Staying at Kactus is a great experience for those wanting a secluded getaway, with additional activities. I would highly recommend the plankton tour and jungle trek (thank you Rodolphe and Maïté!), which were amazing for learning about the island wildlife and ecosystem, and of course having a magical swim in the glowing sea.
Unfortunately as others have mentioned, there are quite a few negative points:
1. Prices. There is definitely a discrepancy between the prices of the activities, food, and services offered, and the quality of what you get.
- The food seemed reasonably priced on paper, but the actual quality of the food doesn’t match the price point, being quite dull and lacking any flavour (other than salt - the food was very salty!).
- Likewise, the price of the activities doesn’t align with the outcome of what you paid for. While the jungle trek we did was great, the ‘lunch included’ ended up being a tomato and cheese sandwich, which didn’t seem to justify the price given many other similar tours I’ve been on which can offer far more.
- the price of the boat transfer is clearly taking advantage of the fact it is the only option to get to the island, especially when it is rarely on time and very disorganised (again, price does not equal quality of service). The justifications given of the costs of gasoline, boat trip to the mainland, etc, seem very disproportionate to the amount you pay. Eg, we paid $30 USD for a 20 minute trip back to the mainland on a tiny boat (3 ppl). It would be fine to pay this if the money was actually going to the boat worker, however it’s doubtful it would be, making us question why it’s such a high price.
Given that a large majority of the staff members are there on a volunteer basis as backpackers, the ethics of where all the profit is going becomes questionable.
2. Smoking - there is so much smoking which is very unpleasant if you don’t smoke. It is one of the main ironies of Kactus that such an apparently health-focused, holistic, and eco friendly place should encourage copious amounts of smoking (selling cigarettes cheaply, most staff members smoking). At the very least there should be no smoking in the dining/food area.

Nicely located on a lonely island. Pretty relaxed vibes with simple huts. We enjoyed our stay and the nice beach. The food was ver nice.
There was a lack of comfortable hammocks. We somehow expected a lot of hammocks but we just found one stable one which was often used.

Relaxing and Great staff.
Bats poo in the bed and giant spiders in the Bungalow. But that is what you get if you want to stay on this remoted Island.

Amazing food and drinks. I've not had better food in Cambodia. Very kind staff. They offer tours such as a night time boat trip to see the glowing plankton (very much recommended, it was a-ma-zing), you can find board games and books others have left in various languages. They offer a boat from the shore (Ream) to the island, and if you need to come/leave at another time that can be easily arranged. You can do yoga classes too, very nice.
The futon in the tent was very hard, too hard for us in our 30s to have a deep sleep. But on the other hand - nothing beats waking up with a direct view of the sea 🩵

Die Lage ist Top, der Besitzer und das Personal sind überaus freundlich und hilfsbereit. Das Essen sehr lecker.
Die Preise für Essen und Trinken sind gehoben. Wenn man das weiß kein Problem.

The beach fully met and almost exceeded our expectations. The sand is super soft, no stones, slightly sloping so that you can easily go into the water even when there are waves.
The whole location is really a place to dream and relax, far away from mass tourism with its hotels, loud bars and people who want to sell you something every 10 minutes.
Alex, the owner, has created a small oasis here that he is currently rebuilding.
Kactus relies on renewable energies, avoids plastic waste and even collects some of it on the beach.
Alex was almost always available for questions and assistance, always very friendly and tried to implement everything.
The food completely exceeded our expectations, so the love with which the dishes are prepared here (recommendation: special seafood dinner) is sensational.
Die Preise fuer Essen und Drinks sind allesamt super fair und auch hier sind die Cocktails nochmal hervorzuheben.
Quiet oasis with top food, simple accommodation, between the jungle and a top beach. It should be clear to everyone that you sometimes meet animals/insects in your environment that you don't need.
The cottages are getting a little old and really need a rebuild. The wet area with shower/toilet is in particular need of renovation.
There's also a bit of attention to detail missing here. If thing is broken or doesn't works in the right way this should be fixed from the staff without complaining/reminding

Amazing stay @Kaktus ! 5 days out of time, on a little paradise island. We chilled in the hammocks, swam in the ocean and even hiked in the jungle. The staff is really really nice, volunteers and managers, the food is incredible ! Both khmer and western food. It was hard to leave the place...
Nothing ! Well, some mosquitos, but it was rainy season, and they provided us some repulsive !

Beautiful island and feels super remote! Loads to do and all the staff / volunteers were amazing.

Truly felt like a remote island, very special! Swimming with the plankton was amazing
Nothing really!! Do keep in mind that it’s very basic, so if you’re used to luxury hotels and airconditioning and comfy beds this might not be right for you.

Loved the location on this beautiful island, very good food and cheap prices. Staff are super nice and helpful and the hostel is right in between the beach and the jungle so that was amazing
Wifi is not super reliable but understandable since the location is so remote.

