to unwind. There is absolute privacy and quiet, with gorgeous views of the bay and sunsets. Everything needed is at the house and Sue is the best host ever. Our dogs think it is paradise with daily swims and romps on the beach. There are wonderful places to explore nearby, without the summer crowds found in most on Maine now. We love it.

Like my in my title it can’t be put into words , the property hands down is the most beautiful that I’ve ever stayed at truly amazing! And it doesn’t feel like a rental , it actually feels like a cozy home away from home ! Thank you sue

Cabin could not be more beautiful. Scenery is spectacular. All beds were wonderful. (Didn't try the 4 twins in the loft.)
Daughter fell on the rocks half way through the stay, so our travels were limited. Going to take a while to heal, unfortunate part of the wilderness.
Cabin was perfect. Our prayers for the family on the loss of Jim. Thank you for sharing ya'll's dream with us.

We were hoping for a wonderfully relaxing stay after a hectic 2023. And Bear Beach definitely delivered. We loved the private beach, especially our 2 year old Vizsla who had the time of his life! The home was so comfortable and situated perfectly for the most amazing sunsets every night we were there!
Little River Lobster Co. has the best lobsters and it’s 10 minutes away.
We hiked every single day and there were so many beautiful and amazing trails and all so close! The views were unbelievable! And Bear Beach is also close to many other places definitely worth visiting; Campobello, Quoddy State Park, Eastpark (very cute little town), Rogue Bluffs, St. Andrews, NB Canada and so many, many more! We loved our time there and cannot wait to return!

We are so grateful for Sue & her family sharing their home with our family for this trip. The house is on the end of a quiet road, which just adds to its charm. You don’t see neighbors, aside from the one dog from down the road who came to visit twice while out for a walk. We explored many of the local hiking trails with our dogs, who also got to join us on vacation! (I think they may have enjoyed themselves even more than we did) After booking the trip over a year ago, it met the expectations we set for a long-awaited trip. The stars at night, private beach, fresh local seafood, hiking trails.. we wish the week didn’t go by so quickly!

This vacation was exactly what we needed. it was beautiful, quiet, & secluded. We needed to get away & be totally removed from our cares for a time. We thought about nothing & did not feel compelled to be perpetually on duty & on task. Totally fit the bill.

We absolutely loved our stay at Bear Beach. The house was perfect for our family get-together. It was well appointed with everything we needed. The basement was a great hangout area for the kids, and the sauna was an amazing treat in the brisk evenings. We knew from the listing and photos about the beach, but we were still blown away when we saw it in person. The Bold Coast area is truly special, no crowds and charming towns and harbors. We were in Bar Harbor for a day and couldn’t believe the crowds..we felt very lucky to be in such a quiet yet beautiful area. Would definitely love to return one day!

This is our third year staying at Bear Beach in June. It has become our time to unwind and sink into total relaxation. The seclusion, private beach, rhythm of the tides, vivid sunsets, and dog-friendliness set it apart from other vacation rentals. We had seals come right up to the shore this year and lots of Eiders and Loons. We do make an occasional trip to Machias, for Riverside Take-out and the French Cellar. There are also some wonderful Bold Coast hikes and Lubec and Quoddy Head. Our dogs think that they are in heaven and end the week in exhausted bliss. Sue is a wonderful, responsive host and we are so glad that she shares this place with others. We'll be back next year.

It was a beautiful spot to spend a week and enjoy the surroundings both in the area and at the cabin. Complete privacy not only at the cabin but the beach and walks near the cabin. The location is fantastic for day trips to the many wonderful places to visit, explore, hike or eat. Also the sunsets are fantastic!

My fiancé and I have never visited and stayed in Maine before. We were told how special the Bold Coast is, and decided to vacation for 8 days there. We found this location on VRBO, and set our vacation plans. I travel extensively for my job and have been a lot of places around the country. When we arrived and saw the absolutely beautiful home and surroundings, we were completely blown away! It is the most beautiful and peaceful setting you can imagine. It is very secluded, and the accommodations are top notch! Everything you need is in the cabin/home, and has all the updated luxuries you can imagine. Has an incredible fireplace, and the sauna is an added plus. Sue, the owner of the property, was so helpful and responsive and went out of her way to give us all the information about the house and things to do and see in the area.
My fiancé and I hated to leave, and absolutely Okan in returning as soon as possible! Highly recommend this place for anyone looking to truly have the best experience on the Bold Coast!! Thank you again Sue for sharing your home with us!

Bear Beach Maine is a wonderful getaway. The house is beautiful, comfortable and cozy. Nestled at the end of a dead end road, there is no light or noise pollution. We have rented many houses and this house, by far, had everything you would need including in a very well-equipped kitchen. We enjoyed many walks on the beach, playing pool and sitting by the fire.
The owner is super nice, provided great information and was easily reachable if we needed anything. We look forward to returning to Bear Beach Maine in the near future.

What a great way to experience Downeast Maine. Cozy yet spacious house with amazing views of Holmes Bay. We took many walks down the beach with our dogs and cooked some epic meals in the well appointed kitchen. A vacation destination for all that want to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy Maine. Jim and Sue are very gracious hosts!

