About this house rental
PROPERTY OVERVIEW:
House, 2 Bedrooms, 1.25 Baths, (Sleeps 4)
The Nene Nest, Kauai is a classic, sugar plantation- style cottage located on the always sunny West Side of Kauai. Just 152 steps from the ocean, it offers a true Hawaii feel.
Designed with a 'slow' pace in mind, our hope is that you enjoy every part of your stay; sipping coffee on the updated lanai in the mornings with a book in hand, or by relaxing on the beach surrounded by sunshine and ocean breezes on the beautiful garden isle of Kauai.
This charming authentic island cottage was featured in Tiny Homes Magazine and in the 'Love Shacks: Romantic cabin charmers, modern getaways and rustic retreats around the world' coffee table book and we can't wait for you to experience it!
THE SPACE:
Completely restored and remodeled, it features a new fully-equipped kitchen, new bath, two spacious bedrooms, comfortable living room, lanai, bedroom air conditioning and landscaped garden. Its nine and a half foot ceilings, giant airy windows, original crown moldings and wainscoting, original wood floors, and tropical ceiling fans in each room give you the feeling of 'paradise of old.'
THE AREA:
The home is in Kekaha, the sunniest area of Kauai boasting the longest white sand beach in the Hawaiian Islands. This is true Hawaii, away from the tourist-filled beaches and stores, where church services and grocery-store conversations are still heard in the Hawaiian language. Yet great restaurants, grocery, farmers market, shops, art galleries, and great Kauai outdoor activities are minutes away. Kekaha is at the doorway to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, famous for its hiking opportunities and vistas of the Napoli coastline.
THE PERFECT WEST SIDE LOW-KEY DAY:
Awake for coffee on the garden lanai.
Drive two minutes and take a morning walk on the longest white sand beach on Kauai.
Stop for lunch at the Lodge at Kokee before an invigorating hike in Waimea Canyon.
Wash off your hiking muscles in the outdoor hot shower.
Stroll two doors down to the ocean, cocktail in hand, to watch the island’s best sunset.
Prepare a light supper in the fully-equipped gourmet kitchen.
Then sleep peacefully in your pillow-top king and queen beds.

This is now our second time staying at the Nene nest and it was perfect. We were able to have the comforts of home while on a week long vacation. We love staying at the nene nest and its proximity to the true Aloha spirt.

What an incredible treasure the Nene Nest is!! I’ll be back every year!

The Nene Nest was perfect for our 30th anniversary. It truly is a home away from home and had everything we needed for a week’s stay. We would not change a thing. If you’re looking for a quiet, “locals only” vibe, this is the place for you. We will be back! Mahalo nui loa, Melissa & Kyle

This is a great house and we loved our stay. The beach was beautiful and everything was perfect.

I can’t say enough good things about the Nene Nest!
The property is adorable, well-maintained and full of thoughtfully designed touches; as is the surrounding private yard with beautiful flowers, banana trees and soft grass.
The house had spacious rooms, comfortable beds, a well-equipped kitchen, beach supplies and toys for our kids!
Melissa was a friendly and responsive host and you can tell she takes pride in sharing this special place with her guests- Thank you, Melissa!
Kauai was a perfect vacation spot for our family with two small children, and it was a real treat to get to come back from our daily adventures to a private, comfortable bungalow that felt like home. We can’t wait to go back!

Close to the beach, beautiful sunsets, and nice quiet cozy place with everything we needed for our family. Owner Melissa made sure we were okay when there was a large fire about 5 miles from us.

We stayed at the Nene Nest to explore the hikes of Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park. The location was great- close to the trails and Waimea Town itself in case we wanted to go out and eat or get groceries.
The house was comfortable and in a very quiet location. Steps to the beach for sunsets, short driving distance to swimmable beaches.
If you’re looking for a good home base to explore this area, I highly recommend the Nene Nest.

We loved our honeymoon at the Nene Nest!! This was our first time on the island and we loved it. However, Kekaha is a bit of a drive from various locations. But we found it to be perfect for our excursions and loved the quiet atmosphere. Just something to consider when booking! Mahalo Kyle & Melissa! 🌺😌

Nene Nest exceeded my greatest expectation! This home is divine. Perfectly designed for comfort and privacy and 1-2 mins walking time to the ocean. Spacious bedrooms, living room and kitchen. Super clean. I felt very safe. I plan to rent this home again. Owners are responsive to inquiries. This really is a beautiful home nestled in the perfect area.

If you want a Hawaiian experience with your accommodations the Nene Nest is perfect! It’s tucked away in a quiet and beautifully landscaped spot. It was very nice inside…kitchen had everything you’d want, spacious bedrooms with comfortable beds, great living area, all nicely decorated . While close enough to the ocean to hear the waves (just around the corner) you have to drive a few minutes to the Kekaha Beach Park (which has perfect golden sand) for beach activities. Very close for visiting Waimea Canyon. The west side of Kauai is not a touristy area but restaurants in Kekaha and Waimea are not far. We mostly grilled and ate on site anyway. It has AC in the bedrooms only. Normally you wouldn’t need them but we hit an unusually rainy May and they were great to keep the humidity in check. Loved it and will come back if in the area again.

