A classic shingle home named "HighTide" is a sailor's, hiker's and relaxer’s paradise overlooking the Fox Islands Thorofare and Carver Cove on the north side of Vinalhaven, Maine. “HighTide” is a dream vacation, year-round family home with six bedrooms and 4 ½ baths (can sleep up to fourteen subject to approval). There are spectacular seaside views from every window.
Situated on 19 acres, the gardens and grounds at HighTide include a fully fenced hard-surface tennis court (with basketball hoop), an open field for sports, double seat Adirondack chairs around a marshmallow fire pit, a hammock, hundreds of feet of wonderful stone beach, a large dock, and three large boat moorings offshore (up to forty tons) under a separate contract. . The nearby Polly’s Cove Vinalhaven Land Trust, the infamous “Starboard Rock” at Winter Harbor, and the "Fox Rocks" nature trails provide wonderful scenic walks/hikes.
At the house, the pergola covered south terrace next to the front door provides a sunshine morning coffee and lunch spot. Nearby is the BBQ grill and lobster steam cooker (both propane). The hillside Adirondack chairs look out past the flagpole to Carver Cove, which is very often an anchorage for visiting Penobscot Bay Schooners.
The east screen porch has a dining table for eight, four comfortable chairs at a stone fireplace, and provides wonderful, expansive views to the Camden Hills in the distance. The adjoining north deck with gangway ramp to the east and north lawns is the spot for evening sunset cocktails all season.
The primary bedroom suite encompasses the western end of the first floor and includes a four-post king bed looking out on the cove. The primary bathroom has a very large shower with twin shower heads, hand wands, and a porthole to the west porch. There are twins sinks, a private commode and a Jacuzzi tub. These rooms have direct access to the private west screen porch with swinging day bed and an outdoor shower. A stair leads to the north lawn.
The centerpiece of the home is a three-story interior stone chimney in the entrance hall, encircled by a nautical themed wood staircase and rails. The stone fireplace fronts in the large Great Room, which has a comfortable sofa and lounge chairs grouped at the fireplace and a two-person window seat bench looking out on the cove and Camden Hills. Bring your best piano player to enjoy the grand piano. Play backgammon, chess and bridge at the game table. The “Ship’s Bar” with wine fridge is in easy reach.
The large chef’s grade kitchen with all amenities (espresso machine, six burner gas stove and grill, two ovens, warming drawer, microwave, all small appliances, three sinks) provides ample room at the center island to prepare meals, picnic baskets and otherwise organize your days in Maine. The kitchen includes an open dining room for entertaining and it provides a rare “bad weather day” alternative to the screen porch for meals. The adjoining mud room includes a washer and dryer, a second dishwasher for those large meal clean-ups, an additional refrigerator and freezer for extra provisions, and a full-size ice machine. The exterior door leads to the BBQ Grill and Lobster steamer. Our housekeeper may assist with meal prep, shopping and cleaning.
The second-floor features three bedrooms and the study. At the west end, the bedroom suite has a queen bed, relaxed sitting area and a private bath with twin sinks and a shower tub. Down the east corridor are two bedrooms featuring “ships berth” window beds (each room sleeps two) and a twin sink bathroom with shower and bath (suitable for bathing children) with a private commode.
Behind the stone chimney at the center of the house, the “wheelhouse” study provides a partner’s desk and office workspace. The networked house HP printer is here. The "glass-floor", ships-ladder accessed, all windowed "cupola" at the very top of the house has 270 degrees of ocean view. With a director’s chair and fold out table, it’s a writer's getaway and enriching hide-out, but please obey the rule: never more then two people and no shoes in the cupola.
On the ground floor facing the sea, the west bedroom has French doors opening to an umbrella shaded terrace. The room has twin beds convertible to a king bed. The game room has a pool table / ping pong table combo, a movie theater style big screen projector for your devices, and a bookshelf stocked with summer reading. A high ceiling “bunk room” includes four ships berth bunks (two full, two twin) for your “crew”. These bedrooms share a stone floor bath with twin sinks, a large steamer shower and a private commode. At the east end, a large mirrored exercise room with fixed Cybex equipment and free weights, treadmill, and ballet bars has large French doors opening to the north lawn.
HighTide is served by Starlink internet. Stream your subscriptions from your devices onto the TV's at the Great Room and Game Room. Land line phones provided.
The dock includes four single kayaks, and a stand up paddle board (SUP) -- bring your life jackets please. Opti’s and lasers available for rent to experienced sailors only. Use of the boats requires a separate liability release.
The Town of Vinalhaven (and the State of Maine Ferry Terminal) is a 15-minute drive away on the south end of the island . Three restaurants, two sandwich shops and the candy & ice cream store await your visit. Penobscot Island Air provides air taxi service from the Owls Head airport in Rockland to the Vinalhaven runway. North Haven Island lies across the Fox Island Thorofare and has the fantastic Nebo Lodge (Restaurant & Bar), the Calderwood Hall Pizza restaurant, the North Haven Golf Course and the Casino (Yacht Club). Arrangements can be made for short term memberships at the Casino (great for kids sailing lessons) and the Golf Club.
The rental rate quoted for HighTide is for a party of six only. Additional guests are charged at fifty dollars ($50.00) per person per night. The owner's caretaker and/or housekeeper will visit the property daily. We use our own Occupancy License Agreement and require a damage deposit and rental pre-payment. Guests must also remit a nine percent (9%) State of Maine tax in addition to the rental payment. A house cleaning fee is also applied amount subject to occupancy during your stay.
