There's woodwork throughout, a stone front gas log fireplace, a cozy living/kitchen/dining space plus a sunroom with a wall of windows looking out into the woods. Enjoy the sun-soaked deck during the day and lounging around the fireplace at night! And while it feels secluded, the cabin is on Sugar Mountain, so it is very convenient to all activities, attractions and events.

Pros: Great location, the house was very clean. It was quite. Pet gates everywhere were very helpful and a small fenced area was great.
Cons: As having no AC we found it was hot and stuffy upon arrival with some intence smell downstairs. The temos outside were comfortable so we thought it would not be an issue. We tried to open all the windows to get some air but it took few hours before it cooled down to some cofort level. The sunroom with the dining tavle has no windows to open so it remained pretty hot during the day.
The main features that we were attracted were decks on the main and lower level. The main deck was locked with no access to it. The lower deck was dirty and full of debris and looked liked it wasn't cleaned up in a while.
Frying pens had seen better days, and turned out to be unusable. It us a very small upgrade I would recommend to do so your tenants do not get frustrated.
And the worse part: we contacted Vacasa immediately upon arrival by phone and the texts as Vacasa team were asking us how was everything upon our checking in. Thinking that those issue were easy fixes and if we address it in a timely manner everyone could be happy. We voiced all our concerns and were assured over the phone and via texts someone will be contacting us, come in and resolve it on Saturday morning. Well... nothing happened, no word, phone call, no follow up. It was the most disappointing part

Good location, quaint cabin for getaway. Excellent sun porch, large deck in back. Needs some minor repairs (kitchen faucet needs replacing, master bedroom mattress needs replacing).
Overall a clean, well laid out cabin

The only problem we had was with the digital door locks and getting in the house.. The two key boxes on the right and one on the left was a little confusing. But house keeping came out and explained how to get into the house.
There is a faucet in the kitchen that is difficult to turn all the way off. It keeps leaking. Otherwise everything was great.

The good: location, house was clean
The very bad: This house has no A/C, which is really OK at this altitude, but this home also has a humidity problem in the basement - which means they need dehumidifiers. Apparently, before we arrived, there was a dehumidifier in the basement that overflowed and soaked the carpet at the base of the stairs - so much that the whole basement smelled musky and the smell came upstairs. With no AC, you couldn't be in the house overnight without opening the windows to both get a draft of cool air and get some of the musky smell out - so using the dehumidifiers with windows open was not an option that made any sense. It boggles my mind that the local Vacasa staff thought this home was OK to rent - this was our first and last time using vacasa for a vacation rental. To be fair, the vacasa staff did come out and look at it when we called, but there was really nothing they could do while we were there - this place should never have been rented in the state it was in.

The location and setting were beautiful. We spent most of our cabin time in a lovely sun room that overlooked the forest. Loved the gas fireplace. Laundry was a great convenience.
Did not like the beds (dip in middle of queen beds) , only 4 towels for family of four. Poor carpets (stains). Not an onsite trash can...we had to drive over a mile away to dispose of daily trash.

We loved this cabin. It has a great location if you want to visit nearby towns. It has a quiet neighborhood. The only thing is that they don’t have a big garbage can outside the cabin so you need to take the garbage to the main center which is about 3 miles away.

We spent several days here over Fall Break (mid-October). Clean and convenient property with two great viewing decks. Close to Boone, Linville Falls, Blue Ridge, etc. Overall, we had a great experience.

Perfect getaway place!
I must say I was truly intrigued with this home because it was so neat and clean. The scenery was breathtaking as well as serene. My family and I enjoyed all the amenities available but our favorite area was the enclosed deck overlooking the back yard. I certainly recommend this location to any small family who would like a private and peaceful getaway. This was our first time in the area and this home was the perfect distance from everywhere we wanted to visit.

The home is nice for a small family of 4. Very dusty, upstairs bath has no heat. Served it’s purpose for us lay our head down.

Nice cabin, needed some minor repairs
Cabin was nice. Some minor maintenance items needed attention. They were handled well by propert management company.