We had a great time on Kauai and the house was awesome! It has everything you need including beach towels and gear! We had a small issue and the owner was amazing and had it fixed immediately! We loved the house, the beds are comfy and the AC in the bedroom is awesome to get a little break from the heat. We all slept like babies! The famous Kauai roosters visited us every day!! LOL!! This side of the island had some really high surf when we were there so we didn't get to use the beach by the house but Salt Pond Beach just down the road is protected and was nice. We also went to Poipu beach and that was also more protected. We enjoyed our time on Kauai and at the Nene's Nest and look forward to another trip in the future. We would for sure stay here again.

We absolutely loved our stay at this little gem. Set in a local neighbourhood and with so much love for detail, it felt a little bit as though we would actually live here. The cottage itself is just beautiful, the decor on point and the kitchen very well equipped. It was so nice to have a beautiful garden to hang out as well.

The property was in a quiet neighborhood, with a quick walk to the beach. Plenty of area restaurants and shopping nearby. The house had everything we needed, a very comfortable bed and best of all an outdoor shower. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner on the lanai in the peaceful and secluded setting. With luck we’ll return soon to enjoy it all over again.

My friends and I stayed at the Nene house for 7 days and we absolutely loved every bit of it! The house itself was very clean and cozy, we felt right at home and look forward to coming back to unwind from our day. The location couldn’t be any more perfect as it is across the street from the beach and we got to watch the sunset every evening, and it was located in a beautiful part of the island. The outdoor shower was very nice and great to rinse off after the beach. Our beds were very comfy to sleep in and enjoyed our mornings hearing the roosters freely walking around outside. You can tell the owners really thought of little details to make this home very special and a heartwarming place to stay. They are also very responsive and friendly. I would definitely return here to stay again and highly recommended anyone else to book this home!
Thank you for all your accommodations!
Cheers Xx

Absolutely as advertised, nice clean, close to a nice beach for wading and sun. Quiet residential neighborhood, tucked away off the street. House was welcoming, well stocked ( we added some
Tupperware). Very close to groceries and a few restaurants in Waimea. Easy access to the canyon and Polihale beach, quick to Salt Pond.
If you have been to Kauai before, the roosters can be impressive in the early hours. The hosts have done a few things trying to mitigate the noise. We tried to chase them off their roosts in the yard at dark; might have helped a bit, but obviously just sending the roosters to a neighbor. If you are a light sleeper, many places in Kauai can be challenging.

We had a wonder stay. Little piece of heaven. It was easy access to many beautiful beaches , quaint little towns and some fun spots in PoiPu. Wish we could stay longer!

We enjoyed our time at the Nene Nest. The location was perfect for us with spectacular hiking, beaches and boat ride up the Na Pali coast very convenient. The sunsets from the porch and close by beach were great.

We were so tempted to keep this gem all to ourselves and not write a review—such a perfect little hideaway it is! From the moment we stepped in, it felt like we'd stumbled upon our own slice of paradise. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, creating an ambiance that whispered relaxation and bliss. It's the kind of place you dream about returning to before you've even left, where memories linger long after the stay is over. Honestly, sharing this feels like revealing a well-kept secret, but exceptional experiences like this deserve to be celebrated.

Melissa and Kyle have created a beautiful cottage to relax and enjoy Kauai's beauty! The well equipped cottage is a two minute walk to the beach, a short drive to explore Waimea Canyon, and just about an hour to the other side of the island. Plenty to do and their recommendations on food was spot on!

The hosts have a charming home in a quiet neighborhood. They have lots of extras that made our stay comfortable. We could hear the ocean while sitting on the lanai.

A wonderful get away from the hustle and bustle of a city! Easy access to beach and Waimea Canyon.

My wife, son, and I really enjoyed staying in this rental. Everything was clean and the check in instructions were easy. Everything in the rental was in great working order. The AC in both bedrooms helped us for the first few nights as we acclimated to the 70 - 80 degree weather. 10/10!

Very comfortable accommodations just a couple hundred yards from the beach. Everything we needed was there.
Definitely will want to return.

It has been more than 10 years that we came back to Kauai. We were specifically looking for place away from the tourists spaces and any crowds. Nene nest was that spot. A very low key area in a local neighbourhood with its historic ambience. And yes there are roosters! Kekaha Beach is a wonderful place overlooking Niihau where you can spend time walking for hours. You have to drive there and of course you need a car. Major Shopping would be best to do when you arrive in Lihue at Safeway or Walmart before heading out to Kekaha. Anything you forgot you will get in Waimea. In the house you find all you need as described. Would we come back? YES, thanks to our hosts for opening their home on Kauai.

A special property in a special part of the world - thank you for the opportunity to stay here; it was the perfect place for our stay on the south shore.