It is unanimous, we would all stay at Bear Beach again. We are not able to come together as a family very often and this was the perfect place to catch up with each other. What a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the best Maine has to offer. The house provides wonderful gathering space as well as privacy. The front deck was used daily for cocktail hour, cribbage, even a little dancing one evening. The outdoor shower was a treat after an afternoon on the beach. Gorgeous hikes, fresh lobsters from Little River Lobster Co, several trips made to Monica's Chocolates, so many good times. Bear Beach is Peace on Earth.

Fun Family Adventure
The property far exceeded our expectations! Me & my husband took our 4 adult children for a family bonding vacation. Everyone slept comfortably, plenty of space to have fun, loved the sauna, beautiful views, amazing beach and lots to do within 45 minute drive. We loved hiking at Quoddy State Park, downtown Lubec, village of cutler, whale watching tour, but our favorite parts were hikes along the cottage beach and kayaking to Hog island. We learned so much about the Tide and how it dictates the day and what plans you make. Everything was just so beautiful and all our friends are asking for more info about of stay. Looking forward to coming back someday 🦞

Wonderful stay with family!
My husband and I had stayed at Bear Beach before so we knew what to expect. As family members arrived it was fun to hear their reaction . . . all great. We filled the house up with grand children ages 3 - 17 years old as well as our adult kids and in-law kids. Discovering treasures on the beach was enjoyed by all. A family trip to Quoddy Head and celebrating our 50 th wedding Anniversary with family all week created life long memories.

Amazing!
This was absolutely an amazing property (pictures don't do it justice) as well as an amazing experience from first booking until leaving or "home away from home"! We have taken very few family vacations and decided it is time. Bring inexperienced, I ask way more than my share of questions to Sue, property owner, and each and every time she responded promptly and with such detail. Her recommendations and info was just what our family needed to have the very best time together! The adventures and laughter was priceless and forever will be one of my best memories! Shannon M

Was a perfect secluded place to hang out with family. There was no noise other than birds chirping. No cars, trucks, trains, or planes. Plenty of firewood for inside and outside fires. Sauna with outdoor shower a plus. Home was very well stocked for cooking lobsters for a large group. Not far from Eastport and Lubec for day trips. We were there before Memorial Day therefore no outfitters were open to book excursions, but enjoyed the time with fewer tourists. We would return same time another year.

A beautiful home in a quiet, remote area with private beach access. The tides are dramatic and the beach scenery is so tranquil. The clawfoot tub, sauna, and two-way fireplace made for an incredibly relaxing stay. I feel restored after our trip. Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!

Bear Beach Bliss
We will always remember and cherish our February vacation "Bear Beach Bliss"! Our family of four and our pug did not have too far to travel, as we are from Freeport, Maine - only 3 1/2 hours away, but it felt like a world away, and that is what we were looking for. A magical winter wonderland escape to rejuvenate, bond as a family, and make memories to last a lifetime. All boxes were checked and then some!!! Bear Beach is a dream and we feel so blessed that we were able to experience it. The house was so inviting and cozy and fit our family's needs perfectly. We never left the property once we arrived because we would have been too sad to do so considering our stay was just a long weekend. We bundled up for walks in the snow-covered, tree frosted, woods and roamed the beach looking for sea glass and heart rocks. We spent countless hours relaxing by the fire reading and talking, we thoroughly enjoyed the sauna, our two boys (ages 9 and 14) were obsessed with the pool table, we made some wonderful meals, enjoyed watching the snow fall all around us during a snowstorm, watched a stunning sunset, and just generally soaked up this monumentally special place. Sue and Jim, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sharing this treasure of yours with our family. We hope to return someday and make more memories!

The Ultimate in Peace and Tranquility
Private, incredibly quiet, beautiful views of the water. The Cabin is well equipped with comfortable beds, a super kitchen, brand new outdoor grill, and enough games & books to occupy a crowd! The owners have poured their heart and soul into this lovely spot and it shows. (We had no communication with the property manager, but the form insisted I check a box!)

Rest for the Soul
If you need a place to restore your soul, look no further than Bear Beach. This property is magical. No street noise or traffic lights or road rage. You’re enveloped in nature, pure and simple. The only sounds are those of the birds, water, and wind. Watch the sunset on the beach only steps away and feel truly connected with the universe.

First we cannot thank Sue & Jim enough for sharing their beautiful home with us. The location was private, the house is beautiful, clean and comfortable. We felt at home the moment we walked in. Well our pup was a little unsure of the bear next to the TV so he stared it down for about 20 minutes and gave up We didn't leave the property except to get lobster as we were just so happy to unwind and enjoy exploring the beach, woods, sauna and kayaking. It was pure heaven.I was quite surprised with how well stocked everything was from cookware, dinnerware, pantry items towels etc. It was just like being home. We loved reading through the book of guests and my kids enjoyed writing in it. Out of all our vacations this was voted a "keeper". I've already been looking to book for next year!