Disappointing, dirty, dusty, moldy, neglected
Disappointing to say the least. The house has obviously been neglected over the years and the owners have ignored years of feedback from other renters. For starters, there was cobwebs and dead bugs in every room, mold in the bathroom, dried and sticky coffee on the kitchen counter top, and animals in the walls and ceiling. But it was the dust and mold that left us feeling sick. Also, most of the lights didn’t work. Either the switches are broken or the bulbs were burned out. This left the house dark and us frustrated. It had the feel of an abandoned home. I know the owners say to contact the management company but we paid with the expectation that these details would and should be taken care of. Not our responsibility to point out your incompetence. No chance of a repeat stay here.

A lovely little cabin
Very well appointed, has everything you could possibly need.
For those of us of the older generation, the steps were a problem, also getting in and out of the deep tub.
WiFi connection badly in need of update.
We loved the sun porch and we enjoyed the comfortable furniture, including a very comfortable bed.
It would be helpful if the owner would write up a guide as to which of the two remotes to be used for the television. We ended up using one remote to turn the tv off and on and adjusting the volume, the other for channel selection. Was confusing, frustrating.
We had beautiful weather and we enjoyed touring the area and viewing the colorful leaves.
The evening of our arrival we notified Vrbo of a broken arm of bedroom ceiling light. It was repaired the next day.
Signs of mildew around the bathtub were a bit disconcerting.

Perfect Location
This location is a great base camp. It's about 20 minutes from Boone, Blowing Rock, Linville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The local restaurants are sufficient. Banner Elk is another nice community with nice shops and restaurants that is about 10 minutes from the cabin. Sky Valley Zip Tours is a fantastic adventure! I would like to spotlight the local VACASA staff. I walked outside to assist my wife with items in our vehicle and the door locked behind us. Inside were our phones, wallets and of course, the cabin door key. Fortunately there was a spare car key. It was about 8:30 AM. We drove to a local business that allowed us to use their phone to contact VACASA. The staff was extremely courteous and sent someone to open the cabin within 10 minutes or less of us arriving back at the cabin. They called later to make sure we had gained entry and to check on our well being. Fantastic customer support.

The home is quite, clean and easily accessible by car. It is stocked with basic kitchen, bath and laundry supplies. The kitchen had everything needed for any cooking options. TV's are located in each bedroom plus living rm. Restaurants and grocery stores are located close by. It is within driving distance to many beautiful hikes and great views along the Blue Ridge Pkwy, Grandfather Mountain and Roan Mt State Park.
The house can benefit from some minor TLC. Carpets had visible stain in all rooms and stairs. The screen to the upstairs bedroom window was broken and allowed bugs to enter. The sunroom chandelier had a lamp shade that had a burn hole. Although light switches were labeled, after 7 days we still didn't know what some switches did, regardless of switch direction. There are 22 steps down to the cabin so anyone with mobility issues may find this a challenge.
The cabin can get uncomfortably warm on hot days due to lack of A/C and cross ventilation. In our opinion, installing a screen door in the glass enclosed sunroom might improve air circulation. Would we stay there again, yes but not in the middle of summer.

Great Stay
Positives:We loved this cabin—it met all of our needs and is in a wonderful location. We were 10 minutes to grandfather mountain and 15 minutes to Boone! We loved having the options of the living room, sunroom and deck. The inside furniture was super comfy!
Slight Negatives: NO AC- although we did very much appreciate the fans located in the rooms, but we had to leave the doors open to get some air flow to feel sticky mid afternoon. And only other complaint was a musty smell in lower level bedroom (and towels were also left in washer and smelled extremely sour upon our arrival)

Nicely appointed and conveniently located. Close to amenities but quiet " in the woods" atmosphere. Saw mother doe and 2 fawns, wild turkey, groundhog during stay.

