About this house rental
Mace House is a beautiful family home in a quiet neighborhood, on the mainland side of the tidal creek at Pawleys, where moss hangs from live oaks and deer stroll in the evening. Located on the mainland across the marsh from the south end of the island, this house has a private dock on the frontage along the marsh and is still owned by the family that built it in 1972.
A large screened porch with hammock, swing, and rocking chairs overlooks the tidal marsh where the private dock gives access for crabbing, fishing, kayaking, and watching birds - egrets, herons, and osprey in the marsh and painted buntings and whippoorwills in the woods. Glass doors across the main room let you enjoy the glorious views in the comfort of AC or heat, or you can open them and bring the sea breezes into the house.
Under the house, sinks and showers let you clean up before bringing the catch into the roomy kitchen, and a big fireplace makes the great room cozy for cooler times. A short drive or boat ride, depending on the tide, takes you to the historic Pawley's beach for swimming, surfing, and walking. (Kayaks are available to rent for $75 per week for one, $50 for each additional, up to a total of six available.)
This is a perfect place for a family to get away from the world and spend time together with our little collection of books and games, or with those you bring yourself. The house is large enough to offer privacy as well.
Nearby are world-class golfing, shopping, historic homes and churches, and restaurants galore. The beautiful sculptures and gardens at Brookgreen are only a few miles north. Fifteen minutes takes you to Georgetown, half an hour to Myrtle Beach, and an hour to Charleston.
We rent by the week only--no short-term rentals. We do offer a special on month long rentals in January and February.
A few things to note: the house is not suitable for children under 5, as unfenced deep water and open railings on stairs make it dangerous. Also, the house is on stilts since it is near the water, and that means that renters must climb about 12 feet of stairs to enter, so could be difficult for people with mobility issues.

Lovely house with everything needed to enjoy both home and marsh. Great AC, wonderful view, able to enjoy the marsh on the traditional low country pier and via several kayaks, wonderful screened in elevated front porch (with fans, rocking chairs, hammock, and swing), close to public beach via car or kayak and to top it off, a quick and responsive property manager. Nothing to complain about.

We just stayed at Mace house and we were so pleased. Everything was as listed, if not better. The kitchen was so well stocked with everything we could need. The area was so peaceful. My parents, husband, two sons and I all enjoyed the house very much. We saw so much wildlife while sitting on the dock and screened in back porch. We all relaxed listening to the birds, ocean and rain from the porch as well. Unfortunately, we were there during tropical storm/hurricane Debbie, however Nancy emailed and kept us well informed of the weather and what we needed to do in case of flooding. A neighbor even came by to make sure we knew where to move our cars and if we needed any help. Nancy was always very helpful and quick to respond to any questions we had leading up to and during our stay. Despite the weather, we had an amazing time full of memories. It was definitely a home away from home.

I'll start by saying that I've never given a negative review on VRBO, but I want to give an honest picture of our stay. The location of the house is great. Our family loved the dock and the short drive to the beach. We enjoyed fishing for crab, kayaking, and exploring the marsh. It's close to many great restaurants and activities. The house itself was not what we expected. The furniture is very old and falling apart, there was a ton of dog hair under the couches, master bed, and on the stairs. The air intake was completely covered with dust and pet fur. The throw pillows on the beds and mattress pads were badly stained. The glassware is cloudy and etched from years of use. Overall it didn't feel like it was setup to be a rental. If you go in knowing that your renting for the location and not the house, you'll enjoy your stay. If you're looking for clean and updated accommodations, this is not the place. I know the host will say we should have contacted them, but it feels awkward to ask them to have someone come clean the whole house as soon as we arrive.

I don’t like to give negative comments, however, if you’re looking for cleanliness, good mattresses. And comfortable living area seating you would be disappointed at this home. That said, the back porch was great!

The property was as advertised. Nice area and very quiet. Nice yard and access to the marsh for fishing and crabbing. Highly recommend.

My husband and I usually spend some time in Pawley's Island every February. We've rented condos, but this time decided to rent a house so we could share it with our kids and 18-month-old granddaughter. It was the perfect spot for our family. It is located in a quiet spot with friendly neighbors. The place was very clean, roomy, furnished comfortably and had every possible kitchen appliance and tool you could ask for -even a salad spinner!! The screened in porch was a great place to enjoy a coffee in the morning or a nightcap in the evening while watching the moon sparkling on the water. It took a day or two for us to get the thermostat just right but, that was a minor annoyance. All in all, I would highly recommend Mace House for a short- or long-term stay.

What a lovely, relaxing week in the comfy Mace House. We really enjoyed the homey feel and the beautiful marsh views from the roomy back porch. Every amenity we needed was there and we hope to return someday! Highly recommend the Mace House and its host, Nancy.

This wonderful home feels like you’re returning to a family vacation spot. With a perfect location on the marsh, the porch provides relaxing views of the water and wildlife with the roar of the ocean drifting in from the east. The dock is great for embarking on a water journey or just relaxing and bird watching. The main room is spacious and looks out across the yard, on to the marsh and on to the dunes. The neighborhood is quiet and yet close to shops, grocery stores and restaurants.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mace House. The house is clean, quiet and located in a great place for relaxation and birding. It is a few miles outside of town, so a car is essential. The home is comfortable, roomy and relaxing. We especially enjoyed the screen porch. There is everything you need for cooking at home, but excellent restaurants nearby.
The purpose of our trip was birding and the area did not disappoint. We visited Litchfield State Park every day, went to Brookgreen Gardens 5 times, enjoyed the Marshwalk at Myrrells Inlet, and walking on the docks in Georgetown. And lots in between. There are plenty of other activities in the area such as golf and the Boardwalk in Myrtle Beach. But just staying at the house, reading, knitting and walking in the neighborhood was fun too. We had or corgi Willow with us and she had a great time, too!
The homeowners were easy to contact and addressed the one issue we had immediately. We would not hesitate staying at Mace House again. The quiet neighborhood on a marsh was just what we were looking for, and we loved our stay.

