Brand new hot tub is here along with an expanded deck area for you to enjoy it! Please take advantage of our special. This is a new property that I have just purchased. Come on out while this introductory special is in effect. All I ask is that you provide me with some constructive feedback so we can make this property even more wonderful than it already is.
We just added ROKU TV with all the apps you can imagine. Just enter your check out date and you can use your subscription information to watch whatever you want. The system will sign you out automatically on the day that you leave.
THE CABIN: I have tried to determine when this cabin was built, but have not yet been successful. When you drive up to this cabin, you can imagine how Ruidoso was in the ‘50s and ‘60s when it became known as “The Playground of the Southwest”. If these walls could talk, oh, the stories they could tell. Over the years this cabin has undergone numerous repairs and remodels and today it stands as a reminder of the past while also showing off as a gem of modern technology. The windows have been there for a while and most are stuck from all the coats of paint, but they are reflective of the period.
When you enter the cabin the living room and the kitchen greet you with lovely colors and a décor that is reminiscent of the period during which the cabin was built. The fireplace is decorative only. We have a flat screen TV. Maybe one day I will figure out how to integrate a dishwasher in the mix, but until then please enjoy the charm of the 1950s.
The path from this area to the master bedroom is either through the kitchen or the bathroom. The floor plan is really simple. That’s how they built ‘em back then. The bedroom is comfy and warm. The knotty pine paneling provides a authentic log cabin feel. Just relax in the comfy king bed with the retro quilt and if the temperature is right, open the window and let the sound of the Rio Ruidoso lull you to sleep.
Oh did somebody say AIR CONDITIONING? The main floor of the cabin has complete climate control provided by two window units. One in the master bedroom and one in the living room. They are capable of providing heat as well as air conditioning that will flat freeze you out of there if you want it to!
Next we go back out the front door and to the BUNK HOUSE basement which is under the north end (furthest from the street) of the house. As you enter the basement door you find the bunkhouse. The two twin beds are really comfy and the décor is right off the ranch! This recently remodeled area of the house also contains the washer / dryer.
The BUNK HOUSE is a unique and fantastic area which will create lasting memories of adventure and independence for your children. Please understand this is not a place for children that need to be in a bedroom next to yours or senior citizens who are adverse to stairs or need to use the restroom in the middle of the night. Between the main front door and the BUNK HOUSE there are 9 steps outside. It has its own “front door” and no bathroom. In my personal opinion I think this is a great space for "tweens", teens and young folks.
THE PARKING: Oh this is the secret sauce. 95% of the time parking is not a problem. You can park in the public lot anytime night or day. It is just to the west of the cabin. I will put a parking pass in the form of a postcard in the cabin for you. With that you can park one vehicle in front of 221 Rio which is right next door (east side). You see most times in Ruidoso the public parking lot is not quite full, but during holidays and special events, parking is indeed at a premium, so it’s really nice to have that private parking space.
MID-TOWN: This is where the action is. Restaurants, bars, shops, it is all within a short walk of your front door. No DUI’s while staying here. You can Rock and Roll at Quarters or Country and Western dance at WPS (Win Place or Show). You can close the place down and walk home.
If late night is not your thing, you have a choice of five of the best restaurants in Ruidoso within a two block walk. If you don’t like to go to restaurants, you have some of the most amazing clothes shops within two blocks.
If you don’t like any of the above, then there’s always wine and desert! Yes within one block there is an amazing cupcake shop and a lovely selection of wine to taste and take home. I can go into more detail later!
THE BACKDOOR: Every coin has two sides and this is no exception. You have all the fun and excitement of Mid-town out your front door, and all the peace and quiet of nature out your back door. Yes, there is a little grey area in the middle, the rest of the tourists that are parking in the public lot can look at you in the yard relaxing – just remember that they are just jealous. We put a nice curtain on the hot tub to afford you some needed privacy!
Back to Nature awaits you out the back door. We have a lovely porch with a great view of the river and plenty of comfy furniture to sit on and relax while enjoying the wonderful climate. There is also a gas grill there for your outdoor cooking pleasure.
There are some wonderful new steps leading down to a new porch that is just feet from the river. I am trying to get some trout to come hang out there. We’ll see how that goes in future years.
We have a great fenced yard for the kids and the dogs to run around in and play and there is a brand new hot tub to soak the soreness out of those muscles after a hard day of hiking, skiing, riding, or shopping. If you do bring a pet there will be a $85 pet fee charged for doing so.
We certainly hope that you will choose our little RETRO ON THE RIVER when you plan your vacation to Ruidoso. We have done what we can to make it a wonderful experience for you. Thanks again. We hope to see you soon. - Reed
Entire property I'm usually not on site, but am easy to get a hold of if you need anything. Hustle bustle during the day when the shops are open and then nice and quiet and peaceful at night. Walking is great from this location! Other alternatives include driving your car or calling Lincoln Co. Transit service.
Pets – yes, your pets are welcome, just please when you leave the property make it look as though there was no pet there. Pick up the waste and clean up any excess fur. We do charge a pet fee ($85/stay for up to 2 pets and $150/stay for up to 4 pets) because they do cause some wear and tear, but we know they are important to you, and we want to accommodate your whole family! Vrbo does not add the pet fee automatically to my reservation software. It will be a separate transaction after your booking is completed. Just let me know if you have a pet with you.
Safety: Property has 2 cameras: 1 located over the front door pointed at the front yard. 1 located over the downstairs basement door and pointed at the yard and hot tub area. These cameras will be recording during your stay.
Explanation about the damage deposit: Your reservation may require a damage deposit. If you book via Airbnb, there is no up front deposit, however if there is damage, you will be charged after your stay. If you are booking on my website, the checkout process will be easy. However, if you are booking on VRBO, they will show it as a "Refundable deposit paid at property". That is not accurate. The deposit is simply a credit card hold which is authorized on the day that you arrive and then automatically drops off 7 days after you leave. If you leave with no damage, you will never notice it. If there is damage, I will notify you of what I have found prior to making any type of claim against that hold. I'm sorry that VRBO describes it that way, but I have brought it to their attention, and they say it is the only thing that can be done with their system. I think they are just putting the square peg in the round hole. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Location, location, location! Clean, cozy, comfy. Would definitely stay here again. You absolutely can’t beat the location. Hot tub was really nice. Super cute cabin. We even had two visitors on our last day! (Two deer!)