The most amazing hostel I’ve ever stayed in, and a fantastic experience to have. The staff are so warm and welcoming and the island is a beautiful paradise

This place is awesome, what a find! Staff are brilliant, Khasha, Kim, Victor, Pedro, Ronnie, chef, all the rest of the staff and all the dogs. Such a chilled place, we extended our stay like everyone else. Went for 2 nights stayed for 4. Great food, service by everyone. Great beaches, hilkes, nice island to roam around. Loads of great seating areas, nice bungalow, open air. Carry lots of cash as you will no doubt extend and need to pay extra. No card facilities.
No hot water, some rats, not that I saw one, but droppings. You purchase everything from Kactus, one way in and out from the island, arranged by Kactus. None of the above was a problem for me just thought I would mention it. Apart from the rats.

Great sights, quiet and relaxing, the only clean beach on the island at the time we were there
Bungalow was insanely hot at night
Sanitaries not very clean, a few garbage within the site
Bungalow and food are expensive (while the dorm is really cheap !)

KACTUS is an amazing place in the Jungle with a little Hippie Vibe, the stuff was lovely and the food delicious.
I liked everything but be prepared it’s in the Jungle so bugs and mosquitoes are around:)

Beautiful island vibes, Maia and Sophie are amazing. Definitely would like to come back with some friends next time. Stayed in jungle banana and the room was very nice, I love the open concept of the bungalows. There is a cute little swing if you walk down the beach and they do a lot of group activities. The food and drinks are very good also.
The only thing I didn't like was the process for the bill. I had put a credit on my account but when I asked my balance at the bar I was told that the credit amount was my balance due, which was way higher than what I actually spent so I didn't end up spending anything on my last night. Just make sure to keep track of your spending on your own if you want to know your balance.
Water is a bit rough.

It’s an absolute paradise, the location is great, the huts are really comfortable, the common area is nicely made and the leisure offers (yoga, tao, handicrafting, some trips etc.) are great. The beach and nature just force you to relax and the food is really tasty and worth the money.
Unlimited water refill is $1 per day - not a lot at all, but very unnecessary, especially because you don’t have a choice.
Everyone working here is really kind and tries to be helpful, but it is very uncoordinated and chaotic. If you have something urgent to be organized or taken care of, invest in frequent checks/ reminders!!

Amazing chilled out vibes at this eco-conscious resort. The beach is amazing and right on your doorstep. Beds were comfortable and facilities were great and clean. Food was amazing just a little pricey but I guess this is expected of a small island. Loved the workout studio and crafts area. Plenty of hammocks under the trees to lie and read/take in the incredible surroundings.
Just a lack of cheap meal options so was a little over our backpackers budget- but a nice luxurious treat.

amazing island!!!! the perfect island vibe, the food is reasonably priced and really good(try the sandwich, trust me😉) beds get cleaned every day. it is all very simple and not luxurious, but you don’t need that on the island anyway. btw you wake up right next to the beach by the sound of the waves☺️
nothing, it is perfect

This little paradise offers a long beach, beautiful sunsets, excellent food (pricy but for the quality I don’t mind), and really nice and friendly staff.
A good hangout area with hammocks, mattresses and pillows that need a wash because they are smelly.

Everything.
Thank you!! Tee you’re a super manager!
More dormitories, more food offers and maybe cheaper snacks

We had high expectations of this place after hearing about it from friends. The island is beautiful and the vibe at the hostel is very good. The food is delicious, you definitely need to try the glass noodle salad with prawns and the pizzas! Everybody is very chilled and the ecstatic dance with full moon was an amazing experience!
The beds were terrible, the mattress did not stop the feeling of the bamboo underneath. Our beds weren't made when we arrived and one bed was double booked so in the middle of the night a guy woke one of us up to ask why I was in his bed (even after we already let reception know that we had the feeling this was going on as there kept being belongings on the bed). There was no water so no shower for a couple days (which isn't too bad but still would've been nice to have the option). They offer snorkeling tours but when we wanted to book we got told the boats were busy so we couldn't go snorkeling which was a shame as that was one of the things we came for to the island.

The place is beautiful, there’s plenty of space to chill and relax. The resort is close to beautiful beaches. Kactus has an amazing cuisine. Furthermore, they offer free yoga and meditation classes and several workshops.
We stayed in a bungalow. It was quiet basic but suits our needs
The mattress could be replaced by a new one

Kactus is located on a quite wild island with only one other establishment on it (on the other side) so you really feel that you have the whole island to yourself. The nature around is amazing and they offer some nice tours or unguided walks. We kayaked through the swamp and it was very cool! The housing itself is definitely on a wild side but this is what we were looking for. Nonetheless, everything is very clean and comfortable. The staff are mostly volunteers and everyone is super nice! And the food is fantastic😍
