We booked to stay in the train carriage which is quirky and has a lot of character. It is also cosy. However it does require some TLC and if you stay there it would be nice to have housekeeping as you do for the main house. After 2 nights we had a maintenance issue and spent our third night in the Bishops quarters. Ok but no character compared to the carriage. Bed very comfy though.
Good location for walking into town and the company we used for the Milford Sound trip - MitrePeak- picked us up from the end of the drive.

The engaging welcome, delightfully unconventional decors, fireplace and complementary red wine in the library, and nice breakfast in the chapel.

fascinating history, central location, great outdoor space, lovely rooms, extremely clean and well cared for

Only stayed one night, wish it could have been longer, may well return.

Great breakfast, wonderful and informative host (Kyn) and staff, quiet and clean. Nice library area with fireplace.
Everything was great!

I enjoyed my stay at Te Anau Lodge, the staff were nice and very friendly the place was very clean+++++ the bed comfortable
The choice of food available at breakfast time was amazing and it was nice sharing a table with other travellers and chatting
It was particularly special to me as I stayed in the Music Room where I was taught Music in the 1960’s when the building was located in Nightcaps
Nostalgia and special memories
Thank you

Comfortably elegant. Good breakfast. Wonderful host.
Nothing.

I was in a detached building called ‘Bishops Lodge’ so it was very quiet and I didn’t have to worry about being quiet either. The breakfast was good.
There was no welcoming milk carton in the fridge (probably just simple oversight) They had gone ‘over the top’ with the ‘Bishop’ thing with dark furniture and even a cassock hung up on hooks with too few hooks to hang my stuff on.

An interesting building in a quiet surrounding. Friendly and helpful staff
We stayed twice and rooms were different. One was quite peculiar and might not suite all customers expectations so this should be informed in advance

Great place to stay very original and different in its style, staff were very helpful and sorted us out a place to eat, (Fat Duck, very good)
Great full breakfast lots of choice
Would stay again if returning to NZ
All good

Beautiful historic building and had a proper lodge feeling to it
The music room had some noise coming through walls in the night - possibly plumbing

Te Anau lodge is well worth a visit even if it wouldn't have been a place to sleep. A very original touch of Tim Burton is in the air in this gem that must be preserved.
I wish I had tried every single special room. The carousel one seems the craziest (only for adaptable people).

unique stay in railway carriage

The lodge itself is an attraction. Wonderful garden, lots of things to see. The house has a lot of stories. The style is quite formal with even a library to use with snacks and drinks.
The house not very sound proof. Very few power socket.

Mark and Lyn were terrific hosts. couldn’t do enough for us. most grateful for all their efforts.

Adequate and friendly. Pleasant, quiet grounds (but a little way out from the main town area).
A very good full breakfast was supplied and the dining room was lovely. The shared social room was also great, however due to Covid we didn't make use of it. The manager was friendly and helpful.
Our quite small room didn't provide anywhere to sit comfortably or even a table to do anything at, like eat a takeaway... So we had to site on the bed most of the time.
The fridge was noisy.
The venue says that pets are welcome, however our small dog wasn't allowed anywhere inside the building. If I hadn't by good luck or accident booked the room which was located just outside the main building we would have been really caught out by this.

Owner of facility was exceptionaly friendly and helpful. Top guy!

Excellent hospitality, Mark really went the extra mile. Very enjoyable stay.

The lodge had a real old world charm about it that I have not experienced in any of my travels. Mark, our host, is charm personified and spared no effort to make us comfortable from the moment we entered his lodge.
So tastefully decorated, with each item and piece of furniture located with great thought. The old nunnery has really come alive under Mark.
I encourage folk to visit Te Anau and stay with Mark...you won't regret it.
Yes, I didn't like it....I LOVED IT!

Needs the help of the “Hotel Inspector”. Has potential but misses the boat in many ways.

The convent was just lovely, but we wanted to stay in the train car - it was amazing! So unique, so much fun, & the owner could not have been more interesting or more helpful. An exceptional experience! We could barely leave! The best place to stay in Te Anau by far!
Absolutely nothing!