The location was amazing! We loved walking to the brewery, shops, dinner. The hot tub and river access were my boys favorite part. Reed was very helpful and answered any questions I had. The fenced yard was great for our pup. We would def stay at Reed's cabin again!

We loved our stay in this cabin! It was perfect for two people and a fabulous location in midtown Ruidoso on the river. We loved the retro feel of the home and the back deck off the master bedroom is fabulous! Early morning coffee listening to the river sounds and evening glasses of wine enjoyed here quickly made this our favorite spot on the property! Property is very well maintained. We would definitely stay again!

Really fantastic stay, great location right on the river! Exactly as described by the owner and the other reviews. The hot tub was fantastic, the deck was perfect, and the bed was very comfortable. The owner was proactively helpful to ensure we had all the info needed to have a great stay. And we did. I would recommend this place to anyone!

We greatly enjoyed this retro feel of the old cabin nestled in midtown Ruidoso. With the running river bordering the property made it feel like you were next to a mountain stream and not downtown! No need to ever get back in the car because you are within walking distance to all the shops, the eateries, winery and breweries! Super clean and welcoming! We hope to stay here again in the near future.

Retro on the River was the perfect Ruidoso Retreat! The inside was cozy and had everything we needed for our stay. The newly remodeled bathroom with the rain head shower was great. The property is between the river and just behind the main street making it a perfect location to easily walk to shops and dining. We even saw mule deer down at the river. We loved unwinding at night in the wonderful hot tub! Reed was an awesome host. We’ll definitely return!

My husband and I stayed with our 9 month old. When we booked we do not remember the listing saying to get to the 2nd bedroom you had to go outside. We wanted a 2 bedroom so we could put our baby in that room to sleep and we could be out in the living room or do what we wanted while she slept. We had to adjust our mindset on how we were going to manage, but it worked out ok.
We did struggle with temperature regulation the first night but then we played around with things and figured it out. It comes with quirks of staying in a retro cabin.
The location is great. You can walk to everything you need, the hot tub was perfect to unwind in after the baby fell asleep and our monitor worked great outside. Parking was easy. The shower was great. The kitchen had everything we needed.