We had a wonderful stay at this house! The house was very clean on arrival, and the accommodations were excellent. We rented the kayaks as well and had an absolute ball with them. When you rent this house, definitely rent the kayaks as well. Thanks to these owners for allowing us a fantastic vacation!

This property is beautifully situated on the marsh overlooking Pawleys Island. The sunrises are magnificent from the back deck and dock. Additionally, the house is clean and well equipped. If you like to kayak, this is the place for you. The property is conveniently located on a marsh creek and is well equipped for kayaking. The grounds are also well kept and beautiful. We had a wonderful and restful two weeks. We had our coffee each morning watching the sunrise over the marsh. It is only a 10 minute drive to the beach or kayak across the marsh.

Mace house
Everything was as described. Beautiful marsh views and access. We watched the sunrise over the water everyday drinking coffee on the porch. Close enough to all the local restaurants and attractions but off the beaten path to enjoy seclusion and quiet nights.

Lovely gem on marsh
Lovely older house with open floor plan downstairs and huge elevated screen porch facing marsh. Floating dock with kayaks. Easy access to Pawleys Island, Muriel’s Inket, Georgetown, Brookstone Gardens and Huntington Beach state park. House on each side are rentals but neighborhood is isolated and very quiet and friendly. A great place to chill or as center of activities. Host was great!

Wonderful Marsh House
We had a spectacular time at this wonderful place. The house had everything we needed and we felt right at home. The kitchen was well supplied, the living room very comfortable, and the beds were great to sleep in! Best sleep in a vrbo ever! Our favorite place was probably the screened in porch. Watching the sunsets was a real treat!

A perfect place to relax!
We loved watching the sunrise from the dock, napping in the hammock and swinging on the porch swing as the sun went down. The creek is perfect at high tide for kayaking. It was so easy to communicate with Nancy and we look forward to staying at Mace House again!

Beautiful retreat on the marsh
We were happily surprised at the house and location which seemed better than advertised. The interior had a lot of lovely details such as the scenic paintings done by the family which added to the welcoming atmosphere. We found the house perfectly suited us for privacy and ease of access to our favorite local activities (beach, Brookgreen Gardens, Huntington State Park). One word of advice: as of June 2021, it's difficult to impossible to get a table at a good local restaurant. If you want to eat out, I suggest you call several days to a week ahead. Thank you for sharing your family vacation home with us!

Spring Break Stay
Our family of 4 spent a week at Mace house. Nancy was easy to work with, directions to the property were accurate and check in was easy. We enjoyed the fact that the property wasn't directly on the beach, but getting to the beach was easy. We rented her kayaks which our girls really liked. It is easy to see that this is a well loved family home. A few new couch cushions and a deep clean of overlooked nooks and crannies would be appriciated. Over all we enjoyed our first trip to SC and would recommend Mace house.

Quiet, shady retreat on the marsh.
Perfect for our needs. Well equipped kitchen as we rarely eat out. Afternoon naps in the hammock. Reading on the dock with the background of marsh sounds. Great place for relaxing.

Wonderful peaceful stay
We loved the location, the dock, the salt marshes.... it is very beautiful and peaceful. It is a well used family house, so the appliances, kitchen etc. have seen a lot of use.

We loved our stay at Mace House. A beautiful place that you can tell is full of good memories. We certainly have wonderful memories from our time at Pawleys now!

Very Quiet
We enjoyed our stay. The dock was the best part for us. We enjoyed crabbing and it was a great location to set off from in our Kayaks. The nearby beach wasnt crowded and the entire area was very quiet the week we were there. Which is what we wanted.. Peace, quiet, and no people lol.. One thing we would put on our wishlist is to put a king size bed in one of the bedrooms, but that's a personal preference. Even without the king bed we would definitely look at staying in the Mace house again!

Pawleys’s Family Getaway
This property was perfect for a much needed relaxing retreat. It is snuggled on the marsh away from everything at the beach yet very close to the grocery store, shops, & Pawleys beach access. We had a little action with Hurricane Isaisis come through & lots of rain but we still enjoyed family time & making memories. My kids are college aged & even liked the quietness of the area. My son & husband took their kayaks & enjoyed fishing. Caught lots of shrimp. My parents loved rocking on the big back porch over looking the marsh & reading. The house is fully furnished with everything we needed. The owners were fantastic to work with & we hope we can come back again in the future!

Tears of Joy!!!
When we walked in, we almost started crying because it was so beautiful!!! Happy tears!! The porch was magic! My family loved our stay so much, we can’t wait to book for next year!! There were some issues with the fridge stopping. We just unplugged it and plugged it back in and it was fine. The morning we checked out the dishwasher stopped working. Also, It wasn’t wheelchair accessible. My mom is 86, and the stairs got to her after awhile. But, it was a wonderful vacation!!! Thanks you!!

They went the extra mile for the pandemic
We could watch the herrings and birds in the march from the porch. Listen to the surf on the other side. The beach was empty until it got closed then we couldn't tell.
They use alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners everywhere they usually clean, and to be especially sure to clean these:
all doorknobs
all faucets
all light switches
all counters and table tops
all drawer pulls
all remote controls
They also use hydrogen peroxide spray on the mattress covers--a medical grade, 20%, to be sure it's effective
