Description and History:
178 Saint Philip Street, Unit C – The Alexander Wilson
The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by Dr. Samuel Wilson in 1819. The property was part of the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. One month after purchasing the property he deeded it to his son Alexander B Wilson. Wilson, listed as a planter, built this house in 1820 and occupied the property until his death on November 20, 1840.
Designed in the distinctive “Charleston Single House” style, this home boasts a variety of unique and charming architectural characteristics that have contributed to its widespread popularity. The structure is one room wide and extends several rooms deep, with the narrow side facing the street. Full length piazzas provide ample outdoor living space and shade to keep the house cool. The home is characterized by tall ceilings and large, symmetrically arranged windows on the facades. It also features steep gabled standing seam roofs and entrance door on the piazza side. This is a particularly lovely Charleston house.
This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated “dependency” or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, standing seam copper roof, copper guttering, original moldings, plasterwork, old glass windows, and solid panel doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. It's the real deal!
Saint Philip Square:
Saint Philip Square is an award-Winning collection of historic buildings meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston, and this property is one of seventeen unique rentals.
The grounds feature five special outdoor garden areas with amenities such as fountains,
dining areas, fire pits, and covered barbecues. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.
Your unit at Saint Philip Square includes a piazza-style private porch overlooking gorgeous, landscaped gardens. With comfortable seating, it’s ideal for a morning cup of coffee or a restful break between city adventures and socializing with good friends.
Study the area map and you will see our property shares a common border with Charleston’s famous King Street, renowned for shopping, dining, and nightlife. You are as close as it gets to King Street. With a large, landscaped lot you can rest assured your vehicle is nearby.
Neighborhood:
Saint Philip Square is situated adjacent to Charleston’s renowned King Street along the southern boundary of Cannonborough. Our property provides unrivaled access to King Street’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Within a two-block radius, you'll find over thirty restaurants offering international cuisines including French, Spanish, Italian, American, Mexican, Japanese, and Greek. This impressive selection doesn't even count the gourmet sandwich shops, coffee bars, pizza spots, oyster bars, wine bars, bakeries, ice creameries, or vibrant entertainment and music venues.
Charleston, like Rome, is unique in its rich historical and cultural offerings, and both are extremely walkable cities. All within a leisurely stroll, you'll discover the historic Charleston Battery, Broad and East Bay Street, Waterfront Park, the Four Corners of Law, historic churches and private homes, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Charleston Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Charleston Children's Museum, the Charleston Visitors Bureau, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). All these locations are easily accessible in a thirty-minute walk--no to need move your car from our parking lot.
Don’t feel like walking? Take an Uber or Lyft or try a Pedicab or rickshaw. The Charleston Black Cab Limo is excellent for larger groups, and you travel in luxury. In addition, the city provides free shuttle bus services utilizing its attractive DASH trolleys.
Want to explore further? We are two minutes by automobile to the main cross-town artery which easily connects to major highways making the Airport, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, Mt. Pleasant, and Ashley River Plantations (Drayton Hall, Middelton Place, and Magnolia Gardens) readily assessable.

This place was perfect for our group of 7 girlfriends in town for the Charleston Wine and Food Festival. Walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the visitor's center where we caught our shuttle out to the Village. We enjoyed the courtyard and fire pits after a long day. I highly recommend to those looking for comfort, convenience and have the physical ability to climb stairs.

We had a great weekend and the house was very clean. The location was walking distance to everything we wanted. Parking is a challenge if you have more than one car but there is a garage nearby. Definitely would stay again!
4.0
Great location, just a block off of King St. Loads of local spots for coffee, happy hour or lunch/dinner. Walk to most areas easily. The accommodations are a bit small for 5 adults as the 4th bedroom is actually the living room. Plenty of outside seating. Washer/dryer and grill are shared with several other units. Would still book again.