We absolutely adored Nene’s Nest! The perfect cottage for our family during our fabulous trip to Kauai. Everything was clean, comfortable and easily accessible to what we wanted to do. We will definitely recommend Nene’s Nest to anyone and everyone that we know traveling to Kauai!! What a gem!! Thank you!

I've been trying to figure out how to describe my stay at the Nene Nest but it is almost beyond description. It is an oasis of quiet days and nights. You can hear the waves, you can listen to the crickets at night when you star gaze. The lack of environmental light pollution in Kekaha makes the night sky explode with stars and the Milky Way.
The roosters in the morning, at first, were a bit much but by the end of our stay, I enjoyed listening to them call to one another as the sun rose. But know, they are loud lol
The house itself instantly felt like home. It has everything you need (I coveted the fridge), and the Victrola Bluetooth speaker let us play our playlists quietly in the background while making breakfast, lunch or dinner.
It was the perfect launching spot to see the island from Polihale to Kapa'a and beyond. Kauai is beautiful island that takes the aloha spirit seriously and makes you feel like ohana by the time you leave. It was important for us to recognize the Native Hawaiian people, their spirit, and respect the land we walked on. The Nene Nest was a very good place to embrace the spirit of aloha and find the rhythm of the island itself.
Melissa was super responsive to the all our questions, suggestions, and concerns. She is an awesome host.
We are definitely planning a return trip to the Nest.

We had a lovely stay at Nene’s Nest Cottage. It was close to small boat Harbor for the boat excursion and to Waimea canyon. Also, there is a nice walkable white sand beach nearby. Stars at night were incredible. Melissa was very quick to respond to any questions. Everything in the cottage worked well including the air conditioning, washer and dryer.’

Our stay was truly magnificent! The cottage has been lovingly restored, beautifully appointed, and is in a great location. The sunsets at Kekaha are phenomenal, and all the things we wanted to do in Kauai were nearby, including Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali coast, and the Kauai Coffee Plantation. A special bonus was being on the non-touristy side, hearing the local language, and exploring the small towns. A huge thank you to our hosts!

Initially I panicked when I pulled-up and saw a car parked in the driveway, then I carefully read the instructions that the owner provided us and realized that there is a small driveway to the right of the adjacent property which leads to the Nest. The Nest is very secluded and tucked-away from the street and surrounded with foliage, so it offered a great deal of privacy.
The Nest was built in 1950 as a home for the manager of the local sugar plantation and was nicely appointed and decorated. It had all of the amenities that you could ask for, to include high speed Wi-Fi, 2 bedrooms, (1 King & 1 Queen), window AC units (if needed), nice covered porch & car port with a washer & dryer out back.
The Nest was also featured in Tiny Homes Magazine.
Great place, hope to stay there again next time we are visiting the island!

Beautiful incredibly private home. Love that the whole property is surrounded by hedges with a large lawn. Very convenient location while being away from the crowds. Quick access up to the state parks to beat the crowds hiking.

This is a great property and accurately described in the listing. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking. There are beach towels, chairs, boogie boards a cooler and umbrella for your beach days. The beds were very comfortable and the neighborhood felt safe. You can walk directly down to the beach from the home. There is also a larger beach a bit up the road. Salt Pond State Park is also close and has a nice swimming area with lifeguards on duty. Close in proximity to the cute little town of Waimea. Also not a far drive to Waimea Canyon or Port Allen. We appreciated the location of the home and the daily visits from the rooster next door. I would highly recommend this property and we would definitely stay again!

The Nene Nest was such a treat! We loved the homey feel, the Lani was our favorite spot, morning or evening. Discovering Waimea Canyon was such an unexpected adventure. We spent time relaxing and exploring the area. Knowing we could come back to the comfort of the house was just what we needed. Thank you!

My husband and I stayed for a week at the Nene Nest. We traveled around the island all week and enjoyed returning to an always sunny location. Proximity to an incredible beach, food, and many activities was also a perk! Melissa was incredibly thoughtful and checked in during our stay, and provided essentials such as sunscreen, beach gear, and many recommendations for things to do and places to eat. The Nene Nest had everything we needed and more for an incredible stay in Kauai. We can't wait to stay again in the future.

We stayed for a girls trip mid May for 8 days. Communication with Melissa was very fast and she answered every question I had and was on top of all the details, even checking in again on the day we arrived to make sure all was in order. The property is exactly as pictured and described, we had zero troubles the entire time. I can't thank them enough for thinking of all the small details like noise machines because of the chickens, what a relief to be able to sleep past 4am! The air conditioning units in the bedrooms were perfect, they cooled the house in the evening just fine. One suggestion for future travelers is backing straight down into the driveway and leave the vehicle there by the garbage cans vs. trying to get around the fence, we made sure the vehicle was behind the property fence line as there is a neighbor there but it made our in and out so much nicer once we figured that out. :)
Thank you Melissa and Kyle for opening your beautiful home, we will be back!
