Beyond beautiful, my partner and I utterly adored having our own little private garden oasis and gorgeous abode to relax and immerse ourselves in a culture different from our own.
Truly a stunning place to stay.
Can't understate that.
Not related to the Ryokan but a tip for anyone reading this please try Okariba up the road for an authentic dining experience that will make your night.

This historic villa associated with the Yamashina is a truly amazing and unique place to stay in Kyoto. It combines modern amenities, centuries of tradition and the hospitality of its staff. The management was so kind to allow me to do a simple tea ceremony using utensils of the family and the garden and rooms were very beautiful. Calm, quiet and truly restorative, I highly recommend Genhouin!

It's very delicious.
I really like the food.
we will eat one more times when we will be on there.
This hotel very good.
So I thing there is no thing that I don't like.
I will stay here again if i will be in Japan.

The location is amazing and calm, with a beautiful Japanese garden. The inside of the ryokan is the perfect mix of tradition and modernity, with all the comfort expected from such a place.

We loved absolutely everything about Ryokan Genhouin. Exceptional atmosphere and attention to detail, wonderful gardens and the food was wonderful and absolutely beautifully presented. The ryokan presents its sense of history subtly without demanding attention to itself... in that way it's a fantastic counterpoint to the more tourist-driven aspects of Kyoto. We can't say enough good things about our stay.
There is nothing to dislike.

Beautiful tranquil place

The property was amazing. It's what I imagined a ryokan would look like in terms of a traditional japanese style building. From the moment you enter you enjoy the view from their tatami reception area as they serve you tea and a sweet while the check you in. The rooms were amazing, spacious, clean, and had that japanese tatami room feel. The view out of our room into the garden was beautiful and soothing. The staff were very helpful and accommodating to english speaking tourists. The japanese breakfast they served was awesome. The private reservable onsen was very nice. We also had a nice shower/bath in our room. The place was very quiet and I feel like I didn't see many people so I felt like I had the place to ourselves.
Wish they had a Kaiseki dinner, but that is a minor short coming as we found great places to eat in the area.

Very refined. A truly Japanese experience with an exclusive and very professional service. We have stayed in a room with a private Japanese garden. It was extremely beautiful.

- extremely gracious and helpful staff and personal attention. Epitome of traditional Japanese hospitality.
- wonderful welcome and check-in setting and experience.
- exceptionally clean and well maintained.
- very unusual facility (originally residence of a noble family) restored, maintained, and modernized faithfully to highest standard of Japanese traditional architecture design and style, while also sensitively and tastefully modernized.
- surrounded by beautiful traditional landscape garden.

Awesome experience, I recommend anyone going to Kyoto to experience the ryokan.
The location is a bit far from almost everywhere, We had to order a taxi most of the time. But still worth it.

Love the Japanese style house in a peaceful setting with beautiful garden and super kind, friendly and very helpful staffs. The onsen facility is also nice and super clean. The room set up is just perfectly done.
Just some little things need to be improved like there’s no breakfast available (it would be nice to have a lovely breakfast in such a beautiful place like that). The check-in and check-out time are a bit too late and too early than others(in at 4pm and out at 10.30am). And there’s no hot water at in-room wash basin. The rest is just perfect.
