About this cottage rental
This is my darling cottage set in the delightful village of Melbury Osmond known as "Little Hintock" in Thomas Hardy's book "The Woodlanders". It is perfectly placed to reach many of the wonderful things that Dorset has to offer - the Jurassic Coast, the charming villages of Cerne Abbas, Evershot and Cattistock and the quaint towns of Beaminster and Sherborne. There are many lovely walks around - an amble with the dog, The Hardy Way nearby or a walk through Melbury deer park to the Acorn Inn at Evershot.
This is a charming, characterful old cottage set in lovely countryside and it must be noted that it is in imperfect decorative order with old furnishings. On the first floor where there is a lovely double aspect main bedroom with rural views, a small bathroom with bath and hand held shower for hair washing and a single bedroom. Steep stairs rise to a twin bedroom with two single beds perfect for sharing. There is a large garden overlooking fields and a small sun room with its little table is wonderful to read a book in or kick your boots off after a long walk. We are happy to welcome dogs and there are some great walks from the cottage. SORRY, NO CHILDREN UNDER 5.
However, if this is the type of property you like, it's a great place for family holidays or weekends with friends, a Dorset institution in fact where many of my Dorset friends have had much jollity and fun with its coloured walls, cottage rooms with rural views in a wonderful rural setting and surrounded by wonderful things to see and do.
The cottage is located in one of the prettiest parts of Dorset bordering the 'Cattistock country' with its green undulating land which gets more dramatic as you weave your way to the coast 25 minutes away. It could be said that it is in the centre of the county and access to many of the iconic Dorset landmarks are within 1/2 hour's drive in any direction. The village features in one of the great writer, Thomas Hardy's books 'The Woodlanders' and in fact his mother was brought up in the village and her cottage still stands. It is one of the 'choice villages' in estate agents speak with its lovely period properties, handsome church and 'the Splash' - a small brook that crosses the village road and flanks the Melbury Estate with its parkland.
Dogs welcome but please leave £20 in the cottage for the cleaner. NB. GARDEN NOT ENCLOSED.

Very rustic but generally cosy (wood fire much appreciated). Great base for exploring the countryside.

Nice two night break with my daughters in this beautiful old quirky cottage. A few hiccups but these were sorted by Kate eventually. Very clean and well equipped.

A quiet getaway in rural Dorset
A quirky old house in a rural setting.

My family, including spaniel, had a lovely time in this quirky little cottage. Nice big garden, sun room, all mod cons and plenty of equipment in the kitchen, decent wifi and TV. It was spotless when we arrived and we appreciated the local information in the blue folder. There is no shower but the little bath fills up quickly and it suited us fine. About 10 mins drive from Yeovil, the cottage is near to local shops and also feels rural, with plenty of thatched-roof cottages nearby and some pretty walks. It's about 40mins from the coast.
Overall, this is a peaceful rural retreat, ideal to recharge the batteries, in an idyllic location. The rental process was straightforward. Highly recommended

Perfect cottage, quiet surroundings and near to the coast,
After reading Kates description, we expected a smaller cottage than it actually was. Cozy cottage in a wonderfully tranquil setting, nostalgic - good atmosphere :-) With many conveniences, for a wonderful stay!

We stayed for a week and we literally fell in love with the cottage! It is exactly as described: old fashion, rustic. It was just what we were looking for: peace and silence. The garden is big: the boys played a lot of table tennis, I did my yoga exercises, we made bbq... The atmosphere of the cottage is very familiar, welcoming, warm. I recommend a stay here to all those who want to escape from the city, to leave behind the noise, traffic and thoughts and immerse themselves for a few days in a bucolic atmosphere, in the charm of the countryside.
The cottage is an excellent starting point to visit the beauties of Dorset: with a few miles drive you can easily get anywhere. The kitchen is fully equipped. Nothing is missing and Kate, the owner, is kind and helpful. We had a wonderful time there!

Homely and compact
Fantastic place to stay in a fantastic location. Access to everywher is extremely easy, we travelled all over the county and never had any problems at all. Great walks, particularly through the deer park. The property is small but well maintained with a great character. We really enjoyed it.