My husband & I stayed her for a weekend of relaxing in the mountains and it was perfect! Amazing location so we could walk and enjoy the main strip for eating and shopping. Parking was never an issue and the house itself is warm and charming! The newly remodeled bathroom was perfect for a hot shower after coming in from the cold after a dip in the hot tub! We enjoyed the snowy views from the various windows and patios. I am a big researcher and can honestly tell you to look no further, this is the place you want to stay in Ruidoso! We definitely plan to come back!

The location was great having the main street on one side and the creek and trees on the other. The cabin was fully stocked with everything you could need and more. It was very clean.

Very charming cabin on the river with hot tub. Great outdoor spaces, and right in town.

This cabin gives you a taste of “Old Ruidoso” with all of the modern conveniences that we expect today!
The cabin was very clean and well appointed, kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom looked freshly remodeled!
The back porch was perfect, and there is also a nice surprise when you look up from the porch toward the cabin!
The hot tub was great! Loved the privacy of the curtains, and we had no issues with its location in regards to the parking lot.
The absolute best location if you enjoy Midtown! We did not have to drive anywhere; there are several sets of stairs you can take from the parking lot that land you in the heart of Midtown!
The host of this property, Reed, was the absolute most helpful, and communicative of any VRBO properties we have stayed at, that gets an A+ in itself!
A GREAT PROPERTY!

We love the cabin it was so peaceful, clean, cozy, and talked with everything we needed. We loved how close it was to everything in town. We enjoyed walking and then able to come back to the house for a relaxing nap or hot tub time while listening to the river.

Wife and I had a little getaway without the littles. Cute little cabin right off Mechem that puts you in walking distance of all the shopping you could want. We snagged a cool little painting from one of the galleries.
But when you are back at the cabin it feels very secluded and private. Access down to the small creek in the back and a hot tub to soak after all the walking. We loved our stay and will def come back with the whole family.

The house is located on a small back street along one of Ruidoso's main drags. We arrived late afternoon in one of the usual daily rainstorms. My initial impression wasn't the best. You have to go down a few steps, thru a gate, to the front door. This was a little tricky in the rain. But once I got into the house my impression quickly changed. It is a cute, little one bedroom house. I don't know when it was built but it is decorated to earn it's name of Retro Riverfront. The appliances, while new, look retro in color and appearance. The house is furnished in antiques as well. It is a simple floorplan which was perfect for the 2 of us. The king bed is very comfortable. The bathroom had been remodeled lately - the shower head and water pressure were great. We really appreciated having a parking pass to use while we were there. We never had to park in the overflow city lot. And while it is cool there overnight, during the days it got warm so we were glad to have the A/C. Since we didn't need the extra space, we did not check out the bunk house and didn't use the hot tub. We did enjoy sitting on the porch to enjoy the nature sounds and feel the breezes. The river is more of a stream, but it was nice. Since we were only there 2 nights we ate out, though the kitchen was fully stocked with plates, pots & pans. We were able to easily walk to restaurants located only a block away. Even though the house is in mid-town Ruidoso, the property is very quiet and peaceful.

The house was great and exactly what we were looking for. Loved being able to be so close to the shops without giving up the outdoors "lost in the woods" feel. Also got to bring our dogs and they loved it as well. Hot tub was a nice touch at the end of a day of site seeing. Highly recommend and will definitely be back to stay in this quaint cozy cabin again.

This place was great for my family! The communication to the host was amazing. We were right in the middle of the village and shopping and restaurants were super convenient. My kids loved the stairs down to the river and were excited to see deer in the morning and evening. The hot tub was relaxing and sitting on the porch and deck were so relaxing. My family wants to come back immediately and begged to stay longer. I loved the retro appliances. And everything was perfect for our little family vacation.

