The drive in is captivating - an unsealed winding road through a valley, definitely off the beaten track. The road up to the property is steep but the reward is spectacular views. Candy was thorough in explaining the house and our every need was catered for, including milk, bread, their own honey & pantry staples should we have needed to cook our own dinner. Candy shared knowledge of Māori & related to the sky & landscape. We snuck out and saw the glow worms & sitting on the verandah as the sun went down listening to the wildlife is an experience we won’t forget!
We were sorry to leave and our only regret was that we were only there for one night!

It was in a spectacular location with beautiful view - all by itself . Very spacious and comfortable . Amazing sunrise views and those of the full moon . Need to come back when it is Matariki .

Candi and Rawiti were there to welcome us on our arrival and were on hand if needed. We were given a flying lesson on the house and its facilities, and introduced to the glow worm dell up the hill. Our visit was in the Autumn, so the large gas fire in the living room was very welcome in the evenings. The kitchen was well equipped, and the fridge and larder were stocked with goodies and ingredients to cook with. It was good to eat porridge and drink coffee whilst watching the sun rise over the hill from the veranda. Were the kauri forests and beaches not beckoning, we'd have sat there all day just watching the sun and rain on the woodland below the house. At night, I took a chair out back to watch the Milky Way (good dark sky!) and listen to the moreporks and the kiwis calling. Being away from any main road the surroundings are very quiet. It's a place I'd love to go back to.

Location beautiful, remote but easy to get to. Owner clearly very proud of self-built home. very generous supply of breakfast food and snacks. Clean and well-equipped.
Too much explanation at the start yet omitted to explain about possibility of gas running out for heating, So first evening a little chilly!

Nice property, built by owners in a spectacular location. nice beds and well outfitted
Property was good value and worthwhile. shower pressure was quite low

Absolutely stunning location, awesome views all around thanks to huge windows in every direction plus a 270° wrap-aroung-porch. This "humble abode" is luxuriously spacious and the whole place got very good vibes. The infos prepared by Candace, our hostess included not only things to do and the weather but also tide-times, stars visible during our stay and sunrise / sunset. I would definitely stay there again, but would try to stay longer, which I recommend to everyone. Three days is the minimum... The pantry and fridge were so well stocked that we didn't need to go grocery shopping. Did I mention the washing machine (lots of washing powder provided too) and the dryer?
Nothing to whine about

awesome location and superb backdrop. our hosts were passionate about their place and we appreciated the detailed introduction
single beds were very small and appeared to be for children not adults

This is an exceptional property - its location; the peacefulness; the night sky; the cicadas on the verandah supports in the morning sun. Inside it's well equipped and comfortable and our hosts were exceptionally warm and welcoming and willing to share their knowledge of the area and its culture without being intrusive.
Nothing. It is a little nitpicking to mention the low pressure in the main bedroom en-suite shower. We had read about this in earlier reviews and our host mentioned it when showing us around. So take is as part of a characterful, unique property that excels in so many other respects.

The owners are wonderful. Candace showed us around the home and provided a ton of information on the area. We used her travel guide for the area to visit nearby sites. Had we known there was so much to do in the area we would have booked for a much longer time. We absolutely loved the property. The glow worms were so cool to see, the gardens are beautiful and everyone we met were lovely. If we ever make it back to New Zealand we’ll be coming back here. We loved it!

The place was AMAZING! It's the perfect getaway place away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Candy was also very accommodating and lovely, taking time in orienting us with the place and things to do. The place was complete with everything that we needed. Will definitely go back here next time.
Not really a biggie but the single beds were too soft (I'm a firm mattress type of person). Other than this, it's a place I would go back to or recommend to friends and family.

Our hosts were welcoming and had a lot of information of the surrounding area on hand. They even picked some veggies out of their garden with which we made a salad. The lodge is in fine shape, very clean, large and with stunning views. While there, we had a big, windy rain storm, which knocked out the power to the entire area. Our hosts immediately responded with a generator and enough power cords to keep our electronics running and with the ability to run the gas heater. Given many rainy days, we really appreciated having access to a washer AND dryer. Thank you!!
The booking.com website states that the breakfast is "exceptional". What is provided is basically a continental breakfast with bread, juice, fruit and condiments provided. There was a lot of canned food in the pantry, but we generally do not have soup or canned pasta for breakfast. We were glad that we had brought our own yogurt, granola, eggs, etc., with us.

Great location, Candy and Dave made us most welcome, great hosts. It had more than we expected, best place we have stayed in, very good value for money, and that includes many motels, holiday homes etc in Australia, NZ and Fiji etc. PS you don't need a key, its that safe.
Nothing, even the rain was nice.

Spacious, nice kitchen to cook our meal, secluded with a fabulous bush outlook.

We really love this place within the surrounding tranquility. It is such an amazing location with sublime views of the gorge. The hosts are so friendly and accommodating, with tasty veges from their garden. Would highly recommend!

The location was great.
The hosts were very welcoming and friendly.
The weather wasn't the best.
This did interfere with the internet and TV
4.7
Breakfast OK. Location a bit remote, but beautiful

Wonderful hosts, beautiful property, family friendly, fresh air, room to explore. The fact that it was winter and we were warm and cozy, with plenty to do both in and outside of the house was amazing.
4.7
The pantry was full of cereals and well stocked with a lot of other stuff like peanut butter etc. Lots of fruit, two litre milk and juice. fresh bread, butter and strawberry jam awaited us.
There was not much not to like, just the pillows could have been a bit firmer but then were loads to use.

the location
Breakfast could be a bit more substantial

Awesome holiday in an awesome location with awesome hosts.
