I spent a week at this hostel and really enjoyed my stay. The staff was very personable and helpful. Per other's comments about the house being older, it is true but everything worked well and the wifi was excellent. Adored the coffee! The hostel was cleaned daily and throughout the day. Excellent resources available on buses, attractions, tours etc. Neighborhood was safe and near the university so a good variety of restaurants nearby.

Bed was uncomfortable, the worst during 3 weeks, but bunk beds were ok. Men, who served breakfast asked us how many pancakes we want, we said 4, because we are family of 4 and then he angrily replied: But they are big!and bring them with unhappy face. It’s ridiculous, that in Costa Rica they charge even for small kids, that don’t have their own bed, but children don’t be pretending to eat breakfast

This hostel is a good choice for anyone who wants a private room for a reasonable price. The person at the reception was really helpful. The hostel was furnished and decorated in a unique and colorful way.
There was all the time lots of traffic on the street behind the window of the room and that's why it was not an ideal place for sleeping especially because the window could not be closed.
There wasn't any kind of mirror in the room.

very clean, nice little seating area, well equipped kitchen, really nice pancakes for breakfast, good wifi

We really liked the hostel. It was a nice vibe in general and it was very clean. The staff was also really nice and the breakfast was amezing!!
4.3
breakfast was good and quite ample for most people. the location is great if you don't want to be directly in the center, but close enough that its still accessable.
wifi was usable, but not always the best signal for calls.

Loved the breakfast! Really friendly staff. Cute bunk bed room. We felt safe in that area and could go out and walk to dinner.
Not enough bathrooms!! I had to wait for 30 minutes to use the bathroom in the morning. There was 3 of us all waiting. Long wait for a shower in the evening as well.

The location was good, the room was good, but at one point they seemed paper thin and I feared I would not be able to sleep but luckely the guests in the next room were not noisy at night.
The host. He spoke English, however would answer my initial email questions about in Spanish. When I arrived at the hostel, he was not friendly then asked for my passport in Spanish and when I did not answer immediately, he asked me how long I had been in Costa Rica. I answered thinking he was actually being friendly only to have him retort with a question about how I could not know the word "passport" after having been in CR for weeks. I paid for 3 nights but left the next morning because I could not stand to have to see his face all the time after this. Worst Christmas Eve ever. Also you can not make your own coffee before 8am.

Love the breakfast pancake every morning. Ouiet time is strictly enforced.
Shower drainage flow was not good, it flooded. Stove and hot water kettle are out of sight once the kitchen is closed, having hot water for coffee is impossible which is important for me because I worked at night due to time difference.

clean and comfortable in a nice area. huge breakfast and free coffee. a bit empty though so not your place if you want to socialize ;)

- safe and convenient location for walking to bario escalante (the trendy area)
- could book a taxi transfer
- nice breakfast
- not the cheapest but good for San Jose
- there was a fumigation when we were there and we were not told for what but had to leave for a few hours - when we got back our bags were on the bed so maybe for bedbugs?
- did notice some insects about the place

The location and people I met there. Other than than there was not much to say. I met some good people there. It was close to the mall, etc.
The room was small and no window. The staff was not polite. The staff could not get things done right. Almost everyone I talked to did not like this place.

Our host was friendly, breakfast provided, the room was better than most hostels we’ve stayed during our trip and it is located in an area of the city with lots of bars and good options around

I really liked the cleanliness and the friendly staff. Great location to discover San Jose. Much appreciated no smoking rule which is strictly enforced .
Can't think of anything

this was a good location in a safer area. close enough to some bars if you need a drink and restaurants that overlook the mountains.

Large room, everything was relatively clean, good breakfast
Owner wasn't very knowledgeable or forthcoming with information. Not a fan of anyone smoking inside of which the owner made clear was what he did. We booked a double but ended up in a family room which may sound nice but was surrounded by the reception, communal area and busy road. Glass missing from windows too so the noise levels were very high. Also the long term guests or staff of a full family of 7 to 8 were in the communal area from breakfast to 10pm at night shouting and playing games. No hostel atmosphere and very noisy un-inviting for guests. Would not recommend for solo travelers.

The night was confortable as well as the uncomplicated check in. For all sorts of questions about San Jose and travaling around Central America
we could talk to the very friendly English speaking host of the In The Wind Hostel and also to other travalers and guests in the lovely atrium garden while enjoying the amazing pancake breakfast. In all it´s an ideal and safe place to start your jurny in San Jose or even in Costa Rica, if your not looking for some luxary hotel.
If your arriving late, you´ll have probably a problem with the at 10 pm closing check in. The rooms have no aircondition. The hostel area in San Jose looks a little rough if your are nwe in Costa Rica but it´s safe. Nonetheless travaling with a car could make you norvous when your looking for a closed parkingarea.

Very clean hostel. Very cool and lots of artwork. It's very conveniently located right next to the mall. It's very close to the center of town and the airport as well. It offers nice private rooms at a much better price than other hotels in the area and you get the same things with/for it. But also they offer coffee and breakfast which is just an added bonus. I've always enjoyed my stays here and will always come back. Also for a Costa Rican hostel, the common areas are quite large there's plenty of room for whatever. Sometimes they are too small but this one is big.
Can't really think of anything. Off the top of my head.

The location was nice. Quiet.
Everyday was the same breakfast- pancake.
The owner was rude because we arrived before the check in time.
Pillows smelled dirty- as they hadn't been washed.
There were hours at which we couldn't use the kitchen

The perfect place to stay in San Jose! Absolutely amazing pancake breakfast and delicious coffee, great kitchen to use, very central location. The rooms are super comfortable, would absolutely recommend!

Price was right. Great breakfast.
Like stepping back into the 80's but with WiFi.
4.3
Nice area, friendly host, great breakfast and very clean. We also appreciated the free parking just outside our room on the street.
The only reason why we gave a 9 out of 10 is the tiny room. We had exceptional big luggage and it was fine for a couple of nights, but even with two bags each we would have felt a bit crammed. At least there are sitting areas outside the room.

good location, felt very safe

Very clean and very convenient for a first stop over straight off the plane. Marc helped arrange a taxi to pick me up and the single room is great value for money if, like me, you need some decent sleep after 24hrs of traveling!
Can't think of anything! I couldn't get the lock on my room to properly lock but I felt very safe and was too tired to battle with it. That's the only thing I can think of.
4.3
- clean kitchen
- the breakfast is extremely unhealthy. A pancake with a syrup every day, no other options.
- some rooms were so dark, it was impossible to read and no lamps so I had to use my phone’s lamp to read something

pancake breakfast 🥞👌
good host. nice placement. good bed.
4.3
Pancakes for breakfast, the kitchen was always spotless, everything in general was very clean. The staff was also very helpful and kind. Really good vibes here, it was hard to leave.
The mattresses are uncomfortable. If you have back issues, just be aware. You can feel the steel frame.
4.3
Appreciated the cleanliness, quietness and the huge well made pancake for breakfast made by a very nice cook.
We didn’t stay long enough to noticed any dislikes.