Pleasantly surprised at the staples provided by the host. We brought many of the supplies that were already provided. The round stairs were are bit scary and hard to get suitcases up but we managed
Thank you

We had a great trip. The unit is beautiful, super clean, in a great location and perfect for our group of 6. The beds were super comfortable too. And the 4 bathrooms worked well fir our group. Overall it was fantastic!
5.0
We had plenty of space to sit around and chat which was our #1 goal. Kitchen was fabulous. Beds were a hit with great mattresses and sheets.
A couple of things to note... 1. Light in bathroom in the murphy bed room doesn't work. pretty dark. 2. No lights on the front of the unit to mark our place so was very difficult to find it. Plus the "1" is missing in 178. 3. The sink in that same bathroom (as mentioned above) the water did not get hot. 4. The bathroom with the sink in the window upstairs needs a light. Hard to put on makeup.
These are not deal breakers by any means but just thought you should know. We will still recommend this place to our friends and family.

There were seven of us and we all wanted to have our own beds to sleep in. There was plenty of rooms, beds, and bathrooms so we were able to hangout yet have our own spaces to get ready. It is a really cute place with a great porch to hang out in. it’s right on the heart of things so we often just walked to restaurants and shopping. it was totally safe and we were never nervous about walking back late at night. The contact person was extremely responsive and even accommodated us checking in early age checking out later! Great stay!

Pretty smooth process renting this property. The unit was nicely decorated and very clean. The pictures do it justice. Just be aware that there is one bedroom on the first floor and a Murphy bed in the living room. Two other bedrooms are up a spiral stair case. The two upstairs rooms have twin beds. And the bathrooms are tight. Amenities were perfect too. Oh and the outdoor space or piazza was great as well. Definitely recommend!

We were 5 friends in a book club traveling together. The home was beautiful, very clean, with comfortable beds, and convenient to everything. Just one block off King Street, there are many restaurants and bars within a couple blocks. The historic area is only about 1 mile away-an easy walk or Lyft trip. There was some street noise, so bring ear plugs and/or make use of the 2 white noise machines. We enjoyed the piazza (porch) for coffee and tea in the mornings and loved Maya and The Grocery for dinner. I would definitely stay here again.

My five girlfriends and I were looking for a cute place to celebrate my 50th birthday. We wanted something nice and cozy, where we could all just hang out and chill. The house was so cute and exactly what we were looking for. The location was perfect! We walked to all the restaurants and shops and didn't feel at all unsafe. We had a few questions when we arrived and the property manager was quick to respond to our text messages and phone calls. The main living room had a sofa bed and a Murphy bed! The extra bathroom downstairs in the living room was gorgeous! Several of us girls enjoyed using that shower. It was beautiful. There is a small spiral staircase that leads to the upstairs bedrooms. It was a challenge getting our extra large suitcases up there but we managed to do so. Just wanted folks to be aware of that. The girls and I loved the house and will most likely stay here again when we come back. It was located is the perfect location.

Good times
The property was very clean. Beds were comfortable and pillows were great. The steps were not for the faint hearted and the angled ceiling upstairs a bit of a head challenge for the taller folks. Bathrooms were oddly proportioned. Generally a nice place to stay.

Amazing 3 day weekend in CHS!
I rented this to celebrate my Mom's 70th Birthday with my sister, mom and our spouses. The house was perfect for the occasion, it is very close to walk to all that CHS has to offer but is also ideal to enjoy some down time together on the patio during a rain shower or having coffee in the LR each morning. The house is very clean and mostly equipped for all of your cooking needs. I enjoyed the fact that each bedroom had a full bath, which allows everyone great privacy. The split AC units worked great and the beds were very comfy - great sleeping! Highly recommend, would stay here again!

Great long weekend away
Great home to stay in, located on the second and third floors of a typical Charleston home. Plenty of bathrooms for all who stay. Also the most comfortable beds of any home I've rented. One thing to note: although the home sleeps 8, there is only one parking pass, but there is a hotel around the corner for easy protected parking.