This cabin is by far our family favorite! It is cozy, cute, comfortable and extremely welcoming. Conveniently, located within walking distance to nearby shops and restaurants. Reed (owner) was extremely attentive to all of our needs during our 6 day visit. The cabin itself has a warm vintage feel to it- made me feel like I was staying at my grandma’s home. The king size bed definitely a plus! The sound of river water- early morning-while sipping my coffee sitting on the deck- oh my -what a delight! The hot tub is absolutely amazing -nice way to relax sore muscles. Our fur baby enjoyed enclosed yard. Big thanks Rick, Hershel and Diane.
We will definitely be back to visit this one of a kind- precious comfy cabin. ❤️

Quaint place with a rustic cabin feel. But close to downtown resteraunts and shops. Saw wild horses in the town of Ruidoso. Also elk. If u want to see elk go to golf course then down hull road. Saw heards of elk every time.
Good sleeping very comfortable bed. River noise to lull u to sleep. We never went into the lower part of cabin with washer dryer and bedroom.
Hot tub was nice at end of the day. The description is correct the cabin feels retro like going back in time but with modern convinces.

Very adorable and clean home. The location was perfect for walking to 'downtown' entertainment. Great place to stay if you are going to be out on the strip, but still close enough to outdoor activities. We would stay there again.

Everything went well . It was just as described and the pictures are spot on. The king sized bed was incredibly comfortable. The shower was also perfect. Will definitely stay again

We absolutely loved our stay at Retro on the River. We had planned to do several activities, but it was VERY windy. So...we were in the cabin a lot and loved every minute. Within walking distance to great food, drinks, places to watch NFL, and fun restaurants for adults and kids.
The owner checks to make sure everything is excellent and provided us with multiple parking options. This was very helpful since Ruidoso was quite busy.
We would definitely stay here again! THANK YOU for sharing your cabin with us.

Reed was responsive and really great to work with. The house was perfect for our family of four. The king sized bed was so comfortable and the sheets were amazingly soft. The kitchen had everything we ever went to look for and the bunk room was great for the kids. As mentioned, the bunk house has no bathroom but it was not a problem for us.
We were super close to snow tubing at Winter Park and several hikes. Grindstone lake was beautiful and super close too. Being able to walk to shops and restaurants was a huge plus for us.
I’m sure we will be back. We loved it.

Excellent, great yard, hot tub, 2 decks, and views over river, and yet, steps, or just feet from Mid Town Shops, best of all worlds. Retro Cabin had all we needed and wanted, used a blender a lot. Reed is great at communication, in fact after staying months at a time yearly for last 14 years, at places like this, he communicated most, and best, says a lot. Due to him any property he has would be top of list to stay at. Thank you!

We stayed at Retro Rio because of the location on the River and in town and because it was a great yard for the Dogs. We also loved the spa (very clean). The kitchen is well equipped and we enjoyed sitting on the porch above the River watching the Elk wander through. It has good WiFiand a nice TV in the living room ( not the bed room). Clean sheets and towels and a king sized bed with what seemed like new pillows. The down sides are that the bathroom is cramped and the bath looked gross, needing to be updated/replaced. We didn’t enjoy ROKU. Also the floors and baseboards needed a thorough cleaning but what can I complain about a dog friendly rental. Overall we hand a great time

The host is great at communicating/responding, the property is very well kept and it feels secluded even though you are only yards from all the shopping on Sudderth Drive. Would definitely recommend this hidden gem.

Mini family vacation to Ruidoso with the 3 year old and two dogs. The cabin has everything you need and is located exactly where you would want to be in Ruidoso. Walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. The best part was being able to walk down to the river from the cabin. Despite location, it was very quiet. Thanks again, we will be back.

We were welcomed in, despite our early arrival, and it was easy to gain access to the cabin on our own. We were impressed with the cleanliness of the place, the retro, inviting atmosphere and how well equipped the kitchen and bath are. Loved the hot tub, back porch with the Rio River running by, birds chirping, deer and elk roaming close by. The bed is comfortable. The fenced, spacious yard was perfect for the dog, along with a park just a short walk down the street where we could throw the ball. Shopping and dining was just steps away. The owner was attentive to our needs via text, and we were very comfortable staying at his cabin.

Great location! Loved being so close to the shops & the walkway by the river!

The best part of our stay was relaxing in the jacuzzi in the evening and a small herd of elk approached the fence line with one coming in the yard to munch on some leaves of a tree. What a sight!