Could be a great place but...
The location and size of this house are both great. The view out the back of the property is very serene and we loved having our coffee in the crisp morning air on the sun deck. This place could be really wonderful, but...overall, the house was in ok condition and is well overdue for a deep cleaning and some TLC. The is the first rental that we've ever stayed in that didn't feel truly clean (and we've stayed in many over the last 10 years). From the stained white carpet, bugs in the corners of the rooms and window sills, black mold surrounding the master bath/shower, to the cigarette butts and random items stored on the un-kept lower deck, it just didn't feel clean. The pillows all need to be replaced (yuck) and the lack of bath mats beyond the single motel-grade towel on the floor in the bathrooms made this property less than pleasant. There were a few cold nights, but we weren't confident in the cleanliness of the blankets in the closet to dare use them. There was no dumpster on site for the household trash, as other reviewers have mentioned (we looked everywhere and ended up taking our trash to town). We were there for a total of 7 nights, and luckily, there were only 2 of us staying because the overall lack of bathroom towels, decent bed pillows, and extra trash bags would be a real problem for a larger family. The electricity went off multiple times for many hours in the evening/middle of the night while we were there - I'm not sure of the cause, but since this happened in August, I would hate to think of no power on the colder winter nights. We are pretty easy going, so we made due and enjoyed our stay in the mountain air surrounded by the forests, but this is not a luxurious property and the lack of overall cleanliness and care of the property was very apparent. We will definitely consider staying at a different property for our future trips to the area.

Home Away
My family and I have stayed at this home a total of three times. It is an excellent place to stay. The only negative is there is a slight problem with the downstairs bathroom, being sluggish to flush. Otherwise, we had an excellent time and will hopefully return.

Here is my 100% honest review of our stay at shelter rock:To start with the negatives. Upon arrival as soon as we walked through the home we found spots with sticky liquid on the floor, which makes you wonder how much cleaning is actually being done especially during a pandemic. The upstairs shower has a mold issue and it was unsettling to look at while you shower. The downstairs toilet didn’t flush regularly either. Some things could definitely be updated. Those are my only complaints, now for the positive:This home is in a great location! It’s very close to banner elk and beech mountain is only 18 minutes so you have the opportunity to explore both areas. We visited from Florida and the night we arrived it was snowing! The weather is very nice at the higher elevation. The home had everything you could need in the kitchen so we prepared a lot of meals there which is awesome to save some money and driving time. The heaters worked great, the beds were comfortable. The whole home was cozy. I saw review about lighting and we had no issues with any of that. It felt very secular despite but we could easily run down the road to pick up stuff from food lion or visit a local restaurant. The check in process was easy, the wifi worked great, tons of TV channels. Some good workout equipment too! I also want to mention there is a record player and CD player so if you have records bring them! Not sure if there were any on site we didn’t see them. I really felt like this was a home away from home! We spent every morning on the sun room and it saw some deer too. The downstairs deck was perfect for some quick snow ball fights. Overall this was a great stay with a good value. Of course there were a few little things like I had mentioned but they are easy fixes and I wouldn’t let them deter me from staying again. We really loved our time here and are Hoping to come back some day!

Good for a couple or small family
This house has nice, well-equipped kitchen and a lovely sunroom. It was a good size for two people. We spent some time on the small upper deck, but didn’t use the lower deck at all. As other reviewers have noted, the lower level was very damp when we arrived. However, the de-humidifier is very effective it was quite comfortable after about 24 hours. There were a few dead bugs around, but it is a cabin in the woods, after all. This house served as good base for numerous hikes in the area.

Poor property management company.
Nice home. Wonderful setting. No information on how to contact property manager other than email which took 1-2 days for response. No emergency contact information - what if a water piper ruptured? No trashcan outside - the surrounding properties had outdoor trashcans. Had not been cleaned properly. Considering Covid-19, this place needs a deep cleaning. Glad we brought disinfectant wipes. Dirty floors underneath furniture. Don't look underneath the cushions on the couch - food. Cobwebs. Dirty dishes - dried coffee in cups. Shame on Vacasa & on VRBO for allowing them to be associated with you. Been renting from VRBO since 1994 - 1st bad experience. This is the 5th property I've rent through VRBO over the last 5 years. Want my cleaning fee back - seriously. I expect a response from you about this property manager & the lack of cleanliness at this property. Vacasa did not treat us like they would want to be treated.
