The way to the accommodation was rather interesting. Nice and secluded house. You share a big house with 3 other rooms. The kitchen is fully decked out. Owner baked bread for everyone in the morning. You will have everything you need to make a meal, alternatively, there are a lot of restaurants around the area you can try. Needless to say, plenty of things to do/see.
Nothing.

Hard to find. Lot of similar black roads and no signs.

Everything was perfect, big kitchen with a big common area. Only four rooms with private bathrooms so it was really peaceful. We had breakfast with a really nice couple what made the stay even better.

Apart from the road to reach it, everything. The attention to detail is great, the kitchen has everything you might need, and the host is very helpful and nice
It's an isolated place so have to go through a dirt road, but well worth it!

We had a great stay in Birkilauf. Our room was very spacious and had its own bathroom as well as an private entrace to the huge terrace.
The common area has a living / dining room and probably the best kitchen we have seen in a guesthouse so far. You can probably cook (or bake) everything here - also the equipment was quite modern. You will also find eggs, milk, joghurt, cheese, butter, jam, cereals ... as well as tea and coffee to create your own breakfast. The terrace also offers a bbq.
Our host was extremly friendly and gave us a warm welcome. Also he made home-made bread and cakes for everybody to share.
The location is a little bit (but easy to reach and find) and we had the chance to see the northern lights from the terrace.

Johann and his mother are the perfect hosts, ensuring we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. This included everything we could have wanted to cook a hearty breakfast, usage of the laundry (which was much needed after a week of hiking), and a beautiful living room with views to relax in.
Johann met us at the farm resort where he made us a dinner reservation and gave us excellent recommendations on nearby activities and food. He also shared his home baked bread which we rate a 10/10 coming from voracious bread consumers! Birkauf is a gem and we will be back!

Great location and great welcome by the owner. Fully equipped kitchen and a lot of ingredients (coffee, tea, milk, eggs, oil, etc) made available by the owner to cook meals and breakfast, he welcomed us even with home-made bread. Highly recommend.

Johann was very accommodating and friendly. Each day he had baked fresh bread and cakes for those staying to enjoy. Birkilauf contains all of the amenities that one could ever need including fridge and freezer space, washing and drying facilities, and much more.

Johann, the host, is so helpful. We changed the dates and number of rooms after booking, he reacted to our request very promptly and made flexible arrangements for us. We felt he is a real host and he is very proud of the house and take good care of it. He is the only host we met in person in the entire around Iceland trip, greeted us on arrival and saw us off upon departure.
The facility in the guesthouse is excellent, kitchen in particular. We only stayed one night so didn’t get chance to use all facilities such as BBQ, etc. The room and bed are excellent, spotless clean and very comfortable. The host also provided homemade bread, cake, milk, jam, cheese, etc for gusts to make their own breakfast.
We would highly recommend this guest house and look forward to staying there again one day in winter to explore the north of Iceland.

Everything :) This was one of the best guest houses we've been too. Comfortable and clean room and shower. What makes this place stand out is a big shared living room and kitchen as well as washing machine. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need (it's better than the one I have at home!). There is no official breakfast included, but the owner keeps the refrigerator stocked with the basics (eggs, milk, cheese, etc), and also prepares tasty home made bread and cake :). For coffee lovers, there is a professional coffee machine.
The host is very friendly, and has great recommendations for things to do in the area or in Iceland in general. We stayed for 2 nights, but wished we had stayed for longer.

We were greeted by our friendly host and shown the property. Johann also showed us a lot of options for things to see and do in the area as well as some very nice restaurant recommendations. The guesthouse is a lovely home set in the trees. It has a very large living room and a gourmet kitchen with everything you could ever need to cook as well as washer/dryer. In the kitchen there were plenty of supplies to make your own breakfast. There were all kinds of coffee/tea, eggs, different kinds of milks, skyr, and cereals. Due to a late cancellation we had this large lovely home to ourselves. All of the sites in the Myvatn area were within easy reach of the guesthouse. Our host, a former pastry chef even made us some delicious homemade bread and lemon bread. We felt so spoiled! This guesthouse would be a great option for families needing more than one room.

Due to an issue at another hotel we had to book a room here last minute. The owner was super nice and accommodating, baked bread & cake in the morning for his guests, and chatted with us for an hour or so about Iceland and current events while we ate! Would more than recommend this property for your next stay in Iceland. Wonderful location to the nearby sightseeing as well!

Birkilauf combines the best aspects of staying in an apartment, a hotel and someone's house all in one. Its recently built with 4 really nice private rooms all with en suite bathrooms with fabulous showers but the kitchen, lounge, deck and dining areas are shared with other guests. The host is a former chef and this shows in the quality of the kitchen. Ingredients for breakfast are provided - eggs, milk, juice, butter, freshly home-baked bread and coffee from a proper espresso machine.
Views from the deck take in the local volcanic features around lake Myvatn. Johann, the host is very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and Iceland in general.
Nothing - I cannot see how it could be improved !
