About this cottage rental

In the heart of glorious West Sussex countryside, at the top of a hill, tucked away on our 13 acre farm lies a charming and rustic luxury self-catering retreat named The Byre. Whether you are in need of a restful weekend retreat or a short vacation this is a perfect place to stay in comfort and style. Relax on the farm, or pick up the country trail right outside your front door and venture out. The vineyards, beaches, country pubs, and the glorious South Downs National Park await you.

As you enter the oak clad Byre you are greeted by colour, comfort and an array of mod cons.

Relax in front of the TV on the wonderfully comfortable Ercol sofa and chair, connected up to Amazon, Netflix, Youtube, BBC and more. Or light up the wood burning stove, throw on some logs and let the flames enchant and warm you. Or spoil yourself and do both!

If you’re feeling a little peckish then step into the well equipped kitchen – microwave, induction hob, oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, toaster, kettle and full complement of crockery, glassware and cutlery. It’s all there. As you wash up looking out of the kitchen window don’t be surprised if Nellie and Maggie, our two shaggy Shetlands ponies, aren’t up at the gate some 20ft away beckoning you to come over and visit with a cheeky carrot or three.

Off the kitchen you will find a delightful cloakroom, one of the two toilets, with its feature vessel basin on a rustic table with legs hand-painted legs in teal (its actually Vardo – one of those fancy names paints from Farrell and Ball!).

Heading up the oak staircase you come upon the beautifully vaulted ceiling under which sits the bedroom with its eclectic mix of old and new. From stripped back oak floor boards with divine underfloor heating to a 50 year old Ercol arm chair donned in vibrant teal velvet to antique pine cupboards to a contemporary luxurious double bed, this is the perfect place to recuperate after a day in the great outdoors.

A quirky oak door leads to the enticing shower to invigorate yourself. Oak and pine cupboards give you all the space you need to store all your bathing and beautifying bits and bobs.

Head back down and out of your back door onto the courtyard where you can breakfast, lunch or dine in the company of Nellie and Maggie or fire up a BBQ for some flamed grilled delights.

Every bit of floor, upstairs and downstairs has underfloor heating – even the understair cupboard just in case you want to stay warm whilst hiding there playing Hide and Seek!

For the eco warriors amongst you will love the solar panels, eco flush toilets and double glazing throughout, high spec insulation and air tested to the most demanding regs and external power points to enable you to charge up your electric car.

Across the courtyard within one of our barns you will find a laundry room with washing machine and dryers. There is also a recreational space including a Bonzini football table that came out of a Parisian café some 15 years ago. Enjoy! Some spare wellies and coats are available here in case you forgot to bring some.

It goes without saying all heating and hot water is provided together with linen and super soft towels.

Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are supplied as is free WiFi.

Mingle with your fellow travelers – there is an equally luxurious cottage next to yours - or do your own thing and venture out and explore glorious West Sussex.

You have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through our farm and out into the beautiful countryside beyond. As you venture out of the farm you will notice our ponies. We run a private stud where we breed native ponies. If you are lucky you may even see a foal!

As well as our ponies we have 5 dogs and 4 farm cats so a lot going on around the Byre.

The Byre
The Byre
We stayed at the Byre for 4 nights and it was just perfect! Sarah and Deepak are so welcoming and happy to help whenever they can. You couldn't ask for better hosts! The Byre itself is beautifully done, the interior is gorgeous as well as the exterior. We loved having breakfast outside in the patio area and giving Nellie and Maggie, the two Shetland ponies, some apples as well! It is also a great place to go for walks and they provided such detailed descriptions of where to go. We are already thinking of booking another weekend during the winter and getting proper use out of the log burner!

Perfect retreat for 2!
Perfect retreat for 2!
We had a super time at The Byre. Beautifully decorated and very comfortable, we really didn’t want to leave. Deepak, Sarah & family are lovely, friendly hosts who were happy to recommend places to go/eat. All the appliances were top quality and the kitchen had everything we needed. Comfy bed, super shower and even a downstairs cloakroom! All we could hear were birds, horses and the occasional moo. We had the most amazing weather for the whole week meaning we could sit outside and eat everyday. We loved the 2 Shetland ponies who would come over looking for their carrots everyday. It’s also in a great place to visit Arundel, Petworth, the Weald and Downland outdoor museum (where The Repair Shop is filmed) We are already planning a return visit maybe next year!

In an uncertain time with the virus, we felt very safe being here. Everything was spotless and the book in system worked well. Sarah and Deepak were the perfect hosts. Friendly and happy to advise the best beaches, places to go and also park! The cottage and surroundings are just divine and we almost don’t want to tell you all how lovely this place is else the place will be booked out for months!! :)
